Overview of practicing yoga

A lecture on the essence and practice of yoga in daily life.

"Yoga in Daily Life has eight steps and is very simple."

"Help is one of the best yogas... your soul, your life, your heart, and your body will bless you."

Swami Maheshwarananda (Swāmījī) delivers a talk on his global "Yoga in Daily Life" system. He clarifies the true meaning of Haṭha Yoga as the six purification techniques (ṣaṭkarma) and outlines the main paths: Karma Yoga (selfless service), Haṭha Yoga, Rāja Yoga, and Jñāna Yoga. He emphasizes daily practice, dedicating time for health and harmony, and explains specific techniques like Netī for sinus health.

Oh, bless us all, dear sisters and brothers. Welcome, and I wish you a happy, healthy, spiritual, and long life. The subject we have here in this round-the-world journey is the 50th journey. I began my journey in 1970, and this message of yoga is spreading. "Yoga in Daily Life" is across the whole globe—the message, the talks, the discussions, meditations, etc. Anywhere in the world, even on a small part of the ocean, you can see "Yoga in Daily Life" and Swāmījī TV. All different parts: America, Mexico, etc., Europe, India, Africa, and Australia. There are three channels, 24 hours, with my talks about yoga. So it is not that I'm giving some kind of business, but saying the yoga is free, everywhere free. When I came to Europe, people had no system of yoga. It was like, let's say, today's yoga class here: a few people came for three days, then they didn't come, then others came. So I did not know who was advanced and who was just new. I told them, "You don't have any system." At that time, I was also working, teaching yoga in the Soviet Union for 20 years—my teachings of yoga and their life there. We developed the system which is called "Yoga in Daily Life." Now, what means "Yoga in Daily Life"? Do you eat every day or not every day? Then why can you not practice every day? On that day, if you have no time for yoga, then also don't eat. Because you have no time on that day when you cannot practice, then don't eat. Tomorrow also, if you have no time, don't eat. So this is not a force; it is life. Our life has many different kinds of... nutrition is one, and those yogic exercises. "Yoga in Daily Life" has eight steps and is very simple. This is my fourth lecture here talking, and people thought I would give very difficult postures, but I let them lie down and relax for one hour. When they sat up, they said it was very hard, or was good, because simple exercises relaxed. You have to understand the person's, the student's conditions. The sister was sitting here, and I felt that she had some difficulty with her knees or hip joint. Why not understand? The master and disciple have to understand: yoga is the science of humans, and yoga is from the beginning of the creation by Śiva. So the author of yoga is Śiva, God Śiva. All these postures, which we have according to the real yoga of Śiva, are connected from human to all other creatures and even the vegetation. We have one posture called the tree posture. How is this tree staying there? How do these trees have balance? How happy these trees, etc. So there are 8.4 postures. That is all. Caurāsī āsanas. Only the exercises, prāṇāyāma, āsanas—āsanas means this exercise—only 84. And Śiva has given this. There are 8.4 million different creatures. I did not count. I have to believe it. If you don't believe me, then please count, and next time when I am coming, you should tell me, "Swāmījī, three was too much." I will take it. So something we have to accept. Now, our science, our knowledge, technologies, etc., and sports began; sport comes from yoga. Before, there was not. So there are different movements. There are many, many postures, and that's also what we take as yoga. But yoga has no competition. Yoga has no challenge. If someone is doing this, I don't agree. Yoga should not gain from your teacher that you are a teacher, and you should not gain the money from the students. But yes, this room is here, we have this here, electricity, this, that, house, everything. So we need something. There are different kinds of yoga, but in reality, only one yoga. And then we have the beginning: Karma Yoga. When you do some good for the people, the old people, poor people, or animals, or the birds—help or give someone something. When an elderly person is coming from shopping, the bag is a little bit heavy, so you help bring the person to the car, or near it, if it is close to the house. This is called Karma Yoga. Help, help, help. Help is one of the best yogas. And what happens? When you help someone, what will this person say? Thank you. Someone will not say thank you, and we should not expect that—"Oh, this person didn't say thank you." But your soul, your life, your heart, and your body will bless you. It will bless you. So, in the Bhagavad Gītā, it is said the best achievement through yoga is Karmayoga. Atha yoga anuśāsanam. Also, through this we can practice. Second, then comes the Haṭha Yoga. Now, in Western countries, in the beginning when yoga came, I don't know who told this name. They said, "Haṭha yoga means," now, these postures, what you are doing. And that is not Haṭha Yoga. When I go to Australia, they say Haṭha Yoga. When I go to Canada, America, Mexico, I teach Haṭha Yoga. I am going to Europe for Haṭha Yoga. They telephone, "Can you have Haṭha Yoga practice?" "Yes." And they are not