We need to educate our children properly

A satsang discourse on education, society, and spiritual practice.

"Sat means the truth, and saṅg means to be together. In good company, with good friends, we learn good things."

"Hope is the walking stick from the cradle to the grave. One cause [of disease] is the wrong way of nourishment."

Swami Madhavanand Ji leads an evening satsang, defining satsang as true company. He discusses the loss of traditional education and parental guidance, linking modern societal problems like youth disconnection and illness to this cultural decline. He contrasts utthān (upliftment) with patan (downfall), shares an anecdote about speaking to gang members, and concludes by teaching a chanting technique using "Aum" to channel solar energy for healing.

We will chant Aum, but, please excuse my throat today. We will learn how to chant Aum. Of course, we have chanted Aum many times, but today is a satsaṅg. The subject is satsaṅg itself. In satsaṅg, you can speak about anything that we can learn from. The first mantra we chant leads us from darkness to light, from unreality to reality, and from mortality to immortality. Glory to Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī. Glory to Śrī Devpurījī. And glory to our beloved Satguru Dev Swami Madhavānand Jī. Our dear Mahāmaṇḍir Swami Vivek Purījī. All sisters and brothers, it is a beautiful evening. I thank all of you for coming here, especially as this program was organized within just two days. The subject is satsaṅg. Sat means the truth, and saṅg means to be together. In good company, with good friends, we learn good things. Nowadays, our youth and children do not receive the kind of education that we who are above 50 or 60 years old received. This is one of the biggest problems: the youth lack proper direction. Children do not obey their parents, and those parents often lack the knowledge to educate them properly. The first education comes from the mother. When a mother knows she is pregnant, she begins to speak with the embryo. Only the mother knows how she speaks; even the father does not know how she communicates with the embryo. The scriptures—the Upaniṣads—originate from the Vedas, which are the oldest scriptures in the world. There are 108 Upaniṣads. Upaniṣad means to sit near (upa) the master (niṣad). The student sits near the master, the sādhu, to receive education. In one of the Upaniṣads, the first mantra is given: "Mātṛ devo bhava." The first God is the mother. "Pitṛ deva bhava," then the father. "Ācārya deva bhava," the teacher. And "Ṛṣi deva bhāva," the spiritual masters, the great ṛṣis. The first God is the one who gives knowledge and life in the womb as an embryo. The first education is from the mother, then from both mother and father. The best education is in the lap of the parents. That is why we have the word "lap" for children. But nowadays, children have no lap in their parents because the parents' lap is now occupied by a computer. We give children toys. Toys cannot educate us; they are only to divert a child's attention. It does not matter what kind of toy you give; it is not life and cannot give true education to children. People hang little toys above the cradle. This means the child has lost the lap of the parents. We know what happens. In many cases, after one month, the mother gives the child to a babysitter and goes to work. In ancient times, everywhere, mothers lived with their children until the children were older—five years, ten years. There are different kinds of education. One education is from school, college, and university. But this is for our survival, to live. The education of love, harmony, understanding, and peace—what parents will give—others cannot give. What we call kindergarten has developed now. A few decades ago, there was no kindergarten. Our innocent children are put in kindergarten because parents have no time for them. Children should play with our neighbors' children. We should not keep children with us all the time, but with other children who are playing. Slowly, we are losing our culture. If you believe in religion, take the Islamic religion. I admire them. They have education from their holy Quran in their schools. Unfortunately, other religions often do not give that kind of knowledge, and that is why we are lost. Of course, we would like to be equal, but equal can never be. The subject of the satsaṅg: there are humans. When a child is born and grows, there are two ways, like when a seed sprouts and has two leaves. For humans, these two ways are called utthān and patan. Utthān means development, achievement. Patan is destruction. Taking drugs, being in bad society, not following parents—these are patan. They look like humans but do not have human education inside. We are sorry for them. Why did the mistake happen? Some parents realize their child is taking drugs, alcohol, has no respect, and does not want to work. They are very sorry. Why? Did you give the child as a human? Animals also have that responsibility. If we did not give proper education, this is what happens. When a child is given to kindergarten, or nursery school—the word "nursery" is negative because a nursery is for trees. Our children are not like trees that we put somewhere. Children get fear. In kindergarten, they are told, "Now you sleep, eat." Mothers and fathers tell children, "Have no fear," but when someone else frightens the child, that remains in their subconscious. Then, from eight or ten years onwards, children do not obey. By fifteen years, they are completely out of your hands. Such education loses the culture, tradition, nationality, and religion. That is patan. Uthān is to be humble, kind, spiritual, cultural. If your child studies and does good things, we are proud. It is like one seed with two leaves. That one seed is called Saṅgha. Saṅgha means to be with. We are sitting here; this is a Saṅgha. We add one letter to this Saṅgha. One is Ku, and the second is Sat. Ku means bad society, not good education. Ku saṅgha is distraction. Sat means the truth. Satsaṅg is true company, good society. We are proud; our country