The power of the mantra

The Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra grants victory over death. This Vedic mantra's power is demonstrated through the story of Ṛṣi Mārkaṇḍeya. His destiny was a short life, predicted to be twelve years. Instructed by his guru, he worshipped Śiva and chanted this mantra. When the time of death arrived, he embraced a Śiva Liṅga. Lord Śiva manifested and forbade death from taking him. Thus, the ṛṣi achieved immortality. Chanting this mantra daily is said to remove sorrow, poverty, and the fear of death. The guru-given mantra is the essential seed within all mantras; its power is a proven science. Austerities and practice can burn away karma and lead to liberation. Be happy and seek liberation, not worldly entanglements. Bless others generously, as blessings hold great power.

"Only that Bholenāth Bhagavān Śiva, He can change."

"Your guru mantra becomes a seed in those other mantras."

Devadhī Dev Alak Purījī Mahādeva. Devadhī Dev Deveśvar Mahādeva. Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān. Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān. Sanātana Dharma Kī. Good evening. This evening we had an Anuṣṭhāna, especially with that Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra. The name, as it is said, Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra, is victory over death. Great victory, Mahā-victory. We have here our friend, Mr. Kapil. Swāmijī is always giving commentary, and today you have commentary from Mr. Kapil. I will translate, and he will give the commentary. So, the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra. This mantra comes from the Vedas, and it is a very powerful mantra. Many people repeat it every day. Our Kapiljī is a learned mantra pūjārī, a man of Karma Khaṇḍ. Karma Khaṇḍ—before noon we had a lecture about karma. All good things, anything you do, you change; it’s action, that’s karma. Karma must not be negative. Everything is karma. Even Bhagavān Rāma also said this. So, let’s listen to what our dear friend Kapil is saying. Adoration at the Gurudev’s holy feet. What I can explain about the mantras in front of Gurudev? But still, it’s an order from Gurudev. So, through my words, I will explain something about the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra. As Gurujī told about the mahāmṛtyuñjaya-mantra and what He explained in it, there are certain ṛṣis whose names He mentioned. Among them is Ṛṣi Mārkaṇḍeya, and on his name is written the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa. Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi was a very young man. In his destiny, the lifeline was very short. So his mother and his guru told Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi, "If you will worship Bholenāth, then your life will be long." When Mārkaṇḍa Ṛṣi was still very young, on his palm there was a line which was a very short lifeline. So his mother, his master, etc., they asked him to recite the mantra, the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya mantra, so that his life would be prolonged. It was only twelve years; life was in his destiny. According to the constellations and all, Jyotiṣa, etc., his life was predicted to be about twelve years. From the age of six, he performed the ārādhanā, the tapasyā, to understand Bhagavān Śiva. So his master told him that he should recite this mantra, and definitely Bholenāth Śiva would prolong his life. It is said: Kāla. Kāla means the date. Kāla means the time. Kāla means the past time. So, in which subject do we use this word Kāla? So Kāla is death, and Kāla is definitely fixed for everyone. No one can change the time constellation of your death. Even Brahmā and Viṣṇu cannot save that life from that death. But only that Bholenāth Bhagavān Śiva, He can change. There was a time that the date, or the day, was coming closer and closer—the days of who? Martand. So death came and stood in front of Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi. Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi was worshiping the Śiva Liṅga by hugging it. So the Bhūta, he went to the Śiva temple, and he embraced the Śiva Liṅga and continued chanting. Śaṅkar Bhagavān kī jai. In the same way, in front of Kāla, Lord Bholenāth Aśutoṣa appeared from inside that Śiva Liṅga. He said to Kāla, "You cannot take this ṛṣi." So Kāla, in front of Bholenāth... when the time came for Mārkaṇḍe Ṛṣi, the death came. So merciful Bhagavān Śiva manifested from the Śiva Liṅgam and told that Kāla, that death, "You cannot kill him. You can’t take him." So Kāla made praṇām to Śiva and, with folded hands, said, "Lord, as your wish." So only Śivjī can do what no one can do. And so, Mārtaṇḍa Ṛṣi wrote the Mārtaṇḍa Purāṇa, and there he also wrote many things about Divine Mother Śakti, etc. In this way, if you chant the mantra of Mahāmṛtyuñjaya to Lord Mahāmṛtyuñjaya every day, then definitely in your life there will be no sorrow, poverty, or death. This is definitely proven in the scriptures. Because Lord Mārkaṇḍeya is such a sage who was a saccirāñjī, on whom there was never any effect of any era. And so it is that they are living still. All that he said—the names Martanda Hanumanjī, Pasuramjī, etc.