Good eating

A satsang discourse addressing food purity, vegetarian ethics, and modern dietary challenges.

"If you use pesticide, the urea we call it, then once you give it, it takes 10 to 15 years to purify that earth again." "Sin is that which creatures, beautiful creatures, are there... torturing them, what they call halal, is a pain; the pain is the sin."

Swami Avatarpuri responds to a question about potatoes, expanding into a wide-ranging talk on the dangers of pesticides, hybridized wheat, and refined oils. He discusses the karmic implications of meat consumption and animal cruelty, shares personal anecdotes about contaminated food, and advocates for organic produce, home preservation, and dietary variety. The talk concludes with a mythological story about Shakti and a reference to a breatharian saint.

Nowadays, most people are concentrating on potatoes. They are easy to buy, easy to boil, peel, and just add salt and butter. Or polenta, made from corn. I think potatoes are not healthy in that way. Having them once a week or once every two weeks is okay. In a conference talk, someone was saying that potatoes can be a cause of cancer because of too many chemicals, pesticides, and the urea powder inside. When they spray it over the leaves or the plant, it remains for a while. Then, when it rains and gives water, it intensively collects that organic matter in the ground. Good organic food we can have on that ground where there is no underground water flowing from the neighbor's farms. It is good to have some land near a hill and a forest. Then the water coming from the forest is pure, clean rainwater. Otherwise, from a farm which is a little higher than your field, all these pesticides and water go into our field, so it is not organic. They say that if you use pesticide, the urea we call it, then once you give it, it takes 10 to 15 years to purify that earth again. So, there is a question also: why do vegetarians get so many cancers now? But when one is hungry, we say it doesn't matter, I eat today. Another thing is that, unfortunately, in this time, I think 98% or 96% of people are consuming meat now. There are two things. One, what we call the sin. So, what is the sin? Sin is that which creatures, beautiful creatures, are there. Even your dog. So all these dogs, cows, rabbits, etc. And many people are torturing them in a way which is not good. If you kill once, okay, be a little bit—not okay—but at least that animal doesn't suffer so much. But torturing them, what they call halal, is a pain; the pain is the sin. So it's better not to breed your animals. If we don't have a breed of any animals, then we are not selling. So, one who is breeding them, animals, and then who is selling them, and who is killing them? All are getting together this karma. And more, mostly, gets this sin. Who will eat them? If no one will eat, why should they kill? So in that way, in this generation, it is very difficult to be born again. This is a question: better to stay in the sūkṣma loka. And we will create a good sūkṣma loka; there is no pollution. So people are thinking to go to the moon, but we will not go to the moon. We will go to that locus where there are no borders. And very happy, this only soul is there. Yeah. That's why it is, someone said, there is one song which is, well, a song by Mirabai, you know. Do you know the Holy Mother Mira? I don't know exactly her bhajan very much, but she said in her bhajan to Kṛṣṇa or to God, "Why you gave me the birth?" And then it is a very painful bhajan, but she is singing, "If I would not be here, I would not suffer. I will not hear. My mother will not suffer." Etc., etc. So in the creation, it is said, unfortunately, "jīva jīva bhakṣate"—life eats life. So there are some creatures that only eat animals, and they don't eat the dead body or dead meat. They will eat the life animal, like the cats, the tigers. And if you give them a dead body after two, three days lying, they will not eat. As house pet animals, tigers, lions, etc., they have no chance to go anywhere. So they are feeding with the meat, which is maybe a few days old. So that is a situation of those cats, which are like pet tigers and lions and this and that. They are exactly like we, humans, now. We are eating now in the factories, the companies where they are making different kinds of food. There is something from the killed animals in different forms, so that also we don't know. So when we don't know, then I think, only I think, please, may you can give me some other choice. So that you buy one nice bread, a little white bread or something, and there are eggs inside. You buy these baguettes; there is also killed animals' fat and so on, and we don't know. So when we innocently eat something, and then God will say, "You also ate," and I will say, "No." God, you can blame me, but I didn't eat. You ate the other food in hiding. Then God is your mistake, not my mistake. Then, God, you should clean all my