The Dust of His Feet: Remembrances of Gurudev

A disciple shares intimate remembrances and mystical stories about his Gurudev.

"My prāṇa had left my body, but you came and brought me back. Why?" and "This speaks to the deep devotion between guru and disciple; there is a strong bond."

The speaker narrates personal episodes, including twice reviving Gurudev from near-death in hospitals, and describes Gurudev's compassionate nature. He recounts a spiritual journey to sacred sites like the Alaknanda River and Alakhpurī Glaciers, weaving in tales of siddhis, divine beings like Mahāprabhujī, and the eternal presence of the guru. The talk emphasizes devotion and concludes with the distribution of a sacred photo and the singing of a bhajan.

Filming location: Bari Khatu, Rajasthan, India

He was with Gurudev. As you know, there are many types of sādhus, but their Gurudev was exceptionally compassionate, simple, and filled with great love for each one. I will share about my life with Gurudev sometime, if you don't talk too much. But there is no need to save it for later. Gurudev came abroad with me two or three times. On two occasions, there were incidents where Gurujī had accidents in the hospital. They gave an injection for the entire procedure; nowadays, they just give one injection and you remain conscious. I do not know the details, but Gurudev told some of you noble ones, and Gurujī never lies; He always speaks the truth. The operating theater gets cold, and the operator gets cold too. Gurujī was quite weak; that body is different. The staff brought a doctor and covered Him with a cloth or a sheet. I arrived just in time as the doctors came. My mouth felt either cold or hot, so I quickly went and took a bottle of hot water. I placed it on Bābajī’s chest and on both hands. "Oh Mahesh," I said, "after the pain subsides, sleep." Another person was using warm air to become warm, so I placed that near Gurujī’s heart as well. Later, Gurujī said to me: "I had already left, so why did you call me back? My prāṇa had left my body, but you came and brought me back. Why?" Bāpus said he had forgotten. Bāp jī said such things should not be said. But those who were here said that according to that, Gurujī had undergone another operation, and the same incident occurred during that operation as well. I was about to leave, but Mahesh called me back. These two incidents happened. After that, Gurujī had knee surgery in America. The doctors there... So from there, from Delhi, we privately brought Gurujī from Hameja to Jodhpur. I had said, "Bāb Jī, you take him to Mumbai, and Narendar would serve him." But no, this was better now. After this, Bāb Jī had become quite weak. The heart of Delhi... It was the day of Diwali, and I was there for a whole month, which seemed like a dead month. One day, Rajender Jī Pariyār at Soravi Bhavan said to me, "Bāb Jī, may I tell you something?" I said, "Speak." Are you listening? Perhaps Rajendra Jī said that Svāmījī, Gurudev, had told him many times that if He said so, He would go. Now the situation had become such with Gurudev that Rajendra Jī said, "Please, Bab Jī, you go ahead." But no matter what, now we... How will you say it—go and exhaust the body? Does it happen or not? Rajender Jī, then Diwali came again, so I said that on the day of Diwali I will go to Roop Mā Jādan, and after two or three days... He was there, and our doctor, Śānti Jī, was with us. I was there, and then the doctor came—Dr. Goyal. Doctor Śānti said, "Swāmījī, please sit down." I sat down. After a very short while, Gurudev left. From that day onward, Gurudev remained outside, physically. Everything is there, and Dr. Shānti said that day that on that day Svāmījī... The guru has left the body, but it seems that your attachment, the bond between guru and disciple, is not letting go. Look, I am speaking the truth. When Rajaniraj said, I said, alright, I cannot go anywhere, I cannot say that, but I will come. Khāṭū and Khāṭū are the abodes of their Bhagavān Dīpanān Mahāprabhujī. I will pray to Mahāprabhujī that whatever is good, may you do it. I was sleeping here in Shiv Bāg, and tonight I saw myself going into the forest; my eyes opened. Then I came back to this world, to our Surishpuri. Maharāj, this