Meditation is the key

A satsang on holistic wellness, yoga philosophy, and sound meditation.

"According to the Vedas and according to spirituality, according to yoga, a name has great meaning."

"Yoga is a science of body, mind, and soul... yoga brings positive thoughts and that good feeling in the body and mind. That means the wellness."

Swami Maheshwarananda leads an evening program, welcoming international guests and disciples. He explores the concept of wellness through the five sheaths (kośas) of existence, discusses the nature of the mind and desire, and emphasizes a regular, scientific yoga practice. The session includes a practical demonstration of how sound and mantra, particularly the chanting of "AUM," can release stress and harmonize the body's energy by working through the chakras.

Good evening, dear sisters and brothers. I welcome you to our Yoga in Daily Life program. I also welcome our respected Dean of the University of Hungary. Welcome, sir. Also, the professor from the University in Hungary, her name is Hem Lata. Thank you for coming. He is doing a very great job, not only in education, but in other ways as well—yoga, vegetarianism, wellness, happiness, and so on. From Budapest after Győr, is someone here from Hungary? It can't be the person I met. He said, "I am Hungarian Jewish." His parents are from there, and he is a very, very nice person. It was actually my talk or interview, a spiritual talk, very nice. As well as our friends, the organizers of Yoga in Daily Life from Alexandria, Washington, or they call it Virginia. So our senior president and the junior president are now coming there. Sir, your name? Nāgarāj. Are you here for the first time? You came for the first time? I see. Welcome, sir. Then, our pillar of Yoga in Daily Life, our Kṛpā Devī. We call her Kṛpā Devī. I don't know her other names. My disciples have Vedic Sanskrit names. So, Kṛpā Devī, do you know what Kṛpā Devī is? How then will you also say, "Can I have a name like this?" Kṛpā means merciful, by the eyes of you. Kṛpā means merciful. Devī means divine. Like in Christianity, some people have their mantra, and that's called this mantra: "Merciful Mother Maria, Merciful Mother Maria, bless me." So this is the same as Kṛpā Devī. According to the Vedas and according to spirituality, according to yoga, a name has great meaning. The name has a great meaning, but the parents will not choose the name, and the child cannot, of course; it is just beginning. Wellness has many different ways. The word wellness is, in long ages, about happiness. Our body, mind, and our soul are in beautiful harmony. There are two main reasons. And there is one called the Vāstu Śāstra. Vāstu Śāstra is how to design our furniture, our bed, our kitchen, our water, our bathroom, toilets, which direction it should be—east, west, north, south, and the four corners more. So that is how the energy is flowing from the cosmos. And that energy is harmonizing first with the sun, the sun ray, which is just going in a cycle, a circle. You don't know, or maybe you know, there is one symbol we call swastika. Many people in Western countries know more; they think about Hitler, and his emblem was his sign on all the soldiers and so on. But that was not because it is his, but it is from Vedic culture, and the symbol, the swastika, is the sun. So it's sunlight-sun energy, and the sun is rotating clockwise. And the sunlight doesn't come directly; it's rotating and coming. So there is a sun, just they are making a cycle. But they modify it slowly, slowly. These are all eight corners of the swastika. It has a great effect on nature. And nature means we are also nature. The creation is one, created. Secondly, the moon. Now, for our wellness, our happiness, our balance of body and mind. And that is, for example, there you see the chakras. You have here all these chakras. You have this book; it's called Hidden Powers in Humans. So in the body, in our body, in every chakra, even a small mosquito has a chakra. It is not a quantity, but a quality. It is very little, but powerful. So we cannot say, we can say, okay, our soul is like this, but the elephant's soul is big. No, the soul is different, very fine. And soul—it will be my next lecture or next program—it's called Eternal Journey of the Soul. So, the soul, our life, everyone, every creature, but life is life, and life will never die. Every creature on this body, including our vegetation, has four bodies. Generally, we say in humans that there are physical, mental, and subtle bodies. But according to this yoga—not spirituality towards religion, but spirituality means purity, crystal clear purity—and that is towards our soul. But that soul is covered by five bodies, like