The Harmony of Yoga and Āyurveda

A discourse on the harmony of Yoga and Āyurveda.

"Āyurveda and Yoga are like two wings for a bird to fly. Similarly, our soul flies to the Brahmaloka with Yoga and Āyurveda."

"The first slogan in Āyurveda is: 'The first happiness is a healthy body.'... Health is not all, but without health, all is nothing."

Swami Maheshvarananda delivers a talk on the integrated life science of Yoga and Āyurveda. He explains that the primary happiness is health (Niroga) and outlines a series of sukhas, or happinesses, that constitute a harmonious life, including a healthy body, a prosperous home, an obedient spouse, good children, trustworthy neighbors, and self-sufficiency like having a milk cow. He discusses principles of diet, discipline, and family life, shares a story about the sage Charaka, and explains the importance of digestive fire (Jāṭharāgni). The talk concludes with reflections on the soul's journey and the ultimate guidance of spirituality.

It is very pleasant: harmony, unity, happiness, oneness. Welcome. Our subject is Yoga and Āyurveda. I cannot go outside the frame of Yoga and Āyurveda. Āyurveda and Yoga are like two wings for a bird to fly. Similarly, our soul flies to the Brahmaloka with Yoga and Āyurveda. This is a lifelong work. It is not difficult. You may not even know that you are following Yoga and Āyurveda if you live life with discipline. The first slogan in Āyurveda is: "The first happiness is a healthy body." Āyurveda says the first happiness is a healthy body. The body is not everything, but everything is nothing without this body. Health is not all, but without health, all is nothing. The first happiness, first joy, first comfort is good health. It is called Niroga. The word Niroga. "Ni" means no, "roga" means illness. Never be ill. When I first came to your country, I read one word which is in your country, and it has a good meaning. He said, "Rogla." I do not know what Rogla means in your country. Rogla restaurant or something. What does it mean? It is the name of a mountain, a hill. Roglā. So that hill is full of illness. But in Indian language, rogla means very, very ill. In Hindi, roga, rogla would mean something very, very sick. And nī rogla, nī means never ill. And nī would mean never, never sick, nī roga. So, Phelā Sukha, first happiness, first comfort, first joy, first feeling balanced, means without disease. And this we can achieve through Yoga and Āyurveda. If you want to enjoy your life, then be healthy. And if you suffer in life, then have a lot of money. You may call yourself very rich, but it is not happy. Not happy. So, if you are healthy, even if you do not have food for two days, no problem. We are struggling to be healthy. The happiest person is the one who is healthy. First happiness is the one who is healthy, Māyā, in your house. You have many Māyās here. The girl's name is Māyā. Maya means prosperity: wealth, health and wealth. So māyā means that we, as humans, are now civilized, and when a guest comes home, we should have at least a glass to offer water, or a cup. We need something. So, from where do the things come? You have to buy them. With what do you buy? With money. And from where does the money come? Work. And which kind of work do you work? Etc. It is like a snowball. When you roll the snowball, it gets more and more snow. The small snowball becomes a big ball. So Niroga: healthy and wealthy. Now, before I told you, money does not make you happy. But now money makes you happy. What is the difference? I am speaking different things now. Talking opposite, same as what I spoke before. Yes. So there is one beautiful poem. "Sain, itanā dijiye, jisme kutum samay me bhūkhā nahīṁ rahūṁ, sādhu ne bhūkhā jāye." Sain means God. O God. O Bože. Give me that much in which I can feed my children, my family. In which my family can live comfortably. Not more than this. The family is comfortable, has something to eat, all facilities, "Me bhūkhā ne rahūṁ" and "I also do not remain hungry," "Sādhu ne bhūkhā jāye" and those who come to my door, they should not go hungry, that is it. So Āyurveda says, just maintain your family life, that is all. Do not run away somewhere to work far away, and have your family somewhere else. Parents need children, and children need parents. Children need a father, and children need a mother. It is very interesting. We have little babies here, children. These little children are sitting here. And the child gets up and sits on the lap of the father. And it gets up and goes to sit on the lap of the mother. The children are balancing love between father and mother. So, it is very important that parents remain together with the children. This is the principle of Āyurveda. Then you are healthy. Otherwise, the wife has depression, and the husband has a headache, the grandparents have constipation, everything is in disharmony. So, a healthy family is healthy spirituality and a healthy society. Nowadays, you separate from the family. We know children love the father, children love the mother. And you put your