is not a photo of Suruṣpur jī; this is from inside, from Dipīṭ. You said in my name, "Maharāj, please come quickly. How is Mādhavan jī?" I said he is fine. There, while I was singing ārtī, I addressed Gurujī as Mahāprabhujī. And the telephone rang, it wasn’t him, he had just arrived after ten long years of study. When he came there, Surajpuri Jī was there, and Surajpuri Jī’s son, Badripuri, took the telephone and said, “Saumī Jī, this is your telephone,” and I found out. I said, I am with Bāb Jī, I am with Surashpur Jī. Surashpurī was lovingly offering me tea. I said, I will not drink water, I will go. I have my Beedview Fabric’s bulletproof car. I found out what Bāp Jī had done at night. So they came, to the hospital. I came, Dr. Shānti was there, and she enthroned Gurujī inside the singāsan. This speaks to the deep devotion between guru and disciple; there is a strong bond. It is said that first and foremost, the mother is to be regarded as Devī, the father as Deva, and the ācārya as well. Bhavā and after that Satguru Dev are our foundation, the basis of life. So, dear ones, many of you have come, and you must have heard, you must have heard as well. This time, I was going to a different village from America, I was going to Hawaii, and within me there was a certain feeling that Bab Jī’s Gurujī... Guru Jī has been here a lot; this land, this very land, Baba Jī wandered and sat around a lot. All of this is the dust of his feet. Here, I thought that we should celebrate Baba Jī’s Punya Tithi here. After twelve years, there is a short Bandara. The disciple's suffering is also a duty; I thought everything here, within the dust of Bābajī's feet, here is Bābajī's, here is our gathering, samādhi, whatever you may call it, We have come here, you have also come, and it is by Gurudev’s grace that Gurudev is everywhere. Here, this is the dust of His feet, and we are seated upon that dust. For all you devotees, come here, have your meal, rest at night, come and go as you please. This is the seat of our humble abode. Guruji had found out in the meantime, the matter was discussed, but it is not yet complete. It had happened, yet it was different. We were searching or seeking Puri Jī, and the cave I was looking for—your year, our foreigners and our doctor Sānti went to find it. It is the Alaknanda river, the same one associated with Alak Puri Jī, and Alak Puri Jī was there during the Satya Yuga, and his case... There may be some like us, but not as many as millions; however, not everyone has understood this, or it is yet to happen later. But I climbed, straight like this, and there was the knowledge of water there, that straight path, I have the willpower, and now I was climbing up the tree, climbing... only a little was left, and I saw that I could not go further, so I turned back, a... The mind is like this, slowly, slowly, the pace climbs like a cloud rising to the house. Is it the weight of Mahāprabhujī or not? Then what is this Mahāprabhujī? Is it Devpurī or some other purī? And our revered Satguru Svāmījī Mādhvānana Bhagavān—these feet here are... Just imagine, today Swāmījī sent me somewhere, and I couldn’t respond. She says that I am very different, there is no one else like me, but then I found it further down. That is the point. The second point is that in the Satya Yuga, Alakhpurī Jī existed and still exists, and it is about 13 to 30 kilometers away. The mountain they have is called Alakhpurī Glaciers. The mountains of Alakāpūrī, which are made of ice and snow, were so high that they were about 30 meters tall. Now they are melting. They call it Alakapūrī, the glacier of Alakapūrī, the capital of Alakapūrī, meaning the capital of Alakapūrī still exists today. Even if you look in any scripture, you will see that this Alakapūrī was their capital. Rāvaṇa’s brother—Rāvaṇa himself was no less—approximately... This dates back one and a half lakh years, and at that time Bhagavān Rāma had incarnated, and Hanumān Jī was also present then. So all of this has existed, even beyond that. So, Alagpurī Jī Glaciers says that there, Ravana's brother, the younger brother, took away Ravana's magnificent crown made of gold and jewels from there. It contained all kinds of siddhis within