Practicing pranayama, Jaipur, India, (2/2)

Prāṇāyāma is a subtle and powerful practice for human well-being. Humans lead unbalanced lives, creating mental pollution and stress, unlike other creatures who live in harmony with nature. For this reason, the great sages researched life through tapasyā. Their findings in the Vedas declare that the entire universe exists within the human body. Prāṇa is the cosmic energy that binds the five elements and balances all levels of consciousness. The ultimate human tragedy is to die without self-knowledge. The goal is the union of individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness. Discipline is essential for success in this yoga sādhana. Practice prāṇāyāma gently and systematically, without hurry, preparing the body as a temple. It harmonizes the mind, calms thoughts, and frees one from stress.

"Prāṇa is that energy which keeps all the five elements together: space, fire, water, air, and earth."

"Without discipline, your yoga sādhanā cannot be successful."

Filming location: Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

I had promised to conduct some prāṇāyāma and dhyāna practice today. It is also true that our camera is broadcasting to 185 countries. There are a few people there who know Hindi. Therefore, keeping everyone's interest in mind, I will speak in English and say a few things in Hindi in between. This is how we will proceed. The voice that goes into our ears in the satsaṅg of the saints is certainly fruitful. If a farmer throws a seed in a field, whether it is straight or upside down, it is definitely planted. I want to tell you about a miraculous thing. Outside, there are guards, police, and an intake board switch. That miraculous thing is this: there is a red button. If I press it for a while, see what happens. If it is near, you press it. Similarly, in meditation, prāṇāyāma, and kāṭhiṣṭha, we turn off the lights. But the camera people say that Swamījī is not visible to others, so we will keep the lights on. If anyone comes from outside, tell them to sit there or anywhere without coming forward. Do not disturb them by coming forward. Telephones and mobiles should be switched off. These are the instructions for outsiders. So, whoever comes can sit outside; my voice will go everywhere. If any of you are in a hurry, don't get up in the middle and leave; you can go now. How much time will it take? 45 minutes. It's 8 o'clock. It's been 5 minutes since 8, so the entire program will go until 9. Sit for prāṇāyāma for half an hour. What's the hurry now? Take advantage of it, am I right? Yes. I said take advantage of half an hour. Yes. Okay, then I will do my duty, and this is also a duty. Salutation to the cosmic light, Lord of our hearts, omniscient and omnipresent. In his divine presence, very good evening, dear brothers and sisters, especially to all our dear brothers and sisters around the whole world. This divine blessing is coming to you from the holy land, Bhārat, India, the land of the saints. Land of the ṛṣis and the land of the incarnations, the land of that science and wisdom—yoga, spirituality, self, the jīvātmā, the consciousness, mind, emotion, intellect, memory, and body—welcome you all, dear spiritual seekers, practitioners of yoga and daily life, and different techniques. Many of you have a birthday today, and at the same time, I would like to wish you and bless you for your happy birthday. The subject is, as usual, yoga. In this, today is called prāṇāyāma. Like physical exercises and mental exercises, the breath are the exercises of the prāṇa. Though prāṇa is not a breath, prāṇa is not oxygen, but prāṇa is the source of our life. Prāṇa is that energy which keeps all the five elements together, like cement and brick. It is prāṇa which keeps the five elements together: space, fire, water, air, and earth. Prāṇa is that quality or that energy, cosmic energy, which balances our body, the function of the body, the consciousness. The different levels of the consciousness are balanced: unconscious, subconscious, conscious, superconscious, and cosmic consciousness. Memory, the thoughts, the intellect, the emotion, through that, the well-being of a human. Other creatures don't need this, because other creatures live their life