The Eternal Dharma and the Legacy of Alak Purī

A satsang discourse on the eternal dharma, spiritual lineage, and parables.

"Sanātana Dharma is not one person's religion. Sanātana is not only from the humans. It is everything: the trees, the animals, the entire balance of our earth—harmony, understanding, and creation."

"Human consciousness and the human mind are always changing. But we have to go to the very ancient roots, to the roots of our spirituality, which we have come back to, which is from the Satya Yuga."

The lecturer addresses the community in a newly established ashram, blessing its beginnings. He speaks on the timeless nature of Sanatana Dharma, the spiritual history of the location, and the lineage from Alak Purī through Devpurī to the present. He shares a lengthy parable about a merchant's son misinterpreting his father's testament to illustrate the need for wisdom over literal understanding, and recounts stories connecting the Alaknanda River, the Himalayas, and figures like Vedavyasa and Shiva to this spiritual heritage.

Satguru Swāmījī Mahādev kī Devādidev, Deveśwar Mahādev, Ārādya Bhagavān Siddip Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī kī, Satguru Swāmījī Madhavānanjī Gurudev kī, Satya Sanātana Dharma kī Jai. Blessings to all the sisters and brothers. Brothers, I am very surprised and very happy that you managed to have this ashram here. I was thinking this is the space where Sāvitrī was teaching, but you are above that level. Even in Maribor, there is no hall as big as this. This was a monastery, and definitely there were many different activities here in the name of Jesus and his mother Maria, so there was the name of God and prayer. We see situations are changing, but the building remains. So again, here is a spiritual activity. I don't know what kind of activities were in these buildings; there were many different changes, just as our life is also changing. Now you are here with a very pure heart and mind, and yoga in daily life has begun in this place, in this city, with many of our bhaktas from here, supported by a strong, solid pillar—our brother Vasiṣṭha. One of our bhaktas from Maribor has, unfortunately, passed away. That time was one country, and it is the one that is multiplying. From one country, many countries became. From one couple, many children came. So this part of that country, which we are now again calling Slovenia. In Slovenia, I don't know, but I think history says who pulled you out from your country: the Italians, the Austrians, the other side, the Hungarians a little bit. But I pray and I think that the Europeans are uniting, that all are one in their countries and one in what we call the European Union. It is good that you are free in business and free to go anywhere to work. It is your nation, and it becomes the union of this Europe. There is one called America, and there are many, many states within America. But I think in Europe and the Union, there will be more countries. They call it America, but America is not only the America you think of; it is also Mexico and further. All this is known as America, so it is one part. Similarly, the European Union also still has people who were close to our part of Europe, and it has become more neutral, with freedom for every religion and every culture. We pray that it will remain in harmony, peace, and understanding. Things are changing, but we are here, we are going, we are coming. In this way, the yoga, the science of yoga, the spirituality of yoga, the Sanātana Dharma, has also now again come here. Because Sanātana Dharma is not one person's religion. Sanātana is not only from the humans. It is everything: the trees, the animals, the entire balance of our earth—harmony, understanding, and creation. So you are lucky that you have this ashram here, very near to the Adriatic coast. It is a beautiful and very good atmosphere, and the environment is very good. When a good thing exists, everyone wants to take it away. But you have your country, and you have many other friends from other countries, and it is in peace and harmony. Human consciousness and the human mind are always changing. But we have to go to the very ancient roots, to the roots of our spirituality, which we have come back to, which is from the Satya Yuga. Mahāprabhujī has written in his bhajans many times, but not very clearly. The poet is not very clear, but the wise one knows what is meant in the