The Power of Mantra and the Significance of Śarad Pūrṇimā

A satsang on the power of mantra and the significance of Śarad Pūrṇimā.

"The Gāyatrī Mantra is the mantra which purifies the atmosphere, the energy in our body, in our mind, in our thinking, in our whole family."

"Today, the moonlight, this moonlight, is very, very special because today, in this full moon, is radiating the energy of immortality."

A spiritual teacher leads a gathering, explaining the purifying power of the ancient Gāyatrī Mantra and its benefits for the individual's five bodies and environment. He then elaborates on the special astrological and spiritual significance of Śarad Pūrṇimā, describing the traditional practice of preparing milk rice charged by the moon's nectarous rays. The talk also honors the divine feminine, the guru principle, and Guruji's sannyāsa initiation anniversary, concluding with a group chanting of the Gāyatrī Mantra.

We are going to sing a mantra. We all know what a mantra means: to create a beautiful atmosphere, to create peace. Three days ago was the International Day of Non-Violence declared by the United Nations in honor of Mahātmā Gandhījī's birthday—non-violence, ahiṃsā. Secondly, the mantra cleanses our own energy from our body and also the atmosphere and environment where we are. A mantra is a word. Every word has a meaning. For example, when we say to someone, "Please, can you help me?" This word helps. But first, "please." This is such a wonderful word. Who doesn't want to help? But still, one says, "Okay, I'll do it." Or, you say, "You fool, can you help me?" This is a word that will not lead us anywhere. In which direction? And so, mantra. One mantra comes from the Vedas, and when you translate it, it has a great meaning. You can explain this mantra for months, speak about this mantra, or hold a lecture. There are many commentaries on the Gāyatrī Mantra, and the Gāyatrī Mantra is very, very, very old, thousands of years old. It does not go in a specific direction of one religion, belief, or culture. It is about faith, religion, culture, but it is a force, an energy, a harmony that it brings into the whole of our existence, into the environment, into the whole atmosphere. Every day, when everyone repeats this Gāyatrī Mantra at least five times, it brings a lot. After a year, when we do it every day, we will see how, in our family environment, in family harmony, even our health will be much better. It affects the inner body because it affects our psyche and our thoughts. And because of this, all our five bodies—the Annamaya Kośa (the body of food), Prāṇamaya, Manomaya, Vijñānamaya, and Ānandamaya Kośas. That means we have five kapās; it is like a cave. One is our food kapha, the second is energy, the third is our mind, then our intellect, and the last is the body which works in our being. And so, the five bodies repeat the Gāyatrī Mantra five times, spiritually or loudly. We will repeat the Gāyatrī Mantra. Every one of us knows what the Gāyatrī Mantra is. Everyone knows it by heart. Who can't? Just listen. And who doesn't want to listen, then think of something else? Yes, nothing is necessary. Okay? So the Gāyatrī Mantra is the mantra which purifies the atmosphere, the energy in our body, in our mind, in our thinking, in our whole family, our neighbors, etc. The Gāyatrī Mantra is one of the oldest mantras coming from the Vedas. People give commentary on the Gāyatrī Mantra sometimes for years and years. So when one is talking, and I have a lot of knowledge, then from a little, little seed, one can make Viśvakarmā in German from an elephant, okay? So the knowledge is, when one begins to speak, then it flows and flows and flows. So let's begin today with our Gāyatrī Mantra. Today is a very special day, a very, very special day. And there is something with this special day. I would like to ask you something. Then it will be better this day. Start the ventilation. And this side, open it. Thank you. Now it will be more beautiful. So we have, okay, our number two. Two is good. Our lawn is long by the lake. So today is that day. It's called the full moon day. We have every year twelve full moon days, but according to astrology, every third year, sorry, is the thirteen full moons. And that thirteen full moons means, in astrology, it will be counted that there are thirteen months in February. We are counting always 28, but after three years is 29. So on the fourth day, for four years... So some people, they are very unhappy because their birthday is every fourth year. No, no... Birthday is all, is a good life is long for them, you know? This is it, it's only one birthday. So four years is for me, it's only one year, okay? This full moon is called Śarad Pūrṇimā. Śarad is called like entering the winter, or entering into the summer in Australia, in New Zealand, in Fiji, and in these parts, it is called their summer begins. And for us, in this part of the world, the winter, Śarad Pūrṇimā, only this one full moon in all twelve full moons. Today, the