The five elements in the world and in our body

A spiritual discourse exploring yoga, the elements, and devotion through teachings and a parable.

"How to understand God? Of course, we said all the Brahman, but what is that?"

"Yoga means uniting, union... which unites the consciousness and space."

The speaker delivers a wide-ranging talk, beginning with the chanting of Nārāyaṇa. He discusses the nature of Brahman, the human body, and the five living elements (space, air, fire, water, earth) as manifestations of the divine. He defines yoga as the union of consciousness and space, preceding even Śiva. The talk covers the significance of Agni (fire) in various forms, the Vedic science behind marriage rituals and astrology, and concludes with a story about Viṣṇu and Lakṣmī testing a devotee's true loyalty, illustrating the allure of prosperity (Lakṣmī) over pure devotion.

Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa,... Bhajman, Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa, Bhajman, Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa,... Nār, it is said, O my mind, O my soul, O myself, remember God all the time. Nārāyaṇa is the God Viṣṇu. Lakṣmī is prosperity. Lakṣmī is the dear of Viṣṇu, Sūrya Nārāyaṇa. Sūrya, the sun—if one day the sun will not rise, there will be disaster. So we know many, many people do not believe. As the sun is God, but we do believe in Sanātana Dharma. We do believe in the Vedas, Bhagavad-Gītā, we everywhere, everything. How to understand God? Of course, we said all the Brahman, but what is that? Brahman, it means you are ignorance. "Ahaṁ Brahmāsmi." Yes, I am the Brahman, but how? It's very easy to say this, that Brahman is within our body. How many organs do we have in the body? How many glands do we have in the body? How many nerves do we have in the body? How many bones do we have in the body? How many joints do we have in the body? How are our lungs? It is said that our lungs are so thin, very thin, it's just like a fog. And if our lungs are spread, it's more than a football field. What is the length of a football field? That is the length of our lungs. Therefore, whatever we inhale and exhale is received by the lungs expanding and contracting. If we eat something wrong, if we drink something wrong, if we inhale something wrong, we damage our lungs. And when our lungs are damaged, or there is a lot of water inside, the doctor gives an injection and sucks it out. But we have damaged our lungs. Lungs are our life. The heart is our life. The kidney is our life. Our gallbladder is our life. Our intestine is our life. Our brain is our life. Everything is so important for our body, otherwise we cannot live anymore. We don't know what's God. Have we seen a God somewhere? The answer will be only space, and you become a space. So be here and enjoy your life, however you enjoy. What you enjoy after is just nothing, no relation. No one will say, "How are you?" You can't touch anyone. There is no one to be touched, no one is to hear, no one is to this. If you go in that Brahman, Hari Om Tat Sat, do you want to go there like this? Better we come, even it is painful, but our Earth is beautiful. Similarly, the sun, the sunlight, sun energy, and it is that sun, that round the sun, all the planets, they are moving round. Their energy, similarly the sun is like a sun, and all other organs are like the different planets. Now, our earth, our earth is not counted as a planet. There are nine planets, but Earth is not included according to astrology. The astrology calendars do not count Earth as a planet, so Earth is a living being. It is a living being, and in every... corn of the earth, there is life inside. From the stone, coal, what we call in the water, these corals, the water life, and then in the earth. If you see, stand on the earth and they will look with a strong telescope, you will not be able to stand there? How many creatures are there? When you look, stand on the earth. Thousands of thousands, different creatures are there. The whole night, you will not sleep. You will not be able to get up out of your bed. So this is a life, this is our world, but this is for the jīvas to develop, come and go, come and go. So finally, it is Śiva, Bhau, Śiva, then and Viṣṇu, also the Brahmā. Śiva, Viṣṇu, Brahmā, that's it. Śiva is the creator. Swayambhu, who has no mother, no father, but he himself manifested it, so what we call the human body. So it is he who makes our nails and our skin and our toes, you know, not these toes, that in the drawer. So everything, Śiva and Śakti. So in that Brahman, where there is nothing and nothing, only consciousness and space. The space is the first. Consciousness is within the space, not that space is in the consciousness. And that space is symbolizing the body of the mother. Consciousness is the body of my