Proudness

The ego of a devotee is cured by divine grace through humility. Even great beings can develop pride in their service. Hanumān once believed Rāma's victory depended entirely on him. Earlier, Garuḍa also lost faith after rescuing Rāma from a snake-arrow, thinking God needed his help. Garuḍa, in despair, was told only the crow-sage Kakabhuśuṇḍī could cure him. As Garuḍa approached, hearing the sage's discourse restored his devotion, and he saw even the gods listening. To cure Hanumān's pride, Rāma sent him to deliver a ring to a sage in the Himalayas. The sage told Hanumān to throw it into a pond, which was filled with identical rings from every divine incarnation. Hanumān then understood his role was not unique but part of an eternal cycle, curing his ego.

"Hanumānjī became proud. He thought, 'If I were not, Rāma would not be successful.'"

"Hanumān, don’t be proud. Don’t think that through your help, Rāma was victorious... It was a test for you."

Welcome, all dear ones, all sisters and brothers, here and in other parts of the world. I have some very good news first. You may know it, but I want to let you all know. There is one story. I will go to the story. The story is about Hanumānjī’s ego. When God Rāma came back to Ayodhyā after fourteen years, to his birthplace, everyone was very happy. That time was called Rāmarājya, the kingdom of Rāma. The whole of Indonesia, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, other parts of the Middle East, all the way to Turkey and some parts near Europe—it was a big kingdom of God Rāma. The culture of God Rāma, you should go to Indonesia, Bangkok, etc., those islands. What a beautiful festival, more than in India. God Rāma was in Ayodhyā, his place. Everything was peaceful, but time does not stop. Karma spares no one, and time does not wait for anyone. Even the highest of the high, when God comes, one day He has to go. Who are we? But our ātmā is immortal. In the body, however, we have the ego. One day, Hanumānjī was sitting in a beautiful garden park with many fruit trees and different kinds of fruits. Hanumānjī always had his mālā in his hand. Wherever you see Hanumānjī’s picture, there is always a mālā in the hand: Rām, Rām, Rām… the unbreakable name of God. When he moved the beads, it meant Rām, Rām, Rām. With this sound, for him, the name of God was Rāma. He was such a bhakta. But sometimes the buddhi, the intellect, can turn for a while in another direction. Sometimes it is very important that one can open the windows so everyone’s intellect will again come to the good. Otherwise, even the master’s mind becomes hot. Śrī Rām Jai Rām Jai Jai Rām. But sometimes one should not be frozen; it should also be closed. Those who are sitting near the windows today have a duty. Hanumānjī became proud. He thought, "If I were not, Rāma would not be successful. Without me, Hanumānjī, Rāma would not have found Sītā." Not only that—we found Sītā, but how to bring her back? To bring Sītā from Śrī Laṅkā back to the kingdom of Rāmarājya, Hanumānjī said, "If I were not, who could fly over the ocean without an aeroplane? If I were not, no one could enter into Laṅkā." Not only this: without bringing the Sanjīvanī, Lakṣmaṇa would die. Rām, Rām… Yes, even when Rāma got the Nāg Phās (the snake arrow). At that time, every weapon was guided by mental power; there was a training. It is also called the Śabdabān. There is an arrow. You have to shoot, and somewhere behind is an animal or a tiger. You would say to this arrow, "Go and hit that tiger," and the arrow went there. It is written in the Rāmāyaṇa. Modern science is bringing this knowledge from there. One aeroplane, a rocket, at night without sound, then it sounds like a navigator. They put the bomb in the middle of the target. From where? We do not know. Coming from America? This science is that science. That was working with mental thoughts, and now it is with electronic thoughts. At that time, they had very strong willpower, that brain, that thought, that sādhanā. When they said one word, it would be so. Now we may say, "Please