moonlight, this moonlight, is very, very special because today, in this full moon, is radiating the energy of immortality. There are twelve; out of these twelve, this is the one. The other eleven also have a speciality, everything, but today is immortality. Now, according to this philosophy of astrology, there are two: there is moon astrology and sun astrology. In the West, here in this country, it is the sun astrology, and the rest, but the most accurate is the moon. And so, according to the moon horoscope, they are doing today. They cook today; it's called milk rice. Milk is the first nourishment. We all were born as a complete body; it doesn't matter if cow or buffaloes or tigers or the cat—all those who are born so, mother's body developed, and then they are born. Other is like eggs. The third is the bark, the sprouts. Fourth is like bacteria. So these are the four ways how the jīva, the life, develops or comes in this world. So that is. Furthermore, I will not go in that way. So milk, milk is life, and that milk only the mother can give. There are different kinds of milk. There are four different milks, and that is a big question for people to answer, but I don't want to put you in the complications, okay? But there are four milks. One milk is from maikā, meaning mother's milk, our human mother's milk. Second, the mother of the cow, it means all animals' milk: tigers, lions, buffaloes, elephants, cows, etc. So one milk is mother, second is the cow, it means all animals. And third, milk is the milk of the vegetation. Yes, vegetation. We have coconut milk. In many trees, when we break the leaf, milk comes out. So, vegetation. So, one milk, maikā, dujā gaikā, tujā bandraikā. Okay? So, mother, khāu, and vegetation. Now, answer to me, which is the fourth milk? I will not tell you today, next year on this, okay? So, there are four different milks, anyhow. So, the milk is our nourishment, milk is our life, milk is pure, and milk is coming out of the mother's love. The father is father also. Equal mother and father, but father cannot give the milk to the child, only mother. And if you kill mother or cut mother's body, there is no milk that will come, you see. That is a mother. We have to understand what mother is, and therefore it is said first in the Upaniṣad: "Mātṛdevo bhava." It is a Sanskrit word, "mātṛ." It is also in many, many languages, the same thing: maikā, mother. Everything is so, "Mātṛdevo bhava." First, in all gods except Gaṇeśajī, all... we can also tell Gaṇeśajī is included in this. The first god is the mother. Respect your mother. Don't say harsh, bad, or angry words to your mother. You don't know what the nine months were for your mother. She was very happy, but it was not pleasant days. Though not pleasant, she was happy. And thanks to mother. She may not know, but how the nature, or God's engineers, or however it is, how in the womb of the mother, who was making all these things—the kidneys, the livers, the hearts, the intestines—the muscles, the nerves, the brain, eyes, the ears. You know, eyes cannot hear, and ears cannot see. The mouth can speak but cannot see. So all this, it is a miracle. And this miracle suddenly comes out as a so beautiful child, girl or boy. Boy, it doesn't matter. So that one, this one, you can say this is... is not a proper word to use. It that what, what kind of minds mean? What kind of minds? Minds, there's only white marble stone comes, or gold comes, silver comes, iron comes. Coal comes, and so what? A nature divine, that mother, in her body you were developed. Everything you got, and God, when He gave the eyes, exactly measured, you know? It's not that one eye is here, another eye is there, when one eye is here. And one is here, then doctors will now try to make an operation and bring here exactly accurate, perfect balance, everything, heartbeat. This, this... So, as much as we can put the glory of the mother, we cannot, we cannot finish the whole writing and writing. Glories, glories. We don't have those words, and in that case, in that mind, that child doesn't respect the mother. Or this is the sin, but the mother will never say it. Even if the child is not... even this, the mother will forgive. The mother has... That heart, because we said the blood is thicker than the water. Blood is thicker than the water, so the mother, she gave her blood, her energy, that you are growing and you become so beautiful and came out with everything, healthy, good child. If the child was not healthy, that was not the mother's mistake. It's a destiny and the mistake of that food, and what now we call all these pesticides and this and that. And so this milk, that milk, how mother is producing in her breast, also animals, the cow, the buffalo, the cat, the pig, every mother, every mother. The mother doesn't make these differences, that this is animals and this is humans and this. No, the milk is always white. And in everyone, the blood is red. If you make differences, look to the blood; it is the same color. And similarly, so