The Path to Health and the Nature of the Guru

Health depends on your kitchen and your way of life.

To achieve inner peace, learn from nature by going to a quiet retreat. Modern holiday spots are often restless with noise and sports; seek a peaceful forest retreat instead. Physical health requires proper nourishment. A traditional Indian kitchen, using many spices like turmeric cooked into food, supports strong bones and prevents diseases. Avoid processed foods, old bread, and excessive cheese. Eat a light, fresh breakfast and consume yogurt wisely, diluted and not in the evening. Do not overeat. A healthy body supports meditation and a harmonious family. Liberation does not come from physical exercises alone but from behavior, diet, spiritual thoughts, and grace.

Meditate on the form of the Gurudev, which is the embodiment of wisdom and cosmic consciousness, without duality, like the sky. Follow the instructions of the Master without hesitation or argument. The words of the scriptures are the final guide. Liberation comes through this grace and self-realization, not through torturing the body.

"Your health depends on your kitchen."

"Meditate on this form of Gurudev, which is only the embodiment of the wisdom."

As you know, we are here to be one with nature. It is described that to achieve inner peace, you have to learn from the outer world, meaning nature. Nature itself maintains its peace, harmony, and natural way of life. Doesn’t matter if it’s birds or other creatures, trees, and different kinds of vegetation. Also advised by great ṛṣis, time to time go to have an ekāntavās to some ashram, some monastery, or in the forest, or what you call your weekend house, to regenerate energy for knowing your inner strength. And if it is not possible, then at least twice a year you should go somewhere in ekāntavās. According to that principle, in modern life, in modern civilization, it is suggested to go for holidays. Unfortunately, nowadays, holiday places are very restless. If you go to some lake or beach, there is a lot of water sport. Of course, some people love that. It’s fun for them, but having fun for one person, while all others who are on the beach came for a weekend or a holiday for a few days or a few weeks, is a disturbing factor. It should be organized, some beaches or some lakes, which are only for water sports. Then, people who love this can go there. Also, many restaurants, many clubs, especially on the beaches, are so loud until 3 o’clock in the morning. And morning begins already at 8 o’clock or 7 o’clock. So, that’s not any more peaceful. Wise would be that you search for some retreat place which is in the forest. There is no water sport. And such a retreat where there are no clubs nearby, you have a good restaurant, of course you have good nourishment. That would solve the purpose of your holidays, for what you are going. Here in Australia, where this blessing is coming to you, dear brothers and sisters, the spot where we are sitting is known as a pollution-free spot. There is no pollution, chemical pollution or from the many cars or different kinds of pollution. I am very happy that Australians, especially, are very aware about health. So health consciousness in Australia is growing more and more. So-called yoga also is supported and recognized by the authorities of Australia, and also natural medicine like Āyurveda. Sooner or later, humans have to come back to this problem to solve it. We are speaking about health. This morning, I had a little talk with two Indians who have lived here for the last 30-40 years. And one is working as a volunteer for the old people, for the young people, for the ill people, to transport them from home to hospital and back, and so on. The one problem is that the western people, their bones break like biscuits. You will see in India, the bones don’t break so easily. Their bones are very strong and even a little flexible. The bone, to a certain degree, will bend but will not break. And that is one of the reasons which I want to tell you. First is a vegetarian diet. Let’s say you don’t talk about ahiṃsā, no killing and so on. But at least we can talk about our self. It’s our body, it’s our life, and we would like to be healthy. As long as your bones are not broken, you don’t know what a bone is. And when the bones are broken, then you know what it means to have a bone. And, specifically, the protection for the bones is there is a special herb or spice called haldi, turmeric powder, yellow turmeric powder. All healthy Indians consume, per head, at least one teaspoon of haldi per day. The Indian kitchen is like an Āyurvedic medical store or an Āyurvedic store. Every Indian cook, or mostly Indian ladies, they are the most knowledgeable persons in this part of health. What to give the children and what not to give the children, what to give to the husband and what not to give the husband, and wife and daughters and so on. And which kind of spices, vegetables, which kind of spices you should put. And in an Indian