Yoga for Well-being

A spiritual talk on wellness, memory, and yogic lifestyle.

"Yoga is the best remedy to relax and rid oneself of this stress. People say they are 'burned out.' Yes, you burned, but you did not become ash; you remained as coal."

"The best wellness is in your house. And you know when your wellness begins in your house? When husband and wife come home, they are so friendly and relaxed, helping each other."

The speaker offers a comprehensive guide to restoring memory and calm, framing modern wellness within yogic science. He prescribes specific techniques like acupressure points and Vajrāsana, dietary remedies like soaked almonds with honey and milk, and lifestyle principles (āhār, vihār, vicār). The talk connects stress relief, sattvic living, positive thinking, and harmonious domestic life as the true path to wellness.

We were discussing the anti-stress technique. When stress appears, many of our good qualities are deleted from memory. What remains on the surface is an unpleasant temperament, akin to what we call depression, along with negative thoughts towards oneself. Such stress often appears in what we term a workaholic. Yoga is the best remedy to relax and rid oneself of this stress. People say they are "burned out." Yes, you burned, but you did not become ash; you remained as coal. There are precise techniques to release stress and tension and to recall your good qualities of memory once more. We experienced one such exercise just ten minutes ago. The first point is here at the temple. The second point is at the center of the eyebrows. The third point is at the root of the nose. There is another we spoke of but did not practice. The aim is to keep the memory good and to gain sattvic quality—to develop sattvic energy and qualities. An ancient and very nice remedy for this is almonds. There are two kinds. Some almonds are big and thick, but the best almond is thin, small, a little longer, and slender in the middle. Take a handful—what you can hold in your fist—and soak them in water, ideally in a clay pot. In the morning, peel and chew the almonds slowly. Take them with two teaspoons of honey. This will develop your memory and calmness; balance will come, and anger will disappear. Restlessness in children or adults will also calm down. If you like milk, have a cup or a glass of it. After half an hour, you can have your breakfast, or your tea or coffee. It is better to quit black tea and coffee. Your milk should be nice and clean, but you can put a few drops of a color, like coffee, so you think you are drinking coffee. Of course, coffee is not bad, nor is tea, but this is the therapy for memory. As I said, first the negative qualities will come out, and then slowly, slowly it will recall all your beautiful memories. Nowadays, what we call—mostly people say—"wellness." This wellness word is very old, but people are using it much now. Two decades ago, there was no name of wellness in any centers. Wellness is a good word: relax, happy, pleasant feelings. "I feel very well." So they put it as this wellness. It is rooted in yoga. When you practice āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, relaxation, or meditation... Now, people who try to go somewhere to a retreat... So, treat. It was given good quality to you, but now that energy is gone, and you feel full of tension. So we go to retreat, we were treated, but we did not take care of it. So now we should retreat again, going to gain positive energy from relaxation, and that's yoga. In yogic science, there is a nice word I am searching for; it will come. I can't wash... I can't wash. I can't miss on peaceful place somewhere, and "wash" means to stay there, live there for some days or months. So it is said, "Take care of the nourishment." Aha, that is very, very important. You see that vegetarians—90.9%—they have the best memory, especially as they get older. For non-vegetarians, as they get older, their memory goes away. A child who is born, whose parents are from generations of vegetarians, is born with eyes open and bright in one or two days, and the child is very vivid. This is except when the parents have been consuming meat and alcohol, for meat and alcohol also affect the children's brain. So āhār, āhār means nourishment. Liquid food is also food. Therefore, if you can, in the morning, have just a cup of milk. And when you go to sleep, have one cup of milk. It must not be half a liter. You can mix it a little with water if you don't like it, but the milk will do good to calm your nervous system. You will sleep very well, and in the morning also. When we were born, we couldn't sleep, and the mother gave milk, and the child relaxed and slept—already sleeping while drinking milk from the mother. Unfortunately, our cattle, the cows, are nourished with artificial feeders. But we are lucky in Europe, where you can still get good milk from good cows in free meadows and mountains. In Europe, they are really still taking care about dairy things. Well, āhār, then vihār—that's a very important point. Where are you going? Where are you sitting? Where are you talking? It means where you spend your time. That's very important. After sunset, it is time to come back home. It is said that at sunset, every bird returns to its nest. So if you are running in the streets somewhere at midnight and something happens, it is your own mistake. Satsaṅg and Kuśaṅg: Are you in Kuśaṅg, or are you in Satsaṅg? And our behavior—how we behave, how we are to others—as you are to others, so you will also be. If we can have a good attitude, then others will also do the same to us. As wise as you are, you are like a light. In one room there is light, and in another room there is darkness. But when you open the door of the other room, the darkness will disappear, and the light will also be there. So why are we studying in schools, colleges, and universities? To get that knowledge of the light. We should always give the light and not bring the darkness. Ācār and vicār: which kind of thought you have, our thinking—what we are thinking, nobody knows. But we don't know what you are thinking. If you have positive thoughts, you are bringing a good smell, a good fragrance. If one has negative thoughts, then you are like stinky. The inner stink is of those who have negative thinking and are influencing others negatively. And that remains again, like unburned wood; it becomes black coal: ācār, vicār, āhār, and vihār. When in our normal daily life, from time to time we go into ekāntavās—go somewhere to meditate, relax, sleep, walk in nature. But nowadays you go on holiday, and there is so much music and sound. The Adriatic coast is not peaceful anymore in the summer. The Adriatic Coast people are very intelligent. During that restless time, they go on holiday somewhere else and rent out every room. Yes, they are very clever because they live at the Adriatic coast with good air. So, what we call that ekāntavās is nowadays called wellness. In India, there is an organization called Āyush (Yoga, Āyurveda, Therapy, natural therapies, etc.). This year they had a conference on Yoga and Wellness, to introduce that wellness comes from yoga, and why not make wellness for a whole year, a whole round? The best wellness is in your house. And you know when your wellness begins in your house? When husband and wife come home, they are so friendly and relaxed, helping each other. Oh, that is good wellness. The wife is cooking, the husband is cleaning; the wife is ironing, the husband is putting it into the washing machine. Very happy. Children are happy; parents are telling them good stories. Our home is our castle. Wellness at home. Practice yoga in daily life. You need not go anywhere. If you go somewhere, you feel lonely, you come again home. So wellness means feeling good. The sattvic way of life is positive thinking, having merciful thoughts to help others. That's it. So this is about memories, which was the subject, but you did not follow. I told you to sit in Vajrāsana because I wanted to make an experiment. Vajrāsana is connected to the Vajra Nāḍī, which creates immunity in the body and brings wellness to the brain. The Vajra Nāḍī balances the three nāḍīs: Iḍā, Piṅgalā, and Suṣumṇā. The Vajra Nāḍī is like the roots of a tree, supplying nourishment—supplying the nourishment for memory to develop. The third point: try to make a few exercises where we bring our head down. If you cannot make satsaṅg, then you can do what we call satsaṅgāsana, yoga mudrā. The main thing is that we go down so blood circulation goes towards the body. Prāṇāyāma is the best remedy for getting memory. From time to time, walk and get fresh air in a garden, forest, near mountains, along a river. Get some good air. But don't forget honey, milk, and almonds. These three techniques and the points are in order to gain our memory back. Well, time is passing, and we are in a hurry. Are you in a hurry? Are you in a hurry? Then sit in another posture, in Sukhāsana.
