Removing pollution from the body and mind

A spiritual discourse on the ancient origins and modern practice of yoga and Ayurveda.

"The science of yoga is ancient. Ayurveda is also that old."

"Health is not everything, but without health, everything is nothing."

A speaker addresses an audience, passionately recounting the divine origins of yoga from Shiva and Ayurveda from Dhanvantari, using the story of Hanuman fetching the Sanjivani herb to illustrate Ayurveda's ancient power. He critiques official claims that these sciences are only 5,000 years old, urging listeners to petition the government for correction. The talk expands to cover the purpose of yoga in overcoming stress and mental impurities (mala, vikshepa, avarana), explains how specific asanas like Bhujangasana affect the mind and body, and reflects critically on human nature, pollution, and dietary habits.

Sanātana dharma kī, Bhāratamātā kī. Yoga, the science of body, mind, and soul, was brought by Swayambhū Śiva. This science was given to us by God Śiva, so we do not know how old it is. The science of yoga is ancient. Ayurveda is also that old. Ayurveda is known to us since the churning of the ocean. Do you know who is the god of Āyurveda? Dhanvantrī. Dhanvantrī brought the nectar, called Amṛt Kāleś, and that is the beginning of Āyurveda. Long ago, before God Rāma—when there was a battle in Sri Lanka and the brother of Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, was injured by a poisonous arrow—God Rāma, who incarnated more than 10,000 years ago, needed help. They sought an Ayurvedic doctor. The first medical science began with Āyurveda. Not homeopathy, naturopathy, or allopathy; the roots and beginning of medical science is Āyurveda. The Vaidya came to Sri Lanka and diagnosed Lakṣmaṇa's pulse. He said, "Lakṣmaṇa will die as soon as the sun rises." God Rāma was very sad and wanted to save his brother. He asked the Ayurvedic doctor, "Is there any remedy, any medicine to save the life of Lakṣmaṇa?" The doctor said, "Yes, there is, and that's called Sañjīvanī." But that Sañjīvanī is in the Himalayas, and Sri Lanka is very far—four or five hours by airplane. The herb Sañjīvanī had to be brought before sunrise for Lakṣmaṇa to survive. Who went to bring the Sañjīvanī? Hanumanjī, the son of the wind, Pavanuśruta Hanumān. With a speed higher than our aeroplanes, he brought the Sañjīvanī. The Vaidya made the medicine and put the drops in Lakṣmaṇa's mouth, and Lakṣmaṇa got up. That was the power of Āyurveda. I tell this short story because it is a great pity that the department of Ayurveda of India declares Ayurveda is only 5,000 years old. This is completely wrong. Our dear sister should write to the government of India to make a correction. Perhaps they are referring to Cārakarṣi, who lived 5,000 years ago, but Ayurveda is older than that. Do not trust or believe that Ayurveda is only 5,000 years old. Everyone, write a letter to the Prime Minister of India. Send emails to his office. How can they say yoga is 5,000 years old and Ayurveda is 5,000 years old? What a pity. Mian Khad. Perhaps they limit yoga from the time of Patañjali and limit Ayurveda with Caraka. Then they should not use the word "ancient science." I ask all who are listening via webcast around the whole world to send emails to the Prime Minister's office asking: how do you declare Āyurveda as only 5,000 years old? Here we are sitting, the disciples of Dhanvantari, because the roots of her yoga and Āyurveda come from Dhanvantari. Our sister is a disciple of our dear Ṣaḍeśmukh. We welcome her also in the name of Ṣaḍeśmukh. Who knows the Ṣaḍeśmukh? Hands up. Good, many people know. She will give very good treatment and knowledge about Ayurveda. We are very happy and congratulate the people of Debrecen that in this university the sister is here to teach yoga and life. On Stress and the Purpose of Yoga Now, the second thing: stress. I explained about stress yesterday. How can one create more stress? You heard a story yesterday. The same person had a lot of stress and couldn't sleep. I told half the story yesterday. Full of stress, he was a dentist and couldn't sleep. At midnight, he went to the street and began to shout, making many different noises. Of course, he was not drunk. The neighbors called the police. Sometimes police came, sometimes they didn't. One day, a few people called the police station. The man was shouting something. The police came and said, "Sir, what are you doing here? Why are you making noise?" He said, "Well, I'm hunting away the elephants." The police asked, "Why are you making noise? I'm hunting the elephants." The policeman said, "But I don't see any elephants here." The man replied, "You can't see them because I have hunted them away." When you have stress, you are very clever, but you can't sleep. Therefore, meditation can lead us to the harmony of body, mind, and soul. The Roots and Practice of Yoga There are many postures of yoga. The original postures which Śiva has given to us are not that many. We have now created many different postures, but the roots are from Śiva. There is also the so-called mantra, the science of mantra. Without mantra, you cannot proceed. Mantra is like a torchlight to walk in the darkness. Practicing mantra will give you purification of mala, vikṣepa, and āvaraṇa. There are three obstacles. Mala means impurity: physical, emotional, or mental impurity; impure thoughts, words, food; impurity in the body, in the air, in our nourishment, in our water. The world is now completely polluted, and this pollution creates disharmony in our body. Then there is vikṣepa, the disturbances, which also create illnesses. Vikṣepa also occurs when you have no good relations; suddenly, illness comes. There is personal and impersonal vikṣepa. And āvaraṇa. Āvaraṇa is the symbol of ignorance. Āvaraṇa is like a curtain; we cannot see further. This āvaraṇa of ignorance can only be removed through good society, good people, through satsaṅg, meditation, and doing selfless work. Helping hands have more value than folded hands. The awakening of our eyes, realizing that knowledge, the vidyā, the jñāna, is the part—you can say self-realization. There is nothing further than jñāna. That is called ātmā jñāna. Through this, our ātmā, our jīvātmā, will feel happy, relaxed, and comfortable in this body. This jīva, the soul, will find peace. Therefore, Gurujī used to say, "Peace and bliss are the result of satsaṅg." The peace and bliss we can gain through satsaṅg. When you practice