sins. So, I don't know. You give, after my lecture, you can tell what to do. So, in that, maybe I'm asking only. Maybe not sure, but maybe that will not be a sin for us because we did not know. So, this is many, many in this Kali Yuga, and then, secondly, that we don't have the power. In some countries, it's a law that children must eat meat. And why these innocent children? Then you are feeding them with the meat by law. So, thanks to God that still in India there is no law that children must eat. So, better not to give a child that. You are getting your beautiful child. And you are forcing them to eat meat, so that once it was like this, the many, many that they said, "Why are the white-skinned people not growing the population?" Many, many, they don't want to say, "Okay, we are now, but we will not have any children." There was one written in one magazine. But we should get that kind of law somewhere where we can eat as we like. So, I don't know in America if it's a law. In America, it's all kinds of law, and there is no law. So in this way, I don't know about in Europe, there are some countries. So we are talking about potatoes, as well as peanuts. So you take the oil, peanut oil. So I think in this situation now, a little bit we are saved that we can take olive oil, that's very good. It is not that much polluted, and I don't know when they are taking oil out and they are all, how do you call them, refining. When the oil is refined, then the essence of that oil is gone. It's only fat. So, there are so many kinds of oil. There is one oil, what is called, they are mostly for feeding the buffaloes, and that is called oil. Mostly you get it in England, and that is the seeds of the cotton and what is called the cotton oil? No, no, no. Okay, it doesn't matter. Holī Gurujī was with me in England, and we were there about two or three weeks. But the Indians, Gujaratis, they are very vegetarian, everything. And Gurujī had a burning heart. When you eat, you vomit. Burning, you know. Throat burning or the heart burning also, and me also. And Guruji said, "What happens? Why do I have this?" I said, "I have also. Eating was very good." Very clean and everything, but Gurujī always said to me, "Find out." So then I said, "Okay, I will search." And then I asked them, "What kind of oil are you using? Very pure, very good, and this and then..." It is this cotton seed oil, and it is so heavy. Holi Guruji was already vomiting. This kind of oil we don't eat; it's only for the buffaloes or the cows. It has a name, I don't know, I forgot the name. This oil we call different. Cotton oil, nobody says different. Vanilla, vanilla oil, okay? So also the oils are, also for us, many, many oils are not good. That kind of fat, that kind given to us, is refined. It is also very bad for our body and is also a cause of cancers. So, better we should buy the good organic olive oil from our beautiful country Croatia, Slovenia, the whole Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria. Everywhere, these countries have very nice oil. Greece has very good, Spain has very good, Italy also has very good, but what they call the cold-pressed oil. Or sesame, also good, sesame oil. Mustard oil is too heavy. Mustard oil is so heavy, like Manila oil. Now, we are vegetarian. We eat light and good food, but we mistake, we make this, that kind of oil. Now, the soya bean oil. Soya bean oil was, at one time, a good oil. But soybeans are also manipulated and hybridized, and also have a lot of pesticides. So in that way, it is better to have some of our cow's butter. This way is also now the corn, what we are using, any kind of corn. And what we call the wheat. And wheat was also coming from the Mexican side somewhere. But this wheat was very thin and little. But that is slowly, slowly changed. So the wheat was very good and dark red. Good, very good. And now they made it very thin skin, white wheat. It's mostly white, white flour. And that you have the bread, and this and everything, very fine. Yesterday we had very nice something, like a big chapati or a puri or something. You ate langos. It was good because oil inside, fried, and the tongue likes it. But the liver is screaming, crying. He said it again. I'm purifying, cleaning, but again, this. So that was a white flour, a complete white flour. So we can take some rice, we can take the grain of what we call dāl. These things are very healthy. Less fried things, home and here also. So now another thing that is still, the letter is not so, Mr. Beloved Master, the variety of the different vegetables, and less amount of the potatoes. Oh God, no potatoes. There are so many people, they are only eating the potatoes. I have one disciple, and her mother, mostly she likes only potatoes, nothing else. Her husband eats only meat, and she eats meat, but mostly potatoes. And I don't want to tell further. You can make a video of us, but we have a beautiful hall. There is a training aeroplane school. And