Yoga and Āyurveda: The Path to Health and Self-Realization

A spiritual lecture on the interconnectedness of yoga and Āyurveda for holistic health and self-realization.

"Yoga is the most ancient science of body, mind, and soul. And Yoga in Daily Life is designed for physical, mental, social, and spiritual health."

"Āyurveda, this is a very clear word, the knowledge of life. Ayu means life."

Swami Paramhans addresses an audience, weaving together cosmology, philosophy, and practical guidance. He explains the nature of consciousness (Ātmā) and creation, positions yoga as a unifying practice for body and spirit, and details Āyurveda as the science of life and herbal knowledge. He shares illustrative stories, including one about the sage Charak, and is joined by a 95-year-old practitioner who testifies to yoga's benefits. The talk covers themes of authentic lineage, ethical living, and the goal of self-realization.

Salutations to the cosmic light. Dear sisters and brothers, good evening. Nice to see you. I welcome you to this evening. The subject is Yoga and Āyurveda. Your country is well known to India. You know the many philosophies, yogas, and spirituality that come from India. And your country is also a very historical country. I heard that Prague is known as a mystic city. And the Czech Republic is called the country of milk and honey. But now it is polluted. Too much pesticide, so we are looking for health. Yoga is the most ancient science of body, mind, and soul. And Yoga in Daily Life is designed for physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. So I'm happy to be here, respected director of this hotel, and respected Professor Karuṇā, and all other dignitaries who are here. Life is a life. Do we understand what life is? The yoga philosophy, the yogic thoughts, come from the very beginning. That's why we call it yugas. The billions, the trillions of yugas: Satya Yuga, Tretā Yuga, Dvāpara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. Now we are in Kali Yuga. The Kali Yuga is a lot of suffering. A lot of sin, fighting, restlessness, unhappiness. So, Kali Yuga is the last Yuga. Then again, we'll begin a new Yuga. And so it is changing. The Vedas are the first written scriptures. The Vedas are given in Satyugas by the god Brahmā, who is part of the trinity: Śiva, Viṣṇu, and Brahmā. The beginning is one, and that's called Śiva. Shiva means the consciousness, Shiva means the universe, Shiva means the creator, Shiva means our ātmā. We have a physical body, we have a mind, we have emotions, we have intellect, we have awareness, and we have consciousness. There are many layers of our life where this ātmā is living within ourselves. In between comes the soul, jīvātmā. Jīvātmā means the mixture of jīva and ātmā. Well, we come to this point again. So the Vedas said, the yogīs said, the Siddhas said, it's called śūnyakāśa, unendless. We don't know where is beginning and where is end. Śūnyakāśa means a void space, nothing and nothing and nothing, only dark blue light, even no stars and sun. That is trillions of the yugas. There, it is said in the Upaniṣads, and it's a great practice of yoga, who have got self-realization. Who am I? "Ko'ham? Katham idaṁ jātaṁ? Ko vā kartasya vidyate?" Ādi Guru Bhagavān Śaṅkarācārya said, "Ko'ham? Katham idaṁ jātaṁ? Ko vā kartasya vidyate?" Who am I? Who are you? Not a human. Not an animal. Not a body. Not a mind. Not thoughts. Not emotions. Not desires, but I am. Not even the soul. I am that Nirākār Ātmā. Ātmā means thyself. It has no form, it has no karma, it has no suffering, it is pure light and oneness in the entire universe. That you are. What I am telling you, it is you are. But it is covered with so many layers of the physical, mental, emotional, etc. Again, I'm jumping to the beginning point. So it is said that God has some wish. Does God have a wish? My God. Then is the last of the last when God has a desire. Then what about us? We have many wishes. Well, it is the consciousness, space, and energy—three. So the space is called the cosmic mother. Space is the form of the mother, the mother's body. Within her, the consciousness is existing. It's not a space in the consciousness, but the consciousness in the space. So one thing becomes clear now: we are all in this hall, not the hall is within us. Where are you? I am in the conference hall. That's it. Then comes the energy. That's called mother again, Śakti. Energy which unites space and consciousness. Like cement and two bricks. That energy is uniting, harmonizing, and balancing. So uniting is yoga. So it is that cosmic energy that unites our ātmā to paramātmā, the supreme. It doesn't matter if it's human or animal. Each and every entity is a creation of the Supreme. It's called when the creation begins. The creator has created 8.4 million different creations. Divides them into three categories. Jalchar, Thalchar, Nabchar. The creatures in the water, the creatures on the earth, and the creatures in the space. So we are somewhere in this. Let's go further, so that Brahman, the Supreme, doesn't have desire, but we can say it has, but not that desire that we have: desire to eat ice cream, desire to drink the juice, to eat good food, etc. But it is "Eko'haṁ bahusyāmi": I am one, and now I will multiply. How will he do? Who is that? No form, nothing. But there is that tendency. So the first beginning is the sound. The Vedas say, "Na," not the root of Parabrahma. The form of the Supreme is the resonance. If you want to know God or understand God, the resonance, through that resonance awakens the light that is called jyoti. Means the light of life, the flame of life within us. That is Ātmā. That is Ātmā, and out of that flame manifests Svayambhū. Svayambhū