poem. So, who will understand, will understand. The other one will go away or will misunderstand. There is one story that came to mind. I hope I will not take too long. There was a very rich person, let us say Vasiṣṭha. In every aspect, he is great, but he is not a businessman. He will get and he will give. So I have to see somebody else. I got one, but I have no child, so I have to get somebody else now. Okay, it was a merchant, a very rich merchant, and he had one son. You know, in every country, the son is the head of the family. Daughters, the girls or women, are just for giving the child and doing some work: eating, washing the laundry, and praying. We know that there were many times of discrimination towards women. Women were not allowed to vote in elections because they are not—I don't want to say what word it is. And you know, when this was stopped, they began to get the voting right. Which country was last? Switzerland. What about France? It was first, not latest. Good. So you are lucky that you were long ago, but in Indian culture, the first is the woman. The Upanishad said, "Mātṛ devo bhava." The first is woman. The first God is woman. But I will not go further in this way. Now, these women in India are suffering, but still, they don't think they are suffering. Well, that merchant was very clever and very rich, and he had only one son. The father was very disciplined, very strict, and very humble—I think something like Lakṣmaṇ Purī, very serious, very strict, very clear in everything. When he makes them, he cuts the watermelon on one side: half this side and half that side. In the Kailāsh āśram, there are mostly these warriors, fighting with everything, but they were afraid of Lakṣmaṇ Purī. They called him the king of these villages, but in the right way. Anyhow, that father had one son, and the son was not like the father. So the father writes a letter, a testament for his son: "My dear son, number one: eat the best eating, good eating. Number two: don't go in the sun walking, because for us the sun is too strong, and you are happy if the sun is coming. So always walk in the shadow. Third: have a good heart for people. If someone comes and asks you for some loan, give the loan. But don't ask for it back; they will come and they will give." So the people were running, coming, taking. Well, then the last two points more: when you have no more money or something, then you have a fifth of the 15,000 tons of gold. And when you have nothing, no money, then it is in the tower of the Śiva Mandir. And the last point: if you can't understand or do something, then please go to my friend. He's a paṇḍit, a very nice one, and ask him what to do. What a good father. The father died, and the son looked at the testament. "My dear son, eat always the best of the best menus." So he was calling food sometimes from France, the next day from America, from airplanes, always the best and good food. He lost a lot of money. Second, he said, "Walk in the shadow." So what did he do? He put, like, a plastic or something, a roof covering the whole street from the—like our tent—very, very long walk. Some people didn't want it, so he paid them money. He lost money. Then he wrote, "Anyone who needs money, please, you can come and take from me. I will not ask you again. Give me honestly; you should give money back." So there was a big satsaṅg. Two thousand people were there, and when they heard this, they left the satsaṅg and all were running there. Only one man was left. Would you run because money is coming? He lost a very big amount. So he went to the Śiva temple, and in the tower of the Śiva temple, where the thousand tons of the gold was supposed to be, he demolished it, broke it. What was inside? Dust, dirt, pride, spider webs—nothing else. He was sitting and saying, "Oh, my father, oh, my father, why are you so cruel to me? I was naughty, but I was not so bad to you. Oh, father, why did you not kill me?" And no one came to him. So, last, last, he went to the paṇḍit. He went crying, "Boy, Paṇḍitjī, you are like my father, and my father was the best friend of you, and he said that you will help me. This is the test of men." Here he said, "Okay, sit down, my son. Have some nice cold water, drink some orange juice, calm down." And he was reading. "Oh, such a wise father," this man said. "Tell me what 'good' means." "Yes, my son"—we call every child a son—"'Eat good food, the best of the best,' he