Questions and answers from Debrecen

A satsang addressing practical yogic living and dietary discipline.

"If you really want to do your yoga sādhānā, then, first control over your tongue, the test. You will see that 90% of all difficulties in your body will disappear."

"Yoga begins with discipline. Atha yoga anuśāsana."

Swami Satyananda Saraswati answers questions from attendees, first offering advice on starting a yogic farm community in Hungary. He then delivers a core teaching on foundational spiritual practice, emphasizing strict dietary control (limited intake, no snacking, avoidance of processed foods and alcohol) as the primary step for health, discipline, and preparing for meditation. He expands on the importance of satsang, prāṇāyāma, and consuming local, organic, seasonal foods, using soy cultivation and an anecdote about Australian milk regulations as cautionary examples.

Dear Swamiji, we would like the first steps on the way towards a self-sufficient lifestyle. Please give us advice on how we could operate a farm somewhere in Hungary where we could lead a yogic lifestyle, as well as provide for our financial... No problem, do it. Hungary has enough land. But only one crop will not solve your purpose. So you should be able to produce two kinds of crops. One is like a glass house, and the other is like an organic garden. The land is yours, if you have the land. Or make a community, a society. In the beginning, just begin as a hobby. And then, after, you will see how it is developing. Make some farmhouse. In summer, make the retreat, a yoga retreat. Anuṣṭhānas, mantras, prāṇāyāmas. So people will be very happy to be in nature. This is how you can begin. Next question. Oh, you are all perfect. No questions. Okay. So the stress—we have so many different kinds of vṛttis in this world. If you want to come to the spiritual qualities, then the first is to control your diet. And also, a limited diet. So don't consume too much sweet. Junk food, no restaurant food; prepare yourself at home, limited, so nothing remains over. The other point is, between two meals, you should not eat anything. No nuts, no apples, no fruits, no coffees, no teas. So, at least four or five hours remain without anything except water. This is a training for that yogī who would like to be disciplined and get towards the Brahmajñāna. Ez egy olyan jóginak a kiképzése, aki szeretne önfegyelmezet lenni, és szeretne a Brahmagyāna felé előre haladni. Your age will prolong. Az életkorod meghosszabbodik. The disease will also disappear, or will be very little. A betegségek eltűnnek, vagy nagyon csekélyek lesznek. Mostly you can get maybe what we call the flu. It's cold, that's all. You will have no more problems with the allergy. The immunity will be stronger in the body. That is just controlling the diet. If you have diabetes or some other disease, and the doctor tells you that you have to eat at a certain time, this is, of course, a different thing. So, if you really want to do your yoga sādhanā, then, first control over your tongue, the test. You will see that 90% of all difficulties in your body will disappear. Joint problems, livers, kidneys, glands, all. You will lose a lot of weight, and you will become more happy and healthy. So this is the main point to achieve yoga, the aim of your practice. After that comes practicing. So as much as you will practice discipline, the best is every day, same time. Know, because you are staying in the same place. A person like me finds it difficult to keep time. So write in your diary what I should do. So you have to, or we should have, time for our social relations—means with the friends, free time for walking, for going, swimming, etc. Meditation must be every day. And meditation without mantra is a body without a soul. In this way, you will see that you will heal yourself without medicines. If someone has a doubt of cancer, this is the best prevention: the diet. Then the body will eat itself. So what we call the foreign symptoms in our body, our immunity will destroy everything. So this is a yoga training. It doesn't go together: over diet, over fat, and yoga exercise. You shall train your muscles—not like a bodybuilder, but according to the yoga in their life. Our inner self will be very happy. It is called that happiness will come out of you. And then you can lead others like that. That's very important. There came something from Āyurveda, and different diseases. According to Āyurveda, there are many physiological imbalances contributing to depression, anxiety, and related conditions. Type of psychologically disordered. These many things they call vikāras: substance abuse and addictions. That's also very bad. So many of you are sitting here, I can feel that you abuse alcohol. And when you abuse alcohol, then you have problems with the family and partner. The money which you spend on alcohol, you can use to buy some dry fruits for you and your family, and they will be healthier than alcohol. Like you have your engine, the diesel engine. And you put the petrol inside. What will happen? Similarly, the engine God has made in our body is not for alcohol, but for water. Water is the water. Other liquid, what is healthy: milk, juice, that's it—fruit, juice, milk, and water. This is healthier, but addiction and drugs, alcohol, even beer, alcohol, beer is not good. It is the tamas guṇa and rajas guṇa. So alcohol has rajas guṇa as well as tamas guṇa. So one day you should think, we should think, what is the purpose of my being as a human? And you should not destroy human life with such things. So the first step to initiate thyself in yoga, to get the mokṣa liberation, begins with the controlling of the diet. Very good, the sprouted seeds and salad. Less white flour, more lentils. And fresh-made chapatis. No bread is good, but it is old. Āyurveda will say one-day-old bread is already tamas guṇa. So all these kinds of restaurants which are offering some different kind of food are days old, weeks old. And there is no more life. It's a dead energy. The second point to become a yogī, a spiritual soul, a liberated one, then it is called the satsaṅg. Don't miss the satsaṅg. And have good friends who are not abusing drugs and certain things. Prāṇāyāma. Prāṇa is very, very important. It is the prāṇāyāma which can clean out even the physical