The Birthday of Sri Hanumanji

The birthday of Hanumān teaches the power of selfless devotion and the true nature of the soul.

Nutrition supports the physical body, the Annamaya Kośa. Vegetarian food is fundamental for health. Quitting sugar improves digestion and reduces parasites. Speaking sweet words harmonizes everything, while bitter words are poison. Hanumānjī incarnated as the support of Rāma, born thousands of years ago. He was the incarnation of Śiva, possessing immense strength and swiftness. To enter Laṅkā, he became as small as a mouse, slipping under the gate. He searched for a devotee and heard Vibhīṣaṇa chanting Rāma’s name. A true sādhu is defined by humility, not by outward dress. Hanumān tore open his chest to reveal Rāma and Sītā dwelling within. He leaped to the Himalayas to fetch the Sañjīvanī herb, overcoming many obstacles. When shot by Bharata, he declared, “Without fulfilling duty to God, there is no rest.” The herb revived Lakṣmaṇa, demonstrating the power of devotion. Hanumān represents the jīvātmā—your will, strength, and knowledge. Rāma is the Ātmā, the eternal God within the heart. Fear is Rāvaṇa; chanting the Hanumān Chālīsā removes fear and gives protection.

“Bin hari kṛpā mile nahī santah” — Without the grace of God, you cannot find a saint.

“Rāma kāja kī mohe kahāṁ biśrāma” — Without fulfilling my duty to my God, how can I rest?

A doctor told me that when we are heavily addicted to sugar, we have problems with small parasites in the body, which then make us crave sugar. So by quitting, we can control many things in the body much better. This is all I wanted to share. So, from our dictionary, we should delete the word “sweet” — sweet love, sweetness. Speak sweet words. And when we have no sugar in the body, we cannot speak sweetly. Thank you, Dayā. It was very nice. Some people need sugar; others have so much inside that they need an injection to bring it down. One doctor says the brain needs sweets and fat, while another says, “No sweets and no fat.” In everything, there is sweetness. All the grains we eat, making breads and so on, are sweet, but that is limited. So when we are above twenty-five, we are mature; at thirty-five, we are old. Because thirty-five plus thirty-five is seventy, so until thirty-five we can eat some sweets, and until forty, only occasionally. After that, finished. Anyway, thank you — very nice for our health. Today is again a very holy day: the birthday of God Hanumān. Hanumānjī was born 152 years ago — or 55 years ago. Also, God Rāma incarnated is now 155 years old. No, thousands. There is a draft coming from somewhere to my mouth. Thank you for the correction. Listen: it is 100,052 years since the incarnation of God Rāma and Hanumānjī. In reality, Hanumānjī was not like a monkey. It is not the birth of a monkey. But he had such strength, and he is also known as Pavan Sūtra. Pavan means the wind, air — the air principle. So he was swifter than anything. He had many siddhis. He was a great devotee of God Rāma. In some śāstras, it is said that in one yuga, Viṣṇu comes as an incarnation, and Śiva comes to support — as the support for Viṣṇu. So when Viṣṇu came as Rāma, Śiva came as Hanumān. Thus Hanumān or Śiva repeats the mantra of Viṣṇu, and Viṣṇu repeats the name of Śiva. They have equal qualities, but ultimately Śiva is the highest, because Śiva is Svayambhū. Hanumānjī was the incarnation of Śiva, and he was protecting Viṣṇu in every aspect. So he could run, he could jump. His jumping was so quick and strong, like from one shore to the other shore, to Laṅkā. The story is very long, but once Hanumānjī even swallowed the sun. Everywhere was dark and dark. So they pleaded, “Please, please, Hanumānjī, give the sun back, please!” He had that dignity, that power. He will come again. And he is here. Today is Hanumānjī’s Jayantī, his birthday. There is one called Hanumān Chālīsā, and it is very nice. If you know it, we can chant. Who can? Somebody play and sing: “Jai Hanumān