said. I did so." "What did you eat?" "Because father said to bring food from India, from China, from there, from there." "No, the best food, the best food is that when you are very hungry, then whatever you eat is tasteful. Not always eat these, and these are there. It is junk food, so you will be ill. You lost the money. This I did not think, then do now. Begin to eat like this: morning a breakfast, and lunch at one o'clock, and dinner at 7 o'clock. Between, only water." "Do you eat something outside in between?" That boy, the paṇḍit said. "Oh, many things: ice creams, the bed, and pumpkin, many, many things." "That's why you lost money," he said. "Thank you, but why? He said that I should go in shadow. I lost so much money with the tents putting, and some people didn't want. I gave them millions of rupees when they said, 'Are you stupid?' Your father was telling you right, but I didn't even... It was very cold, I was going in the shadow." He said, "Father did not mean this." "Then how, how to go?" He said, "It means get up early morning and before sunrise, go to your office. Always in shadow, and when the sun sets, come home. Why were you going to so many restaurants and here and there, and so on? Stay in your office on that one chair." This I didn't understand. "Yes, the shadow before sun and after sun, okay, understand. I was stupid, but how can he right there? 'You can have money, take it long, you, and I will not ask you to give me back.' Oh, the father was such a clever merchant." At that time, it was a different system, and now we have the bank system. So he said, "Do you want the money? How much do you want? Five thousand euros? Five thousand? Then take from this person land, or the house, or the gold, etc. You, in my Kachari, so you get 100,000, but give me here for 500,000? Automatically, they will come back and give you the money." He said, "Oh God, I did not know. Okay, everything I understand, but oh, my father, my grandfather, by my father, lie 15,000 tons of gold in the tower of the temple, and when you want to take, only there's a... one day, on the 15th of August at 11 o'clock, you can get this gold, otherwise not. How do you mean?" He said, "Father, I break everything. There was no gold anywhere, not for one thing." "Okay, I give you money, and follow all principles, and the gold is there, and I... one day, I will give you the gold. Be happy. I give you the money, and work well for one month, two months, three months, four months, five months, six months, seven months." Paṇḍitjī didn't call him, and this young boy is getting nervous and nervous. On the 15th of August, on my birthday, Paṇḍitjī said, "Come, we go to the Śiva temple for prayer." So they were there at eight o'clock, doing pūjā for Śiva, chanting mantras. Sitting there, talking how beautiful it is and so on, and the boy thought, "I think he will bring me gold." I thought I came in at 11 o'clock exactly. So, Paṇḍitjī said, "Let's, my son, we go." "Where is gold?" "Gold is in its place." Okay, so he was going down step by step. There were 15 steps. Paṇḍitjī said, "Stop, bring me a tool," and he opened the stone of the step. Gold. Cover it, put the stone back. "I show you the gold, 12,000, 15,000 tons of gold. You can look at everything. This is that. Come to the pūjā alone, to Śiva, and open on this day, otherwise you will not get." "But Gurujī, what does the meaning of the 15th of August mean?" "Because Swamiji was born." "Who and where?" "That's no problem. You build the temple again, and I will give you the money. Same size, same height, everything." Then he said, "Next 15th of August," and he went with it. It's very gold. Still, you didn't get knowledge. Let's walk down. And on the 15th step, there was the shadow of the sun from the peak of the mountain; that shadow was on the 15th step. So the shadow was there, and on this day, the sun is always moving. But on that date, that month, that time, the light, the shadow of the peak of the tower is on the sun. Understand or not? Go to the 15th step, do not break. There is another step. So, my dear, it is that: how, in which way, we are going, and we can get it. So that is in that brain, not on the computer. A computer cannot be quicker than the brain. A computer cannot be quicker than the mind. So in that way, Satya Yuga. And in Satya Yuga, where Śiva, that time was a great saint, also had a quality of Śiva. And that was Alak Purī. Alak means