kitchen, all different kinds of spices, at least twenty-five different ones, are there all the time. So the ladies know what is good for the haldi, what is good for the chilli, and hummus. And jeerā, cumin seeds, or rai, mustard seeds, or cardamom, and so on. There are many, many. So, I would suggest you, it is never too late, begin to consume the haldi with your nourishment. Haldi should be cooked. It should be put in the vegetables that it is cooking with. It should be slightly fried. And so you will see, mostly the Indian ladies, what they do, they put first, like a cooking course. I am talking in this Kriya Yoganuṣṭhān, what do you say? But this is for our health, because we are here to achieve physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. They will put one teaspoon or tablespoon, it depends on the quantity of cooking, for how many people, oil in the pot, the cooking pot. When that oil becomes hot, let’s say about 80 degrees centigrade, not Fahrenheit, then they put in the mustard seeds first. Then they will put in garlic or onions, a little, slightly fried. When garlic or onion gets a color, a gold color. It should not become brown. Then they will have prepared already, mixed in one cup or in one katorī, in one bowl, half cup water, one tablespoon or half teaspoon haldi and powder of the dhāniyā or the coriander and some hiṅg and something like this, all the spices which are there. And then they will put immediately the jeerā, cumin seeds, in this oil, and then this liquid water inside. It will cook, takes 3-4 minutes until all this water, which is in the spices mixed, goes out. Now, what you see is that the spice is swimming on the top, and the oil is coming out. That is the correct way of preparing the spices. Then they put the vegetables inside, and then you put a little water inside. So this is generally done. Now, the doctors advise not to have fat, not to have chilies, not to have this. The result? The whole world is ill, yeah. Day by day, new diseases are increasing. We were talking about the problem with the prostate, especially in men. After a certain age, above 50, 60, 70, it becomes bigger and can even develop into cancer. If you consume the haldi every day, if you consume this slightly fried garlic every day, if you consume what you call the onion salad every day, a little, not very much, but a little, but every day, you will not have this problem with the prostate. It’s good also for the ladies, cancer prevention. Indian kitchen. Now you will see many Indians have the cancers. What would I say now to this question, answer, self-question, and self-answer? Because those Indians who have cancer, you go and study how their kitchen is. Their kitchen is converted in the way of a European kitchen. Excuse me, the Western kitchen is a very good kitchen; I have nothing against it, but now the Western kitchen has become a kitchen of the supermarket and microwaves. Every morning you eat toast, which is not good. The bread, which is old bread, which we call tāmasika guṇa, bread is never good. Freshly made bread, or freshly made chapātī, or cereals and fruits, salads and juice. This is one of the best things you can consume for breakfast. Getting up and having coffee on an empty stomach. Your stomach holds like this. Your head is like, "Oh man, what have I done to you?" I am always here for you, helping you and doing this. Why do you put this black hot water inside? Yes. Give me something which has nutrition inside. Juice, some fruit, or fresh-made bread, or fresh chapātīs, sāttvika. So, all I want to tell you today is that your health depends on your kitchen. So you can tell it’s not your kitchen, it is your healthy restaurant, or your healthy—not a restaurant—a health food store. So, everyone, try and in one year tell me how you feel, different. Minimum one teaspoon of haldi should be consumed every day. And try to avoid, as much as you can, eating outside in restaurants. The restaurant people will be very angry with me. I must have a double bodyguard, yes. But there are many restaurants which cook healthy food. So we should support them to go there and see the healthy organic food which is growing. When physically we feel good, then it’s easy for us to meditate or do some nice, good work. A healthy body keeps a healthy family situation. And when someone is ill, then the whole family is sad because you are ill. And try to consume as little as you can, nearly nothing, the alcohol. Don’t say it’s a Western culture. It is not a Western culture. It is an economy involved in this. But what kind of economy? That economy is good when it makes us ill, causes accidents, and creates conflict in families, and so on. So, ṛṣis, the yogīs, they suggest us to go to some retreat for holidays at a very beautiful place. For example, our ashram in Jadan, in Kailash, in Khattu, in Nepal, in Bola Guda, is known as a pollution-free spot. The garden is very beautiful, and you know, especially because we have hundreds of neem trees, and the air from these neem trees is