Guru Pūrṇimā: From Darkness to Light

A Guru Pūrṇimā satsang discourse on dharma, compassion, and the guru's role in the Kali Yuga.

"In this Kali Yuga, the fire of negative thoughts, negative energy, negative ways of living, and negative ways of eating is spreading without mercy toward other creatures and humans."

"Guru means leading from darkness to light, whether you trust or not, believe or not. In this situation, in Nishkal Yuga, we must follow the guru."

The lecturer addresses the assembly on the sacred day of Guru Pūrṇimā. He describes the increasing negative energy of the age, emphasizing the essential dharma of protecting all creatures and adopting a vegetarian lifestyle as a foundation for spiritual progress. He explains the guru's rigorous guidance as a form of purifying grace and calls on disciples to protect and propagate their spiritual lineage and its positive message.

Our satsaṅg daṇḍavat praṇām to our paramparā: Alakpurījī, Devadhī Dev, Deveśvara Mahā Dev, Ārādhya Bhagavān Śrīdīp, Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī, and our beloved Satguru Dev Swāmī Madhavānandjī. Bhagavān kī jai. Every day is a good day, but certain constellations are worshipped as Guru Pūrṇimā. For us, the new year begins on Guru Pūrṇimā and ends at the next Guru Pūrṇimā. In this Kali Yuga, negative energy is increasing. It is like a great forest where a fire starts to burn. A few years ago in Australia, a bushfire moved at such high speed that it took only minutes to travel from the mountains to a village. Similarly, in Kali Yuga, the fire of negative thoughts, negative energy, negative ways of living, and negative ways of eating is spreading without mercy toward other creatures and humans. The whole world is covered with meat-eating. Where does the meat come from? We do not know from whom. It does not matter from whom; our flesh could also be meat. There are already people beginning to eat human meat. What could be more indicative of Kali Yuga than this? Everyone must die one day according to destiny, life span, and age, but humans should have mercy toward every creature. I think it is written in the Old Testament or the New Testament: "Don’t eat what has eyes." Fish have eyes. Animals have eyes. Through our eyes, our ātmā sees the world. Our ātmā sees the whole world, and other creatures see God in our eyes. You will see God nowhere else. No matter how long you practice, performing many sādhanās—going up and down, hanging and acting, flying up and falling down, crying, standing in fire or water—you will not see God. You see that which is God, but you do not accept that it is God. Every life, every soul, is God, one. A holy saint, a poet in Greece, or a scripture says: "Every soul is the same." Someone taught me this about a month and a half ago. I said, "I am always telling everyone: each and every entity should love each and every entity, if not more, then at least as much as you love yourself." Every creature has fear. Every creature feels frightened. They feel the pain of torture. We see through media and Facebook how cruelly people torture different animals, including fish and trees. How can we, as humans, think we will see God? No, we are very far from it. But those who are under the shelter of holy saints—those who will not eat fish, eggs, and such things—they are holy saints. Others are in darkness; they do not know, or if they know, they do not want to. The endless ocean is slowly drying, becoming what we now call a dead ocean or dead sea. They are putting everything together as if it is a date, but we are not dead. We are living. Sooner or later, the light will come again, and the others will sink closer and closer with their own karmas and will just dry up. The Satyayugas will come. Guru means leading from darkness to light, whether you trust or not, believe or not. In this situation, in Nishkal Yuga, we must follow the guru. Even if your guru is angry with you, the more he is angry, the more it means he loves you. When he is very hard on you, say, "Yes, now he is educating me." When it is painful, say yes. Now your karma is being removed from your body, your soul, and your destiny. It is not easy. When you have a thorn in your palm, it is painful to pull it out. So, as bitter as Gurudev may seem, he is sweeter. That sweetness means knowledge, love, protection, care—everything. Our Gurudevs are with us. I am with you, and you are with me. But as Dr. Shanti said, to be the head of the holy seat is not easy. Many people want to become the successor, but a wise person will say, "No, I do not want to be a successor because it is very hard to sit on this seat, to give and keep the dignity of this holy seat. It is not easy, my dear." So we have to protect it. Who am I to protect? I am dancing with you. You are taking care of this holy saint’s seat. Ask the Pope; it is not easy. The Pope has no life. He cannot run and play football, go to the forest, go swimming, take his