Meditation with Vishwaguruji from "Yoga for Wellness" Conference, India

The practice of yoga and meditation brings relaxation that extends from the individual to the entire world. A relaxed self with good breath and peace of mind is the science of yoga. This state affects the family, neighbors, nation, and world. The process involves calming and silencing the mind. Dhyāna focuses on a single thought to gradually reach a state of happiness. Transformation begins by changing habits, adhering to principles like non-violence and avoiding intoxicants. This foundation builds the yoga way of life for many.

"Swāmījī, can it happen that I practice yoga and my husband and my dog become very relaxed?"

"First, change your habit."

Filming locations: Vienna, Austria.

Dear sisters and brothers, good afternoon. The last two or three lectures were very scientific and, for me, very knowledgeable. I have been traveling in Western countries since 1970. In 1972 in Vienna, an American lady from the U.S. Embassy came to my class. After attending for a few days, she asked me, "Swāmījī, can it happen that I practice yoga and my husband and my dog become very relaxed?" You know all the answers. That is yoga: when our self becomes relaxed, with good breath and peace of mind. That is the science of yoga and its effect, not only on our self but on the whole family, our neighbors, the whole nation, and the whole world. I have many, many such experiences, but I was thinking I would like to give you a few minutes of meditation, if you accept. Please, thank you. So, make yourself sit straight, if it is possible. If you don’t mind, take off your shoes, because the energy flows more now from the ground through the foot soles. Be comfortable. Chin Mudrā, Trigunas, Jīva and Īśvara. Whatever you want to see, do it now. After some minutes, there will be nothing new to see. Therefore, keep your eyes closed. Relax the whole body from the toes to the top of the head, and from the top of the head to the toes. Relax your elbows. Relax your stomach muscles. Just relax the stomach muscles. Withdraw thyself from the external world and be here in this hall. Deep inhale through the abdomen and exhale. Deep inhale, exhale, and deep inhale, and we all chant OM three times. Inhale. Mṛtyormā mṛtaṁ gamaya. Oṁ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ... Rub your palms, place your hands on your face, open your eyes, and gently massage your face. Thank you very much, Swāmījī. That was very, very appropriate, because after the theory, we must have practice. Theory and practice go nicely, and you have brought forth the dimensions of practice. Yoga is to calm down the mind, to silence the mind. And the process of dhyāna is to go into a single thought. That single thought was able to take us slowly, gradually, systematically to that wonderful state and lead us to the state of happiness of Ānandamaya Kośa. It is his speciality that he has inspired a large number of people to start off with the Yama and Niyama among his disciples. First, they have to change their habits, as rightly pointed out by Hamsajī. When his disciples come to learn yoga, he says, "First, change your habit." You know, no non-veg, he starts off, and no alcohol, no smoking. And come back after practicing for one month. Gradually, he builds them up towards the yoga way of life, and he is remarkable. Thousands and thousands of people in his area, in the surrounding areas, he has been able to transform them and then introduce these dimensions. Therefore, it is such a great pleasure to have Swāmījī for your presence here, and rightly so. You brought out this meditation aspect so aptly.
