Cultural tolerance

A spiritual discourse on cultural preservation, peace, and the true meaning of yoga.

"Bhārat is known as the cradle of culture. In one cradle, sixteen children were raised. That cradle did not fight the arrival of the next child."

"Yoga in daily life is that which works for the body, mind, consciousness, intellect, and soul—harmony of body, mind, and soul."

Following opening prayers, the speaker addresses the global struggle to protect language and culture, advocating for the Vedic model of harmony where diverse traditions coexist like trees in a garden. He critiques the commercialization of yoga and environmental destruction, emphasizing that real yoga is an inner discipline leading to non-violence and peace. The core message is the imperative for personal change, illustrated by a story of Mahatma Gandhi, concluding that peace begins in the individual heart.

Oṁ Namaḥ Śrī Prabhudeepanārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Satya Sanātana Dharma Kī Blessing of Ḍālak Purījī Siddhapīṭa Paramparā. Welcome, all dear ones, spiritual seekers. I was speaking earlier in Hindi. The same problem that has begun in some Western countries has now begun in India too. Certainly, we know every government tries its best to protect its nation, culture, way of living, and language. Europe, for instance, is divided into many small countries: Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, etc. Some are smaller than Rajasthan, some are like a single district. But why? Because they fought for their mother tongue, their culture, and their traditions. For this, kings fought, and much blood was shed to save the motherland, the fatherland. This does not mean discrimination, but it must not be that the big fish eats all the small fish. A small fish may one day grow. So, large nations should not try to destroy small nations or their cultures. That is why the United Nations and governments seek peace, harmony, and understanding. But there is only one way to achieve this: if we adopt the ancient Vedic science, the science of the Vedas and Upaniṣads. In the Vedas and Upaniṣads, there is no mention of an individual God or person, but they brought harmony. It is like a field with different trees bearing different fruits. A lemon tree in your field will not fight the apple tree, asking, "Why are apples here? There should only be lemons." That is not possible. Apples, cherries, pears, nuts—all exist in one garden, in one field. All enjoy. Similarly, Bhārat is known as the cradle of culture. In one family, having five, six, seven, eight, or even sixteen children is no problem. The queen of Austria had sixteen children, yet Austria has a small population. They are perfect, doing well, proud of their culture, language, and country. But you know how hard they fought to protect that small country. In one cradle, sixteen children were raised. That cradle did not fight the arrival of the next child. Similarly, Bhārat is the cradle of culture. We accept tolerance; India has 35 official languages from South, North, East, and West, yet there is no fight. One should not fight against a small country or its language and try to destroy it. The United Nations says every voice will be heard. I said, "Yes, every voice will be heard." But will you do something for that voice? Just hearing is not enough. Listen to their pain and problems, and everyone will be protected. And not only humans—if we do not protect our nature, forests, creatures, water, rivers, and mountains, not only in India but worldwide... In India, everything is open. In other countries, they dig inside mountains so the destruction is not visible from outside. But in India, unfortunately, they dig from the roots. A mountain 150 meters high is now 100 meters deep. How can we say we are saving culture and the environment? That is why there are problems with water and everything. Yoga does not mean only practicing āsanas and prāṇāyāma. How long will you move your legs? No matter how much, one day you will not move even a little toe. With prāṇāyāma, you will breathe, but a time will come when that will also finish. What is for our soul, for our ātmā, is what we work for our inner self. If we live in harmony and balance with nature, then our Father, God, will be happy. Otherwise, God will say, "For what did I send you to this beautiful planet, Earth, India? You began to destroy it." Do not blame the animals; only we humans are destroying. Therefore, the first step is: change thyself. That is why Mahātmā Gandhi kept saying, "Be the change you want to see." What change you want to see in your country and world, change thyself. Charity begins at home, and peace begins in the heart. Yoga in daily life is that which works for the body, mind, consciousness, intellect, and soul—harmony of body, mind, and soul. Those who are truly performing and doing will attain this. But if you only say, "I am practicing yoga in daily life," how? How much harmony do you have with each other? We have millions of practitioners worldwide, but do you know their state? Why did they begin practicing alone? Because some harmony is missing. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said it should be like this: I long for my brothers and sisters of my satsaṅg, of my Gurudev. When I think of them, my eyes fill with tears. Then you will see how our education, practice, and spirituality can develop and change the world positively—through non-violence and peace. Yoga leads to non-violence and peace, yet now it has become commercial. The respected Prime Minister of India brought the message of yoga, establishing the International Day of Yoga. But many people misuse this. Of course, Modijī cannot visit every yoga center. But people like you, the Yoga in Daily Life practitioners, can change people in the world as Modijī wishes. He wants to make a positive world, so Yoga in Daily Life must work very hard and positively in the best way: yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam. It is said in the Bhagavad Gītā: your yoga sādhanā will be successful if you do karma. Niṣkāma karma. Sakāma karma will bring you back to darkness. What is selfless? We eat for ourselves—that