doing Haṭha Yoga. Someone gave the wrong name, and they think these āsanas, prāṇāyāma, what you are doing here is Haṭha Yoga. This is not Haṭha Yoga. So Haṭha Yoga is the purification, and this is purification of the body. There are six techniques: Netī, Dhautī, Bastī, Naulī, Trāṭaka, and Kapālabhāti. Netī means cleaning the nose. You will have no headache. There are many people who have headaches very much. Every day, do the netī. There is a water pot, very nice, lukewarm, a little salt. You do it in the morning, and automatically the water will go through one nostril and come out the other nostril. It's a half litre or quarter litre of water. Go through, then take the other side also. Water should be warm and a little salt. It cleans so nicely. Whole day you will be so happy. Your eyesight will be developed. Having this, your teacher will tell you about this. I am not giving a whole lecture about this. Netī, dhautī, also once a week we shall drink warm water and vomit it in the morning. All this morning, so this channel, food channel, we are cleaning so that we have no acidity. There are some people who have a problem: you eat something and hear a throat burning here. And this is one of the best exercises: dhautī, netī, dhautī, bastī. And bastī is drinking. This is done four times a year, beginning and end of the season. It's like these four seasons, the four exercises. You drink water, one bucket of water, but your teacher will tell. You get, there's also warm water with the salt. Drink one glass of water. There are five exercises. Drink one glass. Exercises. Till five to six, seven glasses of water, you drink. Go to the toilet. It will not come, maybe. Come, drink one glass, practice exercise, go. Nothing came, doesn't matter. You come and do exercises, and the third time it goes. All this water out, the sixth glass, this and three glasses, two glasses coming, everything out. Come and practice, go. Come and practice, go. What happens? The water comes so clean, as clean water you drink. Everything is cleaned in the tenth time. Relax for one hour, and then it gives you a special diet. We call the moong, the green beans, and ghee, and your teacher will give you. Netī, dhotī, bastī, naulī. And naulī is one of the best exercises. You will have no disease. Disease is from the stomach. And that now only is so. Is there anybody who can demonstrate now only? Nobody. Okay. And that is also morning, empty stomach, going for toilet and so on. And then we hold it, bend a little forward, knees a little bent, and we look, and then stomach churning, moving right, left, like this, three times. And then, on the other side, it massages and is very good for our solar plexus, for our kidneys, our livers. Everything is purified in such a way that you are so light and happy, and you will not have any problem in your stomach. There is no cancer, no this, no that, everything. Purity, we are cleaning. And after, one is called trāṭaka, for the eyesight, for the concentration. And there is a candle burning. And here is a little candle. You look, gazing on the candle flame for one minute, close your eyes for two or three minutes, then again. And you will see, you will see the light in your forehead, the forehead wall behind. You will see the light. It will come, light and go. So beautiful concentration. You will be surprised how I see the light in me, here with closed eyes. Or, there are some little children who are already at the age of 5 years, or 4 to 6 years, or 7 years, or 8 years, still making bad weight. So, in the night, he makes urine. What is the best technique? We go to the doctor, we go to the psychologist, we are all doing that. I have only one technique, and that's my yogic technique. In one day, you can solve this problem. It's very easy, very easy, I tell you, and you can give it to anybody. Can you be domestic, please, if you have no problem with your children? Or this, but if someone has, you can do something. Other messages will come. They will come. Sit down. I told you, and it will come. That's called Siddhi. Yeah, Mahāsaya. Yeah. So, or you do this trāṭaka with a candle flame, and the child should sit here and look at the candle flame for one minute, and then close their eyes. Again, open one, then again. It was in the table where we made a mantra dīkṣā. So this is that it will not be a problem with weight, making the toilet. Okay, thank you. You see, it is a miracle. My thumb moves, and comes the light. Wow. So when the child is there, you saw this look like that's all gone. This problem is gone. This light is really... you just do like this, finish. You go sleeping, morning the bed will be dry. Maybe a miracle, or may not be a miracle, but it has yes. And if you are an old man or another one, that is a different thing than taking the netī. That is another thing. Well, ṣaṭkarma yoga: netī, dhautī, bastī, naulī, trāṭaka and kapālabhātī. This is one of the best. I told you one with the cleaning of the nose. The other one is prāṇāyāma, and that is kapālabhāti. Kapāl is this forehead. Dhauti means purifying, cleaning. And many people have headaches from time to time, very bad headaches, very. And mostly women also say headache or half-side headache. There is a yoga mantra, and through this mantra, a headache will go, but it will come again. So that mantra is, I will not give you that mantra because you will not follow the principle. So kapāla is our forehead, this all. And