yoga, when you are doing the postures, there are two kinds of yoga practices. One is just like body warming, gymnastics. The second is as yoga, uniting body, mind, and the Ātmā. There is the spirituality. Spirituality means purity: pure thinking, pure food, pure behavior, pure thoughts. When we perform our postures with pure thoughts, then you will gain good health. There is also using the mantra and positive thinking. All the names, mostly all the names of postures, are from nature. Why do we call it the cobra posture? Cobra—why does he raise up his head and half of his body? Generally, they do not. But when the cobra feels some kind of danger, then he rises up, or he becomes angry, anxious, fearful, frightened; then he rises up. After a while, again, he goes down. Why? What happened? We connect with this in our posture as a cobra. We know all about the science of Kuṇḍalinī, and we know the chakras. We know the energies. That kind of anxiety, fear, restlessness—all this is energy existing or dormant in the Svādhiṣṭhāna chakra. When you are angry, sad, or restless, you go to the Bhujaṅgāsana. After practicing three or four rounds, your anger will disappear. Anxiety will disappear. Peace will appear, certainty will appear. This is the result of the Bhujaṅgāsana as a mental effect, physical effect. One posture influences our body, our mind, and our awareness. So when your husband is angry with you or nervous, then tell him, "Get into the Bhujangāsana." 100%, he will be very relaxed and happy. Of course, not only husband and wife can do it, but also children. Restless children who cannot concentrate—it is the Buddha-jaṅga-āsana. Similarly, there are many, many postures. There are 84 main postures. There are 8.4 million different creatures, and these 84 postures are multiplied into many other postures. There are postures about trees, rivers, mountains. I do not think there is any posture called the human posture. No, there is not. We declare ourselves one of the best creatures. We are the best. But who declares this? Ourself. When someone is talking good about oneself, it is a self—what do you call it? Giving the self word? I've forgotten. So do not make thyself that you are the best. Ask any animals if the humans are good; ask your dog, he will not accept. Your cat, snake, even a bird will not tell. Yes, the bird dares to sit on the shoulder or on the head of the tiger or any animal, but the bird will never come and sit on the shoulder of humans because the radiance of the human body is very dangerous, and no creature can accept humans. Human Nature and Pollution There are 8.4 million different creatures. One is a human. I belong to that also with you, yes? I am also a human being. 8.4 million different creatures. Which one makes more pollution of this planet? Who is making more pollution? Humans, not animals, make that much pollution. Now, which creature is more stinky? Human. Which creature is more ill on this earth? Do not support me, okay? Please tell honestly. How many hospitals are built for humans and animals? Mostly for humans. Does any animal require a hospital, except the house pet? And why are the house pets so ill? Who is guilty? The house pet or the master of the house pet? Human. Which animals are making a conference? Is there a conference made by any animals? Who is making many, many conferences? So in every one of these points, there is a negative, negative, negative. Then how can we declare humans are the best ones? It is really a pity that we lost our human nature. We lost the way of living, and that is why we are ill. We are producing so much pollution because the way of eating is wrong. We have an intestine 8.5 meters long. It takes time for food to pass through. Mostly, those who eat meat are creatures who have a short intestine. So, for humans, meat eating is not designed by the creator. Our way of eating, way of drinking, way of living, and way of sleeping is completely wrong. That is why mostly suffering, mostly fighting, the wars, etc., is done by humans. Now, will God open the door to Brahmaloka for the humans or for other creatures? All the wild animals do their duty. They live according to what God has given them to do. We do not even trust God. God does not dare to come to us because, as soon as God will come, we will crucify him again. Half will believe it's a god, half will say it's stupid, and another will say it's not a god. How to Survive and a Final Reflection So now, how to survive? This is the question. The answer is to practice your yoga. There is one poem: "O God, give me that much that I can feed my family for my existence. And if someone comes to my door, they don't go with empty hands." That is all. But now it is a competition, a challenge. Money, money... money. And all those who have so much money—one day when that one dies, you cannot take even a little ring from your finger. Everything will remain here. Everything you have to leave, and you fly in the forest of the universe. So for what? And for what? There was one man who had a son. He gave him an education and did everything. Someone asked, "What will you do for your son or your daughter? Have you some property for them? Have you some money for them? Some security for them?" He said, "No." Why? He said: If your son is good, or your daughter, they will earn money and they are living. Why should I struggle to give them money? And if your child is not that good and has improper behavior, whatever property or money I make for them, he or she will destroy it in drugs, alcohol, and other things. Therefore, I do not do anything. Yes, I grow him up and give him an education. I give food. When he is grown, 20-25, he should find his way. Why should I bother about this? There is a very beautiful sentence in Hindi; it sounds much better than what I can explain: "Putra saputra tokya dhan sañcī." If your child is good enough, why are you struggling to collect for them? And "putra saputra tokya dhan sanchi"—if your child is not that, has bad habits, whatever you will earn, it will destroy. That is it. You know how many problems you have in this time in the world. Children are completely out of order. They always ask the mother and father, "Give me money, please, mother, give me money," and they go taking injections, taking medicine, illness, and so on. So go the path of Āyurveda. Āyurveda means the knowledge of life, of health. It is said, "Health is not everything, but without health, everything is nothing." Yoga and Āyurveda, Yuga Īśa Yudhvidā.