children in front of the court and ask the child, "Where would you like to stay, with mother or with father?" You are cutting the child in two pieces, but still, children cannot decide to stay with father or with mother. Better not to have children. And why did you marry? And if you marry, then you stay happy for life. Women are women. It does not matter, this one or that one. Yes. And man is a man. What is it? It is something, the disharmony in your mind. That is why you, because you are not nirog. You are rogī. Yes, that is called ill thoughts. Those are painful thoughts. So, duḥkha garme māyā. So we need to, how to say, to survive. Second, husband and wife have mutual understanding. It is said the wife should be following you faithfully. But it means husband also. So, mutual understanding between wife and husband. That is very important. Obedient. Must not be only the wife obedient. Husband should also be obedient. Then, in your household, it is very balanced. Then comes the fourth point. The children, obedient children, learn from parents how to live happily together. Parents should not quarrel in front of children. And the parents should not quarrel in front of each other. If you want to quarrel, then go in the forest and touch tree to tree. The trees will calm you down; the tree will give you treatment. You will come home with normal thoughts. So, dominating the children should be obedient. Nowadays, because you did not give them education, you were not giving them an example. So, very soon they will tell the father, "You are stupid." And he complained to his wife. The children said like this, she said, "Because you are like that, Hari Om." This is Āyurveda's principle to keep you and our society balanced, peaceful, and harmonious. Phelā sukha nirog kāyā, dujā sukha garve māyā, tījā sukha patnī obedient, cauṭhā sukha children, and the fifth happiness. Fifth happiness, that is very important. The good neighbor. To have a good neighbor. Yes. Neighbor, we have only one wall between. Otherwise, we are like one family, so neighbors should be very good persons. You trust them completely. You can go on holidays to Japan, China, Africa for six months, but you trust, depending on your neighbors, they will do everything. They will take care of everything. So the fifth happiness, the fifth sukha, is a good neighbor. Neighbors are like your real mother and father. Real brother and sister, that is it. Your neighbor has a right to educate your children. And you love the children of your neighbors as your own child. The sixth happiness: Garme gai. You have in your home, at your home, in your farm, one cow, a milky cow. So that you have your own cow milk or goat milk. So that you have good milk. There are four different kinds of milk, and you should know these four different kinds of milk. And if you do not know, then still you do not know. First milk, the mother's milk. Second milk, the cow. It means all animals' milk. Does not matter which animal. A mother is a mother. Mother's love can produce milk. You cannot compare yourself with your wife. He cannot give even half a cup of milk to his child, but it is the mother who creates very pure, tasty, beautiful, clean milk. So, it does not matter—human, cow, goat, sheep, buffaloes? Tiger? Did you ever drink tiger milk? Did you test? If you did not drink tiger milk, you did not drink. What did you drink in this world? So let us go tomorrow for milking the tigers. And it is said that tiger milk can only be kept in a golden pot. Otherwise, it will poison; it will spoil. There is one story about how to milk the mother tiger. You would like to hear about that? Next time. Tomorrow in Zagreb, we will go to milk the tiger. And third, milk. Baṅrāī kā. Baṅrāī means the vegetable. The milk of all different plants. Banyan tree, fig tree, fig. When you take the fig, you know, that is the milk, so that is called vegetable milk. First milk, mātkā, second milk, gāykā, third milk, banrājkā, and fourth milk, which is the fourth milk? This is a question for you: which is the fourth milk? And that you should tell me, then think over. Yes, there is a fourth milk. Mother's milk means all animals: first, own mother; second, all animals which give the milk. Third is vegetation, and what is the fourth? Milk, yeah. But amṛta from where? It is not that it will come next time. You think I will give you all knowledge already today? It takes lives and lives to tell you what is Mokṣa. Yeah, that is it. So Āyurveda said you should have in your home, in your farm, that animal which gives you fresh milk. And your own kitchen garden, your vegetables and fruits. So these are the principles to follow as the discipline of the Āyurveda. So, the milk of plants, vegetables, and all kinds of herbs—and in there are three different kinds of milk: jaḍī, bhūtī, vanaspatī. Jadi, bhūti, vanaspati. These are two kinds of milk. Jadi means the roots. All medicines which are coming from Āyurveda are different kinds of roots, but not those roots which a tree will survive long. Only that root which the herb grows