it. Amitāre says that these are not the siddhis to be claimed as one’s own; the siddhis that need to be claimed as one’s own are different. We say we have siddhis, but siddhis are not truly ours. However, that glory is entirely different. Mahāprabhujī gave Kubera a mountain there among the glaciers, which is called Kubera’s Mountain. The belly belongs to Nara and Nārāyaṇa; that is their belly. And here, it is the place of the Purījī and the Gur Pāṇḍavas. Those who were going to heaven—two brothers, four brothers—and Draupadī went along. But their support was that Ādāk had to be fully present there, and after climbing the stairs, they would have to go to heaven. And one stair is at least about 20 feet high. Now, that is a 20-foot-high ice rock, so how do they climb the stairs on that ice? So, there, ahead, ahead... They still say there that where there is such a small space, no one can go except animals, and no aerial aid either. Those who went there became the same ten; it is also situated beneath the ice, connected there. The great souls reside within the śāntas, and at that very place, there is a chaturvat, which is a lake of water. There, on every full moon, Śiva, Brahmā, and Vi... There is a very large rock of water, not of Khāṭū, I mean it is not of Khāṭū. And if we go further ahead, there is a water body called Śūrya Kuṇḍ, Śūrya Kuṇḍ. And if we go a little beyond Śūrya Kuṇḍ, then there is Dev Purī. They go inside the rock as if you insert a needle into butter—it neither goes in nor stays—and on water, you have all seen this in Lilāmarīt. Everyone here in the nearby villages knows about Devpūrjī; there, Alakhāpūrī Jī gave him everything, and then here... It is, and it is within all of us, so as I continue to contemplate this... What I want to say, my Devpurī Jī, is that this story of our Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī is not just for one person; Mahāprabhujī belongs to the entire world. Bāb Jī is present throughout the whole world, isn’t he? Today, everywhere in the entire world, when the process of the earth is engaged for the first time, you should know that this radiance of Mahāprabhujī is not mine; it is done by Mahāprabhujī, and Gurudev has said so. What has Gurudev said? Gurujī was not an ordinary man. I had seen once that Gurujī was sleeping in the room while I was sleeping downstairs on a mat. After that, it suddenly felt as if lightning was flashing, but no matter what, Gurujī always had a mālā in his hand. Sometimes, while walking, the mālā would get caught on people, and then sleep would vanish. You were sleeping, and then waking up; you have never given this to anyone before. They look at the book, read it, and the misfortune is that they are not able to understand it. So they go there, it happens. So I went there, went to Badrinath for the first time. Dr. Sāṅgati had arranged everything, the cave was all set up. At Badrinath, millions of rupees come in, millions of people go there. I don’t know how much money they must be spending; everything related to their sīyo is connected. They have control over everything separately. When I spoke to them, they told me, "No, no, it’s mine..." What a wonderful Alakhpurī Jī’s cave! Alakhpurī Jī, please come. I said, yes, alright. Why? I said, he is my guru, my grandfather guru. What a blessing! So I said, I have fifteen foreigners and five policies, and we are here. Then he said, Swāmījī, if... Do you want to witness the miracle of Alakhāpūrī Jī or the miracle of those glaciers? Where is it? So do not sleep until twelve or one o’clock. If you have the time, then check at twelve; if it is raining, then... By our good fortune, there were stars upon stars for three whole days, the weather was clear. When I went there for the first time, we were singing ārtī. From five to twelve, we stood; five of us sat quietly inside a small cave. There were two or three people from Australia with us. That something is happening from that lesson, that lesson is radiating some light, there are no clouds, no rain, nothing at all, I am speaking the truth, not connected, your Maharaj’s, even conversations have their own value, right, if you do not understand the truth... Do not light a fire because fires are not lit during