don’t curse me." But do you have the power to curse someone? No. And if you have the power, you will not curse. So the Rāvaṇas, in the battle, shot one arrow called the nāg, the snake. In the mantra of the army of the Rāvaṇas, "nāgha nāgha" means snake. It is also called Nāgdev; "deva" means god. Everything has some kind of power of the god. A tiny, tiny creature, what we call a tick, bites. What kind of poison gets into our body, and we get such an illness? The arrow was shot towards Rāma. Within no time, it became a big snake, and instantly that snake wrapped around Rāma’s whole body and began to let the poison go into Rāma’s body. No one could kill that snake. There were no weapons that could cut it. Rāma was lying on the earth. His whole body became more blue. He is Viṣṇu; He is blue, but became more blue. All the army of Rāma were monkeys and bears, no humans. What to do? They told Hanumānjī, "Hanumānjī, please find some solution." Then they said, "Only Garuḍa can free Rāma from the snake." The enemy of the snake is Garuḍa, the eagle. But when Viṣṇu comes in an incarnation, Garuḍa goes on holiday. On holiday, so they said, "Please search where Garuḍa is, and very soon Rāma will die." Hanumānjī jumped into space. Everywhere in the Himalayas, there are high peaks where Garuḍa enjoys. They found Garuḍa sitting somewhere and doing Rām Rām… and Viṣṇu’s name. Hanumānjī came. "Get up. What are you doing here? He is there, Viṣṇu. Come with me quickly." Garuḍa said, "Who are you? Why do you disturb me?" He said, "Don’t ask any questions. I will tell you everything. Come." So Garuḍa and Hanumānjī were flying at great speed, and Garuḍa came. He said, "My lord, unconscious, helpless, lying on the earth." "What happened?" Hanumānjī said, "Don’t talk. Do your work first. Free Him." That is called an emergency, sorry, the ICU room, where the doctor performs the operation. In no time, Garuḍjī made many, many pieces of this snake, and Rāma got up and said, "Oh, Garuḍa, you are here." He said, "Yes, Lord. May I serve you? You can go." Now, Garuḍa got ego. He thought, "If this is God, if this is Viṣṇu, if this is my Lord… I always thought that He is the mighty one, and He needs my help." He lost his bhakti towards Viṣṇu. He lost confidence, lost faith. So it happens to many of us. Sometimes we say, "Swāmījī, Swāmījī," and then after that, you know, still we are like in deep winter. We are driving, and suddenly our car begins to dance, and so our jīvātmā, our jīva, towards the Master or God is losing. Garuḍa could not meditate. He had devotion. He knew that it was his God. But one question arose: how is it possible that this happened to Rāma? He could not sleep, could not eat, could not sit peacefully anywhere. Garuḍjī was lost, day and night. He went to Brahmā. Brahmā said, "I can’t do anything." He went to Viṣṇu. Viṣṇu said, "I can’t do anything." "You can’t do anything? The creator Brahmā, you don’t know?" He went to Nārada. Nārada said, "What can Nārada do? I cannot do." Śrīman Nārāyaṇa Nārāyaṇa… Garuḍa said, "But where is my Nārada?" So Nārada said, "I am also searching, but I have such an illness now: confused, disappointed, fearful, stressed, depressed—everything is happening to me." He said, "Well, go to Śiva. Only Śiva can solve the problem." So Garuḍjī came to Śiva with folded hands. "Lord, please cure my disease." "What kind of disease do you have?" "I lost faith in my Lord. This and this and this happened." Śiva said, "This is a very dangerous, terrible, unhealable disease. I cannot help you." Garuḍjī said, "Śivjī, if you cannot do it, then there is no one in the universe anywhere. Please help me." He said, "Well, I can’t help you, but I can give you a hint where and how you can cure your disease." Then, we even have to go to a mountain or anywhere if we can cure our disease. Only the one who has the pain knows. Only the one who knows suffering knows that I am completely lost. Bhagavān Śiva said, "Under a mountain in the Himalayas, there is one big crow where he is residing. You should go to him. Your disease will