The Essence of Guru Pūrṇimā

A discourse on the essence of Guru Pūrṇimā and the guru principle.

"Guru Brahmā, Guru Viṣṇu, Guru Devo Maheśvara. Guru Sākṣāt, the one who is that truly? Parabrahma."

"Dhyāna Mūlaṁ Guru Mūrtiḥ, Pūjā Mūlaṁ Guru Pādam. Mantra Mūlaṁ Guru Vākya, Mokṣa Mūlaṁ Guru Kṛpā."

Swami Ji delivers a satsang explaining the true meaning of the guru, emphasizing that worship should be daily, not confined to a single day. He teaches that the only true meditation is on the form of the Gurudeva and that the guru principle is omnipresent, found in every teacher and aspect of life, from parents to nature. He illustrates this with stories from the Rāmāyaṇa and about Dattātreya, who learned from a snake and a girl cooking, and discusses the importance of the guru's word (Guruvākya) and the sanctity of the spiritual lineage (paramparā).

Allāk Purījī Mahādev, Devādhi Dev, Deveśvara Mahādev, Satguru Swāmījī, Vajwanājī Bhagavān, Satyasanātana, Paramātmā. Jai, Jai... unto the very last days. Therefore, we can worship at all times, or on the day when you have time. Secondly, it is not only that we should worship on Guru Pūrṇimā, but every day. It is said: "Guru Brahmā, Guru Viṣṇu, Guru Devo Maheśvara." All this—Guru Brahmā, Guru Viṣṇu, the Brahmā, the Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara—are Śiva. So, Guru Brahmā, Guru Viṣṇu, Guru Devo Maheśvara, Guru Sākṣāt, the one who is that truly? Parabrahma, that Brahman in the highest, Parameśvara, above all elements and everything, that is the Guru. Therefore, it is said: "Dhyāna Mūlaṁ Guru Mūrtiḥ." We shall worship the form of the Gurudev. You can also make a picture, a statue, whatever, but we should have one object in front of us so that it remains in our cakṣu, in our eyes, at all times. So, regarding meditation, there are many, many meditations. Everyone, when you close your eyes, you say, "We are doing meditation." Yes, it is good. But mostly, people are concentrating as a meditation on external objects. Perhaps a star, the moon, the sun, flowers, a lake, or a sunrise, etc. It is good, but that is not meditation. What are you searching for there? We can only find what we want to find. In reality, it is our own Ātmā. That is the Guru principle. Many, many of us are doing meditations; everyone is struggling, and people like it very much. So there is passive meditation, and there is also external meditation, etc., many, many kinds, but this is just struggling. The only true meditation is on the form of the Gurudeva. And therefore, it is said: worship the holy feet of Gurudev. A few days before, I explained that. It is a very beautiful story in the Rāmāyaṇa, about Guru Nakamani. It is a long story about that. Why? We worship with water, and that Master Guru also then gives blessings through this water. That is a very, very famous story, you know, especially in Christianity. Jesus was blessed in the river. And everywhere you are, in the church mostly, they had a water pond, and they put a little child in and out. Then they have the water at the door of the church, so everyone takes the water out of the tillock or in the mouth. After that, the priest sends water for everyone. So the water ceremony is very, very much present in the guru paramparā of Sanātana Dharma. And that is also in Christianity. The difference is this: Christianity is only a few thousand years old, but Sanātana Dharma is Ādi and Ādi. There were no other religions. In Kali Yuga, then all these different religions came forth. And that is good because Sanātana Dharma gives everyone freedom. You worship your mother or your father, your uncle or your auntie, or your tree or your dog. Yes, there are dog ceremonies. Not only can we not worship? That worship which the Christians are doing is the Westerners'. But we worship the cat also. You know, the cat is what we call the śakti’s tiger, or the lion. You know, all śaktis are standing on that. So this is the generation of the cats and dogs and tigers, and this is what we call the cat generations. So we worship the river, we worship the snake, we worship the vegetation, the powder, or the fruits, and this of the bush. Many, many bushes, and we are receiving the sunrise, the new moon, and that new moon is the ornament of Śiva. Śiva has on his head the beautiful new moon, the crescent moon. We worship the sun because the sun is a light. So we worship the light. That is very important. And we worship the earth. Yes, before people go to harvest something, they first pray to Mother Earth. Yes, that is very, very important. And then this Mother gives us all food and everything, all different kinds of grains, so the earth is also mother. Yes, and the sun, light is the father. Without this light, nothing will grow. So if the sun did not come out for, let us say, ten days at all, if it were completely