potatoes, wheat-containing food. So always getting wheat and potatoes, and wheat and potatoes. P.S. Today's wheat contains 40 times more gluten than the old. So I will be all again on the wheat, you know. So what to eat? There is one very beautiful training, and people are doing it. That was only yogīs doing, some yogīs in the Himalayas, because there is nothing to eat. So, yeah, when we go to Alagpurījī, there may be some little grass, nothing. So they made a training, "The Sunlight That Is the Best," so we can invite this person who is giving training that there is no more drinking and no more eating. There are in Europe people doing very good. I had one disciple, unfortunately, she died. But not because of this, so she made a training, and she did not really—she could not eat anything—and she was very healthy, very happy, very strong. And this is that energy, the sun, the solar energy. There are solar panels, solar energy, and the solar plexus. So it is getting energy through everything, this to the solar. But after a few months or one year, she said she lost all her friends because they would invite her somewhere, everyone would be eating, everyone would be looking, and she would just be sitting there. Problem. Greed of the tongue. Everybody is eating, and this tongue always, again and again, begins to come; some kind of sliver in the mouth. So she gave up and began to eat. After 10–15 years, she died. So either we can get a training economy, we don't need any money, we don't have a kitchen, we don't have a microphone, a microwave, nothing. No shopping time, time for meditation. And the guest comes and says, "We are not ahārī, we are vihārī. We are only with energy." Yes, you will, your friend, the guest, comes twice: the first and the last. So please, now you see, nowadays the wheat that we are eating has a lot of gluten. And before 20, 30, 40 years, there were not so many problems, or people are blaming because of the gluten. There was not this kind of gluten. It means they've tried to force us towards the meat. And they don't tell what the most harmful things in the meat are. And eggs, and like this, and like this. Many people can't understand why not to eat meat. Now I was in Boston in America. Last week I was there, exactly today there. One was pushing me, "Come, please, and eat." Not meat, but the food they brought. It's pure vegetarian. Only salad and bread. But I said, I am going to an Indian restaurant to eat there. And this organizer said, "Please, Swamiji, come, come." He was pushing me with his hand. I said, "OK, I will sit down," but he held me so fast. So I have this sign here. You see, he was holding it like this. It's not painful, nothing, but the blood thinner. So it's a memory, beautiful. I was sitting like this in my t-shirt and telephoning, and Thāpur said, "What happened, Swāmījī, there?" I said, "Some little child bit me." Anyhow, they put some medicine on, and I said, "No, no, it's okay, no pain at all." Anyhow, well, I sit there, I didn't eat, I took the fruit. And I had 25 of my disciples with me from Europe and America. And one from a disciple who was from which one? And in the salad, there was a chicken. Oh God, she just threw it there. And another one said there was a black hair. That can happen, doesn't matter. I want to tell you, maybe it's her hair, your hair, but she had colored brown hair. That's my very dear disciple, many, many years, disciple, and she's the best friend of the Rāmānanda from America, who is now here, and our Divya Jyoti here from America, her good friend is a Gītā Purī. So you can ask Gītā Purī, I'm not telling a joke, okay? So I told the organizers, and they were so sorry, so sorry. So they said they brought the salad, and they told the shop they should be very careful. They mixed it and they took it. Boston is the city of the, how do you call, the city of learning, knowledge, what do you call, studies. And it has in Boston, only in Boston, 300 universities and like a thousand colleges, many, many hospitals, many, many research institutions. If you want them, they will buy you to make research from your whole bones and everything. So if you have enough from your life, you go there. And Boston is something like Budapest. But of course, you can't compare Budapest with Boston. Budapest is a thousand times beautiful. Budapest is a thousand times more beautiful. Anyhow, then there was a problem of eating. So we did our... Luckily we had one there, vegans. So again, with the eating. Now what to do? So in Europe, we still have many good things. For example, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, and these countries in the summer are growing a lot of good vegetables. But we have to do something about how to survive well. So here also, it would be good to make a little difference and not have everyday potatoes, but what we have to ask? Someone, the person who put the question, can tell us what to cook. Well, in Boston, we had this conference at