—they are in this world in the form of astral body or causal śarīra; they are still there. Definitely, they will help us when we repeat their name. In short, I would like to say that you should know that the mantra which you repeat, which is given by your master, your guru—while repeating that mantra, no other mantras can be successful. Because that happens, that is what is called a seed in all mantras, the life in all mantras. Your guru mantra becomes a seed in those other mantras. Mantras, the words of the great saints, the tapasyās, the austerities of the great ṛṣis or masters—it is the reality; it is the science. Everything can fail, but that will not fail. Therefore, it is said: every word can fail, but Guruvākyā will never fail. That’s it. So that is the science, that’s yogic science. That’s called the power of yoga: yoga, agni, karma, dākdanī. So that sādhanā, that tapasyā, that our anuṣṭhāna can burn all the karmas away and we get liberation. Maharishi Martand... About 70, 80 years or a little more, one photographer from England had a hobby to make photos or pictures of the Himalaya and different mountains. So he was traveling through the Himalayas and took photos. At that time, there was a reel, and then it had to be developed afterwards. And it was only black and white photos. The most beautiful photo is the black and white, and long life. As long as that paper exists, the photo will exist. Now, this color is chamak-damak, and this is not a real one. It’s called nakhara. Nakhara means it’s not real. So you have your own face, beautiful, that will last your whole life. But when you make up something, that will last only till evening. That’s it. And sometimes they put so much makeup. These poor girls or poor ladies, they don’t dare to cry, and when they cry, it’s terrible, because the make-up thing is at home, and they go in the toilet and look at your gourd, because the real gold and unreal gold have a different light. Anyhow, so that photographer went to his country and he developed the photos. And then he was looking. "I was making photos of the rocks, caves, glaciers, and snow. There was no creature there, except maybe some big birds." What does he see on the glaciers? Sitting, a figure of a human, beautiful, in this mudrā. And only you see the skin and bones, that’s all, a little flesh. "You can count every rib." Then he came back and he searched this photo, this film, where he was, and he went again there. And he was making many, many photos in every light, but didn’t find it. So, from where does it appear in my camera? So he was researching, researching, asking. Then one old man from the Himalayas said, "This is the place of the Martandṛṣi’s tapasyā." Martin Ṛṣi, Martin means that he has victory over death. And he is still sitting there. A few years ago, I was in Delhi. And the Vice President of India invited me. So I was there in his residence. And there on the wall, beautiful, this photo was there, a picture, black and white. All the time I was looking at that, then I asked the president, "From whom is this picture?" So he said he cannot say for sure, but the story of this picture is that what I told you. And who was the Martin Ṛṣi? Is that what our Panditjī said? Acharya, he said, "So there was one Ṛṣi, and that Ṛṣi, they were married." Why not? You should marry and have good children, like Martin Ṛṣi. But it’s both sides. Faithful husband and faithful wife, but we are now in a storm, a big storm, the big storm. So the seed fell from this field into that field, and from this field into the other field. All seeds are mixed. That time was not; they were not marrying because of, let’s say, physical love, but to get liberation. And then if you create or get a child with so many pūjās and worships to get a divine soul, and then give such education. So one ṛṣi, he was very old, maybe some thousand years or hundred years—next time I will look at his horoscope. So he was very sad, and then it happened: the ṛṣi Nārada came. Nārada Ṛṣi said to this Ṛṣi, "Why are you so sad?" So he said, "Well, I want to have one son. I have no child." He said, "Well, you will get it." Well, he said, "I’m so sad, I don’t have a child." So Nārada said, "Bhagavān Śiva will give you, bless you." And he got a son, so happy. So happy, he became more young. So those who are always happy remain young. Yes. Be happy. That’s it. So when you are happy, you are dīvānā. Dīvānā means high. You