dark for ten days, half of the generation would die. So that is the sun. So do not think that God is only the sun. Everything is God. It is a very important truth. So that is Sanātana Dharma. Respect everything. Even things you do not like, the time comes when you will need them very much. That is very important. And so it is said: "Dhyāna Mūlaṁ Guru Mūrtiḥ, Pūjā Mūlaṁ Guru Pādam." And so we worship the holy feet of the Master. The power, the light, like a diamond of wisdom, is in the nails and toes of the Master. It is given in the scriptures and also in the tilaks. So our women are still worshipping. All women have beautiful red, or yellow, or something like red; it is beautiful, so why? They do not know why, but they do it. They say it is for beauty. But this is not for beauty; it is the worshipping of the toes of the Master. Also, there is, you make the tilak, and so your fingers are colored with either the red color or from the, what is this, red, yellow, not many, kesar, yes? But men have forgotten. But especially the ladies and Europeans, they keep this tradition very much. Yes, and I admire them, that they have both nails and here worship of their Gurudev. They have forgotten; the eyes are not open for them, but still they are doing it. There is something in it. The woman is not only looking because of beauty. But there is something, so that high mantra, the best mantra, there is only Guru Vakya. Gurudev tells you to do, you can do many, many things, okay? No problem. But you need the word of that Gurudev. So what is the Guru? Your Guru, my Guru, everyone’s Guru. We have a Guru in each and every hair, every joint, every glance, etc., etc., in our body is a Guru. So, when you were born, it was your guru who brought you out and cleaned you, and also opened your mouth. Yes. Then again, your mother first gave you milk. So, mother is the first god, first guru, and like this. Now, you want to learn cycling. How many times will you fall down? But there is your master, someone—your mother, or your brother, or your father, or when you are a little bigger, someone helps you with how to bike. The cycle guru, yes. And then you have a guru, a driving guru, yes. And nowadays we have schools for that. So Europe is completely filled with gurus. Yes? Nothing can be accepted without a guru. Yes? Then, like in India or in some countries, people will take the cables and connect them here and connect them there and make the light. But in Europe, it cannot be. In America or anywhere, when all cables are put in the building, then the government comes and checks if it is properly done or not. Who did that? That person should have the certificate or diploma from who gave you this, your master in the school, your guru. Any kind of work you are learning is from your guru. And then, like what you call here, the high guru, or what you call mahā mahā. So who is a Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara? The university professor, yes, and his words are valid. Others, not. So what you are writing, and you get a diploma and everything, is your principles, voice, and knowledge. Otherwise, many things you can do. Many are there. Why is the university here, and how much we are struggling there to pass that? That is a guru. Guru means not only sādhu or swāmīs or priest; everyone is our master. Then it is said, especially of Dattātreya, Bhagavān, the Dattātreya. The Dattātreya, you do not know many things, and I will tell you next time. Dattātreya had so many gurus. Even the snake was there, and Dattātreya said, "He is my guru. I learned from him." And also the ladies, the girls in the kitchen, also they are my guru. They made it, how the good cooking was made. So in one house, they had a very nice, beautiful girl, and now they wanted to marry their daughter, and they searched for a good house, not a husband, a good house. Because when your parents are nicely educated, you and your other children also need to be well educated. It is the mother who is the guru, and the father is the guru of the children. And so, how many gurus? Five gurus is the total, but there are many, many. So if the parents are not capable, they should not marry or have children, if you cannot educate the children. Now you do not know how to do it. It happened: a child came. Now what to do? So, thanks to our modern civilization, it does not matter when one girl has a child and no husband, and we get a child, no problems. Otherwise, before when I came to Europe, in the 1950s, it is not too far, that time it was, if a girl was pregnant, they said, "Oh God, she is still not married." Yes, it is not very far. And why? How do I know? Who told me? I also have a master. And Dr. Desirada, yes, Desirada told me everything, yes, and she told that it was that Christianity: all should live very poor, they should live