indescribable. And so there are our Alak Purījīs, and we found Devpurījī, and all the siddhis and all the powers of the Alak Purījī, the Devpurījī got this. So many, many places Devpurījī could go through the rock. He could walk in the air, and, you know, after 13 years, our Dr. Shantanti was traveling and traveling, searching, "Where is the cave of Alak Purījī and Dev Purījī?" And so she got it. And now, three times I went there. It's power, energy. And so, Alak Purījī cave is at 3,650 meters altitude, but where the tapasyā of the Devapurījīs? Round approximately 5,000 meters, and there, where the Pāṇḍavas went, that's called the Swarg Rohini. The Pāṇḍavas were there. We have here someone who went to Devpurījī's gufā. Stand up. Who was it? Stand up. Are you? You didn't go? You didn't? I went to Devpurījī, no, okay, thank you, thank you, and to Alakpurījī's gufā, cave, okay, thank you. Now, in this ancient literature there is written Alakpurījī's glaciers, they call Alakpurī. Now, there is coming from this glacier a river, so one is Lakṣmī River. It merged into the Alaknandā. And there's another river coming, merged into the Alaknandā. And further when we come, there is a coming Saraswatī River which goes underground, so nearby Badrināth, and it's called Bhīmpul, Bhīmpul. The Bhīma, Bhīma was the strongest man from the Pāṇḍavas, like a Vasiṣṭha. And that's why his back is a problem now. There is a story, I'm telling you a short one, from the time of the Mahābhārata, with Vedavyāsa. So Vedavyāsa wanted to write the Vedas, called Śruti and Smṛti—listening and giving further. But Vedavyāsa said in Kali Yuga they will all forget it, lost it. Their memory will not be that, so can you raise your hand up? Who can remember 65 telephone numbers by heart? So how can you hold the Vedas? You cannot. Therefore, Ved Vyāsa wanted to write the Vedas. His thoughts were too quick, so he asked—he wanted someone to write it. "I will speak, and he will write," but no one can do so quickly. Even the computer will not go so quickly. So Bhagavān Gaṇeśa came, and Gaṇeśa said to Vyāsa, "I will write." So Ved Vyāsa said, "Promise?" "Yes." "Will you do it?" "I will." "Will you follow me? I will. Okay, don't ask me again. What did you say? I'm writing, and you are already writing. Don't say, 'Can you tell me once more?' It is finished." Gaṇeśa said, "Okay." And we know the highest mind and the best is the Gaṇeśa. That's why we are worshipping Gaṇeśa. Then Gaṇeśa said, "I also have a promise. If you stop to think for five seconds, then I will not write anymore. You speak the Vedas, I will write." "Yes, yes." One day, what happens? The pencil broke. They were all always that was from some wood or coal, nothing was there. And Vedavyāsa is talking, so Gaṇeśa immediately took out his tooth and with the ink begins to write. So you will see: Gaṇeśa's statue has one tooth that is complete and one that is broken, so the left one was broken. In the evening, they meet together. Gaṇeśjī said, "It can happen that some letter is wrong." Vedavyāsa said, "What?" "Yes, Gurudev." "Who said?" "Gaṇeśa." "Why Gaṇeśa? What is the problem?" "The sound of the river of Sarasvatī." Vedavyāsa said, "Okay, this also I have solved the problem." Ved Vyāsa said, "Where are you? Just go underground." And it comes out in Ilahabad in Kumbh Melā. Now, this river is flowing, and after this Bhīmpul or somewhere, the Saraswatī River is coming. And the whole water, as it is, goes down. You can't go and see it still now. So, who has seen this river? They all saw that Saraswati just went down. In the whole Himalayas, there is only one rock, one little rock, and it is like books on it. You can see that, and it is about 100 meters distance or 200 meters distance between Gaṇeśa and Vyāsa. They are making what we call, like, a mental telepathy. This you can see really in reality. You can go and see. Another is a story, a little, very... The Ālakpurījī's, there was his disciple, many disciples, and one was... Devī, a very great, and she was, yeah, and she was going with the cows. And one day comes the tiger, a big tiger, and he wants to kill one cow. That Devī, her name Nanda Devī, she became the cow, went in the front and said, "She's talking. I know that you will eat me, and I'm here. You can eat me, but I have two promises to know. Here, where you killed me, here must be my temple, and my name should be in my Gurujī's river." So Alaknandā, Nandā