diseases. The prāṇāyāma, when it goes into the body, and there are some tumors or something like this, prāṇāyām will tell, "Get out of this body! What are you doing here?" Pranayam is watching your body and taking away the devil of illness. Therefore, self-discipline is very important. And that's why what Patañjali said, "Atha yoga anuśāsana." Yoga begins with discipline. Okay, have you any questions in between? It's not that there are so many people here. Yes, you have to have more children. So that we, well, that would have been many, many people. But the announcement was only five days before, or one week. And many people have different kinds of programs: the schools, the examinations, and preparing for the summer seminars. So that's why many people could not come. Generally, they are announcing a minimum of six months. They are planning their program six months before—that the parents, old parents, children, school, office work—so there are many reasons one cannot just come. Next time, organize three months before. And put the posters and information. You will see the hall will be full. So, it's the quality of organization. Okay, next. Yes, soya. Well, when I came to Europe in the beginning, 1970, it was very much in fashion, eating what is called macrobiotic food. And there was one Chinese, I think Chinese or Japanese, who was in America, and he researched a lot about soybeans, and people were consuming a lot of soybeans. The mung dhal, green mung, and some other lentils and soya beans have higher, more proteins than in the meat. Nations like India and many others were consuming little meat; they survived and were strong and very healthy because of the lentils. That macrobiotic diet, they used to say, eat what is growing within the 40 kilometers of range of where you are living. A macrobiotic diet says that you eat foods that were produced within a maximum of 40 kilometers from your living area. Then the energy changes, and now we, within one night, we can get the fruits and vegetables and everything from China here. From Africa, we can bring it here. From America, from Mexico, from India. So now this transport is very, very strong. Of course, they want to have a business, and we want to have some fruits from the foreign countries. Here cherries don't blossom here in Europe, in this part of Europe. And it is snowing and very cold. Our cherry trees have not even leaves on them. But in the market, you can buy the cherries. Because it is coming from other countries: New Zealand, Australia. They have that time, summer. But according to the climate here, we should not eat cherries in the wintertime. So we don't follow nature, and that's why we are mostly ill. We should know which season what we should eat. So the soy was declared as it has the highest protein in the soybean. Tehát a szójáról közzétették, hogy ez a legmagasabb fehérjetartalmú étel. But unfortunately, slowly, slowly, people, because it was growing, there was more need of the soya. De lassan-lassan, mivel nőtt, ezért egyre több szójára volt szükség. And so they put all the different fertilizers: pesticides, hybrids, etc. They manipulated the soya. And it's about 25 years already, I think. The first time the soya bean was imported to Europe, and many, many countries of Europe did not let this soya come in from America. You may remember, so German did not want to let come in, Austrian didn't let come, Italian didn't let come, but, unfortunately, Switzerland let it in. You people may know this story, some of you. So, that is in this way how they manipulated all the seeds and everything. So now they say soy is not good to eat. Here in Europe, a lot of soy is grown. And when the time comes that the crops are ripe—so it takes time, as all seeds don't ripen at once—so they are spraying now the chemical, so all the soybeans, the plants, look like they are burned dark, and they harvest this all. That has a lot of poison in it. Also the soya, the sunflowers. You see the big farm, and then they spread some kind of chemicals; it looks like everything is burned. Because for them, it's easier to harvest at once. Hungary has very good soil, Hungary has very much land, agriculture; you can find some field which is organic, or virgin field, that there has been not any agriculture and no pesticides there. People are longing for organic crops, organic vegetables, etc. So now some people think soy is not good because of the pesticides. Because of the pesticides. Otherwise, the soy milk, the soy tofu, the soy oil, etc., is a lot. That's it. So if you find organic, it's good. The green mung dal has a lot of protein. If you make a soup, and every day eat mung dal soup, which has the best proteins, you need not consume meat at all. Next question: Well, some people find people who have the same aim, the same interest, and make a society for organic farming. Then, a few people together research more about it—how to do it. Also, the cows that you can supply the milk directly. In some countries, you cannot give even to your child your own cow's milk. In Australia, it's a punishment if you give direct milk to the children or to anybody. Australia, New Zealand: milk is forgotten, chemical. Now, so, but people want to have direct milk, raw milk, without pesticides. So, they give the milk for bathing, for washing yourself. So, if you want to buy the original milk, that is not for drinking, it's for bath. I was in Australia at Sunshine Coast, and they supplied me this milk, bottle milk. It's directly from cows, and warning, we were making chai, me and I think Mānsā Devī or Umā Purī was there. And there was written, "This milk is not for drinking or eating; it is for bathing." And I was so angry. Why did they give me such milk? And I telephoned to the Yamunā. Then she explained to me. I said, "Okay, but people found out why this milk is sold a lot." Because Australians are also very health-conscious. So what they do is they mix some kind of chemical in that milk. And that's all that bathing in milk. So if you drink or use it for tea or coffee, you get strong diarrhea. It's not a joke. There is a sitting where an Australian, she can say yes or no. Stand up and say yes or no. Yes, she is from Australia, but I mean, is it true what I told about milk? That's right. So stay in Hungary. Thank you. All the best.