only once and dies. And bhūti means the herbal plant. The herbs, jaḍī, and bhūtī. So the herbs which will grow, give seeds, and die. Now, that we can collect as herbs, and we take the milk out of that in the form that we little boil or we soak in the water overnight, and the essence comes out. That is the milk of the plants. Then, the third one, vanaspatī. Van means the forest. And patī means the leaves. Pati means husband. Pati means leaves. We take the leaves of that tree. We do not kill the tree. So mostly, those leaves, when they are ripe, they fall down, and we collect them. And also utilize it as the medicine. Make a powder of the bark of the tree also. So these are the heart of Āyurveda. One disciple comes to the master and asks, "Master, I want to become your disciple." In that time, it was not easy to get a mantra. Those masters were not so kind like I am. I give you the mantra immediately. Sometimes they let you wait two, three lives. Well, so the master gave him one duty. He gave him one task: "Go and find or bring me some herb or a plant or a tree." Which has no value, any plant, even grass, brings which is not useful at all. So he went away. He went through many, many countries, the whole world. He designed the plant, the name, with aqua color. He painted. From which country? He asked the people, "What is the good thing in this plant, or which has a bad effect? Is this useful or not?" Everything they told, this is good for this, this, this. It is a poison. But this poison root is very, very good to heal the wound quickly. He brought it with Guruji, so many papers, and he put it in front of Guruji and said, "Gurudev, I failed. I did not pass this examination. I wandered all five continents. And I asked all farmers, 'Is there anything which is not useful?' And they told what is good for what. Look, Master, I designed the picture, the color, the flowers, the fruits, the seeds, the roots, how it looks, its life, how long it lives. But I did not find anything which was not useful." Master said, "You passed the examination," and from that began Āyurveda. Charaka, this was the story of the Charaka, and the Charaka have very big books, volumes, and it is written there, everything about Āyurveda. So, Āyurveda needs precaution. If you eat Āyurvedic medicine, then you should not eat certain things. Then the nice medicine called Chyavanprāś, it was the Chyavanprāś which a blind person can again open the eyes, but those herbs are not there anymore. Chyavanprāś is something now like a gem on the bread, so people go to India and buy the Chyavanprāś. It is very tasty, and a lot of sugar inside amla, and this and this, people are eating with a spoon, two spoons, I do not know. I only know my Austrian disciples, how they are eating, because I am not living in this country, but my Austrian disciples are very disciplined because they know I live there, so even I control their food, Āyurveda. That is why Austrians are healthier, because I had trained them. That is it. Anyhow, if you consume the Āyurvedic Chyavanprāś, not more than one month, or the Vaidya will advise you, maybe maximum three months. This makes you young again. I tried it once. And I became younger. I said, "Oh, Maheshvarānanda, no. Be old." So this is called, what do you call it, did I say it? 7 plus. So take 7 plus in the morning. One big spoon, or two teaspoons. With milk. Someone said, "No, I do not like milk. Can I take soy milk? Can I take coconut milk?" No. Pure cow milk. And also, in the evening when you go to sleep, one spoon also with the milk. Now, for these two months, or one month, you eat this tea powder, then for one month you should follow the rules. So, during this course, when you take medicine, do not eat any kinds of beans except mung. No yogurt, no sour things, no orange, no vegetable which creates gas. More than leaves, vegetables like spinach, etc. Do not utilize any kind of oil. Only ghee, cow ghee, and Croatian, they will die if they do not eat the olive oil. They survive on the olive oil. But you have to survive two months without olive oil. So, do not eat oranges, do not eat apples. No, any citrus fruit. So, yoga says, Yoga begins with discipline. Āyurveda also said, Āyurvedic medicine begins with discipline, and I found that Western people do not understand, and that is why Āyurveda does not affect us properly. So there are many other different medicines. Therefore, you should not take that one. But Āyurveda can make what we call kāya kalpa. Kāya means body. Kalpa means regenerating. So Āyurveda Yoga is the science of body, mind, and soul. Yoga is the science of body, mind, consciousness, and soul. When you utilize Āyurveda, you need not look to your body to see how you look. Very energetic. Feeling very happy. Very healthy. Enjoying eating, enjoying sleeping, everything. Disciplined Āyurveda. Āyurveda is a life. Āyur means life, and Veda means the knowledge, the knowledge of life, how to live long. But we have one problem, and that problem is our... can you try to make one experiment from morning breakfast till