is proud. We need satsaṅg. The duty of the parents—if they do not take care of the children properly, only giving toys or nice dresses—this is not education. Sometimes young ladies who are getting children follow a fashion. They want to give love and always have the child on their body. There is a kind of backpack where the baby is carried on the chest. But 90% of children do not get proper oxygen. They cannot breathe properly because the child is pushed against the chest. I am sorry, but I have to say something. Please do not use this. In China, people working in the fields use it because they have nobody to take care, but they hold the child far from the body. Please tell your grandchildren, your young mothers: do not push the child here. Sometimes a child cries because there is no oxygen. What kind of mother are you? Please teach your child how to be a mother. Do not have a child before you know how you will raise it. Maybe you were thinking of a different satsaṅg today, but I am sorry for these little children. This is also satsaṅg. This is what is happening in the whole world. Children are lost from the parents, and then there is no love for the parents, for the country, for the culture, or for our environment. The first thing we have to learn is how to educate children. This is the subject: Satsaṅg and Kusaṅg, good societies and bad societies. They are not bad in themselves, but they do not know what to do. Some people, when children are 16, 17, or 18 years old, say, "Why don't you go somewhere? What are you doing at home?" I was in America many times. In one big city, people told me that when a child is about 10 years old, the parents sell the house. The child goes to school, and the parents disappear. The child comes home, and there is no one—no parents, no house. Certain children then join gangs. You know what happens to gang children. There was one priest trying to help these young children, and they tried to shoot him. He made an NGO and invited me to give a lecture. People with me, Europeans and Americans, said in German, "Yesus Maria, Swāmījī, please don't go to the gangs." They were so fearful. I thought, if I do not go, they will say Swamījī is very fearful. There were strong people with me. We went to a house where the priest provided food and rooms—a kind of club. My car arrived. Three boys were sitting on the corner of the street. Two other girls and boys were sitting and drinking beer. I went into the club. They were looking at me. They had their own tattoos to show which gang they belonged to. I stood in the middle of many gangs. They took me to the second floor into a room with about 100 boys and girls. I sat in front of them to give a lecture. I thought, "Maestro, what should I tell them? If I talk about drugs, they will survive?" I said to myself, "Today is my test, life or death." Someone was sitting on a chair; others were sitting in the window. It was true, not a joke. I gave the lecture. Mahāprabhujī gave me good thoughts. I can tell you, out of so many people, about twenty boys and girls had tears from what I told them about life. I spoke for about 40 minutes. Then the organizer asked, "Do you have any questions?" The boys were drying their tears. One boy said, "I have no question, but guy, you are a good guy." I said thank you and left. So there are situations in the world like that. Satsaṅg is for developing from such things. Now, another point about satsaṅg. How many hospitals do you have for cancer? How many problems do we have with kidneys and liver? There are many. A hundred years ago, there were not so many diseases. This is the cause of disease. One is junk food; we just swallow it to fill our belly. Organic food is the best. As long as you chew, the taste develops in the mouth. With junk food, if you chew longer, you will feel like vomiting. Then we take chewing gum. The chewing gum goes in the mouth, the signal goes to our intestines and stomach that something will come, but nothing comes. Hope is the walking stick from the cradle to the grave. One cause is the wrong way of nourishment. The second is disappointment, fear, anxiety, and sorrow. This kind of situation nowadays in communities: we have problems between couples, husband and wife, or in business. These create disease in the organs of our body. Which kind of problem you have attacks a specific part of our body and collects germs or tissues we call cancer. There are other causes. Yoga is a science of the body. But how long will we do yoga if we take wrong food or have wrong situations in the family? I do not want to ask you to raise your hand, but answer inside: how many of you are disappointed? Ask people who are 80 or 90 years old how many disappointments they have had. Wife and husband are like two wings of a bird. The bird can fly with two wings. These wings are given by God, coming from the egg, so that lifelong these wings are with us. Does anyone now have the strength to be like that? This is the cause in our society, and so many illnesses result. Can we have a peaceful society? We are okay. Parents are okay. The couple is okay. Everything is good. But from outside, the pressure and many different kinds of comfort affect us. A hundred years ago, there was not all this comfort. People were more healthy and happy. Now we have everything, but we are not healthy and not happy, my dear. We have to find a way and begin to help our neighbors and friends, to bring our society back according to our culture, tradition, and religion. There is one gland called the thyroid gland. How many people have thyroid gland problems? Someone has a hormone problem, but mostly the thyroid gland has a problem because we swallow all our problems inside. There is no one who can listen to us, and if we tell someone, we will be in trouble. So we swallow the problems, and that is how the thyroid gland problem or cancer develops. If you have emotional problems, female organs or male organs can be attacked by disease or cancer. Still, we have something with us that we can try to release these problems. I am not a doctor and cannot promise 100%, but I am sure