Harvard University, and this person took me, "Come, please make a photo that we will see that Swamiji was in Harvard University." I said, "It doesn't matter for me. Harvard University and the nest of the bird are the same, yes." And this, our now, it is one of the most beautiful universities, but some people are meant for good things. I said, "I don't want to be studying now." Beginning to study there, even free, but they are making a lot of research. It's very good. There is nothing to say, but all this meat and meat and meat and meat and meat. There were many professors and doctors and deans and these men, they are also Indians. Many, many are researchers and scientists, and they are Indians there also, but their brain is also gone: meat, meat, meat. Some of them, they were still vegetarian, and they are making... Puja and everything, they were sitting beside me and this. There's one very, very good cancer diagnosis and cancer specialist doctor from India. He has hardly time; everywhere they are calling him, "This, this, that." And now he is so fed up. Now he has settled in Atlanta. So there are many doing, but I don't know what happened to the human brain. For the heart, we should see the heart. First, the heart and then the brain. And the first brain, and then the heart. So when you eat, food comes on your plate. When a chicken baby is killed, or a cow baby is killed, that chicken, when it comes on your plate, then your brain should tell you, then your heart will say no. How they are torturing this is the question. So now, our vegetables in Europe, we have many good vegetables, and we have good, in Europe, good energy and good air, good oxygen, really. This is our middle Europe, or this Europe. It is a place to live. We have many doctors and professors, and they are all very attuned toward nature. But these big, big markets have destroyed us. And the highways have disconnected the people. Otherwise, we go from Vape to the Budapest little, little villages, and there are some in Dubai and some in this and that, and you have some friends and so on. And with the highway, we don't know anybody, only the petrol pump. And what can you get there? Good Coca-Cola, and again, potato chips. So, in Europe, there are so many fruits and vegetables which we can preserve for the winter. And your ancestors were doing. They are like carrots, all the root fruits, all vegetables. And different kinds of pumpkins and the seeds. And so many things were preserved. People tell me that in Europe, meat was also not consumed that much. This meat began to be eaten more after the Second World War. First World War and Second World War. And there they created one name. And this name they created, high society. And what means the high society? Oh, they have money. They only drink alcohol and eat meat, and this other potato is nothing. And this is a high society. And everybody wants to eat meat. But they cannot, because it's very expensive, and now they make so much meat that it is cheaper than vegetables. So this is another reason that people are eating meat. So try dry fruits, dry vegetables. We have in India also a big problem, a big problem. Don't think that India is still holy. Yes, India is holy, very holy. And India is a spot on this earth that is very holy. But not the people. That's it. This college is very beautiful, very good. But now, who is here living and doing? That is different. And now, so the Indians, they are talking about a high society. Now, you people are not using the term, what is called here, this for dying, hanging up a tie? Tie, yes. This is a Croatian. Kravata is good, but the tie is not good. So all Indians and their schools, and everywhere, they have to have a tie. And our school in Europe, I see here, little children, they are not going with the tie. So I tell, also Indians, someone who has eaten and thrown it, that you are eating a vako. It is unbelievable, they are so blind. It's not that India, not that people. And at home, maybe parents don't want them to eat meat and this, so they just go for walking and they go to the meat restaurant. One of the biggest meat exporters is India. And I have heard they are breeding dogs and selling them into China. Therefore, don't pour dogs, okay? Because maybe what they are learning, see, on Facebook, maybe they begin in Hungary. Yes. Who knows? This is how the cancer is going. Therefore, please try to make your own dry fruits and vegetables. We can make from the good corns any kind of corn. We can make nice flowers, and we can make some different kinds of homemade things, and we can preserve them. Sometimes eat this, sometimes that. And in that Boston, all doctors said, "Don't eat any sugar. Sugar is one of the causes of the cancer." He is telling, "Yes, yes, Swami, you can talk as much as you like. All are listening, but when will this open the gate?" So It is our weakness. Humans have more weakness than any, and that is our eating. Even our house pets are spoiled