poor. They should live such a painful life because of Jesus. So in the last century, it was different. And before the First World War, there was that, and the church, and everything was so divine. And now we have a Jesus for one day. 365 days. One day we remember our Jesus. Because we get something under the Christmas tree. So as a Christmas, Jesus’s birthday. The rest, we are only, it is only a stamp on the letter, that is all. Yes? Gandhi, Gandhi, it is only a stamp now, nothing else. So, all are our guru, all are education. So, parents do not know, then how should children know? And when these children know, then it will be completely gone. Hari Om Tat Sat. Let us go further. All are our master, guru. So that girl was in the house, and they had some guests. They invited them; they wanted to see how that girl was. And so a few people came to the house as guests. And the families, they were very kind and nice. And the girls cook the meal. And that will be the first test, if she is educated or not. Which special spices, which vegetables for chapati, how, which side should be ghee, not the vegetable side. My disciple, for 45 years I have been telling these three ladies here, I love them so much, but still they do not know which side they should put the ghee. And always, they put chapati on wrong. When the chapati pops up, that is the upper side, always. But when someone dies, then on this back side they put ghee and chapati, and that is put on the chest opposite. There are ceremonies. So now I said, anyhow, since I became a sannyāsī, I am dead. Really, including everyone, till now, who is cooking for me, except for Janki in Jodan. I told them, "Please, can you tell me which part I said very nicely? Is your car front and back? Do you know which is which?" "Yes, of course I know." Then I said, "How do you know chapati? How many thousands of days they were, but again, chapati alongside and on the heart of the master." Why? Because of the lack of education of the parents. Now, every Indian everywhere, everywhere. Now, if peace and harmony come in the world, and no war can be done, it can only be done by women. Only women can bring again the Satya Yuga, but they should be educated, anyhow. I am not going there, so this girl, she was nicely cooking, and she had very nice. This is what they call a bangle, and she was making vegetables and chapati like this, and this bangle was making sound, and he thought, "My future family, my husband’s father, they will say, ‘What, such a stupid girl?’" She is making so many, so many noises, like just now, something was broken, and the family was also very nice. Nobody said anything, but she was saying, and Dattātreya came for bhikṣā, and he was looking. At that time, she was grinding something. So one bangle took out second, third, and Dattātreya is looking, what is she doing, this daughter, little girl, and only one remained. There was no noise. Dattātreya said, "She is my guru." When there are too many together, then it is definitely... Some kind of noise will be, therefore we all become one. Always win, then we are one. Eko brahma dvitīya nāsti. Eko brahma. One is that Brahman, and do this. So therefore, the guru principle is not only a master sitting there, and you give the malas and nice everything, and sometimes chocolate, and sometimes this and that. That is why all masters and gurus, I have diabetes. And you cannot imagine. They said, "Please, when you come to my house, Gurujī, I will give you the food I want." And I will burn the best of the best, so sweet: halwa, this and that. But I said, "No." He said, "No." Today you eat, after you do not, but in my house you eat. When I go to London and there are Indians, Gujaratis, they bring so big laddus made from very nice, a lot of ghee, a lot of sugar, and many, many good things. One laddu is about 250 grams. And then they said in Gujarati language, when they said, so he said, "This is a laddū for you, Gurujī. It is Śivjī’s prasād." You have to eat three. And then his wife comes, and she said, "Only like this, very occasionally, we are getting." And it is a tradition. Now I will serve you. Then grandmother comes and serves. You cannot imagine when I was in London that time, coming, it was like this. Anyhow, I am talking about guru. So everyone is a guru. Now these ladies who were feeding me, but no one can cook like that. Men do not have this tendency. Only the women have, because they are mothers. And the mother knowledge, women do not have. Or the men have not. Similarly, Dattātreya said, "The snake," he said, "it is my guru. This lady is my guru." Many, many things. So, whoever teaches us something, then please do not ever say, "This is a stupid man, no." Whoever gave you a good thing and a good path, you should always be thankful. So, you worship your Guru Pūrṇimā. For your