means he who manifested himself. Only that one who has no mother, no father, it is he who manifested it from himself. And that's called Svāyambhū Śiva. And that is the first beginning. Trillions, millions of years, many yugas are changing, the coming of many suns, stars becoming visible, different planets, and there creation begins. Where, who, how? Still, nothing has happened. There are the plans. And so, out of that sound, through the light, the vibration began like lightning in the clouds. And so, out of that supreme light, many, many are manipulated. It multiplies. And we are that light. Many times we go back, and we come back. Then it creates that beautiful earth for our earth. Because how will we come back to our origin? We have to go through physical form, so finally it's called ātmā jñāna, self-realization: Ko'ham? Who am I? Ko'ham, katham: from where I'm coming, where I am going, and what's my aim to come here? That is the answer through meditation and through the yoga. The humans are created as the representative of God. God gave all the powers. But then God realized, "This human, my son, I gave authorities, but he began against me." So all the energies, abilities, and miracles, God has made dormant. Combination lock, because if you have power, we will destroy all. We know the humans how to be so rare. One who is practicing that kind of meditation and sādhanā yoga may achieve and enter into the kingdom of the Lord. Well, we come further. There is a lot written. So it is said, health is not everything. But everything is nothing without health. Oh man, if you want to realize achievement, then first, health. So first, wealth is good health. How to keep good health. And there are two things. Nourishment and movement. We survive through nourishment, solid and liquid. But what kind of food do we eat? Will it keep our body healthy or not? If we are eating healthy or not, that is a question. Movements, which kind of movement? So, yogic postures, yogic exercises, that is balancing our body, mind, and emotions. Otherwise, there are so many movements, but if you practice the real yoga, authentic yoga, first-hand yoga, given by the masters, the generation, that you have your lineage of the master. So it is not who you are giving that spirituality and light. But it is the great realized masters. You have seen the beautiful picture of Bhagavān, Śrī Dīp, Nārāyaṇ, Mahāprabhujī. For me, he is that which one can imagine: what God can do, Mahāprabhujī could have done. Only by looking at his picture for one or two minutes, then you will know what you realize. And his master is like Śiva himself. So this is the lineage of our spirituality and yoga in daily life. It is authentic authority, so don't torture your body. You need not put your legs behind the head. You need not stand on your hands. You can do it. For your contentment, for your muscles, etc. But yoga posture is different, which is uniting body, mind, energy, consciousness, our soul, and ātmā. From where I came, why I came, where will I go, and what is my duty? This is the aim of yoga. Now, because the subject is Āyurveda and yoga, Āyurveda, this is a very clear word, the knowledge of life. Ayu means life. You say that I am 95 years old. It means your Āyu is 95 years, so that is the length of life. If you believe or you don't believe, belief does not change anything. The reality, evidence, never dies. So life is life. There are yogīs, and in our holy books and in the Upaniṣads, it is written the ṛṣis were living thousands of years. For what? To realize self-realization, dear, it is not easy. That you practice two weeks of yoga and then you get, "I am self-realized," and when you feel, "I practice 10 years, I am a master, I am self-realized, I have no fear," and then suddenly, a snake... When it comes and claws at your thigh, will you remain peaceful? You will run away. Why is the ātmā running away? So it is not easy, my dear, to get self-realization, to come to that point where you began. So Āyurveda, Veda means knowledge, and the first mantra in Āyurveda is: "Prvotní štěstí je dobré zdraví." And then good nourishment, good food. Now there are many, many herbs. In your country, here in the Czech Republic, also in Slovakia, Poland and everywhere in Europe. You have very valuable herbs. But we don't know. That's it. We just walk on it. We just destroy it. And those herbs are there. They can save our life. But we don't know. There was one yogī. His name was Gauraknāth. Many thousands of years, he had a cancer on the back, and they tried many things, but it was not healing. After 25 years, he was thinking, "What kind of bad karma do I have? What have I done? Why can't this cancer go away?" And beside him, where he had his fireplace, and he's sitting always there, one plant is growing for many years. And that's a herb, and that herb said to Gauraknāth, Gurujī, why don't you use me? In ten days, your cancer will go away. He smiled. Where have you been before? Twenty-five years you were silent. Now this disease is going away, and you say that you will cure it. But good. So he took this little branch of this and put it on his back. He made a paste and applied it there; in ten days, the cancer was completely finished. Now, in Kali Yuga, cancer is one of the most terrible diseases. Many great, strong people suddenly lose the joy of their life. But there are herbs. One thing I must tell you: I'm not an Āyurvedic doctor, please. You have to search for an Āyurvedic doctor. We have many in India. To become an Āyurvedic doctor, you have to study twelve years. First, you have to learn Sanskrit. Like in allopathic medicine, you have to learn Latin. So you have to learn the Sanskrit language. Then you have to study. So