this month, as it is the time of Nandā Devī. So I said, neither for cooking nor for tea—I have put everything on the stove for the vegetables. Then he got up, went to their room, and brought 15 kilos of dry fruits, saying, "Here, you eat this." I said... Alright then, we also took some dry fruit, ate it there while sitting. If birth is to give bread to the unsteady, then what bread can I give? There is no one there. Then on the way ahead, I met a Mahārāj; he has a small hut. He gave me tea. After he gave it, I said, "Go call the police." I said, "Go, I will give you two thousand rupees, I will see to it, and you..." After going there and eating a lot of bread, I was not taken away for punishment, so they took it. Then I came back. The second time I went, I bowed at Bāb Jī’s feet and asked for forgiveness from Pūrvālaka Pūrv Jī, saying that I had accidentally slept in your cave. I said I would sleep at your feet’ dust from now on. From there, this... These are events, and along with these events, in the Śrīmat Bhāgavatam, it is written about different purīṣas; it is written in the Mahāśiva Purāṇa, in various scriptures, and it is still happening. It is also in the Vedas, because the Vedas... There is indeed a lot, which means that I am seeing—ah, from there flows the Sarasvatī river, which then merges into the Alagpurī river. And there is another one as well. But Bhagavān Gajanan was composing the Vedas, and he called Vedavyās Jī his Gurūji. Shiva, Gāṇeśa, if the river’s course... When the turbulent water disturbs me, what can Veda Vyāsa do? Go into the forest or the rocks, she still comes, and then disappears into the water, vanishing inside the rock, and she comes again. When our Kum fair takes place in Ilāvad, that is called the Triveṇī tattva, Priyāgarās. So here, everyone sees it, but perhaps I may not. It is so, but I think that my life has become blessed now. That is separate—Purī Jī’s seat, this is the seat. And for this reason, the dhūnā that has been lit here, what is its name? The dhūnā of the Siddhas. Who was Devpurī Jī? Siddha. We should not say Bhagavān or Avatār; we will say Siddha. And Siddha is about the self. It happens that if the right things are not said, then it is very good; you are very fortunate to be at the feet of Babajī here. Just as I searched separately for Nanda, similarly, all the disciples of our Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyan Mahāprabhujī and their Gurujīs are being seen here. There is Alag Purī, Dev Purī, Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyan Mahāprabhujī, Sadguru Svāmījī Mādhvānān, Mahāmanaliśva Lālā Nanji Mahārāj, and Bodhā Nanji Mahārāj Brahmā. What can I say, now that our Brahmā, in a way, you could say the great soul Viśvarī Chamjo and Śivānana Jī Mahārāj or the Thākur Sāb of Chhoṭī Khāṭū—their bhajan is such a beautiful bhajan. If you observe, you will know it is a unique bhajan. Do not ask why or what to buy; just say what it is. Do you not know who is the true essence? My journey shook the very foundation, and when the river flows, it moves to the right and left. In the same way, when you see us coming, the disciples of our Gurudev call out by name. Yes, yes, you have done so now. No, my remembrance power has diminished, no, no... What has been given by the one who is Brahmānanda Jī belongs to Brahmānanda Jī. There are very beautiful bhajans, and we will share those with you later. Now, see, even the sages have a certain fire within them. When you read the scriptures deeply, it ignites a fire within, like a blazing flame. Now look, this is so... See, dear ones, today is such a fortunate, fortunate day. Open up, brother, open up a little, Mahārājī. Around all the villages here, everything belongs to Bābajī, and everyone used to say, whoever they were—whether from any caste, Muslim, or otherwise—they all said that whatever Mahādvānan Jī did for Dipāpūrī Jī... The kind of service that has been done by people until now, and Bābājī has also tested it thoroughly, see that Bhagavān Mahāprabhujī is everywhere, just as Bhagavān Rāma is everywhere. It is said that Bhagavān had two sons, Lava and Kuśa, but after them, who is there? Because that Svāmī Rāma has merged within