said, "Oh, you are very high today." Then you become young. Don’t cry that, "I want to marry." Oh God, who is the unlucky person crying for a marriage? A marriage will run behind you. You run away, that’s it. So don’t cry for this. Don’t go to Paṇḍitjī, "Can you make pūjā that I get to marry?" What will you marry? Nothing. You marry trouble. You are going to marry the troubles. Forget it. Enjoy. Enjoy life. Be happy. Yes, don’t get in trouble. Don’t get in the storm, in the cyclone. What comes will come, my God. I would not cry for marriage. I cry for liberation. I cry for that knowledge, that mokṣa. And I cry for that, to make all happy. That’s it. We are all in the lower lokas, in lower chakras. We are between animals and human chakras. We are leading paśu saṁskṛta, animal culture. Deva saṁskṛta, that is ṛṣis. And that’s why one ṛṣi has ten, ten, twenty, twenty women. Because they’re always running behind. And they were running from one mountain to the other mountain. And the poor ladies, they couldn’t swim through the Gaṅgās and Yamunās. So give up, don’t cry. And if it goes away, you say, "Thank you, the problem is gone." Oh God, those are great śaktis, great women. You know, if you touch them, you will burn. So powerful women were. If you touch it, it’s like an electric shock, yes. That’s it. There’s a big story I can tell you next day. So that ṛṣi got a son. He was so happy, and then after one year, Nārada came. Nārada said, "Ṛṣi, you look so happy." He said, "Yes, Nārada. I have one son. I’m so happy." He said, "Bless you. Congratulations. All the best, and wish you all good luck." Nārada went because Nārada could not stop for more than a few minutes or seconds. But Martin Ṛṣi’s father was the best astrologer. And then he took the Jyotiṣ: only seven years of life. Maximum, with the medicine and this and that, about 12 years. He will die. Again, Nārada Ṛṣi comes when he was a five-year-old boy. The ṛṣi was so sad. He was so sad. Nārada said, "Why are you so sad? You were very sad, and then you were happy, and now you are more unhappy." He said, "I was unhappy, but not that much. Now I am broken. Why? My son has only 7 years. If I live more than 12 years, he will die. Why did he give me God, the son?" He said, "Because you were crying for that." And why then does he take away? Because he just wants to make you happy for some time. "Nārada, please give me some technique, some advice, help me." Nārada, go through the whole universe, ask Viṣṇu, Śiva, this, that, all. Nārada went through the whole universe, all lokas, Caturdaśa lokas. Seven lokas below and seven lokas above. No, there’s nothing. Only one. "Teach your child always to chant Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra and touch the feet of everyone. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small child, a big child, men, women, anyone. Touch their feet, and at that time, what will everyone say to you? 'Chiranjīv ho.' Live long. Live long, live long, live long. Bless you. Bless you, live long." Blessing is a great power. You should always bless your child, bless your child, bless your wife, bless your husband, bless everyone. Don’t bless your master, because the master will bless you anyhow. "And the last date, your child should spend the time in Śiva Mandir, and always near the Śiva Liṅgam." The day of death came. Mahā Kāla, Kāla came. Kāla is the death, riding a buffalo, sitting on it, a mighty, strong man. He wanted to take away that boy. But death, ghosts, and fear will never appear in a Śiva temple. And where is Śiva? Now, the child saw that death was standing outside of the temple. So he hugged the Śiva Liṅgam, and he put his head on the Śiva Liṅgam, looking with one eye at Death. And Death tells him, "Come." He said, "I will not come." Death is sweating, Kāla is sweating, because he will be punished by that Mahākāla. Yamarāj, but he didn’t come. Finally, he went to Yamarāja, the king of death, and he said, "I will go and take him." So, but he can’t go in the Śiva temple; he is sitting on the buffalo, and the buffalo is always making like this, "This boy will not come." Finally, Śiva appears and tells him, "Now, Mahākāla, it is your death. Give him life." Chiranjīvho. Chiranjīvho means live forever. That’s it. And the Yamarāj went away. Śiva blessed him. So that is called Martandṛṣi. So, who was the victory over the victory of death? And so, is that Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra? "Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya... Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Hara Hara Gaṅgī Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya... Oṁ Hara Hara Gaṅgī Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Alak Purījī Mahādev, Dev Purī Śrī Mahādev, Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān, Satyasanātan Bhāratī Jai."