there is one story, which is a real one. One student came to one master of Āyurveda. The student came to the Āyurveda master and said, "Master, I want to learn Āyurveda. Can you accept me as your student?" The master said, "OK, I give you one duty." Go and bring me some plant, anything from vegetation. The trees, the bushes, the herbs, the roots, the leaves, which have no value, which are not valuable at all. So he traveled everywhere. The cactus, the carnivores, the plants in the water, in the desert. And he asked the local people, "What is this plant good for?" So someone said, "For this disease, for this disease, for this disease." There's one plant that is very poisonous; it can kill you. But for that certain disease, you have to apply it on your skin, and your skin cancer will disappear. So he was writing, drawing, and having the name of that plant, and after six years, he came to the master and said, Master, I failed. I was not successful. He said, "Why?" He said, "I traveled in all the four continents, but I couldn't find any herb, any vegetation, which is not useful. And Master, if you don't trust me, here is my work." The name of the plant, the picture he drew. Master said, "You finished your Āyurveda course." You became your Āyurvedic doctor. And that, called his name, was Charak Ṛṣi. So this Charak Vedas is the main book for the Āyurveda. So if you go to India, buy a few books and bring two bags full of the medicines, Āyurveda, and you said you are an Āyurvedic practitioner. It's dangerous. If any doctor, a wrong doctor, tells that, "I am a doctor," and you practice medicine now, you will land in jail. So strict rules are there, similarly for Āyurveda also, twelve years, my dear. So now Āyurveda is very famous in Europe and everywhere, but we don't have that kind of doctor, but there are coming professors in universities of Āyurveda. If you have interest to learn that, we can provide you, through the embassy of India authority, an authentic Āyurveda doctor. So, Āyurveda is a kind of diet, and what we eat is what we are eating for living. Not living for eating, and now we are living for eating. We are not eating for living, and that's why we are eating without thinking anything. We became the slaves of our taste. Mouth. When we swallow, after the vocal cord, we don't know what taste it is. And we don't know how it will affect our certain glands, organs, circulations, brain, many, many things. So, therefore, first we should know what I eat and how it will affect me. This means now you wake up. You were sleeping before. Now you love your body, and you respect your body. And then practicing, awakening the dormant energies which are in our body. Our nerve systems, glands, organs, joints, etc. Really, yoga can give you, again, the best health and long life. And so Yoga in Daily Life is here since 1973. In this city I was many times. That time I had a black beard, not so white; only that is the difference. So millions of Czechoslovakians have been practicing yoga in their life, and they are practicing and teaching further. But one thing we should know, someone said, the tons of theory are nothing compared with the gram of practice. So, about one hour ago, I met one gentleman, a very young one, very young, 96 years, and he told me something, a story. Professor Karuna told me, she brought him to me, and he told me, he is evidence of what I am talking about. So maybe he will tell us something, because secondhand is not good. The first hand is good. So, if you allow me to take your time, maybe invite this gentleman, and he tells us a few minutes. Please, give him the device. Translation, please. I am very happy. I hope I can be heard. I am very happy that I could talk to Swāmījī, because for me it is a great event in my life. Because I was always very interested, because in our family there has always been an interest that the world should be a better place. And after the terrible war and all this difficult time which my generation had in this world, meeting Swāmījī was like the opening of a new journey. I was over 60 years old; now I am almost 95 years old, and I still feel very happy about the life around me. Though there are many things which are not suitable, not human, they are not human, the things which are happening. But I believe that the people who have a new perspective in their life, thanks to Swāmījī, those will be the people who will keep the world, who will save the world. Because the world is beautiful, we belong to the sunlight of the world, no matter winter or summer, and I would wish that this beauty of the world would go on. And I would like to wish Swamijī long life, so that he can bring love all over the globe. And he overcame some disease that he should have. No, I have some hereditary illness. My blood pressure is insufficient. And yoga has helped me very much. I practice every day. My whole morning is about yoga and what yoga has brought to me. Concerning my lifestyle. Also, the physical exercises so that my body is flexible. But also being able to face life's problems. I am of the older generation, but I am also a member of a nation which has brought something to the world. And I would like to continue this. Because our civilization is very interesting, very historical, and also the lesson of history, the message from history. To all of you, I would like to wish you good health and the ability to face life and to struggle for a better life. And to Swamiji, I would like to say, I'm looking forward to meeting you again. Thank you. So this is a work of 35 years. So, comparing his life when he was sixty years, sixty-six years, and now, but as he said, he's practicing every day, abhyāsa, abhyāsa, kaunteya, abhyāsa. God Kṛṣṇa said to