birthday? Why? Because that is your Guru day, you are born. So, many, many there are, but finally it is called then: Dhyāna Mūlaṁ Guru Mūrti, Pūjā Mūlaṁ Guru Pādaṁ, Mantra Mūlaṁ Guru Vākya, Mokṣa Mūlaṁ Guru Kṛpā. Then finally, Satguru, they give the blessing. Satguru means the truth guru. And the truth guru is that which has this entire paramparā. So you have to have a blessing from the paramparā. I am always giving examples. Here we have an old church. And that church is about 500 years old, and all priests who were there were priests, and now a new one came, so he will become also that priest. But this is a paramparā, it went from the beginning where the church was till now, that has to worship this church, understand me? But many think I am a guru. Of course, you are a good guru. You are a good guru. You can make a mālā. At least learn how to make a mālā. So, Satguru Dev is that who has paramparā. Through it, we are from Śaṅkarācārya, and even before Śaṅkarācārya, we are from Alakpurījī. And in many, many ancient literature... There is written about Alakpurījī. I will all bring it one day and give in the books that you see who and where, how was the Alakpurījī, yes. So when Kubera came there, now in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam written, when Kubera came, he came in the glaciers of Alakpurījī, in the place of the Alakpurījī, and our Dr. Shanti, when I tell this, she said, so I said, "Now I know she is a disciple, but she is not a disciple." She cannot understand; she thinks Swamiji has no knowledge. So, therefore, I just talked to Radha and finished. And so she, because she may be listening, but it is very good if Dr. Shanti is listening. So we were talking here, and she went and left a letter to someone in India. And so, if there is anywhere Alakpurījī’s, and that person brought this all to Dr. Shanti. And then he said, "Uh-huh, it is only uh-huh." So it means that between guru and disciple, there is a thin glass, like Vivek Purī’s head. It is a little different between glass, master and disciple, or we and the fly. It is not easy to understand the Guru. There is another story, which I do not want to tell you. You will say, Swamiji, we are now with Saint Surī, no? So Sanātana Dharma is a worship, not in that way which we are thinking. The trees are sanātana dharma. The rain is sanātana dharma. Rivers are sanātana dharma. All creatures are sanātana dharma. All is that in this, and that is called sanātana dharma. And that is why in Sanātana Dharma there is nobody fighting for two. Husband is worshipping Hanumanjī. The wife is worshipping Rāma, the son is worshipping Śakti, the daughter is worshipping Kṛṣṇa, no problem. And another one worshipped Jesus, another one worshipped Muslims in one family, and they have no problem. That is called sanātana. But you take away that which is not good. Then it is not dharma; that is cheating. So do not cheat, do not take. Understand what is that God. So, dhyāna mūlaṁ guru mūrti, pūjā mantra mūlaṁ Guru Vākya, mokṣa mūlaṁ Guru Kṛpā, tasmē Śrī Gurubē Namaha. To that, I will bow down to the Gurudeva. Now, there are certain points. The Guru principle is the first. When Sūrya was there in the ocean, the whole globe was under the water. All this was water. That first avatāra, Vara avatāra, and then Vara avatāra with his teeth here brought up from the ocean the globe. And that time when the first sun ray touched, that is the guru. Because everything began there, other than the creatures began. So first is that. Second, we worship in India mostly now. That is called Vedavyāsa. Bhagavān Vedavyāsa. And so Vedavyāsa is now a Ṛṣi, a Guru, or a Guru. And so, whenever you are preaching something—holy books, holy lectures— Then this chair is not Vedavyāsa Gaḍī, Vedavyāsa’s chair. Or the chair, āsana. So this is Vedavyāsa, and when one is sitting on the Vedavyāsa, you cannot come and sit beside on it. You have to sit on the other chair, and maybe two centimeters, but two centimeters a little lower should be, and that we have known. All Indians know this, and they will come and make praṇāma, bow down, maybe not there. Whom, like me, I am sitting here. But they are praṇām to the Vedavyāsa’s gāḍī, and this Vedavyāsa gāḍī is given to the gurus, and which gurus? That paramparā gurus. And that is why there is still a paramparā. Someone became something, and okay, learned a little something, and then, "I am a guru," or he does not want to worship or respect his guru anymore. He becomes like a guru, then he is different. There was a king, and the king, I will not tell this whole story, and his father, the king, was very spiritual, but he had one son, and he was like a Rākṣasa, and always he was somewhere fighting, and this and that. One day, his people, friends said, the friends said, they said to the prince, Prince, the crown, what