according to nature. Out of 8.4 million different creatures, there is only one that is a human who leads life very unhealthy, very unbalanced. Therefore, humans need yoga exercises, prāṇāyāmas, meditations, and mantras. Humans are victims of stress. Humans are victims of different problems. Humans have social and economic problems. Animals don't have economic problems. Do they have? No. They don't have a social problem. They are happy, but it is the human who troubles them. It is the human who is torturing them. It is the human who makes their life miserable. The human makes a miserable life for other creatures as well as for themselves. All this global warming, all these climate changes, and all this pollution we see is the pollution created out of the human mind. That's mental pollution of greed, attachment, expectations, and so on. Mahatma Gandhi said, "Mother Earth has enough for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone’s greed." Because greed is limitless. Animals know, animals don't have greed, except for a few creatures. The mouse collects the corn, seeds, and deposits them somewhere. Or a squirrel collects the nuts and deposits them somewhere, then that stupid squirrel forgets where he put the things. Otherwise, other creatures do not collect things because they know when we need, God will give us. Who gave you the beak will give the food. Jisne chāñch dī, wo chugā degā. Ye janvar jaante hai, lekin manav, manuṣī ke andar itnī śraddhā, aur wo viśvās nahī hai ki wā Bhagavān par atuṭ viśvās kare ki jisne cāñc dī wo cugā degā. Therefore, for the well-being of humans, especially because humans do not lead a healthy way of life and do not lead a harmonious life with nature, the great saints, the ṛṣis, have been making tapasyā. Now, what do we understand about tapasyā? There are different opinions about tapasyā, i.e., hard work. So now the tapasyā means research work. Those great saints who have been researching. It is the Vedas, and in the Vedas the saints have been saying, "Yathā brahmāṇḍe tathā piṇḍe." What is in the universe exists in this body, and what is not in this body does not exist in the universe. You will be surprised to know that, till today, in modern science, the modern scientists—whatever they researched and whatever they developed or they found—all is in our yogic literatures or in the Vedas and Upaniṣads. Āj tak koī sansār mein aisā vijñānī nahīṁ huā hai is ādhunik jagat mein. Usne kus aisa research kiyā ho jo hamāre śāstra mein nahīn hai. Millions and billions of dollars or rupees are being spent to research something. We had already, therefore they should study Vedas, they should study Upaniṣads, they should study the Rāmāyaṇa, the Gītā. In Chicago there is a library, and three Americans every day used to go to the library and borrow the Rāmāyaṇa. And they study Hindi to understand the Rāmāyaṇa, and in English both, every day, one and a half hours. And every day, for one and a half hours, they were reading only one chapter, the same chapter, again and again. So one day, the librarian asked, "Sir, why do you borrow this book every day and read the same thing?" The answer was, we would like to know which technology was there for the Pushpa Bhāṇ. Bhagavān Rāma came in that plane in which Rāvaṇa had come. And according to his wish, he would have grown. 20,000 or 50,000, lakhs or 2 lakhs of people would have grown, and only one or two seats would have been made. We would like to know that technology, so there are many things. That time, how many thousands of years or lakhs of years passed? The cloning of the Gaṇeśa, which technology did the Śiva use? So there is nothing, till today, that the modern scientists have developed or founded. That is yoga. So tapasyā means research. A scientific research work about planets, which planet will have an effect on us, will have an effect on the earth, which planet is born on earth, which planet is born on earth, everything is created. Now, as I told yesterday, tons of theory is nothing compared with a gram of practice. The answer is yoga. Exercise different kinds of exercises. The definition of yoga is beyond our imagination. Literally, said yoga means "yojana," union, but union of the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness, since