The origin of Yoga

Yoga is the science of body, mind, consciousness, and soul. It is the ancient principle of balance between consciousness and space, which is the true yoga beyond mere exercise. Creation began from the resonance of Oṁ, manifesting light and Śiva, from whom all multiplicity arises. Life is sustained by the elemental fire of hunger, where life consumes life. Humans, distinct among 8.4 million creatures, possess intellect and are bound by karma; every action yields a reaction, perpetuating the cycle of birth and death. The purpose is to transcend this cycle through righteous action, harming none, thereby enlightening the soul to unite with the cosmic Self. For the body, practice gentle postures and breath daily to ensure health and awaken inner energy. Consistent practice is essential, as time can be allocated from one's day for this vital discipline.

"Yoga is a science of body, mind, consciousness, and soul."

"Every action has behind it a reaction, and when you take the reaction, it will be again an action."

Good evening, dear sisters and brothers. Welcome. It is my first time in this beautiful country. The city is beautiful, and I have heard that many people here are practicing yoga. The subject given to me is: yoga for body and more. Yoga is a science of body, mind, consciousness, and soul. It is one of the most ancient sciences for all creatures. Yoga was given by Śiva. I am sure you know the word Śiva. In the very beginning—we do not know how many ages ago—it is said in the message of Śiva: there was only empty space. There was no creation. Even the elements were not divided: water, fire, earth, and air. There was only space. I want to give a glimpse of the origin of yoga. There was space and consciousness. The consciousness has no desire to do anything. Space is only emptiness. What is consciousness? Is it in space, or is space in consciousness? The balance between consciousness and space is three principles: balance, harmony, and unity. That uniting, harmonizing, and balancing between consciousness and space—that principle is called yoga. Not these physical exercises, not these meditations, but the beyond, in the beyond. The space is like a mother. In the Upaniṣad, it is said that the first god is the mother. Then comes the father, but still these two are not there, separated, or in one place—it is not known. At that time, in the Vajraveda, the most ancient scriptures written in the Sanskrit language, it is said: "I am one, and now I will multiply." Who? There is no one. But how? Who said this nāda? Nāda means the resonance. And resonance is known as the supreme, the highest. That resonates, balancing all the principles, space and consciousness. One is that reality, and the rest is the duality. But how? Who, and how, is going to multiply? Then comes the sound. Everything remains, begins with the resonance. And in this resonance is ākār, ukār, makār. This is in Sanskrit letters, which we call "Oṁ." Definitely, you know that science has proved the sound in the sun is "Oṁ." So first comes the resonance, and from that comes the fire element, light, where there was complete darkness, dark blue, dark. But in that consciousness, the "now" awakes, which becomes consciousness, awareness, and intellect. So comes the light that is called Jyoti. And then in this light manifests, it is called Śiva. It is He who has no mother and no father, no brothers and no sisters, and no beginning. It is beyond and beyond. And so that Śiva—Śiva means that universe and sound—and there He appears, manifests Himself, coming in the posture of meditation. And then begins this whole creation and everything. Whatever is happening now with us also, everything began from that time. This is one point. Second: "I am one, and I will multiply." How? Where? And so from one seed, endless seeds develop. And it is said our space here has 8.4 million different creatures, divided into three categories: the creatures in the water, on the earth, and in space. If they come to this earth, how and what? If they will come and come, nobody will go. Life begins. But no one will move at all. What to do? How to move? So it is a long story, but it is said those elements have been created: fire, space, water, air, earth, etc. It is said that I will create one principle or one element, and that is hunger. Even the laziest of lazy persons, or any creature, will search for food and eat. The question comes: what will one eat? You see the beginning, one after another, one layer to another layer. It is said, how? So this is called the Jātāgni. It is in our body, in our navel. It’s called Jātāgni, the fire of hunger. When we are hungry, we are searching for anything, okay? What will they eat? What will they eat? Then it is said: "Jīva jīva bakṣate." Life will eat life, and so the creation continues. We are coming and going, coming and going. Jīva jīva bhakṣate, life will eat life. A question comes. There is a cosmic parliament sitting off the clock. What I am telling you is this. Dharmarāja comes. That you can say is God. God plays many roles. You are a baby, you are a brother, you are a husband, you