when a mother is pregnant and she chants the Gāyatrī mantra, you will see how healthy, how good, how intelligent, and how humble a good child will be born. So, the milk; second is the rice. So rice, what we eat, is one of the most ancient grains, a very ancient grain. So, milk and rice. So today on this moon night, which is called Śarad Pūrṇimā, one cooks milk rice. One liter of milk, for example, okay? You can cook only 100 grams; it's your interest. But let's say, one liter of milk. In one liter of milk, you put one tablespoon of rice. This is the ratio: not one liter of milk and half, but one kilo of rice. That is okay. It is also okay to eat. But we have to make that, and then you cook the milk or boil the milk. But in the beginning, it was very hot, and then the temperature became less. But also, it doesn't go down. And you clean the rice, put it in the water, and observe that the rice is going down, not fluttering in the water. When the rice is fluttering, then be sure because it's plastic rice. Yes, nowadays they are making plastic rice, you know that? Yeah? So clean the rice nicely, and then put it in the milk. One liter milk and a good tablespoon of rice, put a few seeds of the... called the soup? No, no... Cardamom, and then boil, cook it. Sometimes some people put the saffron, little, but must not be. Mother's milk is white, you make it orange? That's not orange, okay? So let the saffron on one side, okay? So, till... This one liter of milk becomes half a liter. The rice is also nicely cooked and becomes one. Then, according to your taste, you put sugar inside and leave it there to cool. Then, if you don't have too many mosquitoes or some cats... Outside, otherwise, with a glass lid, cover it and put it tonight outside somewhere where direct moonlight is coming. Yes, it is a science. It's not a joke. Don't think Swāmījī is making us do something, yeah? Drink tomorrow. You will go home. And do it, it's still not too late, of course. If you have milk, otherwise, from where can we get the milk now? The tank is there. Now, the tank is there. Is there a Benzene? Anyhow, we should have a shop which is open 24 hours for emergency. Okay, then leave it whole night, and if there is a cloud or no clouds, the moonlight cannot be hidden. There are some people who, on a full moon day, are nervous, can't sleep, or something. The cats, the wolves on a full moon night, you know, so on our earth, on the full moon day, this radiance... Which is here is a very, very powerful, so this moon radiance, and if it's moon shining and going, of course, very nice. So now, in this rice and milk and the sweet is because our tongue now, this moonlight is attracting to the. Moon to the rice and milk, it turns this moonlight as a nectar, good for our health, for everything. This, this, that, so that's very, very important, very good. So, this is today called Śarad Pūrṇimā. Second, today is Thursday, so according to the horoscope... Today is Jupiter. Jupiter is Thursday, and Jupiter is a guru. Jupiter is a master, and so this constellation, when the full moon and Jupiter, this is known as Guru Pūrṇimā. We spoke many times about Guru Pūrṇimā, and our Jupiter, your Jupiter, must be very powerful. Then no other planets can attack you if your Jupiter is strong, and your Jupiter is here on the index finger. Where this is your thumb, this is the index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and what is this? A... small finger, so the Jupiter is here. This is a guru here. So when you show your palm, you should have your this here higher, high point. Look, everybody, girls and boys, you have nothing will happen wrong. Just look at it on your right hand and left hand, both this point, index fingers point, this is a very... Some people have lace whose astrology they always, they try to make their fingers like this, that one day it will be, but it doesn't go. It has to be given by your mother. So if it is not that, then you must go to the mother and say, "Mother, please, why is it like that?" So mother says, "My child, but you have another Jupiter that is more powerful." So this is that here. So this is Jupiter and full moon constellation. There is also like a very spiritual radiance, very spiritual radiance on this night, if you understand or not, if you believe or not, doesn't matter. It has effect on the same thing. When there is a very hot sun, it doesn't matter if you don't believe or not, it is a hot sun. But of course, you can go to air conditioning, or you can jump in cold water or take an umbrella, etc., but it is the Sun, the heart, to raise it. So this is the second. Third, on this very auspicious constellation, our Mahāprabhujī, Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī, gave the sannyāsa initiation, sannyāsa dīkṣā, to our holy Gurujī. So today Gurujī got the sannyāsa dīkṣā from Mahāprabhujī. So for us, it is two or three special days, and then very soon comes Pūrṇimā. This is Pūrṇimā, then coming the Dīvālī. And on Diwali, that is another very