this individual soul... Got that radiance, that light of the cosmic one, that ātmā collected inside the jīva, the soul. Soul is not ātmā. Many people translate soul as ātmā, or they use soul in place of ātmā. Soul is not ātmā. Soul is not immortal. Soul is a bundle of the karmas. Ātmā is immortal. Soul, jo jīva jo hai, wo ātmā, anātmā kātmā. There is no philosophy, there is no science till today that could prove what is Ātmā and what is the soul and what is the destiny which leads the soul to the different levels. Or the space in the universe or in different lives. Till today, only the yogīs were capable of knowing the body. The function of the body, the descending of the soul into the body, what is the soul, the memory, how the soul is bound to the karma, to the destiny, and moves around the whole universe. Śama-rūpī laharon pe teratā huā ye jīvātmā. The final destination, or the last chance for us, is human life. Many things happen in human life, good and bad, every day. But one of the terrible tragedies which will happen to a human is that they will die without ātmā jñāna. Kai dūr ghaṭnāyāṁ, acchī aur burī ghaṭnāyāṁ aur dūr ghaṭnāyāṁ is sansār māṁ manuṣyī ke sāth hotī haiṁ. Lekin sabse bhyankar dur ghatna manav ke saath wo hogi ki manav bina Ātmā Jñāna prapt kiye śarīr chhoot jayega. There’s no more terrible tragedy than to die without ātmā-jñāna. Believe or not believe, that’s your choice. Then you will realize after that, "Oh God, I missed it, but now it’s gone." The bullet has gone out of the gun. Now you can’t run behind to get that bullet. It’s gone. Karma action is in your hands, but the result or the destiny is in the hands of God. So it is your destiny which will lead you through the universe and to the union. That means the individual consciousness merges into the cosmic consciousness. Finally, through samādhi, the knower, the knowledge, and the object become one. Three merges into oneness, that’s called samādhi, final, last. Thousands and thousands of years, ṛṣis were sitting and doing research work, tapasyā. Who am I? From where do I come? Why did I come here? What is the purpose of my coming, and where will I go? Do you know? Know the answer to this: you are self-realized. Ādiguru Śaṅkarācārya said, "So prāṇāyāma, prāṇokavyāyāma." So when we practice prāṇāyāma, automatically the both hemispheres come into balance. Santulatā, hamāre mastiṣke dono bhāg jo hai, usmeṁ santulatā ājatī. Patañjali said, Without discipline, your yoga sādhanā cannot be successful. Anuśāsan hi mānuṣī ko mahān banātā hai. Anuśāsan hī deś ko majbūt banātā hai. And anuśāsan, discipline, yogī ko us śreṇī pe bhojatā hai. Self-discipline is the key to success. Atha yoga anuśāsanam. Every day, discipline, day by day, doesn’t matter what happens. A very little example: people told, I didn’t see, and it’s written also. It doesn’t matter where Nehru was; every day he did a ten-minute Śīrṣāsana. Until the last days of his life, his memory, his thoughts, his words, his will, were admirable. Admiring discipline. Make a vow that I will do my sādhanā every day now. Quit your one hour sleep. Yeah, quit your two hour sleep. Meditation and prāṇāyāma will replace your sleep. Discipline. So when we will do the pranayama, chitta vṛtti nirodhaḥ. At that time, the thoughts in our brain, which are coming in the chittas, will be harmonized, balanced, and calmed down. Means you become free from the stress, you become free from the worries. You become free from the fears, and you become aware about your being, that you are. Abhī bhūl jāte hain. Khāte hain lekin, bhojan karte hain, telephone hain. Hāṁ, ṭhīk hain, ṭhīk hain. All right, hāṁ. Good, I will come. Don’t worry. Bojan bhi kar rahe hain. Telephone hain na, doesn’t let us eat and drink and sleep peacefully. Prāṇāyāma. Sukshma. Slowly. Subtle but powerful. You know, in India, the Indian government has a project. Every village should be connected with the Sīsī road, right? Very good. Your damar will break, Sisi’s life will be more. But when a six-road government is made, or anyone makes it, then you do not have to ride a cycle for a minimum of twenty-eight days, and no one should wait for twenty-eight hours. So what happens? There are minor cracks in it. It is not visible, but