because of our weakness. So again, we are coming not only to potatoes or something; we shall cook different things. And that's why I said that when we have big seminars in a small village in this time of the season, we can request the farmers, and because there is so much vegetable, they can't eat it, so they are feeding the pigs and eating the pigs. So maybe we get these vegetables. At the same time, I can tell you that those who came to India, you know, to Rajasthan, in Jada, we bought the Jada land. It is about 600 hectares, 600-700 hectares of land, and since the day when we bought the land, there are no more pesticides, and our trees... Bush is everything, so there is a different kind of vegetable we are using, drying, and this is only that vegetable which is still not sprayed. That is also in the forest bush. So last year we had this in Strelky, you remember, and people liked it. It was good, so this year I brought again for you something. I went for only one week to India, some work I had to do, and once they said, "Only take two dresses and your toothbrush, and that's all. Why do you need to carry your luggage?" Because I have an ashram in Delhi, I have an ashram in Vienna, I have an ashram in Jaipur, everywhere I have what I need. I said, "Okay," but then I was thinking. And can you imagine, I took two empty suitcases? Inside were the soya capsules. You make them for our homeopathic herbals, because they are made from soya and not from animals. And our Pushpī in Jādan, she's taking care of the beautiful garden with organic everything. So, there are so many. Half a kilo. So much, but half a kilo. So, I put it all in my two suitcases. And when they were visiting, they said, "Swamiji, so little." I said, "Yes, it's good." I'm bringing the air from Europe for India, the good clean air for New Delhi from Vienna. So, back I brought it, 60 kilos or more. And Mansa Devi was looking, so I said, Anyhow, I brought it, and we are now mixing it, and you can use it, have it. So, you create, please, yourself, your few months' good food. I don't know how, but you have to. And if you don't know, then I can tell you. You can, from the different grains, for example, the chick beans, what we call the chana, and that we can make a few different kinds of. Variety for food only from that, so like different things we can learn. And if you can get organic corn, then we can make three different kinds of varieties for food from this corn. So we have many, many from our Europe, from here, and you can. Have a different dish every day. At least you have ten different dishes, ten to fifteen. So, if you eat two kinds of variety twice a month, or let's say three times a month, that's not too much. That's healthy. Homemade, yourself. Buy the vegetables, dry the vegetables, clean everything. Dry vegetables are better than frozen, yes, and also you don't need to consume electricity for your freezing. So we have so many good beans here, really. Sometimes I'm wondering how much more variety of food there is here in Europe than in India. But we didn't learn. We forgot. And those, our grandmothers, died already. Otherwise, they would have told us. And the best herbs you have here in the forests of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, everywhere. There are some people who are collecting many different herbs, but we have forgotten. We have here some people. They are very good, and we can ask them to give us a right, and give us a piece of paper that we can collect, or someone can collect, and we can buy from that. But no, your tongue is spoiled towards the junk food, and that junk food is remaining in the body. Better not to eat anything for two days, but don't eat junk food. That is about it. So, thank you for this good question, and we will tell, there is one person called Beloved Master, so The weeds have more than 40% more gluten, and this damages our intestines and causes diseases. I spoiled your appetite. I hope today the potato is not cooked. In 1970, in 1978 or '80, between these two years, there was one person who developed one machine, and he said that when you cut the potatoes or other roots, they are crying. And so this machine they brought near the potato, and they had... Some kind of machine giving the resonance, like a crying, and a knife coming closer. Is that the vibration and sound like screaming? And when it's cutting, it's unbelievable how much these potatoes are crying, screaming. Next day, in Vienna, there's a beautiful Nash Market, and no one buys potatoes. It took a few months. Many, many people didn't want to buy the potatoes. The potato company was nearly bankrupt, so they made more advertising about potato chips and this and that. The same machine, you come near the plant, you go with a knife, it is making screaming. So it is said, maybe because it's a metal, so they made it like a knife from the wood and came to near the same sound. And then one came with a water can to the plant, and