cleaning, coming to the nose, through the nose. And it's going also through into the center of the eyebrows. And this is called kapāla-bhakti-prāṇāyāma. And that is just like this. Yes? You need not inhale. You have such a big tank of oxygen that goes by itself. So when you do the netī, then water remains somewhere here, in the, what we call the... sinuses. Sinuses. So, therefore, after that, we have to do this program so that all water comes out; otherwise, you will have a headache again. And so, Kapālavāti, keep your one hand on the stomach near the navel, and don't move your shoulders up and down like this. Only here, not like this, not like this. If— You do every day, let's say three times, fifteen times like this, fifteen times. And the next three times, your headache will be gone, well in the salty ocean. No more problem. This is called Haṭha Yoga. Haṭha yoga is very powerful. But what you are doing here, people, Haṭha Yoga, you don't know what Haṭha Yoga is. But I tell you so many times, every time I'm so angry. Now I say to myself, "Do not be angry." But when they say, "Can you teach us Haṭha Yoga?" I said no, because that is Rāja Yoga. So now it comes to Rāja Yoga. So, Karmayoga, then the Haṭha Yoga, then Rājayoga. And Rājayoga has eight steps, and that is mostly what people are saying in the world, it's called the Aṣṭāṅga Yoga. Okay, that is a normal name. Aṣṭāṅga Yoga means the eight steps: Netī, Dhautī, in our Haṭha Yoga. And in Rāja Yoga are Yama, Niyama, Āsana, Pratyāhāra, Dhāraṇā, Dhyāna, and Samādhi. That time you get samādhi, your ātmā you get, yeah. But you have to learn from the master. I have one very, very nice friend sitting here. He came. Can you give me a mantra? I said, "Okay, I will give." But he said, "Then I will not come anymore. Give me a mantra." I said, okay. Is it like a chocolate? You eat it, and are you digested? So, we have to have a connection with the master. Raja Yoga, this is very, very powerful. And very much discipline. Yama and Niyama, these are two principles. They have ten principles. And from these ten, it is very hard to master them ourselves. I will tell you perhaps next time the whole subject. Neti, Dhauti, Basti, Nauli, Trāṭaka, Kapālabhāti are called Haṭha Yoga. Now, Haṭha Yoga concentration is coming here on the eyebrow centre and the left nostril and right nostril. So, Ha, the Ha principle is the right side of this nostril. And that is from the right nostril coming in. So, Ha and Tha becomes Haṭha. And coming together, balance yoga. So, this is a... where is that one? It must be also here somewhere. Come on. Very beautiful things. You have some beautiful things here. But not that way I want, yes. This is the Haṭha Yoga. Hatha, and the third eye, opening of the third eye. Everybody said the third eye will open. And so this is in this, but that is Haṭha Yoga. Then the Haṭha Yoga story is beautiful. I will tell you why sometimes. So, Haṭha yoga. H, left. Th, right. H, th. Comes together, then becomes yoga. Haṭha yoga. Yoga means union. Yoga means union. And this is then in Haṭha Yoga that you can develop, so Rāja, the Rāja Yoga. Yama, Niyama, Āsana. Now you are practicing here exercises called Āsana. Then I accept. I accept completely. So, but yama and niyama, if you want to get divine knowledge, the supreme consciousness, then you have to go to Rājayoga. And yama and niyama, these two principles are very difficult, very difficult. There is nothing physical, no physical. But the principle of your body, your mind, your thoughts, everything is to balance and control, to control. And we cannot control so much sometimes. And the fourth part of the yoga we have is called the Jñāna Yoga. And jñāna means the knowledge. And in Jñāna Yoga, there are eight principles also. No, four, excuse me, sorry. And Jñāna Yoga has four principles: Viveka, Vairāgya, and Satsampatti, and Mumukṣutva. These are the final states of a yogī, what one wants to do. So we must not be only spiritual, but our physical, our mental, our social—it's all we need in very nice principles. So, this is yoga, what we have got. Besides these four principles of yoga—Haṭha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Rāja Yoga, and Jñāna Yoga—besides that, there is the yoga of the yoga of the rāja, and that's called Kuṇḍalinī and Chakra. Kuṇḍalinī and chakras. And here are these chakras. And there is the dormant power, capacities, spirituality, etc. of the human is in these chakras. There are different chakras. This one is called Svādhiṣṭhāna cakra. Today I was talking about this. It was very powerful. This is Svādhiṣṭhāna cakra, and there is a crocodile. Now, crocodile means that is the behavior of our body. It is that quality in a particular part of our body, anywhere in the chakra, there is that human's hidden power in the human. So, what I call the hidden powers in humans—I think this book is called, yes—if you want to know, then you should have this book: "Hidden Powers in Humans: Chakras and Kuṇḍalinī." It is a great, great book. People are searching for this. This is what it is. So these chakras, now another point, 8.4 million different creatures are, it's called Jalchar, Thalchar, and Nabachar. The creatures in the water, the creatures on and under the earth, and the creatures flying in the space. These are the three different kinds of creatures, and from them, 8.4 million. One is the human. It doesn't matter if it is Māori or Africans or Mexicans or Asians