it develops in such a way that at some point the road breaks. Many people say that the government is such a fool. Son, at least put the money in the pocket and put the bad material in the pocket. The landlord is very naughty. They say that the landlord knows the language of the king. I said, I will not say it, but I have a very good landlord. Now the road is broken because we bought our car early on that road; we could not do the inspection. If you don’t drive a car for 28 days, then your road will not be broken for 28 years or 50 years. It is our fault, but humans always try to see the mistakes in others. You have something on your mouth here, you don’t see. But my beard is covered with rice. You will not see anything. Your eyes will go to that towel again and again. Is there a black stain? My entire shirt is very clean and nice, one color. But here is a black spot. Always, your eyes will go to that small black spot. That is human psychology. That humans are always searching for some mistakes in someone. And that’s why these mistakes happen. The government is not guilty. The contractor, the thekedār, is not guilty. Guilty we are, people, that we don’t follow the discipline. Atha yogānuśāsanam. So prāṇāyāma is very subtle but powerful. But you have not been preparing your body. You did not practice the complete, systematic course of the pranayamas. And you begin to do immediately what you call the Bhastrikā. What will the people say? Have some mercy. Your heart will also say, "Since I was in your mother’s womb, I have been helping you. Why are you giving me such a shock?" If I give you a shock, keep it here. Isn’t it right? In one shock, your shock will be over. Therefore, to do the Bhastrika, it is very harmful. It means on the fresh, sissy road, you are driving your tractor, khad, khad,... khad. Then Kapālbhāti, it is very famous now, but many people, they are doing Bhastrikā, and they say do Kapālbhāti. Even they don’t know the difference between Kapālbhāti and Bhastrikā. Kapalbhāti is done from the abdominal muscles from down, nābhi se niche. This is kapālbhāti. Vastrika is done from nābhi. But don’t do. Iska matlab kī nahī, rāstā par ṭraikṭar yā bas calānā yā baṛā ṭaṅkar. Pura course kariye. Slowly, step by step, don’t hurry. Then you will be successful. Don’t think that tomorrow I will be enlightened. You practice wrong, then definitely you will be enlightened. Where? Rāmnām sath hai, aur theṭ gayā gāt hai. Āpkī santān lagāyegī āg cittā ke cāraoṁ tarah, hu ilight ho gayā. Dekha deki sāje yog, gate kāyā aur baḍhe yog. Now, that’s why I gave you this, especially our Indian brothers and sisters, and of course all dear brothers around the world, don’t hurry, don’t hurry. Yoga is not a gymnastic. Yoga is not bodybuilding, and yoga is not acrobatic. Yoga is not a circus art. Your body is a temple of your Jīvātmā. Your body is everything for you. You have to be very gentle, very careful, and very loving with this body. You know, the heart day and night beats for you, pumping. It doesn’t matter if we are under the water, in an aeroplane, biking, hiking, jogging, eating, talking, dancing, or swimming; the heart doesn’t give up its duty. He’s constantly in balance, helping. You won’t find a servant like him. He’s helping you so much that you don’t get hurt. But when you don’t keep your attention, your heart gets a little confused. Then you get nervous. Oh my God, what should I do now? Take care of the entire body, so prāṇāyāma. It is called Sudharsiṅgh in our police. This is Sudhārsingh. It is used to correct the mistakes. This is Yogdānda. It is called Vairāgīṇa. And this Vairāgīṇa is used for Prāṇāyāma or Mālā Phirnā. So that the body is Siddha, and the body gets support. If this stick will not be here, then while meditating, I will go like this. My lungs will be pressed, or I will sleep and do like this. But this will not let me do that, because automatically all pressure will go there, and it will all the time keep my body relaxed and straight. During pranayama, I will put my elbow here, and this is a pranayama mudra which you should do. Thumb for closing the right nostril. The ring finger for closing the left nostril. Slowly, slightly press. Don’t press like this, and don’t close like that. Gently, like