Devī, so this river is called the Alaknandā River. Well, when she said this, the tiger turned into what we call the Dharmarāja. Dharmarāja is the master or the god of dharma, the truth. Then, because the tiger, he became again Dharmarāj and said, "Devī, I was only testing you. But, oh mother, oh mother, whenever you go, we will make you a temple here." That time also, the temple of Nanda Devī written in the scriptures is not a joke, is not a fairy tale. So when the Shakti died from Shiva, then Shiva was again alone. Alone. Pārvatī is born. Then is born the Gaṅgā and Pārvatī. So Gaṅgā came after. This river is called Alaknanda, Alaknanda, and the other is Bhagīrathī. When two merge into one, the place is called Devaprayāg. Then remains the Gaṅgā, so there are many stories. Now Gaṅgā Devī became holy; it was a holy... and Ālakpurījī gave her blessings. Now Pārvatī, when she was grown, she wanted to marry Śiva. And Śiva is the king of the Himālaya. Now, all who are dying in the temples like this, they are Himālaya. It is called the Śiva. All kings serve, so Bhagavān Śiva was on the... But the Buddhists, they killed the king of the Kailāśa. They destroyed the temple. Then what do you call the Tibetans and Buddhists? So it is the fortieth Lama, and before that was Śiva King. But this Buddhist is not a complete Buddhist; there are many, many other Buddhists. So, what you call this Buddhist, Dalai Lama, it's only one part of the Buddhist. So he gave once, he said that I am not the head of the Buddhists. It is said that Buddhists killed the Śaṅkarācārya. Let stories go, leave it. Now Pārvatī wanted to marry, so she went to the forest in the Himālaya, and she made a temple there of Nanda Devī. Then she went to the Śivaliṅga, and she adorned him. And Pārvatī is born to marry Śiva. It's a long story. But then Śiva accepted Pārvatī to marry. So these are the stories of our Ālak Purījī. So it means that, you know, now when we are disciples of Devpurījī, Alakpurījī, and Gurujī, then we are connected to that Śiva and to that Alak Nanda. Thanks to Dr. Shanti, and then I went in the temple and everywhere, that is written in all the scriptures. So that is our Alak Purījī. From the Ālak Purījī, Devpurījī. And after Devpurījī, Dīppurījī. And then Mādhāvānanda Purī. And now we are all Purīs. Our, our, so it is not a joke, it is not only a story, but it is the reality. You can see two, three times, Dr. Shanti had a vision, and two, three times I had a vision. There is one temple on a mountain. In the morning, when the sun rises, it is all like gold. And Nīlakaṇṭha also, in the morning, is completely like real gold. So in the Himalayas, many, many places are like this. This is the sunlight, morning, rising sun. So if you don't see Alakpurījī's darśan once, you will be lost. So, try to come. And so, you were asking me many, many times. So I would tell you the name of this ashram: Alak Purījī Ashram. That's it. And there is a story you may have in your library somewhere, maybe, or in England, in London, or in America somewhere, in India, in many books. It's called Kālidāsa. Kavi Kālidāsa, 2,300 years ago, and his story is very long, beautiful, and where he talks about Alakāpurī, there is one book called Meghadūta. Megh is clouds, and Dūt is ambassador, giving the message through the clouds, and Alakāpurī is known as the capital of the Alakāpurī Glacier. So, and Kuber mountain is there. So, Kubera was the brother of the Rākṣasa, the, what is, Rāvaṇa. And he took the crown of his brother and ran away. Alakpurījī gave him that place. So also Kubera. Kubera then gave the place. And Kubera is the treasurer of God. So that is the mountain called Kailāsa, the Kubera mountain. Anar and Nārāyaṇ, there are two mountains in that part where Alakpurī is. Unbelievable how much energy and what it is, but you should open your heart. This year we are going again in the beginning of November and September, sorry, September and October. Last year, there were 300 people. Maybe we will try to get it to three, we will try for 300 people. The government doesn't want it, but we are, and also the tourist guides, they also want to have little days. So I said, "Okay, don't worry, to be little," but I took it more, so they have different, and you are welcome. I don't know. Maybe I will come this time, and then I'm physically not fit. I don't know how I will do it. I think I will come again. I am not physically strong enough.