very healthy. It’s a prevention against cancer, and also the air of the āmla trees, the needle trees, and many forests. Nature has given us so much. If we don’t utilize this, it’s our own mistake. What we are eating is also coming from nature, but that nature is manipulated. Consume the milk, but unfortunately nowadays in the dairy, they consume a lot of chemicals. They give the injection to cows so that they give more milk. And in the feeders also, and that kind of milk is not so good for our health. We need milk in order to keep the balance of calcium in the body, yogurt or milk. Cheese is considered a tāmasika food. So do not consume too much cheese, but you can make your own paneer and you can consume that if you would like. Or very good is the soya and tofu, but those soyas which are organic. Then you will see that meditation will help you very much. So welcome, especially because the thought came about health, how to gain health. Another thing, the yogī says that a yogī is always hungry. Eat that much that after one hour you can eat more, double. Don’t eat too much. It means your digestive fire is strong and active all the time. Do not consume yogurt in the evening, and do not consume yogurt directly from the freezer. The effect of the yogurt does not matter in which form you consume it, whether in soup, hot, warmed, or cold. The effect of the yogurt is to dim the jāṭharāgni, and in a night, it is said that our intense, thine digestive system is a little resting. But we have eaten something, that if we ate something and we take the yogurt evening, then you kill that. Then slowly, slowly you will develop the concentrations. You will develop gastric troubles. Yogurt is very good, but don’t take it immediately after eating. But in Āyurveda, they say don’t take solid or thick yogurt. One tablespoon of yogurt, mix it in half a liter of water. Nicely make it like juice or water, white water, and that is very, very healthy for us. In summer, yogurt is advised to be eaten more. In winter and cold season, to do it a little. So, there is a, our mothers know, our kitchen lady knows, when to give you yogurt and when not to give. Evening, husband asks, "Can I have a cup of yogurt?" She says, "No." When she says no, the husband doesn’t dare to say, "Yes, I want," you know. And if the husband still insists to have yogurt, then she will say, "Well, I’ve forgotten to buy it," or, "Today the cow didn’t give so much milk. The milk was drunk." So our sisters, our mothers, and the wives, they take care of the whole family’s health. Kriyānusthān, what we are doing here, and āsanas and prāṇāyāms, according to the yoga in daily life, they are very gentle movements, but they have a very big effect. In some spas and by doctors, research work has been done, and it is declared that yoga is a scientific system for a dead life. People who hear something about yoga think, "Now I will go today and have a head standing." And when you come to the yoga and dead life, and you say, "Should I stand on the head?" They will say, "No, stand on the legs." So, in yoga there is no competition, and in yoga there are no challenges, and in yoga it’s not that you torture your body if you can’t perform some posture, okay? Your liberation, your mokṣa, doesn’t depend on your exercises, physical or the breath exercises. Our liberation depends on our behavior, our way of eating, our way of life, our spiritual thoughts, and Guru Kṛpā. It is said, "Dhyāna Mūlam Guru Mūrti." On what should we meditate? Meditate on the form of the Gurudev. Now, what means the Gurudev? What is that form? So it is said, it describes the form of the Gurudev: Brahmanandam Paramashukadam, that is the divine bliss of the Brahman, the giver of happiness. Brahmanandam Paramashukadam Kevalam Jnanamurti. So that form, what we call guru, is only the embodiment of the wisdom. Not this physical body, but that divine, spiritual body. Kevalaṁ jñānaṁ ūrtiṁ dvandātītaṁ gagana sadṛśam. And that is above liking, disliking, above all the forms and dualities. The consciousness of the Gurudev is like a sky, the sky which has no dualities. And the sky gives space to everyone. Everyone has a space in this cosmic mother’s body. The sky, the universe, whatever you call it, is the divine mother. Mother is first, and then there is consciousness. That consciousness is known as a golden egg, that embryo in the mother, the cosmic mother’s body, a golden egg. And that golden egg is cosmic consciousness. And in that golden egg, from there, from this consciousness, the divine creation awakens. So we have, in three days, in Christianity, they will celebrate. Or remember, whatever they do is called the Eastern. And in the East, especially the form of the egg. So it is not that you eat that egg. Now people who don’t eat eggs, they give you the chocolate egg. In different ways you have to eat, but it is not for eating. That is the cosmic body of God, and we are all within this. That is our origin. So the sky has space for all. The sky has no restriction for you. You