this. Then inhale, Kashi, stomach, exhale. You can go to any carpenter and let them make a stick. It must not be like a design, everything, that you can support your elbow. That’s it. It will help you very, very much. Now we will do practice. I spoke for 20 minutes now, 25 minutes. For the rest of the minutes, we will do the prāṇāyāma. So please sit straight. Chin mudrā. This is called Paramātmā. This is called Jīvātmā. This is called Triguna. When a yogī meditates, he connects Jīvātmā with Paramātmā. And he remains free from all three guṇas. He remains free from all three guṇas. Sattva, rajas, and tamas, its name is Chin Mudrā. The energy center of both of these here harmonizes our thoughts and brain waves. Truncalizing the brain waves. So sit like this, close your eyes, eyes closed, body straight, don’t move the body. Keep your body straight upright. Relax the home. Relax the home. Apne pūrī śarīra ko Viśrām. Śarīra siddha. Pūrī śarīra ko ḍhīlā choḍho. Relax your home. Ab apne śvāsa par śvāsa. Kā dhyān kī jī. Now concentrate and feel your breath. You know that you are inhaling, and you know that you are exhaling. Aake bandh, camera bandh, I know that I am inhaling. I know that I am exhaling. Main swāsa le rahā hoon aur main swāsa nikal rahā hoon. Swaas. The technique which we will do now, which we are doing, is a very first step for the A very powerful kriyā called Prāṇa Sañcāraṇ. Kāyā is therium, motionlessness of the body. Motionlessness of the body. Do not move your body at all and be relaxed. Aṅguli tak nahī. Now concentrate on your breath. At the time of the inhalation, the trunk of the body is expanding, and at the time of the exhalation, the trunk of the body is contracting. Swāsa laiti svāme, hamārī dhaḍ jo hai, śīna, peṭ, ādhī, phulatā hai. Aar swāsa nikāltī śvāme, sīkurtā hai. Time of inhalation, the trunk of the body is expanding. At the time of the exhalation, the trunk of the body is contracting. I know that I inhale, I know that I exhale. Now, for some time, focus on the navel. Inhale and exhale the breath. Around the navel, our stomach expands and contracts. Relax. Rest. Kāya sthiram. The body should not move at all. The eyes should be closed completely. Then all the actions will be repeated. Now place both fingers of the right hand in the middle of the bhrūmadhya. Close the right nostril with the thumb, and slowly take a deep breath through the left nostril, and exhale through the same nostril. Place both fingers from your right hand on the eyebrow center. Close your right nostril with your right thumb. Slowly, deep inhale and exhale only through the left nostril. Body straight, motionless. Now, with your ring finger, close your left nostril and inhale and exhale. Only through the right nostril. Now place your hand again on the knee and have a normal Breath, keep your hands on your knees, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. I am taking A breath, and I am exhaling. My body is very happy. I am experiencing ultimate bliss. My I feel divine bliss within me. I feel tranquility in my thoughts, and I feel comfortable. Relax the whole body. Don’t move. If you open your eyes again and again, it means that there is a lot of restlessness in you. Your mind is filled with so many thoughts that you don’t know what to do. When all your thoughts are balanced through prāṇāyāma, automatically your mental state will be undisturbed. If again and again you open your eyes and close, again and again you move your body. It means within you is the restlessness. Your brain is full of stress. But the prāṇāyāma, this kind of prāṇāyāma, chandravedan and surivedan, will help you to be relaxed and lead a life without stress. Bina aṅkhe khole, without opening your eyes, three times deep inhale, exhale. Tīn bār bina aṅkhe khole, gahrā swās lījiye, aur dhīre dhīre swās nikāle. Swās lījiye, aur dhīre dhīre swās nikāle. Swās lījiye, dhīre se swās nikāle. Deep inhale, and once we will all together chant Oṁ. Deep inhale. Asato mā sadgamaya, tamaso mā jyotirgamaya. Śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ... Move your fingers, close the fist, open the palms, stretch your elbows, and hold your palms together. And rub your palms, place the palms on the face, and open your eyes. Are you?