one after the other layer of an onion. So, these five bodies are called five kośas. We call the body of nourishment: annamaya kośa, the body of nourishment. We drink, we eat. And the second is called the prāṇamaya kośa. Our body, we are consuming food and this and that, but whatever we consume in our body should give us energy. And without that energy, our body, we can't get up. And sometimes that energy, through some... Oh, there's God. There are many people here. Didn't they come? So also we welcome them. They're coming from Austria. Very good, thank you. And the president of the whole umbrella of Yoga in Daily Life in the whole world is sitting here. Wow. Thank you, welcome them. Thank you. So, annamaya kośa, prāṇamaya kośa, the energy. Then, manomaya kośa, the body, your mind. Now, you know the mind, yes? Of course, you know the mind. And especially Americans, they are pronouncing always, if something they don't like, "I change my mind." Why didn't you come? Oh, there was this and that. I changed my mind. So I tell them, it's very easy to change your mind. Why don't you change your body also? They say no, that we cannot. So because this mind, you don't know. We use the word mind, but where is the mind? In which part of the body? We can't catch that mind, but the mind is the third body, and mind is like a reflection. And reflection is just like you see in the water, on the water. When water is very peaceful, then you see your face inside. But if you try to gaze at your face there, how can I see my face? There you cannot see. Or your own face, you see in the mirror. Now, this in the mirror reflection is your mind. But still, you can't catch that mind. For example, you look in the mirror, and then you find some spot here or here or something. And what you do is you take a cloth and you clean the mirror. And again, you will be... So we can't catch that mind. But if we go to the reality, and then we are cleaning, the spot goes. So that is, the mind is somewhere, and we cannot catch that. It's a reflection. So mind is a mighty power in our body. And the mind is very fast; its speed is very high. Your mind, my mind, now what is in my mind, and I want to bring this to your mind. And I will tell you how your mind is going with high speed, and if you don't believe, you have to go there to see where your mind is. So we are all sitting, and I will bring your mind there, and you will say, "Yes," and you will say, "Yes," means... Not that I said, and you said, "Yes, okay, Swami." She said, "We will say yes." Don't say yes to that, but I will remind you of something, and your mind is there. Let's say, for example, do you know the moon? Your mind is already there. I just pronounce it, and you are there. So is the speed of the mind. So we cannot control the mind in a certain way. Even we are very divine, of the divine. You cannot control the mind. So the mind, it is said: "man marā na mamatā marī." Here, "mamatā" means the desire, that kind of, "What kind of desire? I want, I want, I want." "Mamatā" in this, "man marā na mamatā marī"—your mind cannot be killed because your desire is still there. So, till the last life breath of our body, it doesn't matter how much we are holy of the holy, we cannot tie our mind. But still, that mind is our principle, our body. Mamatā. Man maran, mamatā marī, mar mar gayā śarīra. So neither mind died, nor desire died. Our body died. And it is very nicely said in Europe, or here also, so that desire we call hope: "I will get, I will get, I will be successful, I will do." This is that. So it is that kind of desire is from the cradle, a walking stick of desire. That desire is a walking stick, the walking stick from the cradle to the grave. So you begin from your diet or your desire from the very little time when you were a little baby in the cradle. Mommy will come, mother will come, will give me milk, then this, and a little cry, and mother thinks, oh, what can I do, and this. But she's hungry, or you feed and feed, but she has stomach problems. So she can't speak; the child cannot act. And mother, of course, she has a feeling only, she doesn't know. Or she has pain in the foot, so therefore we can imagine. So this hope is like a walking stick from the cradle till the grave. Maraṇa mamatā marī, therefore we have to realize and practice. Don't force. Don't suppress. Take it as it is. You are always saying, "Take it as it is." Man marā na mamatā marī, mar mar gayā śarīra. The body died, but the desires did not die. So there are again two desires. Āśā is hope: "I will get it." I will get it. What I want to get, I will get. Āśā tṛṣṇā namarī. Tṛṣṇā is called burning desire. Tṛṣṇā is also thirst, but there is no water. You drive a car on a nice summer