bathing suit, take his cycle, and go anywhere. No. The President also cannot go everywhere. They are confined. That is the truth. You can run away; no problem. You will be okay somehow. But still, we have to protect our dharma. If you protect your dharma, dharma will protect you. What kind of dharma? Any dharma. If you are a guard at a confectionery, it is your dharma not to let any thieves go inside and say, "Okay, you can go and come back." No. Then you have lost your dharma. You have your dharma; this is your duty. Whenever holy days come, we awake and open our eyes. "Gu" means darkness, "ru" means light. Pūrṇimā means pūrṇa, and pūrṇa means complete. What is complete? It is complete. When you take from the complete, it remains complete, and it is complete. Pūrṇam adaḥ, pūrṇam idam, pūrṇaṁ pūrṇāt pūrṇam udacyate, pūrṇasya pūrṇam ādāya pūrṇam evāvaśiṣyate. So it is that one. Purāṇa is a purāṇa. You became, you are born as a human—finished. You are a human. It does not matter if you are a small baby, toddler, boy, girl, old man, from here, from there, from other countries—anywhere, human. Now, protect human dharma. And what is the dharma of humans? To protect every creature, even the forest, water, everything. That makes great sense. Kali Yuga is coming very rapidly. I was in Boston in America for three or four days. It was not a place to live. In four days, I told them, "Sugandh Purī is very bad, terrible. We should go." There was nothing to eat. Meat, meat, eggs, meat, meat—everywhere. They brought us vegetarian food, said to be 100% vegetarian at Harvard University. There was a conference in a hall with a condition: if someone rents the hall, they must also order the meal from there. You cannot bring a meal from elsewhere. The price is much higher than outside. They said, "If not, then we don’t need you to come here." Anyhow, they brought salad and some bread—false salad and bread, and a very nice vegetarian salad. On the first day, Gītā Purī from our ashram in Alexandria was with us. Suddenly, in the salad, there was chicken. That was the first and last day. We went and brought some fruits and other things. Once, we made many parathas to last two days. One day, we went to a genuine Indian vegetarian shop and had a dosa. I mean, there is no choice to eat anything; you could die. You may take some nuts or fruits. I was dreaming so much at night: when will I come to Europe? When I feel good in my nice Vienna, yes, or Maribor, Ljubljana, Strelka, Hungary (oh my God), or Romania—but how many fruits and vegetables! I said, when will I go? Yes, still we are here. I can tell you that Austria is such a good country. They have many meat-eaters, but they have others also, very good. Day by day, Austrians are becoming vegetarian. There was a conflict because vegetarianism was considered a religion, oh God. So then they made vegan. Now, in vegan, there is no religion, and vegan is very strict and very good. In Vienna, there are good restaurants for vegans, and they are always full. This means people are becoming vegetarian day by day. But unfortunately, you get... a vegetarian, and Indians are becoming non-vegetarian. Already, it is very difficult. You cannot imagine. Half, or much, or most of the beef is exported to the Middle East and other countries from India, where this is the holy cow. But still, there are some very good restaurants in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Then you go somewhere on the highway; you do not know if it is this meat or not. You do not know if it is a dog, from an accident on the road. Restaurant people run and bring it there, cut it, and give you some vegetable, and you do not know. Some humans have lost human dharma. Dharma means protection, love, love... love. That’s it. It is said that Jesus is a birth of love. He was born of love, peace, and harmony. Love means protection; take care of this. It is said Jesus did not eat meat. It is said that the prophet of the Muslims, Muḥammad, was a strict vegetarian. Yes, it is written, and you should read exactly from the Quran. It is written that you should not kill any creatures. Just now on Facebook, Mohammedans gave a statement in India, and they read what was written in the Bible or in the Quran. But these people do not want to reveal what is inside; many divine things are written in the Bible, but that is already on the surface. Therefore, humans have the heart of God. Jesus gave the heart to everyone. Hanumanjī gave the first heart. Then after, they said Jesus gave the heart. Hanumanjī opened his chest, and inside were Sita and Ram. Shiva and Shakti are inside. Shiva and Parvati are inside. There is mother and father inside. Brother and sister are inside. Husband and wife are inside. It is a oneness, oneness. If you eat anything, do not think that you are eating. Do not say, "It doesn’t matter; today I will eat meat." You know how animals are separated, how they are transported to slaughterhouses. Unfortunately, there