can go anywhere, wherever you like to go, if you can. But Mother has her body, her lap, so big that all have a place there. So, Gurudev is that one which has the consciousness without duality, without differences, equal like a sky. Gagana Sadṛśam. How does your Gurudev look like? Like a sky. How is it formed? All is the wisdom. Without dualities, without any conflicts. Dvandha Atītaṁ Gagana Sadṛśaṁ Tasmāsyādi Lakṣaṁ. And that is the aim of everyone, to merge into that cosmic Self. That’s only one. There’s no two. Only one sky. Only one truth. Only one God. Only one consciousness. Only one. Ekam, only one. Nityam, everlasting. Never dies, never born. The sky never dies and is never born. This space is ever here. All our ancestors came and went. The sky is still here. So nityam means everlasting. Vimal means spotless, pure, crystal clear, transparent, no sin, no negative, no impurities, only pure and pure. Vimala achalam, not movable, not changeable. Does the sky move? I didn’t see the sky moving, but we are moving inside. Everything, all elements are moving within the sky, but the sky is sthira, steady. There is no motion. So ekam nityam vimalam achalam sarvadhi sākṣibhūtam uttamam. And now, of everything. Even we, on our limited body, we don’t know what’s happening inside at all. Only we know that we are hungry. Only we know that we have something down in the stomach. And only we know that we are in a hurry to go to the WC. Or we know that our heart is beating, or somewhere now, somewhere it’s pain or not. But how our body is managing, how many functions are going on, is unbelievable. Unbelievable. What a wonderful body! Till now, there is no architect born on this planet who can make such a body and put a soul inside, a life inside. This body is a holy body. You have a holy body; your body is a holy body. Every creature is holy. Look at a little ant, how many legs he has, how nicely he is coordinating all his legs and moving. The feelings, if you try to come near, touching runs away because you are afraid. Such a little, small creature. How did that architect, the cosmic architect or Mother Nature, which instrument did she or he utilize to make these nerves or everything for a small creature that is walking, running? Birds in certain places, there are so many birds on the beach or in Africa. These thousands of birds take off from this side flying, and hundreds are flying from the other side, and they all, this bunch of... Birds, nearly like a cloud, and flying. Did you ever see an accident? Really, I’m always so wondering. So many birds, if you make some noise like this, all birds fly, but not even they crash together in their wings. What a perfect communication, what a perfect navigation, and if it happens, the humans have to run. If there is a fire from one hole, how many will fall down? How can we say that humans are the best and clever and everything, but still we don’t know what’s happening in our body? And who are we to say this is a nasty creature, this nasty beast? No. God creates everything which has its sense. So, what’s happening within our body, even we don’t know. But the cosmic mother knows what’s happening in her body. That cosmic consciousness knows everything. So, sarvaddhi-sākṣibhūtam. He is the knower of everyone. He is the witness of everyone’s life. Sarvaddhi-sākṣibhūtam. Bhava-atītam. He is above emotion, anger, jealousy, hate. No. Bhāvātītam or triguṇarahitam. And so, Satguru Devī is above all three guṇas: sattva, rajas, and tamas guṇas. Tasme śrī guru ve namaha. To such a Gurudev, I bow down, that he may bless us. Therefore, after searching, after research work, tapasyās, finally, how to meditate and what to meditate, then it is dhyāna mūlaṁ gurumūrti. Meditate on this form of Gurudev, which I just now explained to you briefly. Dhyāna mūlaṁ guru-mūrti, pūjā mūlaṁ guru-pādam. We adore the holy feet of that Gurudev who walks on this planet. That gives us a shelter, came for us, and that we are there. Mantra mūlam guru-vākyam. Guru-vakya means the words of the Master are the final for us. What is Guru Vakya for us now? All holy scriptures: Vedas, Upaniṣads, Bhagavad Gītā, Rāmāyaṇa, Quran, Bible, and all other holy scriptures, what they call the Torah. These are the words of the divine, and these words are a final judgment for us, and that speaks in our Gurudev, that truth, that reality. So, the best mantra is to follow the words, the instruction of your Master. Don’t hesitate, do it. Blessed are you that you get instruction, that you get something that you should do. We are blessed ones. Though it is sometimes we don’t understand, it is hard. Jesus said to the Holy Father, "Why, Father, me?" He was suffering. And he said, "Just why me?" Because God said, "Because I trust you." I love you, and so all that divine is within us. But we mortal beings are involved in many, many conflicts of this world, and we don’t understand. So, a successful life, successful spirituality, is to work, do, and follow Gurudev’s words. It is said there are