Arjuna, because he was learning archery. He said, "Practice, practice, practice makes perfect." So it's not only that you teach others, you have to teach also yourself. So be aware of your nourishment. You know, nowadays in the world, people consume lots of meat. And it is said, per day, how many billions of animals are killed. Including the fish. Now, many animals are kept in small rooms, and we don't know what disease that animal has. They have mental disease too, infections too, and they slaughter them. It remains in the meat, and it goes to the body of the one who is eating. Before an animal is killed, the animal knows. In 1977, one of my disciples, she was a doctor, passed away last year. And her name was Vera Dolezalová, and she was a translator for me. She told me a story that in Russia they made an experiment with animals. So one rabbit gave birth to three babies. And after 10 days, they took the babies away, all three to different areas. About 100 km, 50 km distances. And they killed one baby while eating grass. That mother jumped, and she put the grass out of her mouth, and she was not eating for two days. Well, after 20 days, they killed the second one. And the same thing happened to the rabbit mother. She was looking in different directions. Mother is mother. You know the pain of the mother. Father is, of course, also sharing with, but still it is said the blood is thicker than the water. The mother is a creator. She gave her body to this child. Then they killed that mother rabbit, and that small baby, which was ten or thirty, one month or one and a half months, he was jumping, falling down, and very nervous. Heartbeat. This was an experiment in Russia, in one magazine. So she told me this story. So any animals, animals know before through their instinct. We don't know. We don't know when the earthquake will be. But the dogs, the cats, the cows, the birds, they know. So when they come to know that they will be killed, then a kind of fear appears, a certain fear in the whole body. In the flesh, muscles, in the blood, in the nerves, and it is killed. So, if we know that some of our family members are killed somewhere, how sad we are, how angry we are, and we go to the police, many things. But these animals, innocent creatures, to whom should they complain? And where should they go? But they have the pain. So it is said, "My mother's will can't do anything against it, but her heart will curse you." And that is the effect on our body, our emotions, in our mind, and our soul. So before I spoke about the creation, there was, let's say, a cosmic parliament. If so many jīvas, the souls, have developed, where should they go? How do they come to this earth? Okay? They will be lying just like a stone. Then the souls will have only the heaviness for the earth. They should do something. How will they come back without doing some karma, action? You cannot go forward or backward. Good karmas lead you to liberation; bad karmas lead to hell. God cannot always clean your karmas, so they said, "Okay, what should we do?" So Agnidev, the fire, said, "I will enter their body as fire." What does that mean? Jāṭharāgni. What is jāṭharāgni? Digestive fire. What will they digest? Such a burning in the stomach, so they will eat anything. So when you are very hungry, very, very hungry, one-week-old bread without butter and cheese is so tasteful because of that fire in the Jāṭharāgni. So they said, "Very good." But some of them, like you, asked, "What will they eat?" Then it is said, jīva jīva bhakṣate, life will eat life. Then it's sin. That's why they will go and come back, go and come back. Then how will they get liberation? Then we create one more. A human, so a human should not eat other creatures. And therefore, the grains, nuts, milk, honey, fruits, etc.—vegans, now the vegans begin. So that is how we cannot compare the humans with the animals' food. So Āyurveda has a lot of treatments. Unfortunately, some of Āyurveda's they are also suggesting some fish. But this subject we will take next time. So yoga is for you. About 22 years ago, I was in Washington, New York. There is yoga in their life also, everywhere. And one of the persons who is sitting here, she was with me then. And one of the persons who is sitting here, she was with me, then we went to the old home. And there was one 102-year-old lady in an old home, and she was teaching yoga there. And she told me and showed me a picture of her master. He was in New York and teaching yoga. And she was 102 years old, active like him. And she said her master said, "You have yoga. Use it or lose it." So you have the yoga. It doesn't cost you anything, except one or two hours. You will enjoy your life, a long life, a healthy life, a happy life. I wish you all the best, and please practice yoga in daily life. There is no competition, there is no challenge, just for your well-being. And this you can give to your people for the well-being of the Czech people. To protect other creations and vegetation. You know, bees are dying. Your country, where I told you before, is a country of milk and honey. Milk is manipulated, pesticides. Honeys, they are also dying, the bees. Till today, no scientist has been born who can make honey like a honey bee makes honey. And no scientist can make even one drop of milk or blood which can compare with your blood. And in our blood, he is from generation to generation. Hundreds of years, it finds in your body. So God is God. We can't become God. But we can become the devotee of God. So God will liberate us. Wish you all the best. God bless you. Thank you for coming and listening, and if there was something you didn't like, forgive me. God bless you. Om Śānti, Śānti, Śānti. Ādi Om. Thank you.