or Europeans. Human is a human. We are all that. There is no divide. And we are only one out of 8.4 million. And from these four million, one tiny creature is here. We are human, not so much. We are, we think, there's too many humans, but humans consume too much. We are greedy, we are collecting, we have, but still, every creature has its principles. They will eat once, and they will not carry on. The head on the back, they will go again when they are hungry. God will give it. So it is said, the tiny ant and the big elephant, it is God who is feeding all of them. O man, who are you that you can feed them? Still, you are not capable of feeding thyself. Your stomach is all the time empty, all the time empty. O man, understand what this is. Then we have that, if you believe, then the human life is there to become one with the supreme. Otherwise, all is indifferent. This is the difference between the questions and yoga practice. I didn't want to take only one point, one chakra. But I will give you today a little glimpse of the chakra's video, and we will see that. So, my dear, yoga is the science. Yoga is our life. And if we want to become healthy, then we shall practice yoga. Then we can take a medicine from the doctor, the chemical. And the chemicals and our body is organic. Our body is nature, Prakṛti. Nature does not accept medical chemistry. But if you take Āyurveda medicine, that will be accepted by our body because it is natural. But the allopathic medicine we should not deny, because sometimes it is very important for us. It can save our life, so we have to bring both together. So this is our part of our life, and we have to, if we have to live happy, healthy, if we are happy, then we are healthy. And when we are healthy, that is the wealth. What means wealthy? The best body. Everything will come to us. So, yoga, you should practice at least one and a half hours. And you said, "I have no time, Swamiji. I would like to practice yoga, but I have no time." But today I give you time. I give you three more hours, but out of three, I give you one and a half hours. Easily, so much time I give you. So we have 24 hours per day and night. Let's go to the work. Are you working eight hours continuously? No, but we are occupied for 11 hours. And one hour for going and coming, both times. 11 hours. And one hour for shopping. Are you shopping every day? But I give you, so this is 10 hours. Now, 8 hours sleeping. Who is such a luckiest of the luckiest person that sleeps deep 8 hours? Maybe our children sleep, but now hardly we can sleep 6 hours. There are so many of these things, but still, I give you 8 hours for your sleeping, so 18, and now 8 hours still left. So, one hour for cooking, six hours. So, one hour for your cooking and cleaning. How much left now? Five hours. Okay, five. One hour with your wife and with your children and talking at... This now, rest of the time, what are you doing? So you can do something more for newspaper or televisions, or now we have this in the hand, etc. So can you take easily two hours? And if not, then one and a half. Now this hour, one and a... Half an hour you will steal it from someone, or someone will steal from you. When you come to your kitchen with a coffee cup, it is gone. One and a half hours are gone, or coming and sitting at the table for eating. It's gone. So what do we need? Early morning learning. Let's get up earlier. Go to the bathroom, toilet, and peacefully do your exercise, and then at breakfast with children, with a partner, and if the partner is practicing with you, you are the luckiest, happiest. Who is the happiest woman whose husband practices yoga with her, or who is the luckiest man that has such a good wife to practice yoga with him? There is harmony. So one and a half hours, if you... Practice yoga definitely, definitely. In one year, now from tomorrow, one and a half hour you begin. All your business, everywhere, you have enough time. You have car, this, swimming, everything. One and a half hour, get up earlier. Early to rise. Early to bed, early to bed. Early to rise, be happy, healthy, and blessed. So morning exercise, after you forget it, telephone comes, this comes, that comes, mummy, puppy, mummy, hello, everything, this, all is gone. Morning, the best is the morning. So he said, early morning, the bird gets the ripe cherry, not the worm, cherry. Why the poor worm? I let them to kill. So the early bird gets the ripe cherry. Everything we have, yoga is something really great, great. There is everything: there is spiritual, there is meditation, etc. But at least for our body, for our health, we should do it. So, yoga, this center is for you, and practice, practice. In one year, if God brings me again to New Zealand, bring me one flower and say, "Swamiji, my life is completely changed." But practice every day. For fifteen days, you will be lazy. This or that. After 15 days, you know, how will it wake you up? Like a dog, morning, early morning, go out with the ball. No, your dog needs you, you are sleeping, but the dog is making sound, so you know that you have to go out. Similarly, your body will tell, "I need my exercises." I need my body exercises, and you will do it. You will do it. So after 15 days, the habit, the habit is the best. So I did not take this subject of this chakra, this crocodile chakra. And there are many, many principles inside. And there are many people who came the first time, so I quit this.