Gyān Guṇa Sāgara.” You need the text. We sell it. It is a beautiful mantra. It is a very beautiful mantra, and He is a God of protection. He can remove all negative qualities from us. If someone has problems or fears that some magician is attacking them, then sing Hanumān Chālīsā every morning. It takes five to ten minutes. You will see it is not blind belief; it offers real protection. So for those who cannot chant, we shall just listen. Those who can chant should come close to the microphone. And those who cannot should move away from here. So, who can chant Hanumān Chālīsā? No? Then go there. After that, we will have a nice program. Do not show your back to the camera. Those who cannot chant, do not sit there — no traffic. Sit straight. You can close your eyes, then more energy will come in. Many people may have fear, anxiety, unexpected sudden fear, or may think there is some magic or someone is casting something. This Hanumān Chālīsā will remove such afflictions. Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jaya, Bhāvanā Sattva Siddha Hanumāna Kī Jaya, Deva Kī Jaya, Kī Jaya. “Nijamān Mukar Sudhā Parpūrag Parvimal Jasa” — Śrī Hanumānjī, Bhagavān, very well said. Om Shanti, Om Shanti, Om. When Hanumānjī went to search for Sītā, whom Rāvaṇa had kidnapped and taken to Laṅkā, he found Rāvaṇa’s palace enormous, made entirely of gold. No one could enter without Rāvaṇa’s permission — not even a bird could fly in. There are many stories in the Rāmāyaṇa. When Hanumānjī came to search for Sītā and the message arrived that she was in Laṅkā, no one allowed him to enter. There was a Rākṣasinī, a demoness, very strong, named Laṅkā. Hanumānjī approached, and Laṅkā tried to bar his entry. Hanumānjī could have jumped or done many things, but he wanted to know if in Rāvaṇa’s territory there was any spirituality, if anyone believed in God. We generally call such people rākṣasas. However, atheists are not rākṣasas; we should not tell them they are negative — they are good. They believe; they simply do not believe what we believe. And what we do not believe, they believe. It is a question of nirguṇa and saguṇa. But a rākṣasa is different. That we call the devilish quality. They look completely human, but suddenly the āsurī śakti awakens in someone. When that āsurī śakti awakes, even your best friend will try to destroy you. At that moment, the Rākṣasa awakened. So, all were rākṣasas there. How was Hanumānjī to get inside? He waited until darkness fell, then he became like a little mouse — a monkey baby, but very small, like a little mouse. This mouse crept near Laṅkā. She looked around, trying to chase the mouse away. Hanumānjī darted back and forth, left and right. There was a huge gate, requiring many men to push it open, but underneath there was a small gap. So Hanumānjī slipped through under the gate, and inside he became large again. Early morning, before the dawn breaks, the āsurī śakti is sleeping and the devī śakti is awakening. If you prefer to sleep during dawn and sunrise, a lot of your spirituality slips away, and the sins of past lives become stronger for you. Therefore, Gurujī said, “One must wake up, get up before the sunrise.” Early to rise, early to bed makes a man wise and wealthy. Regarding health: you must eat sugar — sweet — when you can’t walk. When you go walking in the high Tatras (for us, the Himalayas) and you are so tired by midday, you take chocolate, you walk, and you have energy again. Spiritually, one should gain Brahmamuhūrta. Go to sleep early and make it a habit to wake up at that time. For one week you must force yourself to wake up, no matter what happens. After one or two weeks, you will have a habit of waking up. You may say, “It’s impossible,” but then a person like me can reply that all the time they have jet lag. In Europe we are sleeping, and in New Zealand we are awakening. What is the condition? Right now, in the morning in New Zealand, everyone is awakening, while here we are sleeping. When you