father. Consciousness between the consciousness and the space, what I always tell is yoga. Yoga means uniting, union. Union is like that, that in the milk you put the water, immediately it becomes one. Similarly, yoga is that which unites the consciousness and space. Harmony, balance, and union. These are the three principles of yoga. Therefore, before anything, even before Śiva, yoga is there. What we do here, āsanas, prāṇāyāma, no, no,... This is nothing. It's not that you are doing. Whole day you are sitting. Yes, this is because of this body. So this is a technique. This is a technique for the purification of the body and to know our Self. Who am I? What am I? What is self-realization? First, realize thyself. Who are you? How is your body? How is your mind? How is your anger? How is your greed? How is your this, this, everything? Find out and to live a long time in order to get ātmā-sākṣātkāra. Like Ādi Guru Bhagavaṅ Śaṅkarācārya wrote one book, Aparokṣānubhūti. Aprakṣa-anubhūti. It means self-realization. There, you neglect everything. Yes, I am not the body. I am not the mind. I am not this. I am not this. I am not this. But I am that ātmā. That Ātmā is Paramātmā. But it is Swayambhu, the Śiva, which comes then through the Nāda, Nāda-rūpa-parabrahma. So Śiva himself is Parabrahma. Then Śiva comes, Pārvatī, Viṣṇu, Lakṣmī, Brahmā, Sarasvatī, etc. Both are balanced there, and so it's creating. So, if people are neglecting the five elements in our earth, in our world, in our space, there are five spaces, five elements. And it is living elements. It is living, like we call a living planet. Our earth is a living planet. It is life. So, the space, the water element, water has a life. Without water, we are not here anymore. Earth has life. Fire has a life. If the fire were not there, we would die immediately. When our body temperature goes down, oh God, we take an ambulance and run to the hospital, and the doctors will pump something inside and give the injection and make the warm body. Do we know how our blood is warm and how nicely balanced? If the temperature goes high, what happens? So fever, we are without energy. So who is balancing in the body? That is made by God, all the system, the heartbeat, all other organs, so the fire element, therefore we call in Sanātana Dharma, Agnideva. What? Agnideva. There are different kinds of fire, but have fire. But this fire has gone in different forms. The first fire is in our body, which balances our temperament and temperature in our body. Another body, the Sūrya Nārāyaṇa. The Sūrya Nārāyaṇa is the source of everything, and therefore, do not neglect. Some people said, "We do not believe and worship the gods. Sūrya is not a god." Okay, let this ignorant people, let them, because one day the Sūrya Nārāyaṇa will stand there for five hours in one place, you all will burn. But Sūrya Nārāyaṇa said, "They are children." Yes. Similarly, the water. If the water begins to rise up and rise up, all oceans, we are gone. Or we should quickly ask God, "Please make me as a fish in the water." That Agni, the fire, Fire is in different places, so Jāṭharāgni. Jata Agni, which is in our body, in our nābhi, then it's called the fire where you go to the funeral and burn that body in the funeral. This is also agni. How do you say it? Jalate hai samsaan mein. The word I will find out. Everyone, everywhere, we bow down to that fire where the funeral is. We burn the body, we adore, we make praṇām. Then it is coming, the havanāgni, havan or yajña. When we have yajña, havan, then we give the āhuti, svāhā. Yes, "Om Sūrya Namaḥ Svāhā." Yes, so that Yajña Agni Dev we worship. Then also there is Agni when you marry. In Christianity, they have a church candle, but Agni Dev is there. But in the Sanātana Dharma and Vedic tradition, there is fire, and the marriage is there. It means that you promise in front of the Agni Dev, and seven times you go around. First, the girl goes three times, but they have tied their shawl. Why? Why are they tying this? So, nowadays people don't know anything. They say, "Oh, it may be pull, take her back." No, it's not like that. It is a science in the Vedas. Why? What it means? That's called the gut bandhan. It's called gut, what we call the knot. So the sari of the girl and the shawl of the boy, they tie. Why? The knot is a gland. Now we take this plant, and on this plant, where there is a knot, there will come the branch or the leaves. But between, where there is no knot, there will come no branch and no leaves. But after a certain time, there is again a knot, again a knot, again a knot. So in nature, everywhere... Either a big tree or a small plant, or even the grass. Sometimes in the lectures, there are people talking in English. They are talking: when you have some business, you open a company, yes? You open the company, and you