be cured. A hundred miles before, your disease will begin to heal. And when you come near to the Kakabhuśuṇḍī, your complete disease will disappear." That is something. Many people now have cancer. If we know something, that we go there and our cancer is finished, my God, there would not be enough airplanes to bring all cancer-diseased people. Physical disease is easy to solve. But mental disease is very difficult; confidence is lost. Well, Garuḍjī was flying, and he could not even pronounce the name of Viṣṇu. Śrīman Nārāyaṇa Nārāyaṇa—he could not. Garuḍa was disappointed that his Lord, the Lord, could not help him. But he was flying in that direction. Pārvatī became angry. Ladies always have a good heart, a soft heart. After, maybe she is wrong. Pārvatī said, "My merciful one, why didn’t you help that Garuḍa? Exhausted, tired, unhappy, thirsty, hungry—and you didn’t help him." He said, "No, I couldn’t help him." Why? Because there are two reasons. The first reason is Garuḍa, as an eagle, lives on the highest mountains, very high, about 10,000 meters high. He is sleeping, resting, not even moving. And the crow is flying a little. How can you compare a crow and that eagle? Pārvatī said, "And yes, the eagle has an ego. He has such an ego that he doesn’t want to sit near the crow, so he has to go there." Secondly, there is one ṛṣi. That ṛṣi had one disciple who got ātmajñāna but was still egoistic. He humiliated his guru, and the guru gave the curse: "You will become a black crow." That Garuḍa, or that Kakabhuśuṇḍī, became the crow. But the memory of Kakabhuśuṇḍī is the whole story of Viṣṇu, Śiva, all. And so Garuḍa was giving satsaṅg. On that Himalayan peak, when Kakabhuśuṇḍī, that crow, was giving satsaṅg—the satsaṅg knowledge of his master—and to listen to the satsaṅg of Kakabhuśuṇḍī (read in the Rāmāyaṇa, it is not a fairy tale)—when Garuḍjī was coming, from that distance, his bhakti came again. "My Lord," and he began to sing, "Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa. Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa. Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa. Śrīman, Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa. Śrīman Nārāyaṇa." The closer he came, all his doubts vanished, all pain gone, all tyranny gone, and he became happy. While coming, Garuḍjī saw, from half a kilometer to about 200 meters away, that there were sitting many, many holy saints. What did he see there? Śivjī was sitting and listening to satsaṅg. Śiva was there. Viṣṇu Bhagavān was there. Brahmā was there. All holy saints, siddhas, all were listening, sitting there. And Kakabhuśuṇḍī was giving satsaṅg, and Garuḍjī was listening, sitting there. Then his ego went away. So that was ego. Hanumānjī was doing what? Thinking of Garuḍa, Kakabhuśuṇḍī, etc. "My lord Rāma, but if I had not brought Garuḍa, Rāma would not be alive." Okay, no problem. But that and this and that. "If I were not there, Rāma would not be successful." Sometimes people say, "We will not help anymore, Swāmījī. We will not come, okay?" So, Bhagavān Rām, He is called Antaryāmī. Antarjāmī means the one who knows and dwells in your heart. God Rāma said, "This Hanumān’s ego will destroy him. I should help him." But I cannot help directly. If I tell Dr. Śāntī, "I did this, I did this, I did this," and I say no, then her ego will grow big. So Rāma said, "Hanumān, Prabhu, Prabhu… God, God… Rām, Rām… Hanumān, you are very dear to me. You are great, Hanumān. I love you, Hanumān." Hanumān said, "Hanumān, without you, I would not have found Sītā. Without you, who would have gotten the Sanjīvanī from the Himalayas for Lakṣmaṇa? Hanumān, it is you who jumped over the flow from India to Sri Lanka." And He said, "Hanumān, you did so many things. You are the great helper. But Hanumān, the last, last seva I would like you to do, because no one can do it, only you can do." "Prabhu, what can I do? I do everything." So Bhagavān Rām gave one ring to Hanumānjī. "Hanumān, take this ring. There in the Himalaya, Lomaśa Ṛṣi is doing tapasyā for many, many yugas, where