is not selfless. We wear warm clothes—that is not selfless. Having a good room is not selfish; it is survival. We must survive, be healthy, comfortable, and relaxed to have peace to give to others. This is what we do in yoga: simple living and higher thinking. Simple living is healthy: living vegetarian, non-violent, peaceful, and eating organic food. Do not eat junk food; it destroys your mind and changes your buddhi. If you drink cool water, lassi, or juice, you are relaxed. If you drink alcohol, your vṛtti changes. The whole game of yoga depends on your vṛtti. As your vṛtti is, so you will be. And vṛttis—how is your heart? Only you know. Through kleśas and akleśas, all vṛttis, negative or positive, begin. Therefore, yoga begins with discipline, and discipline does not teach others; teach thyself. A lady once came to Mahatma Gandhijī with her ten-year-old child. She told Gandhijī, "This child eats too many sweets. Can you tell him not to eat so many sweets?" Gandhijī said, "Come after one month." She was disappointed. After one month, she returned and repeated her request. Gandhijī then told the child, "My child, do not eat too many sweets; it is not healthy." The child agreed. The lady asked, "Why didn't you tell him these two words a month ago?" Gandhijī replied, "Because one month ago, I was also eating too many sweets. I tried to see how hard it was to stop. For one month, I did not eat any sweets. Otherwise, telling an innocent child not to eat sweets while I did so would not be correct." We must become the change we want to see. Jo tum banna chaate ho, to uske liye aap apne aap ko badalo, tab aap waise hongi. Otherwise, it is like a doctor who says, "Do not drink alcohol, drink good water," but the doctor himself drinks alcohol. There are many such sayings by great persons. We must change our inner attitude. How many negative energies are in our body? From how many people have you received negative energy, blackmail, and negative thinking? We are completely polluted, and that is why we cannot work for harmony, peace, and non-violence. So let us begin again with Yoga in Daily Life. Control, control... control. Sadāvai, ajab rāt hamārā. Dekha ba, betha baaram baara, sadavai, ajab rat hamara. Das ghoda chale ish rat mein. Ajab chala para, buddhi ki lagam lagai. Hakat man husyara, sadavai, ajab rat hamara. This is Gurujī’s bhajan. Oh, my brothers, oh saints... come and see how I am enjoying in the coach I am sitting in, where ten horses are pulling my coach. Yes, these are the ten indriyas, etc. So, let us make a saṅkalpa to change ourselves positively. Do not be angry. When you become angry, one hundred days of spiritual work are destroyed. Is it easy to build up? No. It is difficult to build and easy to destroy. It is hard to climb a mountain peak but easy to fall down quickly. And that means you are damaged. Today, we must preserve our culture. I always say in Europe and elsewhere: you lost your culture and now search for it in India. But India has also lost its culture. They think Western culture is the best. What is Bollywood? What are they dancing and doing? Indian culture is destroyed by these Bollywood films. As long as this continues, it will affect not only India but the whole world. Europeans tell me they do not like these Indian films; they switch off the television. They say, "Why are Indians so restless? There is no peaceful film." All is restless; there is no peace. Our Ṛṣis, Munis, and wise people were beautiful and peaceful. Our culture, philosophy, spirituality, ancestors, and ṛṣis were very peaceful. That is why the mantras in this world come from India: "Oṁ śānti, śānti, śānti." Every language has the word "peace," but they never chant it. When I chant before or after my lecture in other countries, everyone looks wondering, "What happened? What kind of yoga is he teaching?" But when I explain, they understand. In English, there is the word "peace," but they do not use it. They say, "Silent, shut up," which is opposite to peace. Indians use the phrase "pin silent." Why not say "śānti"? People in Europe do not understand "pin silent." So when I speak there, I say, "Be silent." They ask, "Who should be silent?" The yogi. Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ, sarve santu nirāmayāḥ, sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu, mā kacid duḥkha bhāgbhavet. Who said this, and in which holy books? Not many know. Oṁ dhyo antarikṣaṁ janti hi pratavi śānti, apaśanti, osadaya śānti. Who said in which books that trees need śānti? They know trees need peace. Now, with music, all birds and animals suffer. The rules of nature state that after sunset, God made everything relaxed and peaceful. Gurujī said, "Peace and bliss are the result of satsaṅg." You can achieve peace and bliss only through satsaṅg. The second verse of Gurujī says, "Enter the kingdom of God through sacrifice." Yes, do not be greedy. Give, give, give further. Then realize oneness in everyone. Gurujī said, "One in all, all in one." But even in my school, from one classroom to another, from one teacher to another, there is jealousy. They cross paths without saying, "How are you?" How then can you bring peace? Yoga in life is designed to bring peace, harmony, understanding, and happiness. God gave us peace, happiness, harmony, and joy freely. God does not charge money. If you are happy, God gave you happiness freely. Then why are you not happy? Digest this. If someone tells you something is not good, why do you explode? Those filled with anger, hate, and jealousy are like popcorn on a hot griddle. Tawa pe ek makkī kā dānā rakā, phat phut jāyegā, phullā ho jātā hai. Hota ki nahīṅ hotā hai? A person without inner peace, filled with anger, has lost the human chance. Therefore, Śānti! Śānti!... Oṁ Śānti! Oṁ Śānti!... Oṁ! Oṁ Śānti, Oṁ Śānti Oṁ, Oṁ Śānti, Oṁ Śānti Oṁ Śānti, Oṁ Oṁ Śānti, Oṁ Śānti Śānti, Oṁ Oṁ Śānti Oṁ Śānti, Oṁ Śānti,... Oṁ Oṁ Śānti Oṁ Śānti... Oṁ Deep Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai! Devādhi Deva Devīśvara Mahādeva Kī Jai! Hindu Dharma Saṁvrat Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān Kī Jai! Alak Purījī Mahādeva Kī Jai! Satya Sanātana Dharma Kī Jai! Oṁ! Oṁ!