day or sunny day, and on the road, about 100 meters far, you see like there is water lying there. But there is no water. But that Pani water reflection is, in reality, the water there that is in the form of a little steam, but it is reflecting there. So we should not touch the mind in that way, but let it be. And so, slowly, slowly, again your mind will come to you, but if... You want to run to the mind, but you can't get it. So, body, nourishment body, energy body, mind body, and then there is the knowledge intellect. Our intellect, God gave one kind of intellect, this quality, this energy, but now everyone has a different one. We are sitting so many here in this room or hall, but everyone has different thoughts, different thinking, different perception of catching something. But we have intellect. Our intellect brings in oneness as wellness, and that means happiness, clarity, to solve the problem. And in that, within our intellect, to get that quality that we want, or that which we want, that's called awareness. And this is what we need now in this world. We shall awaken the awareness in our intellect so that we may create peace in the world. We shall awaken the awareness in our consciousness that now we have taken so many medicines. It helped me, but still not that much. So, I awake awareness in your consciousness, in your intellect. So that I awake in your consciousness, yoga. Yoga is a science of body, mind, and soul. And many times, I myself made the experiment, really. So yoga brings positive thoughts and that good feeling in the body and mind. That means the wellness. I traveled, I don't know how many million kilometers by airplane, of course, and what we call jet lag. There were many times in certain situations where I was tired and I didn't practice, and then I would come to lecture and go here and there, so my... Body, physical body and energy body, both mental body, not my mental body, is in balance of the, what we call, the wellness. Did you ever show me that I'm out of my mind? No, no. So, but this again, where I begin to do my yoga practice, energy and body both are... Balanced, very good. And when I'm not taking, I said, "Okay, I'm tired, and I should sleep." But if sleep is very important, yes, sleep is also, but yoga is yoga. So now, again, two months I'm doing every day, and you can't imagine how nice and how good I feel. And before that, I was very busy with this and that. Again, I gave up practicing. And mostly when I'm in India, I have so many, everyone is pulling me from this side and from that side and from this side and from this side and this side. Yeah, so again, we need, but you people are not traveling every day, so at your home, you should make your time fixed. And the best time is morning, before you go to your breakfast. When you come to your breakfast table, or you take your first chai or coffee in your hand, forget it that you will do any more exercise. Yes? And then you will go, and then you make your coffee, and then come, and then you put your toast and this bread, and then, "Okay, I must eat," and then you take the newspaper, "What is there?" and this. And then everything's gone. So, morning, get up, and in the beginning, it will be a little bit difficult because you are tired and you cannot, and this, but in one week, your body and your mind will be so, so in harmony, and always your body and your mind will say, "Please practice now." A little bit. Practice. So practice, practice. And this is practice. Yoga practice does not need anything except a little three-square-meter or four-square-meter place and one little towel or yoga mat. That's all. Fresh air, that's all. Open your window a little. So, yoga, but we should do the scientific yoga, not that you are twisting your body, putting this knee on this side and this on this side. And if you do, I am sure you will do. You will do it twice, the first time and the last time. Yes. So why should we unnecessarily damage our ligaments, our joints, and our bones? So that is not wellness, but like your yoga and life and sarvahitāsana, believe me, I do every day and enjoy the first step of yoga. Very nice. Very nice. But you have to go to the other step, otherwise Kṛpā Devī will say, "No, go to the second step, third step." So she is a master now, so intellect, knowledge. And then comes the wellness of the body. So, annamaya kośa, prāṇamaya kośa, manomaya kośa, vijñānamaya kośa, and ānandamaya kośa. Ānanda means bliss. So, when you purify all this, then you can attain the state of wellness. And very soon, wellness, you will feel it in two weeks. But very wellness, you can have it after some days, some years, and days. So this is what we are saying. Rādhā, you want a chair? No, there is