we call this crown, is beautiful. It looks on your head, not on your father’s. And he said, "Yes," and he was blood because he killed many people, and he came like that there. And at that time, his father, the king, was sitting with the guru. Gargācārya, that Gargācārya Ṛṣi, which is, for example, my generation, and so that Ṛṣi of the king said, "Gargācārya Ṛṣi, he gave him place. Please, can you tell the best constellation for my daughter, that is Devakī, that she wants to marry, when and how?" And the Kaṁsa came. Kaṁsa came and said to his father, to the king, "Surrender to you, father king. You give me, from today, you give me the crown." And the father said, what did he say? "Yes, you give me the crown, or should I take it? Either you give, or I will take." The father was very humble, and he knew he was a complete rākṣasa. So he gave it to him. He put the crown on the head and said to all the guards, "Take my father to the prison. He is not, he is not a capable king. Put him in the jail." And there, you know, also how Kṛṣṇa was born. These are big, big stories. So there are certain disciples also like this. So, so paramparā, very rare. One can have this, and when then, then you have to respect them. But not for you only, this chair has value. And therefore, this is called Vedavyāsagāḍī. And Guru Pūrṇimā worship in India is this Guru Pūrṇimā from Vedavyāsa and Ādi Guru Śaṅkarācārya. And all their Gurus’ masters who have ashrams, and this has his seat. So what means that position of the Guru? So we are worshipping that from the beginning, not only we, but when you are blessed for that, then that energy is going to you more than others. Therefore, it is a guru’s word, Guruvākya. Mantra mūlaṁ guruvākya. So the best mantra is guruvākya. And what is a guruvākya? The guru’s words. Guru will tell, "Do not do this," then you will not do this. But we say, "Yes, but hiding." Hiding is good. But it will not be good, powerful. We think that I am hiding, but this Guru Gadī said wrong, and so all disciples should follow that. Now you see, every religion did not have that, Christianity also. And Christianity has many, many other kinds of traditions and other paths. But I was telling more because of the here. So, from whom we learn good things is our guru. And who is backbiting, then their distraction will be. Their destruction will be. They will die, they will have accidents, they will this, this... this. So, Sanātana Dharma is for each and every entity, for each and every plant and each and every human. That is Sanātana Dharma, and that is Śiva. Coming so far, so this is the meaning of the Guru Pūrṇimā. So we worship that Guru Pūrṇimā. So today we are worshipping our Paramparā, and I always pray, "Please bless me that I will serve your seat." It is not easy. If we will not have a proper guru, if we do not find some proper, what you call, successor, Then, do not put anyone here. Then, put the shoes, the daṇḍa, the mālā, and this water pot. Put them on there, and we worship that one. Do not put someone who is not capable; otherwise, it will destroy everything. So you should all please follow. Do not think that this is, "I love everybody." But you should also know who is like that, and then that will be a successor. Otherwise, it destroys. So that is why Gurujī told me, for example, in Jaipur āśram, "I give you this āśram, but I wish that this āśram should remain the āśram. Do not give to some bank, or this, or this, or what do you call it, renting." So many things Gurujī has, and I try to follow that. And that is what Gurujī, because Mahāprabhujī said to Gurujī, "There are stories, many things about which that is not to talk about." That so many, many disciples, they are waiting for the, if you have some, what you call... The properties or something never, and never do this. So our pūjā in the mandira is also a paṇḍit who is doing the pūjā. We have to respect that one. He is not a servant. You are a servant because the pūjārī is sitting on their seat, and you cannot say some words, not good words, to the pūjārī. The puja is done by the pujari. God is there because He is there. Therefore, it is very important to never say any word. "Now we do not need you, you go out." Okay, he will go, but the God of the altar, He will go with you. Only some reflection is there. But of course, a paṇḍit must be a paṇḍit to know that knowledge, and when there is no one, then of course we can make pūjā, okay, and praṇām. So also in the church, there is a proper person who can go and make a pūjā. And why there are so many things that we will talk? Others, and now I think they want to make some pūjā, so we will. So, wish you all the best, my dear all bhaktas around the whole world, and bless you. So, a few minutes, then finished. Oṁ Savitṛ vaha prasava utpūnam yacchidreṇa pavitreṇa sūrya sarasvibhiḥ.