will... oh, in... Opening day, you said, "Please, all help our company. Our company is just from the grass root." What is this? A grassroot project? Did you hear about this grassroot project? What it means? The root of the little grass which is growing on the ground, this root is in the earth, and it will grow and grow, and everywhere there are many branches and leaves and branches, grasses where all is beautiful. You have nice grass in your garden, nice grass, so that's called grass root. So if you work and have a company. Work one day, your company will become very rich. Money will come, everything will come. So, grass root, similarly, now everywhere where the prakṛti, nature, said, there will come a knot. On the knot will come the branch. The leaves, further other branches will have all the knots also, like it's growing and growing like this. Similarly, in our body, there are glands, many, many glands, and these glands are connecting to certain nerves and giving those hormones. Transferring to the further and to the further and to the whole body, we have so many glands. So similarly, this is a symbol, a symbol of tying the two cloth of the male and female. Now they are on that time, that age, that they can marriage, and then they will have a child. If there is no man, a woman alone cannot have a child. And if the man is there but the woman is not there, so it needs both granthis, and there is Agni, Agni Devā. So they promise seven times, the girls going in front, the boy behind, three times, and then the boy takes the front and the wife goes back. So this is a science. There are mantras for them. It is not that tomorrow you would go and make a fire, and you go around holding hands, and then we are married. It cannot be. This is a science, and that family will be happy. There will be no divorce. And before getting married, you should look according to the astrologer now. You should know, or they should tell, the birth of the girl: which day, which month, which year, which month, which day, what time, night or day. There, the science of astrology will tell all the character of that girl. Similarly, they will also read the astrology calendar, or the paṇḍit, or anyone who knows astrology, will also ask the boy's parents, but which year, which month, which day, what time, and what was his or her horoscope? Then again, we'll come together. If there is some kind of constellation that is not suitable for that girl, then this man or the boy will, all the times, will torture that girl, or will not be faithful, or will run away, or there will be something. All the girls have that kind of, so do not marry your daughter or your son without knowing exactly the constellation. That yes, they are the best. They will never be unhappy, they will not fight, they will not divorce, and they will have children, otherwise the astrologer will say, "Yes, the girl is okay, but she will not get a child. This constellation of this man with that woman will not get a child." Okay, so better to clear up everything before, then your whole life you are unhappy. This is very important to know. The astrologers have to be very, very correct. That's a mathematic, it's a counting. So, there are people in the whole world. There are two kinds of astronomy, one astrology. One is called the Sūrya, and one is called the moon, the Western astrology is counting according to the sun, but the accurate, completely hundred percent, is the moon. And that moon is counting every second, every second. So, how do your... Pandit knows if your mother was that time or not, but parents should know exactly, at least one and a half hour. In one and a half hour constellation, you can tell at least that your child was born at that and that time. Nowadays, they are born in the hospital, and they write immediately, so you have this time. But another thing, that now in modern time, the doctor tells you already, on that day will be your child. Yes? And if you will or not, they take there, they give some kind of injection or something, they pull the child out, and Kārī Oṁ Trāsat. But wait, natural birth. So, not that doctor said, on that day it will be a birthday. No, it can be five days earlier, or it can be five or ten days, naturally. Then the constellation is the... Otherwise, if you are clever and you want to have a happy and good life, don't marry emotionally, because marriage means "merge." Merge means... One, that's it. So then it is said, husband and wife are two bodies but one soul. Like the one bird has two wings to fly, and you see how the bird is flying and how nicely the wings are controlled. So Agni, they say, that is on fire at the time of the Yajña, this Agni. Then there is another Agni. That is, we put the fire, making our eating. This is also Agni Dev giving us the food. We bow down to the fire. Then it's called Dāva Agni. Dāva Agni