that through practicing yoga, we can lead a healthy, happy life. Now, in the whole world, people turn to yoga. Thanks to the Prime Minister of India, Modi, he awoke awareness of yoga for the whole world. But again, doing it the wrong way—yoga is not a sport. Luckily, in your country, for more than 30 or 35 years, Yoga in Daily Life is simple. We do like this, and others say, "We are not little children." We are calling, "Come, come." If you close your fist, it is not only from the soldier's blood till here. Is the exercise done? In your country, there are many yoga teachers. There are some people who are not yoga teachers but are teaching yoga in their life. We do not know who or where they are, but families are practicing. Why not? For that, I teach that all should practice. There is one practice I want to teach you now that can remove depression, improve our memory, and definitely help some organ problems get better or heal. I have been talking; one hour is enough. The whole earth is connected to our Sun. Everything is full of the energy of the Sun—our earth, water, vegetation, and us. I was thinking of a different subject, but Vivek Purī said, "It's a satsaṅg, you can talk anything." I said, "That is good." So I will come again to a very good subject: the eternal journey of the soul. Not this or that, but your soul. This is not a normal or simple subject. We all have been traveling in endless space. Ādiguru Śaṅkarācārya said: "From where did I come? For what did I come and what am I doing? Where will I go?" We do not even know this answer. So, the eternal journey of the soul. But that is the next subject we will come to. So, the Sun. We are all coming from the Sun. The soul, many, many. According to the Vedas and Upaniṣads, I am telling you how the soul is descending and where the soul should go. It is called destiny. Do not think the human soul will always be human. No. It is destiny. The soul can go to the reptilian, even into vegetation. We have no power; it is only our destiny. There is one question people sometimes ask me, and I was always thinking how to answer. I searched for an answer, and maybe you know, I did not know. I will tell you. The question is: what was first, the chicken or the egg? I meditated and went to the roots. That is true. Before all creation, there was nothing, only empty space. Then came the sound, the resonance. I am telling it very short. "Ekoham bahu syāmi"—I am one and now I will multiply. There was no one, only sound. The story is long, but there was no one. Someone was called Svayambhū, who has no mother and no father. It is he who manifested himself from nothing, and that was first Śiva. "Ekoham bahuśyāmī." From there creation begins. So, who was first? The egg or the hand? Śiva. Yes. So the soul enters into us and goes further. It is coming, touching. You can ask some doctors; they make videos. For humans, when it comes into the mother's body, it is just like a drop. There are immense cells, but that is the sunlight. The sun ray comes and then it develops the whole body. The center of our body is our navel. Our navel is the center of the entire universe. Yes, there the sunlight comes. That one gland, what we call the solar plexus—why solar? Modern science is developing solar panels to get Sun energy, but this was already written in yoga. We have that sunlight, and it goes from here. The NASA Center in America is discovering the Sun and the sound of the Sun. You can look at NASA and find the sound of the Sun on YouTube; you can hear it exactly. We have to awaken that energy in our solar plexus. From there, we can try to get rid of certain diseases. Experiments are being made through our navel to solve or heal some diseases, like cancer. I will teach you; you can do it now. Do not put your leg over; otherwise, you will go from sun to moon. Sit straight, please. If you do not want to do it, do not. The science of yoga, the chakras and Kuṇḍalinī, is a science, but I will not tell you today. In the Sanskrit language, the Sanskrit alphabet has 52 letters. These are the 52 petals of the chakras in our spine. There is a book called Hidden Powers in Humans, written in Croatian, where you can get everything. Why petals? Why lotus? That lotus is the embryo in the body, and the lotus involves all the organs and limbs. In Sanskrit, every letter has its resonance. First, when we chant, it hits our navel. That is your navel; I cannot touch because my belly is big, but it is still moving. First, listen to me. "Aum." It is touching towards the heart, the circulation in the heart, and vibration in the heart muscles. It is therapy through color and sound. "Aum." Beautiful. I think we will be singers in the opera. Thank you. Our pancreas, our anāhata chakra, and the heart chakra. What did we do? The sound went into space. Look again, we do. "Aum." Thank you. We are sending this vibration, this resonance, into space. Now we come to our thyroid gland. If you have a thyroid gland problem, you should do this. It is called the Viśuddhi cakra. The sound energy that goes out, we bring into our body, and now it will go towards our brain. This sound will awaken someone from depression. The third step: sing, "Aum." Please say, "Aum." We have to make our mouth a little round, like a laboratory pipe. "Aum." Thank you. It affects our nostrils, vocal cords, thyroid gland, etc. Now, all this energy we are bringing into our head will make vibration to our brain. It will awaken those centers in the brain which are less active. The circulation, all the tissues in the brain, get vibration in a positive way. You have to bring that solar energy from the navel to the top of the head, the Bindu Cakra and Sahasrāra. I will chant; you will not. "Aum." Sometimes, do this in the morning, noon, and evening, eleven times. Next time, I wish that you will become healthy. This technique will give you immense release in your body. The satsaṅg was very good for me, and I wish you good health, happiness, joy, and peace in your country. Thank you for inviting me. Thank you, Vivek Purī, and thank you to all the organizers. Om Śānti, Śānti, Śānti.