are a little aged, it takes you fifteen days to overcome jet lag. A person like me recovers only a quarter from jet lag and then I am in Canada — again, more jet lag. So you say, “I want to sleep.” But after fifteen days, you become used to getting up at that time. Wake up early in the morning and practice your yoga. And if you are still sleepy, take a great cold shower — cold water from the river. The cold Danube or a mountain stream: take the cold water. All the body’s heat will come out, and with that heat you give energy, coolness, and refreshment to the whole body. Do good āsanas, good meditations. Hanumānjī was walking. Is there any sāttvic person? Brahmamuhūrta wakes them. Hanumānjī was walking through the streets of Laṅkā at dawn. Everywhere, in every house, there was a very nice sound, which symbolized the tamas guṇa. Hanumānjī was surprised: “Is there any one bhakta of my Lord, my God?” Then one person woke up; the window was open, and he said, “Śrī Rām, Jai Rām, Jai Jai Rām.” Hanumānjī’s ears became big, his heart swelled. At least one devotee, one bhakta, one believer, a spiritual person. Hanumānjī changed his form. He became like some paṇḍit or sādhu. And he said, “Brother, you residing in the name of God Rāma — it is very nice to see you. How did you come here? How did you realize this?” Then the person said: “Vibhīkṣaṇ moyā barosāhe Hanumānta, bin hari kṛpā mile nahī santah.” “Moyā barosāhe Hanumānta” — meaning, I trust in Hanumānjī. Yes, I have trust. O my dear brother Hanumān, “bin hari kṛpā” — without the mercy of God — “mile nahī santa” — you cannot find a saint. Part 2: The Nature of a True Sādhu and the Glory of Hanumān A holy saint—a real sādhu—is not made by merely changing one’s dress. Some who outwardly dress as sādhus are filled with anger, jealousy, ego, and pride. That is not a sādhu. A sādhu means simple. The definition of the word sādhu is one who is very, very humble. If you tell another sādhu in an orange robe, “Please, could you sit on that side?” and he retorts, “I am a sādhu! Who do you think you are? Don’t you know?”—then he is not a sādhu. So, the opposite of sādhu is svādhu. Svādhu means taste. Someone spoke, “Don’t eat sugar.” When ice cream, sweet fruit, jalebī, laḍḍu, kolachka appear—that is called taste, the sense of taste. When you swallow sugar or ice cream, after it passes the vocal cords, there is no more taste. Then what happens? If you eat mushrooms and you like them very much, you make a soup. One poisonous mushroom gets in. In the mouth it is tasteful, but when it goes to the stomach, then you experience not just Yoga Nidrā, but Mahā Yoga Nidrā, Mahā Samādhi. So, that is the definition of a sādhu and a svādhu. One sādhu went for bhikṣā, and one house lady, in the morning during brahmamuhūrta, was making butter from yoghurt. She was churning and had put a little cold water inside. From one litre of yoghurt, you put two and a half litres of water, and then you churn—so the butter will come up. After that, we call it buttermilk; what remains is called chās. When everything is still and the butter has not yet been separated, it is very tasty. Milk became yoghurt, and yoghurt is full of butter and so on—this is the best quality. So one sādhu went for bhikṣā and asked, “Please, can you give me bhikṣā?” She said, “Wait. I am churning my butter. When it’s done, then I will give you the buttermilk.” He said, “For a sādhu, no taste. Give it to me as it is, without churning,” because the whole butter is inside. So, she said, “I know you are a svādhu, not a sādhu.” So, it is not easy to become a sādhu. It is said, also in the Bible they write, “After this, die and live.” Die and live. Mahāprabhujī’s bhajan says, “Mahāprabhujyā bhajjane saṅkhyā jīvat hī muradasam reve nai siddha nai śrī mahāhiraṅ kā deva satguru.” So, those are the real disciples of the Guru. They have no doubt, no anger, no greed, no hatred, no hate, no pride. “Why did you do this to me? Why did you do this? Why do you take this from me? Who are you to ask me?”