everyone. Similarly, Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī has merged within everyone. Your uncle... He is one, and our friends, our disciples—all are the same. The sun is one. When Bābājī used to say, "Come, what does it say? That the crow has forgotten," and every caste, all poisons affect them, right? What do they call this caste? Kabīr, Kabīr did not separate different sampradāyas. So, what do they call sampradāya? Lāv... What does the poet say? Yes, the poet pulls the poet’s strings, oh mother of the poet. The abode is such that it is bathed in the month of Pausha. I am many, I am like this, this is because I am a Megvār. Neither is that Rājū, nor is this. Oh, you do not know, a Megvār—how many Megvārs do you have? You say, has Kālidāsa ever given them a verse? They are Meg, aren’t they? Is it written or not? Look, Meg is a messenger, isn’t he? How much should one read or study? Come on, So today, due to the divine grace of Bābajī and the blessings we receive in every way, our Guruvāī Narendra Chaudhary Jī, who has always served Bābajī and Mahāprabhujī in every possible way, recently brought a photo for everyone. Today, he has given five thousand rupees, and Svāmījī keeps asking, "What do you keep doing?" Just see how beautiful this is. There is a photo of Bāb Jī and Mā Prabhu Jī; everyone will take it, not for money, just like that. But when you go home, will you keep it in your pūjā or not? If not, then it’s better not to keep it. So should I give it now or tomorrow? Should I give it now or tomorrow? Come, brother, come. Whether you meet or not, just come. That’s how it is. If anyone feels tired at night, then take them to your room, to your bed, or to the place where you keep the pouch. Keep the photo of Bab Jī there and place it in the pūjā. Also, frame it, as Bab Jī wrote bhajans in it, and Gurudev did as well. Bāb Jī composed a bhajan for Gurujī; it is true that this bhajan resonates throughout the entire world, praising the Lord. Though this body is my ego, through this body, within the four worlds, the radiant light of Bāb Jī, of Mahāprabhujī, has come forth. This luminous light is like a beam of nectar from the ocean, the sacred lamp of Hari Mahādānī. What more can anyone say now, right? From the ocean of amṛta, clouds have come. You may not see it with your eyes, but you know it; you will see it now. Don’t deny it, don’t refuse. Say, “Prakāśa Puñja, Prakāśa Puñja, ocean of amṛta, Śrī Dīpā Harī Mahādānī.” One who is showered with the nectar of immortality is considered truly fortunate. One who has drunk the nectar to the full, unaware of coming and going, is a radiant source of light in the ocean of amṛta, the divine lamp, the great giver, Hari Mahādānī. A radiant source of light in the ocean of amṛta, the divine lamp, the great giver, Hari Mahādānī. Resonating throughout the entire world, resonating throughout the entire world, is the immortal story of the Lord, a radiant beam from the ocean of amṛta. Śrī Dīpā Harī Mahādhanī, a luminous beam from the ocean of amṛta, Śrīdhī Pahārī Mahadānī, shining in the ornaments, the enlightened ones recognize the light in the ornaments, the enlightened ones recognize the great wisdom. When the inner eye opens, one beholds and attains the immortal sign, a radiant beam from the ocean of amṛta. Śrī Dīpā Harī Mahādānī, the glorious giver of the divine play, bestows amṛta, enchanting the hearts of devotees. By meditating on the sacred name, one attains everything; no one suffers loss. A radiant beam from the ocean of amṛta, Śrī Dīpā Harī Mahādānī. A radiant bundle of light, an ocean of amṛta, Śrī Dīpā Harī Mahādānī, Śrī Dīpa Dayālu, supremely compassionate and merciful, equal to all in existence, Śrī Mādhavan, whose glory is immense, beyond description, resounds throughout the entire world, resounds throughout the entire world—the immortal Lord’s... The story is a radiant beam, an ocean of amṛta, a mountain of great generosity. A radiant beam, an ocean of amṛta, a mountain of great generosity. O Kurījī, please bless us; O Devadhī, please bless us; O Sharma Devā, please bless us. Worship Bhagavān Sridipnār Mahāprabhujī. O Hinudārānsaṃ Rājaparakṛṣṇa, please bless us. O Viśva Guru Māleśa, revered Param Sammashan Jī, hail to the Guru Devā.