is a fire in the cold. Such a strong cold, so that one day comes such a wind, it burns all the leaves of the trees. Here is not this, but it is certain in Australia, many many times in Dawagni, it is only cold and cold, and such a cold air it burns the leaves of the trees. Then the volcano, that's also Agni Dev, very, very, very. Every Agni, when it is, see, we make the prayers, and like this we go down where this Agni is. With which purpose is there? So every fire is adored, but one not. What you do, you take the cigarette and throw down and put your legs on it. Are you that Agni? Said, "What was my..." Karma, so similarly, in our words, everywhere it is that Agni Dev. Therefore, it is said, Agni Dev. Without Agni Dev, no world creation is there. Similarly, the Vāyu, the air, when there is no air, we can't move. Finished. Yes. And that's why all these five elements, everything is there, but there is no space. So even in our body, in our bones, in our nerves, in our flesh, everywhere is this space. This is ākāśa tattva in us, if our mouth is not empty, finished. So, the doctor has to cut something, maybe. So we can't inhale anymore if the nose is not there. Ear also. So our whole body has ākāśa tattva, emptiness in our body. Otherwise, we can't exhale and inhale. Similarly, we have the earth, the solid part of our body. So, earth, water, fire, air, and space. So this is how we adore ourself. May Mera Nija Aap Hoon. Mahāprabhujī said in one poem. I am that self, ātmā. I am that Tatvamasi, and nirmoya. I have no attachment at all. I pray to myself. I pray, I pray to myself, because that is the ātmā. So when you worship God, you are worshipping thyself, so God is there with you, and God is here with you. Therefore, we should not neglect and say, "This is not this, and this is without this." Your life is not anymore there. So then, what should we do with God? And sometimes God thinks that, okay, my God is enough. But what is with the second? Oh, there is one story. You like to have a story? Yes. One day, Nārada comes, Ṛṣi Nārada. And he comes to Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa. Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa is residing in the ocean. And Lakṣmī is with him. Nārada comes. And Nārada tells that Prabhu, hey Nārāyaṇa, Mṛtuloka, we are as Mṛtuloka, we are here. Prabhu, all your bhaktas, your devotees, are very happy and very good. Well, Nārada went, and Bhagavān Viṣṇu, residing on the Śeṣanāga, is coiled. Viṣṇu Bhagavān is resting like this. Lakṣmī is sitting beside Bhagavān Viṣṇu. Viṣṇu said, "Lakṣmī." She said, "Yes, my Lord." "You see my bhaktas, my bhaktas, they are so devoted to me. They are all my bhaktas." Lakṣmī said, "No, no, my... Lord, they are not your bhaktas, they are my bhaktas." Huh? Bhagavad Gītā, Bhīṣma said, what? Lakṣmījī, what are you saying? She said, "I am saying right. I am Lakshmi. I am Lakshmi." Prosperity, money, this, that. He said, "Yes, I know. I know, Devī." But they are my bhaktas. Then Lakṣmījī said, "OK, we make a test." You go, Anya, this is one of your best bhaktas, a very faithful bhaktā. So you can go and test him. Bhagavān Viṣṇu comes as a sādhu, Swāmījī. And there was a very rich man who had a beautiful shop, two or three beautiful houses, servants, money, and all of this. Money is Lakshmī. So the sādhu came, and that merchant, he was a great bhakta. He was always saying, "Lakshmi Nārāyaṇ, Lakshmi Nārāyaṇ, Śrīman Nārāyaṇ, Śrīman Nārāyaṇ," all the time. Bhagavān Viṣṇu came as a sādhu and said, Bhakta, I want to stay four months during this monsoon time to spend in one place. Will you give me a place? He said, "That is my great luck, my lord." A sadhu came to my house. I will even give my head. Where would you like to remain? He said, "Come, I'll show you the house." Beautiful house, beautiful house, nice room, all facilities. Swamiji said, "Think over. I want to stay now. My āsana here, four months I will not remove from here. I will stay here, or give me any other place. But once I have my āsana, I will not go." He said, "Lord, all five houses are mine. Stay, all we go." Away, he said, "No, no, I don't need so much." Then he said, "Look, once I put my āsana, I will not remove." He said, "I promise you, not four months, but four lives." Swamiji, stay here. Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa... Nārāyaṇa. He meant the āsana. Swāmījī is resting there. The merchant went home and brought some nice fruits, milk, and this and that, and formalities. He was happy. Then he went to his shop, and another sādhu came. Beautiful, nice, long hair, Lakshmi. She is also with an orange dress, sadhu. And Narayan, Narayan, Narayan. She came and went to the shop where the merchant, the businessman, is. Man, she said, the merchant says, "What a great, my luck in my life! I never saw two swamis at once." She said, "I'm very thirsty. Can you bring me a piece of a little water first? Then we will talk." So he went to bring water with a nice glass. He said no, no... I don't use my glass, you know, from you, my own glass. He said, "Okay." She put from her bag, like this, a golden glass, what about 250 gram, one glass. She drank. She said, "A little more water, please." Then he brought the water. He said, "Moment." He threw away the glass in the... He said, "Swāmījī, why are you throwing this?" He said, "What? When I use something once, I don't use it a second time. This is my principle. Give me water." She was saying, "Drink." Again, she threw it and said, "Now bring the milk." He brings the milk. Again, she has a glass of gold. One kilo of gold she has already thrown. He said, "You do thing?" She said, "Anything." When I eat, my plate, golden, beautiful golden plate, I throw it. I don't use it a second time, he said. Oh, the businessman said, oh. She said, well, I'm going now. He said, why don't you stay a little? She said, no, I'm searching for a house for four months. I want to stay in one beautiful place, four months, she said, "Yes." "How many times you eat?" she said, "Four times." "How often do you drink the milk?" "Also four times." Water, of course. My... I have my pot. The bucket is a golden bucket when once I use it then I throw it. Four months, she said, "Yes, quickly, yes or no? I'm going, I have no time." He said, "Moment, moment, come, I show you how my four houses, fifth one is mine, but you can have this also, this one, that one, that one." She said that's why I don't like this house, I don't like this house. And then she came in, and there was sitting Viṣṇu in the sannyāsī. She said, she went out, "This is my choice, but I cannot because here someone other." He said, "Sit and you drink a little milk." I "I will do it. I will do it." So he went and said, "Mahārāj, can I give you a beautiful other house? This is a beautiful..." He said, "Why? No, it's okay, please. But I told you once, when I sit on my āsana, I will be here for four months." He said, "Please, no." Again, he said, "Wait." He went to Lakshmi again. "Lakshmi ji, can I make your house with gold?" She said, "I don't need gold. Gold is under my feet every time. When I take my shoes on my foot a second time, I don't use the same. I throw them away." Again, he went to the Swamiji a third time. She said, "Why don't you give me this room?" She said, "Because there is one sādhu, and he is not like you. He has no siddhis." I'm mistaken. I gave him this house. She said, "Then give it. I don't want it. I go." No, please don't go. I pray to you. Please remain. You are great and great. Again, he went there. He said, "Swamijī, please, can you move to another house?" He said, "No, I will not do, Viṣṇu Bhagavān." Then the person said, "My servant will come and hold your toe, your legs, and pull you out and throw it out." It's not your father's house, okay? Go out from here. He said, "I told you." He said, "Doesn't matter, it's still a few hours." Bhagavān Viṣṇu took his water pot and went. Lakṣmī was sitting in his shop and asking for some fruits. Again, God. In one hour, he throws so many golden pots. He said, "Now that house is clean and free." And she said, "Where is that sādhu?" "Ah, I kicked him out. He's gone." Lakṣmī said, "What? You kicked out the sādhu?" She said, "He said, 'Yes, my Lord.'" "Yes, I'm throwing the gold, that's why. And if someone will come and throw the diamonds, then you will throw me away. Such a person I don't want." Lakṣmījī also went on the same way. When Nārāyaṇa, Viṣṇu Bhagavān, went, they came near the ocean. On a small tapu, a small island like in Fiji, Vishnu Bhagavān sitting there, and Lakṣmījī came, said, "My Lord, forgive me, but I told you, Vishnu, on this earth they are not your bhaktas, they are all my bhaktas." Vishnu Bhagavān said, "Yes, I realize they are all your bhaktas, it means people who are greedy, who want money and money and this and that and good things, they are only praying on the surface to God. That's it. So it's not easy to get that quality, that you don't cheat or you don't catch. You are above everything. So Bhagavān Viṣṇu gave the lecture to Lakṣmī. Please, Lakshmi, don't do such cruel things to me. She said, "Lord, I'm so sorry." But I told you that I will show you whose bhakta this person is, and so it is. So people are all running like this. If one guru gives you something, they say, "Oh, this is a siddha." But what he does, it was nothing. Or some other one gets this, always running here and there, and there is... Nothing. Ariyom. Tat sat. Therefore, best is to do Śrīmān Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa... Śrīmān Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa... Lakṣmī Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa.