become again the father, and continuously. So it’s coming, going, coming, going. Dharma means righteousness. It means the sin and the pious. When you do wrong, it is sin. When you do good, it is good. No one is doing sin for you. It is only you, through your five elements and ten senses of your body. If your husband is making a mistake, or your husband is killing an animal and bringing meat home, his wife is not guilty. Sin will go to him. Or if she did, it goes to her. Karma kisi ko nahī chhoḍā hai, the action will not leave you free. Every action has behind it a reaction, and when you take the reaction, it will be again an action. So you are going by action, reaction, action, reaction. This becomes the cycle of birth and death, the Cosmic Parliament. Is it becoming hot? What to do? We create problems. How do we solve these problems? Then it is hit one, the human, out of 8.4 million different creatures. One is a human. And humans have got the most powerful tool from God, and that is our intellect. So, God gave us 100% freedom, but said, "Whatever you do, you will get back." Number one, number two, this soul, your soul, my soul, her soul, etc. The great saint Ādi Guru Śaṅkarācārya, if you have heard, he said, "Who are you?" You are not this body. Not your senses. Not your thoughts. Who are you? Who are you? Wherever you touch, it is my shoulder, my head, my hand, my blood, my flesh, my pain. But who is that? Do you know? Koham, from where are you coming? Do you know where you were in your last life? Now you are here in Romania, a beautiful country, very beautiful, everything. But maybe in your last life you were in Japan. So, are you working for Japan or for Romania? And next time, you will go to Africa, and finally, you come to India to practice yoga. That’s it. So, from where did I come? You came. Who am I? Only one is the Brahman; the rest is all duality. And from where are you coming? For what did you come here, do you know? Definitely, you had some aim, definitely. But we don’t know. Thanks to God, He gave our knowledge three different knowledges. Two are hidden: the past, present, and future. We don’t know our past. If you know the past, that you were born in Japan, and now you are here, you say, "No, I want to go back to my Japan." So, then you will not proceed; you will not develop. And now I know who I am, but only as a human body. The rest we don’t know. And where will we go? We don’t know. Where are you going now? Do you know this, my dear? Then you have self-realization, but no, we are in darkness. So it is said that humans, through good karmas and good actions—do not harm anyone, do not criticize anyone, do not cause pain to anyone, give help, give understanding, give peace, give harmony, protect and love all creatures, oh man—then you will get, your soul will be enlightened, and you will become again one with that cosmic Self. Otherwise, we will move and travel and travel and travel. Therefore, the animals don’t know what is a sin and what is not a sin. Some animals are very good; they are loyal to their persons. For example, your dog is very loyal to you; your elephant is very loyal to you, etc. But they don’t know what is sin and what is dharma. And we are bound to the dharma. So when we do some action, it doesn’t come back as it is. So God gave us that kind of intelligence, that before throwing one stone, we should know where we would throw. When the stone has gone out of our hand, we cannot run and catch it back. The bullet is gone, so we have different actions through our words, our eyes, our touch, etc. The most powerful bullet we have is our word. Our word—when your heart’s word speaks to someone, it goes to the heart through and through. With the stone, the wound will be healed again, but the word that you spoke, you cannot heal it. We will forgive, but we will not forget. And that’s why we humans are bounded very much. We have duty. First is, why are we born as a human? Are we in the cycle of birth and death? Where will be the end of that? Through our good work, do not harm anyone. Don’t cause pain to anyone. Do good, get good. So this is the purpose of the yoga practice. So this is what we said: yoga for body and beyond. So this, what I spoke, is the beyond, but now the body. Someone said, "Health is not everything, but everything is nothing without health." The body is not everything, but everything is nothing without the body, our happiness, our joy, our love, our being in pleasant situations; we should take care of our body. And so, therefore, there are postures, yoga exercises. Yoga is not those kinds of postures where you are twisting your body like rubber. This is for the demonstration, or for the circus. It’s for young children. If you tell me to do this, I will say, "Yes, tomorrow we will do, not today." When we were small children, we could jump from here. But now, please don’t jump. You will jump twice: first time and the last time. Therefore, yoga is for our body to take care, and give some movement, circulation to the body, the muscles, the ligaments, the joints, our digestive system, etc., etc., with very simple, gentle