big festival. This is more on the victory of the good things and the failure of the negative energies. Aśurī Śakti and Devī Śakti, so it is God Rāma who killed and destroyed Rāvaṇa, the Rākṣasa, and he came after 14 years, spending his time in the forest. He promised his mother that he would come back, so Dīvālī's day is the day when God Rāma comes at home, that night is called the Lakṣmī Pūjā. Lakṣmī, now it is said, first I told you, is God first mother, or God is the mother, "Mātṛdevo bhava." Then the first is the feminine, and then the masculine, so we said Sītā Rāma. We don't say "Rāma Sītā, Sītā Rāma." We say "Bhagavān Viṣṇu and Lakṣmī." We don't say "Nārāyaṇa Lakṣmī," but we say "Lakṣmī Nārāyaṇa." So these are the divine energies you can see, but the first is that mother, the goddess, Lakṣmī. Lakṣmī means many, many... Generally, we all understand Lakṣmī as prosperity. Lakṣmī means wealth, or, in normal language, money. Lakṣmī is money, penis. So Lakṣmī means the money. Lakṣmī means the wealth, prosperity, health, purity, clarity, protection. Many, many things is the Lakṣmī. And on this day, the light comes as this flame. The light is Lakṣmī. And according to Gauḍīya, in India, it was the financial year. So that's also different, different things that it doesn't matter; these are worldly things. So the Pūrṇimā is now Śarat Pūrṇimā. Before Śarad Pūrṇimā came, it was nine nights of the Divine Mothers, nine nights of worship. Four times a year, the Divine Mothers are worshiped. Yes, unfortunately, we in this Kali Yuga, in this dark time, we have lost respect towards mothers or women, and towards men too. It has become before it is called the Dev Sanskriti, the culture of the goddess, and now becomes slowly, slowly the animal culture, the behaviors, etc., etc. But still, there are people who follow this from the Vedic science about these nine nights. These nine nights finished, then comes the destroying of that Rākṣasa, and then comes the day, and it is coming to this Pūrṇimā, Dīvālī. Diwali Purnima because the Sarasvatī was that, and we, and after the Sarasvatī, the nine nights, there was a Durgā Pūjā, then comes this Sarasvatī, and then comes the Pūrṇimā, and then comes to the Diwali, so these are the whole months where people are really very careful and very spiritual. There are many, many houses, complete families, they are very spiritual. And lucky are they that their children follow the steps of the parents or their ancestors, because there is a lot of the energy of the ancestors which is working in our house, and that is going through the Navarātri, the nine nights of the Divine Mothers, and this is something very, very important for humans to follow. These principles are from the cosmic energy, and so comes the Diwali. The 19th of October is the Diwali, and on this day, I think it is Thursday, and you should have here on Thursday Diwali Pūjā. You can have your Kriya practice at home. Sorry, I have to spread my leg here. You should come, and many of you know how to worship during Diwali. Mostly, we are enjoying eating, that's all. Every festival, Christmas, what are we doing? A little bit, then singing one song. And then, come on, we are eating, and there's so... everything is... why not? It is a joy of our life, eating and this and that, everything. So this Diwali, we always celebrate here in our ashram, and you are all are welcome and should come and sing the bhajans, and many of you will speak about Dīvālī. I will send a message or with the Skype, so you should have the message that you can listen to. So, this is for today. I wish you all the best. And I congratulate our holy Gurujīs for that. He became the monk, the sannyāsī. He successfully, he was divine. He got all that one can get through the spiritual way, Brahma Jñāna. And now he is giving us the blessings when we remember. When we see him, when we read and sing his songs which he wrote, it gives us immense and immense energy. So we got to lead our Gurudev, we adore him. We honor our spiritual lineage, which is very pure, very clean. You are free. If you want to do, if you don't want to do, it is your things. I am very happy that you came. Welcome and bless you on name of this. Now we have to chant the, otherwise you will say, "Now he told we will chant," and when you've forgotten to chant. Oṁ... Oṁ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ, tat savitur vareṇyaṁ, bhargo devasya dhīmahi, dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt. Oṁ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ, tat savitur vareṇyaṁ, bhargo devasya dhīmahi, dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt. Oṁ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ, tat savitur vareṇyaṁ, bhargo devasya dhīmahi, dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt. Oṁ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ, tat savitur vareṇyaṁ, bhargo devasya dhīmahi, dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt. Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān.