a beautiful chair. Give Radha a chair, please. Because if someone doesn't feel wellness, then I don't feel wellness. This is this. Okay? Now, second, stress. So there was stress also mentioned. So there is a very simple exercise to get rid of the stress and the tension or depression. Sometimes, some people have depression. So, how to come out of depression? So these are two techniques, very, very good. And suddenly your stress is gone. So stress, and this is in our body, many chakras we were talking about. But the origin, the seed, the center of our life began from our navel. And that's what we call the solar plexus. Is that one? Yeah. And now people are buying these solar panels, yes? So why do they call these solar panels, and why do we call in medicine, or this about our navel, the solar plexus? So our life is on, as sunlight, sun energy. And that is in every creature, even the plants; they also need the solar light. And so, this is our solar plexus here. Now, in our chakra book, there are lotus petals, which we always call. And there are 52 petals in eight chakras, five chakras. And then these five multiply into a thousand. These chakras are along our backbone. On the other hand, there are chakras in the whole body. We are talking about how in our body we have 72,000 nerves, and these nerves are for us. There was a chair for you. Yes, thank you. Anyone want a chair, please? I will finish. Oh, there was a chair, okay. Now can we do one thing? Stretch your legs. Okay, and interlock your fingers and stretch your body. Now we are getting energy from the solar plexus. Bend now your left side and my right side, your left side, your right side. I'm confused with you. Very good. Okay, hands on the thighs. Inhale and hands up. Exhale and bend forward, and hold your toes if you can. Otherwise, your knees are, yeah, and hands up and on the thighs. Now, hands on the floor, legs straight. Now try to raise up your body, if not. All right, then, at least your buttocks up. That was not right. Your body should be straight. Yeah, so try how much you can. Don't go back, just straight sitting. That's all. Hands bring near your thighs, now your hips. Okay, don't bend towards behind while other people are sitting there. So try to come a little, very good, perfect. So, close your eyes, bring your legs together, and sit in Vajrāsana like this. Remain there as you are. Close your eyes. Those who have problems sitting like this, please don't do it if you have issues with your toes, your ankle joints, or your knees. Otherwise, remain like this. Now, let your toes stand while sitting like this, and sit on the heels. Very good. Your toes, your feet, a little apart. Very good. Now, hands sidewards, and lift your knees up, sitting on the toes. That's just, I will. Give you a solar point. Where is that? Okay, good. Knees down, thank you, and sit comfortably again. This was just to make you a little... some energies. Now, each chakra from Mūlādhāra till Ājñā chakra, and each chakra has petals. Each petal has one letter, what we call Devanāgarī letters or Sanskrit letters. And why these Sanskrit letters? Because in those particular letters, there is a particular resonance, sound. And our body is created from the endless universe. Nāda-rūpa-para-brahma. If you want to know the words of God or Brahman or this, it is the sound, the resonance. And that resonance came through this, our body. And all these resonances have different nāda resonances coming on our body, in the body. The body, and on every petal, etc., there are some symbols. So our body is full of that light energy and many, many different things, which we can discuss next time, and so on. So, from this one... Is our navel now? The navel is the seat of the sound. Now hold, touch your hand to your navel, not press, just that you touch, that your stomach there is where your navel is. Now say any one word, so. Do you feel a pressure when you speak? So once again, do consciously. Okay, let's say high. So it is a high. Okay, let's say "Om, Om." Okay, let's say yes. Where was the pressure again? Feel from where the energy is going, from up to down or... From here to up, please again. Yes, and not go away. We are doing, say, "No, did not touch. There was no pressure, no." Yes, why? Good. Everything, so how? These letters which we have, these all letters, other language also. So when the child is... A born child cannot hear anything. Try to give the training to this child so that it will always come to the navel well. So there is an alphabet we begin with, yes, A, B, C, and also we have the alphabet: ah, ah, oh, and this is the oṁ. What happens now when we say "A, A"? Then begins the energy, like some light comes, light explodes from our navel, the Maṇipūra. Then we write double A. So, from the navel, when we open our mouth completely, then the heart center, anāhata, the heart center gets—the whole energy gets wide. And tension, sorrow, anxiety, these things dissolve in the center of the chest, which is connected to the heart. That's called Anāhata Chakra. Have 16 petals. 