three different kinds of disciples. Uttam. Uttam is that one comes to know what Gurudev wants, or what is the wish, and just runs and does it. Madhyam will wait till Gurudev tells directly, "Do this." Okay. And Kanishad, the third one, the third class, if the master tells you to do something, then you say, "Is there nobody else who can do it?" I’m just sitting with you, listening to you, Gurudev. You can try to avoid. That will not get any. There was a master and disciple living together in such an ekānta place. And they had one hut made nicely out of grass. Master was very kind, very nice to his disciple. The disciple was also very kind, very nice to him. But the disciple was a lazy number one. Lazy number one, didn’t want to do anything. Always, he tried to push it on his master. Master, can’t you do this? Master, can you do this? Master said, "Okay, I will do." One day, the master was sitting in the hut, and he was also there, and the door was closed. And the master asked the disciple, "Go out and check if it’s raining, otherwise we go for a walk." Disciple said, "Oh, it’s time for rest," and Master tends to go for a walk. So he doesn’t dare to say anything directly to the Master. He said, "Yes, Master, you know, just a cat came inside and is sitting under your bed." That’s the cat. Cat to the cat’s back. If the cat is wet, it means it is raining. And if it’s not wet, it’s not raining. Indirectly, he tells the Master to do it. The Master said, "Oh, he’s now become lazy." So Master said, "Okay, then we will not go for a walk. Let’s go to sleep." So there were oil lamps. At that time, there was no electricity. Blow off the flame, and let’s go to sleep. He was in his bed already, the disciple, nice and warm. He said he didn’t want to get up. Master, you know, you close your eyes, and for you, light is off. So it means he didn’t want to get up and blow out the light. Master said, "Okay." Then the master thought, "I must tell him something that he has to do." It can’t function like this. He is always lazy. Try to avoid. Master said, "Okay, then close the door nicely, as we are going to sleep." And the disciple said, "Yes, Master. But you know, sir, two things I did." One, you can do also. Close the door. Master said, "Okay, you are right." Master went to close the door, and he said, "But if you want to know if it is raining or not, go and step outside. You will see if it is raining or not." Master said, "No, we will not go for a walk." He closed the door and was coming to his bed. The master and disciple said, "You want to put off the light, so please do it. It is very close to you. Can you do this for the master?" All three things he let the master do. Such a lazy person will not get that liberation, that Guru Kṛpā, that Vākya. So, without argument, without creating conflict in your mind, act. So that’s called Mantra Mūlam Guru Vākyam. If the master tells you, "Don’t go this side, go that side," definitely he has something, some reason. Your mother tells the child, "Don’t put your finger on the fire." Fire says, "No, I will do." Mother says, "No, don’t do it." Then, mother does something and suddenly presses the finger. Oh, mommy, I hurt my head. You know, she told me, "I told you, don’t put your hands in the fire." So it is that we will realize what is meant by my mother or father or master: what to do and what not to do. Finally, mokṣa-mūlaṁ guru-kṛpā, the liberation which we are searching for will not come from torturing the body, holding the breath, eating the breath in and left in and right out and right in and left out and left in and no out. That’s okay, it’s good for our health system, but finally we are searching for that divine consciousness, and for that we are born here. The purpose of our being here is not to create the house, and children, and monies, and car, and this and that. We call this parpañca. The aim of human life is to get ātma-jñāna, self-realization, brahma-jñāna. And this Kriyānushṭhān, which you are doing, is a preparation for your consciousness to purify, to do further and higher Kriyās. One day it will come that you can really feel and realize that you have that Brahmajñāna and those feelings. It will come. So very happy to see you this morning. Wish you very good practice. And see you then. Evening 6 o’clock will be lecture. Daylight, if you eat 5, is good. Do you agree? This, please. Okay. So if you agree, then I am happy that on daylight you have your dinner, and then after we will have long satsaṅg and long lectures, and I will explain evening. About some kriyās: what does this mean? Why do you do this and that? Okay? Thank you. So it will take time till you come to your hut or to your practicing place. Wish you all the best and a very nice day. Take care. We love the animals, but from a distance. Okay? Yes. They love us also, but from a distance. But if you try to go very close and do something, then they will embrace you in their way, and then we say, "Oh, this is okay. God bless you, dear brothers and sisters. See you again."