was some movement; the president of America said about refugees: "Okay, refugees can come. We will take children. Go in another way." Parents could go outside, and then the whole world was attacked. Then our good, dear president of America said, "Okay," and he cancelled and signed it. Similarly, when they separate the babies from the animals, they also have love. So, if you eat something from that pot, you should not eat anymore, not from that plate. There are many, many things. Today is Guru Pūrṇimā, and I wish you all the best. Mahāprabhujī, Devpurījī, Alakpurījī—this is our holy seat. We may be many, or we are not many, but we shall protect our holy seat here. One of our Slovakians and Czechs counted how many years I have been in Czechoslovakia. They said only in the Czech Republic, those who practiced—maybe not anymore, but did and are doing and teaching—number 1.7 million. From March 3, 1973, I was marching. When the saints are marching. How many books, how many scriptures, how many every time? So it must not be that all come with me. From them, at least 70% or 80% are vegetarian. They are practicing at home, teaching that home must not be coming to me. But they learn Yoga in Daily Life. Similarly, how many in Slovakia and in Boston? Our dear Sugandh Purī gave a very nice speech about Yoga in Daily Life. Then he suddenly saw a chart of the countries, the whole country’s chart. He saw how many ticks there were with little orange flags. They said, "These are their Yoga in Daily Life practicing centers or ashrams." They said the whole country is covered. It was like a jungle, yes. I am not making a joke. I did not know, but suddenly, I do not know from where, Sugandh Purī brought it. Then they all looked at me. He said, "Only one country, Slovakians, have to come. Hungary has to come, the whole Yugoslavia has to come, Croatia, this, this, and everywhere in many different countries." So Yoga in Daily Life has gone to millions. One book—you do not know how many people read it, how many practice. Then suddenly, one scientist—he is a scientist studying cancers, now moved to Atlanta—was sitting with me. He is a very intellectual person. He said, "Swāmījī, hidden powers in humans." The book is in my room. I asked, "From where did you get it?" He said he bought it somewhere, I think in bookstores. So one book, you never know where it goes, how many people. We should send a positive message. Our dear Dr. Shanti tried 383 pages, or how many pages? Yes, so many pages, I can tell you—378 plus this and that. You see, so many. But this book will go to how many people, and how will they read? The positive is not because of the book, but the positive, and this book we should spread. You should read it and give it to others. On the coming Christmas, you should buy this and give it to your friends, your lovers, and everyone. Give them this book to read like that. So we have to bring a positive message into this world. Nowadays, it is not easy to make a positive. You are positive, but they will blame you in such a way. I do not want to tell you what happened, but this is, and it was, the person has done nothing, nothing, but that’s it, okay. Therefore, we shall be positive, and please protect the animals from pain. Consider how they kill them, my God—with fire, with a gas flame, only burning the mouth of the dog, while the rest of the body is there, the heart is there, the soul is there. Everything. Then they burn the backside, the buttock, yeah, and then the legs. May there be some who died? So many, many things, not only this. The fish, how the fish is suffering. So we should not destroy nature, but only... take vegetables, fruits, and such. We will bring a positive message to the whole world. If your master tells you something, it is for your good. Do not say he is too strict and this and that. We have to follow. Like in the military: one, two, left, right, left, right... left, left... Right there, one talk: there is one big, very strong bridge in England. A very strong bridge. The military was going across the whole bridge. They walked left, right, left, right... and it created such a vibration that the whole strong bridge fell down. Yes, Soganpurī? Soganpurī is not here. Umapurī, you were there? Mānasa Devī? Who was there with me? Yes. Can you stand up? Did you hear this? What he said? Come here. Yeah. Do not say that Swāmījī is making a joke. I will not tell you only a fairy tale. There was a strong breeze, a very strong breeze from the dust, from the concrete and irons and everything. So what was it? Can you stand up, doctor? Loud vibration. It was a very nice and big bridge, and all this removed this bridge, and when they went up, it completely fell down because it was one kind of vibration. Left, left,... right, left. You see? So, it was the same vibration. There was not one opposite, and it collapsed. And so is this. Anyhow, so there are many things. I wish you all the best.