—these kinds of words are bitter words, and these bitter words are poisonous words. So, there are many different poisons. Negative words poison everything, whereas sweet words harmonize everything, bringing sweetness. So, I believe in Hanumān. Without the grace of God, even a sādhu cannot be attained. O Hanumānjī, without the grace of God, one cannot even get a sādhu. Many of you are ready for getting a sādhu. And many who became sādhus—they are already going; marriage is finished again. How many? How many became sannyāsa? When you become a sannyāsī, your ego comes up, but we are the servant. That’s it, and to show this humbleness, for the sake of humility, the day before yesterday, Jesus was washing the feet of his devotees. If the devotee doesn’t do it, then the master says, “Okay, I will do it.” That’s it—be humble. Well, Hanumānjī is going. It’s a long story. But all the soldiers of Rāvaṇa caught Hanumān. And, of course, Hanumān easily wanted to be caught. They brought him into the palace of Rāvaṇa and said, “Who are you?” I am Hanumān. “Who are you?” I am a bhakta of Rāma and Sītā. Rāvaṇa said, where is Rāma and where is Sītā? He said, in my heart. “In your heart? Rāma? Sītā?” He said, “Yes, in my heart.” Everyone can say, “Show us.” Then Hanumānjī tore open his chest, and what was seen inside? Bhagavān Rāma and Sītā sitting in the heart of Hanumānjī. Really, and that is written in the Rāmāyaṇa; many pictures are there. And that’s what we also say, that Jesus gave his holy heart. It’s not that Jesus gave the holy heart; Hanumānjī gave the holy heart. And that Hanumānjī was Jesus too, like this. They are one. Don’t see duality in this. And so, there were many, many great things that Hanumān did. At that time, there was a battle. And the brother of Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, got an arrow in his heart. He was going to die; Rāma was very, very sad. “My brother, I promised my stepmother that I will bring your son back.” But emergency, emergency! Now where is the ambulance? And where is the doctor? So there was an ambulance and the doctors, so they quickly brought from... It happened in Sri Lanka, so they called the Āyurvedic doctor. So Rāvaṇa said, “You should not treat and give medicine to this brother of Rāma.” The Āyurvedic doctor said, “A doctor doesn’t see religion or non-religion, warriors or non-warriors, yours or others. The principle of the doctor is to save everyone’s life, even your enemy.” So the Āyurvedic doctor came, and he saw the pulse of Lakṣmaṇa. “Oh my God! My pulse is also still bubbling.” Yeah, really? This also? Yes. He said, as soon as the sunlight will come, he will die at sunrise. It was 10 o’clock in the evening, night. “Only you can save his life if you can bring the Sañjīvanī herb.” So they said, “How does Sañjīvanī look? Where is Sañjīvanī? Vaidya, please, can you bring it?” He said, “Sañjīvanī is only in the Himalayas.” And if he can bring it from there, they are here, I can save the life of Lakṣmaṇa. Where is Sri Lanka and where is the Himalayas? How many thousands of kilometres distance? Rāma was, all were very sad. This is called God playing. Such a theater that he wants to show the people what God can do and how God can be feeling. Hanumānjī said, “My Lord, give order to your sevaka, your bhakta. I will bring the Sañjīvanī.” “Yes, Hanumān, but it is very far.” Very far? Nothing is very far for Hanumān. He jumped. He jumped like more than a jumbo jet. Ten thousand kilometre speed. Hanumān, but Rāvaṇa has his CIDs—Big Brother’s watching. He got the message that Hanumān is coming to get the Sañjīvanī on that particular hill of the Himalayas, and there was a nice lake. So Hanumānjī thought, “It was too quick, I was flying.” And there was a beautiful lake. Hanumānjī wanted to take a little bath. And the Rākṣasa’s secretaries, CIDs, one became a big crocodile and caught Hanumānjī. He caught Hanumāna, he held his mouth, one on this side and one