movements. And that’s what I call yoga in daily life, which means practice every day. Don’t say, "OK, every Sunday, Monday I will practice, Saturday, Sunday." Or one day, once a day a week, in my yoga class I will go. No. Every day practice. Practice every day. Everyday practice. Everyday. Now you say that I have no time. I only come once a week for yoga class. I agree. Then also you should eat only once a week. You drink alcohol? Then drink only once a week. You have no time to drink alcohol. You have no time to smoke your cigarette. And if you have time for alcohol and this and that, then why not for yoga? Yoga is your life. And if you said, "I have no time today," I came to give you time. I came here to give you the time. Twenty-four hours is one day and night, twenty-four hours. Then you fly with the aeroplane from here to India or to America, ten hours this side, and seven hours this side, tired, boring, looking at the watch. So, what are you doing 24 hours? First, sleep eight hours. Who is the luckiest one who can sleep eight hours? You will need no more practicing yoga; you will be healthy from your sleep. But you don’t sleep eight hours. But I give you eight hours for your eating and sleeping, and your sleeping room, etc., etc. Now you have sixteen hours. What are you doing with sixteen hours? Go to work. If you work honestly in your company, then the economy of this country will be on top. Who is working honestly for eight hours? But okay, you do it for 8 hours. Now 8 hours still remain. One hour for shopping or going to the office, one hour for cooking and eating, one hour with your children, and so on. What remains? Five hours. What are you doing? Five hours. You are wasting your life with five hours. So I give you five hours. Now, these five hours, I give you two hours for your friends and one hour for going to the park or doing something. Every day, practice yoga for two hours. I give you two hours free, you will be so healthy, so happy. And, of course, we need the visitation doctor, for the doctors for the chemistry, they need also money. So sometimes we should buy some medicine. Otherwise, you don’t need any medicine, and your life will be prolonged. You will die healthy. You should die healthy. You sit in meditation and say, "Oṁ." You are in Brahman. Without pain, nothing. So, yoga in daily life is a very simple exercise. But how? That’s it. We have, for example, this exercise. You can do like this, but it has no effect. But we do it slow. And remain ten seconds, and five seconds, release. And five seconds again, close your fist, and ten seconds, keep it. It’s not only here, but it goes till your heart. When you have weak heart muscles, then your physiotherapist or doctor gives you a tennis ball and tells you to do like this, to strengthen your heart muscles. So this is not only for here, but it goes; if you remain there, it affects your heart, your solar plexus, and your spinal column—only this one. And I will say, practice only two hours, like this. Two hours! Now, I give you an example. It’s practical. It’s everything practical. It’s not a theory. Look to your hand, please. Oh, your hand is so beautiful. Nice. Do you know your beautiful line in your hand? Yes, but where is your luck? Your treasure of money is here. Yes, but money comes and doesn’t stop, doesn’t remain; it goes away. This is the palmistry next time, so close your fist, and with your left hand, hold your wrist hard, strong, yes, tight, very much. Look to your hand like this. Who will not do will not have an experience. Gentlemen, you have to do. Yes. And now, only, only open your palm and look at your palm. Tip of the fingers, palm. And now, concentrate. What will happen to your palm? I will say three times. One, two, three, okay? When I say three, then you will release. One, two, three. It’s practical, it’s not a theory. What is the difference between your right hand and left hand? Now we do it with the left hand also, otherwise we will be offended. If you do like this, it has no effect. Therefore, now we do it more consciously. Again, close your fist, and you will say, "I will do it." I am the winner. Every day, two hours, hold it, tighten it, yes. And now, open your palm. It will do good to your heart and your whole nervous system. Religion. Yes? So, this is how we can relax and practice slowly. One. Two. Many people can’t see me. Oh God! Thank you. So, it takes you one and a half hours every morning. Three months, same exercise. It’s called Sarvahitā Āsana. Then write me a letter. How it changed your body, your health, your muscles, your thoughts, your digestion, etc., etc. Then, next time when I come, I will give you the second step. So, our dear sister, I call her Rāmādevī, and she is living in Slovakia, but also here. There are many yoga teachers here, many yoga schools, so go there and change a little technique. Yoga is yoga. And the master of the yoga is only Śiva. So don’t say that my yoga. Our life is yoga. If you have digestive problems, if you have constipation problems, or you have different problems, also, there is one posture, a yoga posture, called Marjari, the cat