16? Well, from there, then we bring this resonance to the brain. So, we collect this sound again from the whole body, and we say, "O, O," just, okay, like you, okay? Oh, these are all down chakras; they are motionless. So, we say, "O," into the vocal cord, Viśuddhi cakra, which is touching and healing the problems from this gland, the thyroid. The problems of the thyroid are many, many, not only one. But according to the yogic science, according to this, mostly problems are coming for the thyroid, and this may cause. We swallow many, many things in our stomach. Those difficulties, which we could not solve, the problems, fear. Mostly, the people who are working in some companies with the boss or other people, and nobody will be nice to you like, "My child, how are you?" Or your wife or your husband, and you are working. Your boss will say, "This and this, do this, that." But we don't want this, but unfortunately we need money and we work. So we swallow such a tension in the stomach. And that, what we swallow here, and it remains, but that reflects from here either to the heart, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas, etc., etc. So, through certain meditations and our Aum, all this pressure or stress is here, blocked here. Even the boss is blocked here, yeah. And that boss becomes then what we call a workaholic, yeah. And so everything here is this. So, that's why meditation is the key to bringing again that happiness and wellness. Not only this, you go swimming, and nice, okay, for some time, okay. You go to the sauna, and you stay in the hot air or in the hot steam. And for half an hour, one hour you are there, two hours, and you say, "Ah." But very soon it will go back again. But what we do within, changing into our system, then you are always happy. So, ooh, what shall we say? Ooh, the navel is just sending the only energy. There is no motion; the other side lives in that. Ooh, the resonance is coming directly up to the vocal cords. Ooh, I'm sorry, ooh. So then we send this message. This message we send to the brain. The brain knows everything. But we bring there consciously, the conscious awakening in our brain energy, and that expands, not physically, but expands that volume in energy volume. So all tension is gone, and then it touches the top of the bindu, here, nectar, and then it dissolves. It's called the sahasrāra cakra, the thousand-petaled lotus. It means that energy again vibrates in the whole body. When we say this too, we send energy more out, but the best quality is going towards our brain, and it is said that it brings more circulation towards the brain, and what we call all the nerve systems, they are cleaned. It is said, how should I know? Someone said in Berkeley University they are making the experiment, and they test the sound in two, three techniques of yoga, and that releases the tensions and depressions and many other things. So then, it is: inhale and close your lips. And you should say, "Now, neither here nor in this lower chakras, but it is going, the vibration called brahmari pranayama, like 'M'." So now you touch your head, palm on top of the head, and someone said, "I am." Awakening your kuṇḍalinī, I am awakening your energy. And he said, "Oh, that was very similar, it awakened my energy." It's only your own vibration. So this is a technique, a reality, not something that someone makes, that I give you the energy and power and this. No, it is here. So sit straight and just inhale, close your lips, and only say, "Mmm." Okay. How did you feel? Did you feel vibration in the whole brain? Yes. And that is making us free from the stress. And therefore, akāra, ukāra, makāra. These are three alphabets. Now again, we sit straight, and we will say, "Ah, ah, ah." So, but not making a gap automatically should come. Ah, probably first comes, ah, but, ah, not double. It is a smoothly going sound, and then you are making like opening of petals of the lotus or flowers, and then closing this. So, I will try to say it first. This kind of chanting OM has 100% effect on all these five bodies. And then it comes, what we call after this body, the consciousness. Awakening the awareness when there is no tension. When there is tension, then awareness is suffering. And in this technique, we can also help a lot with memory. So that's all. Again, one hour. So, wish you all the best. Thank you. God bless you. Hari Om.