the dinner? Do not eat lunch, or you can have lunch while sitting at one table and chair. If you stand up and bring something from the kitchen, you break the discipline. So, in one sitting, eat. So, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Between, except water, count how many times you ate something or drank coffee or tea, cold drink, alcohol, chewing gum, or a little nut or little cake, cookies. For many people, it is impossible to remain three hours without putting something in the mouth, except water. And that is the cause of all our diseases. Because the Creator has created a digestive fire, that is called Jāṭharāgni. And Jāṭharāgni will burn everything. There will be nothing remaining which can make you ill. If we had been disciplined, we would not have gotten cancer. And it is sometimes, while fasting, you can cure cancer. But we do not have the strength now. But it is that Jāṭharāgni will burn, eat everything from the body which is not useful for the body. All foreign activities or foreign things in our body, Jāṭharāgni will clean up. But we are very weak; we will eat something, then Jāṭharāgni will go the other direction. So, Āyurveda, you should take only the advice from that Āyurvedic doctor who has a minimum of six to eight years of Āyurveda training course. Only looking in the book, reading, buying the herbs, and giving them to others is not that. Not that. The same herb may not be good for others. Only Āyurveda can feel the pulse. Called Nāḍī Veda. The Veda means the Āyurvedic doctor. And he has the knowledge, so Āyurveda is a science. It is a very big science. All this homeopathy, allopathy, they all came out of the Āyurveda, but they manipulated it in a different way. So yoga and Āyurveda will make us very healthy, happy, and give us a long life and spiritual achievement. So, thanks to God, again we awoke our awareness towards Āyurveda. But this is, Āyurveda is just something like homeopathic. The homeopathic is just a little sugar ball, and when we give it sometimes to a doctor, I say, "Oh, what a joke." There is, in homeopathy, a first, which is a blessing. It is a blessing in that. The second is a vibration. So it is not a quantity, but the quality. One of my disciples here, she is sitting here, and she takes homeopathic medicine. And her doctor said, "Give her only one little sugar ball," and the doctor said, "Hold this sugar ball for half a minute, that is all." Put it back again in the bottle. Only while touching, the vibration goes, and she feels good. Either she is psychic, not normal, or she is so sensitive, or is it true that she feels good in the medicine? Similar satsaṅg, we are sitting here. And about what I am talking, you are swallowing everything. You understand. You feel my voice and the words. Similarly, Āyurveda and homeopathy are like that. Then there are many other sciences: acupressure, acupuncture, and many others, but Āyurveda is the first. First is yoga, then Āyurveda. So, my dear, we shall think it over. There are some people from Croatia who are studying in India, and the Indian government is also promoting both yoga and Āyurveda very much. So, let us decide to live healthy. Means live long. We do not know what will happen after death. Nobody has seen us. Then it is gone. When the soul is going out of the body, it goes with such a high speed in the darkness, like this flame. Can you imagine? You can imagine this flame in dark space, high speed. That is a soul. It is said, you cannot dip in a river in the same water twice. You cannot dive in the same water in that river twice. Because we dip in, we come out. And again we wandered deep in, but that water is already gone. New water is coming. Similarly, this light, the soul, is gone, will not come back in the body. We are crying for the soul. We touch him, "Come on, please, father, mother." We go to the... Grave, we bring the flowers, but that is not here anymore. But we humans, we are very emotional, we are traditional, but sometimes animals also go there where their baby or father or mother died. Yes, there is like this. So the soul goes with the speed. The destiny leads far. No one is there, no one. There is no bottom. Endless, there is no hold. The mental feeling is there, the emotion is there, the memory is there, everything is there, but this physical body is not there, and no one can help you. Neither can you help yourself. This is like you fall down from the ceiling to the ground. You cannot hold yourself. Similarly, this hall is, we do not know where it is going. There is no north, south, west, east. There is no above, no below. No direction that time, the soul has fear, but no one can listen to you. Only our karma and our mantra, our spirituality, there you will see what means the guru. Before, you do not know. At that time, you will feel that light and guidance, and many other things. Then you will remember, then you will see. Aum Śrīdīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavad Gītāe Devādhi Deva, Deveśvara Mahādeva Satguru Svāmī Madhavānajī Bhagavad Gītāe Satya Sanātana.