pose. And that is so powerful. Mostly for the females. At the time of menstruation, they have spasms sometimes, and this posture, like the Marjari posture, within three minutes all tension and spasms will release. There will not be any more pain problems because that Marjari posture is for our lower abdomen systems. But also for the male, when they have a problem with the prostate, the marrow will again develop and bring it back. It will be healthy. So you practice, you have neck pain, very bad neck pain. You can’t move. Okay, don’t do it. We’ll do another exercise. We will do the other exercise, and your neck will be okay. When I first came to Europe, Vienna, Austria, in 1972, in my ashram, one American lady came from the embassy of America, and she practiced yoga with them. After three weeks, she asked me, Swamiji, is it true that if I practice yoga, my husband becomes peaceful? Does it affect my husband? I said, "Yes." So I will practice, and my husband will be okay. I said, "Yes, then explain to me how I will become better, too, because you became better. You were always making your husband nervous, and now yoga has made you calm and peaceful and good. The poor man, he is also happy." The breath. Our inhalation and exhalation. It’s very important for us to learn again how to inhale and exhale. We are breathing, we know how we are inhaling and exhaling, but people who have problems with depression, anxiety, when you come to your boss, you are nervous, or an examination comes, you are trembling. Why? Breath. Make an experiment. When it’s coming, examination now, no? Very soon, yes. So when you come to your hall for the examination in the university, always, first, sit down and inhale deeply, then exhale. Inhale. And exhale. Inhale from the stomach. Expand the stomach. Inhale the stomach. Then, in the lungs. Exhale first from the lungs. Chest, and then from the abdomen. So this diaphragm, it should go more deep, and first feel the air there. And before going to some very important meeting, examination, or getting a job, or you have a problem with going to the lawyers, etc., etc. Many problems. Then chant Oṁ 11 times. And relax, open your navel. That’s called the solar plexus. It is the power, the energy from the sun directly, day and night, continuously in your navel. If your child cannot pronounce properly, or someone has a problem with speaking, we have to correct the navel. You may touch your navel, and the seed of the sound is in the navel. Speak any word. Any word, okay? But look, where is the first pressure? Here or in the navel? Say mother, brother, dog, you, me, hello, hi. It’s here, not here. So we awake the energy, that solar energy in our body, from there. And if someone has problems, kind of fear, anxiety, depression, awake your navel Agniśāra Kriyā. Your yoga teacher will tell you, definitely. So there are four letters, a Sanskrit letter. Sanskrit language is a mother language, the Romanian language. There are many, many words from Sanskrit in the Romanian language. There are many words that are pronounced in the written form. So say A, A, going down, A, A, then say double A, then A, say A, A... that’s it. Strengthening our hard muscles, strengthening our lungs, awakening the solar energy, the power in the body. Now, this resonance which we are giving out will suck back into our body so that it awakens the circulations and all the glands in the brain, developing your memory. Examination, again. This memory will develop. 100% sure the depression will disappear. So it will flow in the river. What is your river number? Name? Mureșul. Finally, it will go to the Black Sea. So, make your lips like this, round. The lips like this. If you sit like this, it’s not good; then your lungs will suffer. For a few minutes, sit straight. You made it wrong. You jump again. It’s a technique you have to learn. Otherwise, again, empty. You are tired of your car. You pull the hair, but you make the hole again; air will go out. Navel, heart, vocal cord, and then comes to the brain. Humming sound like a bee. Then we said, so we filter the energy. Negative energy goes out, best energy we bring to the brain. Stop. Not again. You make a mistake. I said, "Stop." He said, "Stop. Leave your mouth open so." Yes. Stop. Again, somebody said, mmm. That’s wrong, you see. Always you are going to do wrong. Remain like this. Stop. There are a few people always going, "Mmm." Because they are from another country, they don’t understand the language. So then we come to the fourth position: navel, heart, vocal cord, and it’s called the sahasrāra cakra, the thousand petals, where we speak about cakras and kuṇḍalinī. Next time. So we will say we will close the lips. Eleven times morning, eleven times noon, and eleven times evening before going to sleep. Make the experiment. What will happen in your life? How will your memory be? Again, all the centers of the brain will awaken. I spoke too much. Yoga for body and beyond. Next time we will see something different. Thank you, and God bless you. I wish you all the best. First of all, good health for your family and for everyone. Thank you. Thank you.