on that side, but Rāvaṇa said, “Do some miracles.” So the Rākṣasas, CIDs, security—Hanumānjī told them, “How should I know what the Sañjīvanī herb is?” And that Vaidya said, in the night all that Sañjīvanī is sparkling, like a light. So the Rākṣasa gave the mantra. Everything is lightning. Now Hanumānjī said, “Everything is lightning. What should I take?” So he took the hill itself, big on his hand, and he became like an aeroplane with goods, with high speed, and he flew over Rāma’s birthplace. And his brother Bharata, his CID secretary, said, “Some enemy of Rāvaṇa is running, going towards Rāma.” And Bharata shot an arrow in the night. It caught in Hanumānjī’s knee. Hanumān came down to pull it out, and Hanumānjī said, “Śrī Rām, Jaya Rām.” Bharata said, “Oh God, I made a mistake.” Who are you? I am Hanumān. Oh God. They took the arrow out and said, “I will give you some remedy.” And the rest is in the Rāmāyaṇa, written. So, Hanumānjī said, “Rāma kāja kī mohe kahāṁ biśrāma.” O Brother Bharata, without fulfilling my duty to my God, how can I rest? There is no rest for me. Again he flew. It was about morning, two o’clock, and in four hours the sun will rise. God Rāma said, “Shashi ḍhal rahā, shame tal rahā, Lakṣmaṇ kī prāṇ jā rahā, Hanumān, kab āoge?” Shashi is the moon. So the moon was going down, and the sun will rise. Lakṣmaṇa’s life is going. Where are you, Hanumān? Rāma said, “I don’t know which of my past karmas is coming now in front of me.” So even though God has karma, do not think that you have no karma. What are we? We are just nothing. Karma of the Jesuses, Krishnas, Buddhas, Rāmas—but they are above. But they are performing to give us a lesson. Hanumānjī came, life came in everyone, and he said, “I don’t know which is the Sañjīvanī, please take quickly.” So the Āyurveda Vaidya took those herbs, made the juice, and put it in the mouth of Lakṣmaṇa. And powerful Lakṣmaṇa got up and jumped up: “Śrī Vara Rāma Candra Bhagavān.” So now the Indian embassies and these people say Āyurveda is 5,000 years old only. Look into the Rāmāyaṇa. So the first medicine, the first is that Āyurveda. From the time of God Śiva, so Hanumānjī brought this. So there are many, many miracles of Hanumānjī. Such a person, if you help your father, your mother, or your master, you are like a God. That’s it. So Hanumānjī was great, and in his heart, and in our heart, is also God in our heart. And Hanumānjī is in our heart. He is not a monkey god. Don’t say it’s a monkey. Oh no, no, no. So Rāma is the Ātmā, and Hanumān is the Jīvātmā. So your jīvātmā is Hanumān—your strength, your will, your power, your energy, your knowledge, that is the Hanumān in you. And Ātmā is Rāma. That is what we call the eternal God. That is your Ātmā, you are that one. We are the essence of that one. And the essence is enough. For a very tiny seed, a very tiny seed of the banyan tree, it becomes a huge tree. So your willpower is your Hanumān. Your strength is your Hanumān. And your fear is Rāvaṇa. Yeah, so you can just step on it and go. Because Rāvaṇa came and said, “Hanumānjī,” so Hanumān said, “OK, you can move my tail.” And Rāvaṇa wanted to pull the tail of Hanumānjī to throw him away. So he tried very hard to move the tail of Hanumānjī. He could not move the tail of Hanumānjī half a millimetre. So again, he was pulling. And what happened? Rāvaṇa’s crown fell down at Hanumānjī’s feet. Hanumānjī said, “Not at my feet, at Rāma’s feet.” So, there are many, many, many glories. And we are all that; we are all like that. So, now, therefore, in the Maṇipūra Cakra is Rāma. We have this mantra, what we call Rāma. Maṇipūra Chakra is Rāma. Now, sit all straight, and we will do now one kind of beginning of one Kriyā. So this is a kriyā for you, all of you. So we shall also give the chance to the camera people. They should also practice. So now we can finish the webcast, and we will do something. That Kriyā, you will see, is like you are sitting in endless space. Sunechnam Pṛthvīśvara.