the plant was so happy because you are bringing the water. So that machine, they did not provide in any shop anymore. So everything in the life of our planet is called a living planet. So what to do? So someone who doesn't want to do all this, then take them from Sūrya Nārāyaṇa. There are many. There is one lady, one person nearby our āsana of our Rajasthan border of Gujarat and Rajasthan. There is a big temple of the Amba, Mother Amba, Devī, Śakti, and when the Śakti, she died—the story is very long, I will not tell you. So Shiva was very, very, very sad, because Shakti, that was the first, and Shiva from his creation. So when she got the information that Śakti died, Śiva was very, very sad. He took Shakti on his shoulder, and he disappeared into the universe for ages and ages. Now, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and all other Devas, Indras, all were very sad. Because without Śakti, nothing is there, and Śiva must come back. But he disappeared. How to bring Śiva back? That attachment of Śiva was so much. So even if Shiva has attachment, why do we not have? Okay, so be happy, enjoy. You have attachment, okay, but love is love. So Shiva loved the Shakti, so on his shoulder, in this space, Brahma—Brahma came to Vishnu and other many goddesses said, "Vishnu, please do something and bring the..." Shiva came back, and they asked what happened. Everyone said, "Well, Sati committed suicide, and Shiva took it and disappeared. Where is Shiva?" So he is in the Brahmaloka somewhere, please. Only because of the attachment of the Śakti, the Śiva cannot. He will not come down. Then Vishnu, his Sudarshan Chakra, and he sends his Sudarshan Chakra to the Shiva's. And he said to Chakras shaped Parvati's body in many pieces. Suddenly, Shiva will be free, and so Parvati, the Śakti's body, was shaped or cut by the Sudarśana Cakra into 52 pieces. And where the mother Shakti's body fell, everywhere that place we call Shakti Pīṭha. Shakti Pīṭha means the place or holy place. And so, in many, many different places, in mountains or somewhere, still people are worshipping. So, that place between Gujarat and Rajasthan nearby, there is a place called Ambā, the mother Ambā. And there, her heart fell down. And on that hill where mother Ambā's, mother Śakti's, heart is, there is a divine light. Many, many lights are there. And people are going and worshipping. If you want to see, we go and we will show you. We will show you that place where the Śakti heart was. Of course, we can't see, but holy light is there, worshipping. So there is one man. Was it Sadhu or whatever it is, and he got darśana. He is living somewhere in a cave down in the mountain. And he became as a śakti. Now he is dressing like a woman. He also has, I know, in his nose, what they call something that ladies are doing. Only ladies are doing, boys, you don't do, okay? Otherwise, they will take you to the Śakti. So, everything, she had all bangles and everything, and she was very thin. We don't know how old he is, but really he does not eat, drink, anything. For one month, they kept him in one room. There were cameras, scientists, everything, to see if he was eating or not, or drinking or not. Yes, that's right. So, she doesn't eat, she doesn't drink, and when there are festivals, she is dancing with them. And, of course, everyone worships her or him as holy. Also, she does not have stool; toilet, we can go and see. It is something that is called then, no more meat and alcohol and nothing. Ariyom trassat. So that within her is the heart of the śakti. So there are people like this still; there are already. The Mother Earth will not lose the seed, even many, many years there is no rain. The Mother Earth will preserve the seeds of these holy sands. So there are maybe in many, many other countries, I don't know. So that is about that, Śiva. And this is Shakti's power. Of course, I think you cannot go that close; you cannot touch. I have seen it only in the video. I have heard, and I was there, but I had no interest to go to her cave or there. I had no time, but now I think I should go and have a darśan. So, what should we do? Who would like to go? No, yes, yes, we don't know when she disappears. Disappear means die, or we don't know. And we don't know if she will be there. Or if she will appear, we will come. But when I come, she will come. She must come. Sure, she will come. So when I come and sit there, slowly, slowly, she will come. So this is Holy Mother, very divine. Divine, because that is called pure Śakti light. That is okay. So there are many, many. In the Himalayas, there are many people going. We have in Kathu Ashram a divine mother statue. That Shakti made the temple there in her name. And that is called Kāmīkṣā Devī, and so there is a body of her, the womb of the mother of Anya. Me Hari Om Namah Śivāya, Om Namah Śivāya, Namah Śivāya, Om Namah Śivāya, Om Namah Namah Śivāya, Om Namah Śivāya, Om Hara Hara Bholi, Namah Śivāya, Om Hara Bholi.