no human can reach. Few animals may reach, otherwise no one. The peak of the Himalaya, glaciers." "Prabhu, Rāma. How will I know who that one is?" Rām said, "That is a ṛṣi who has great tapasyā. He is above everything. He has no cloth, only one bundle of grass. When he rests, he uses this as a pillow. When he meditates, he sits on it. When the sun comes from this side, he puts the back side of it. When the sun came from the middle of the day, he put that bundle of grass—all his property, that’s all. His bed, his pillows, his blanket, his house, everything." Hanumānjī said, "Yes, Prabhu, so what can I do?" "Give him this ring. Give him the ring and come back. Then your duty is done." Hanumānjī was jumping, going, going, searching many, many hills. He found that Ṛṣi Lomaśa. Hanumānjī is coming and falling down again because glaciers are very slippery, but finally he came and made a praṇām. Lomaśa Ṛṣi said, "Oh Hanumān, you came? Rāma has sent you here." Hanumān said, "How does he know?" He said, "Yes, my lord, my god Rāma sent you one ring." He took the ring from his mouth. The ṛṣi said, "I see there is a water tank, like a water… not a tank, a pond. Throw it in the pond." Hanumān’s hair stood up—my God. He gave me this ring to give to this ṛṣi. He didn’t even take it in hand, didn’t look properly, and said, "Throw it in the water." But the ṛṣi said so, so he threw the ring. Lord Maharṣi Ṛṣi said, "Hanumān, Hanumān, please bring the ring back." So Hanumānjī went there to take the ring, and there were so many rings that came into the hand of Hanumānjī—so many similar rings. Lomaśa Ṛṣi said, "Hanumān, how many rings are there? That many rings is the number of times Viṣṇu has taken incarnation. And every time when God incarnates, He has to give me the tax, and that tax is a ring. So Rāma has done His duty, but He has to give me the tax. When they give me the tax, their duty is finished. Then Viṣṇu will disappear, and in the next yugas, He will come again. Hanumān, don’t be proud. Don’t think that through your help, Rāma was victorious, doing this, doing this, doing this. It was a test for you. Viṣṇu wanted to know if Hanumān would do it or not. Now you can go." Hanumānjī came back and said, "My Lord, forgive me. Forgive me all my mistakes, all my negative thoughts. Please, please… please liberate me." Then Bhagavān Rāma said, "Hanumāna, I trust in you. I am going, but you shall stay in this Kali Yuga here. It is your duty to save all the bhaktas." And that is the story. So there are great things. I had a wish to search in the Himalayas for our Lord, Alakhpurījī. For twelve years, fourteen years now, our dear Dr. Śāntī searched and searched in the Himalayas, and she found the caves of not only Alakhpurījī but Devpurījī also. So we welcome today Śāntī. We are all witnesses. Many of us have been there; many of us will go. That divine and spiritual place, all the roots of us, all our bhaktas, of our lineages, of the Alakhpurījī Siddhapīṭha paramparā, is the root, is there. So people said, "Swāmījī, you are great. You found the Alakhpurījī." The king of Kāṭhū, Abhay Siṅghjī, when I saw him at the cave of Alakh Purījī and Dev Purījī, he was so happy, so happy. But still he had some doubt, and doubt must be out, but how? I am not that Hanumānjī who can open my chest, so I pray to Mahāprabhujī. Mahāprabhujī, my complete work will remain half, so next, next month or after, from the second trip to the Himalaya, the king of the Kāṭhū… He was so nervous or happy when Swāmījī would come, when Swāmījī would come, and he came. When I came to Kāṭhū, he came to me, and he saw one little book. That book was Maṅgīlālji’s bhajans, but Mahāprabhujī wrote the commentary. Mahāprabhujī wrote there: Devpurījī’s journey to the Himalaya, also did tapasyā in Badrināth and high up in the mountain. And Mahāprabhujī wrote where he got sanyās in Pushkar, and Śaṅkarācārya came there—written by Mahāprabhujī in Hindi. So Abhay Siṅghjī, the king of the Kāṭhū, he said, "Swāmījī, I have no words to say to you." And so is this our book. It will come further.
