Yoga and the five bodies

The individual is the king of the kingdom constituted by the five sheaths: the physical, energetic, mental, wisdom, and bliss bodies. Within this kingdom exist the ten sense organs and countless beings like cells and habits. The king, the soul, must govern through discipline, not become enslaved by citizens like negative habits or uncontrolled senses. Negligence leads to the kingdom's illness and disintegration. Mastery requires balancing the body and mind through the vital energy, cultivated by pure living, mantra, and meditation. Discipline is the foundation of yoga.

"Do not be the slave of your citizens. You have to equally control and take care of them."

"Your habits, your qualities, these are the horses."

Śubhaṁ karoti kalyāṇam ārogyaṁ sampadaḥ, śatru buddhi vināśāya, dīpa jyotir namastute. Dīpaṁ jyotiḥ paraṁ brahma dīpaṁ sarveṣāṁ mohanaṁ | dīpanāśyate sarvam sandhyā dīpaṁ śarāva satyam || Oṁ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ... It is a very beautiful day today, and we are here in this beautiful hall. We have opportunities to know more and more about yoga. Yoga is not only physical exercises, prāṇāyāma, and concentration. Yoga is the whole universe. That is why yoga means oneness. That is life, and that life is for eternal life. What we said first yesterday were the five kośas. These five kośas are the sheaths of nutrition, the food. The first is the physical body, the body of food (annamaya kośa). Then comes the energy (prāṇamaya kośa), the mind (manomaya kośa), the knowledge (vijñānamaya kośa), and the supreme (ānandamaya kośa). These five we call kośas. Kośas are like quarters: one quarter, second quarter, third quarter. Within these five kośas is the endless, the infinite. Und diese fünf kośas sind unendlich. We individuals, who we are, within these five kośas, we are the king or the god in this universe. Within these five kośas, there are ten principles. These are called the five organs of knowledge (jñānendriyas), which are the eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth (for taste), and the whole skin. And the five organs of action (karmendriyas). These are actions through the body: our hands, our legs, our speech, our excretion, and our procreation. In this kingdom, our kingdom is your ātmā, what you call the soul. In this kingdom, there are endless beings. Let us say, for example, all the different kinds of cells in the body. Even in one drop of blood, there are immense cells. They belong to our kingdom. Like what we call the genes. Once you have your blood or anything, for many, many years they can find it in your cells. Now you know that in Australia, the humans who were there—the Europeans came and killed them. But Australia is very big, and some remained; they were hidden somewhere. Some countries were saying these Aborigines in Australia are from this country, that country. Now, through the genes of these peoples, they found it is from the Indians. Their behaviors, some kind of culture, are with them. What they are doing, you will see if you go to Australia or have seen Australian pictures. The whole world is very little, but they all have some kind of movements and activities. The Aborigines in Australia have many, many languages because they were living in the bushes in little groups. Group-wise they were living. In many different parts of Australia, there were many different languages. I was making a journey through Australia, and there was one learned, very great person who was like an officer of the police for Aborigines. He knew many, many languages. He became my disciple, and other people also became disciples. But what I want to tell you is that they have, whenever they were happy or doing something, the practice of taking hot, white stones, rubbing them, and making a tilak here (on the forehead), and here, and on the stomach, and then they dance. The same thing, tilaks, they are doing in South India. In all the temples you will see they make tilak on the forehead, the arms, on the stomach. This means that in all genes, we have in these our genes from ages and ages, that one is our, what we call, the soul or jīva or whatever. Now, we have beautiful bhajans, and it is said: O jīva, O ātmā, you are the king of your kingdom. They are all your citizens, but you are the king. Do not be the slave of your citizens. You have to equally control and take care of them. But one day, when you become a slave of them—for example, you sit down and drink together, or play something—then your slaves will become your friend, and this friend can become your enemy. Then you will not be capable of controlling them. Our ātmā, our soul, our jīva in our body is the king of everything. If you cannot control all that, then you will be lost. So there became two parts. One part is the best part: good habit, good everything. Vichāra is called; vichāra means thinking. And one is negative, so we can say devas and rākṣasas. These are within us. Our bad habit is our enemy, and good habits are our best ones. Bad habits will lead us into hell, and good qualities will take us into heaven or into the universe. O King, take care and be in control. Your habits, your qualities, these are the horses. This habit is that our mind is controlling, and when our mind becomes negative and against our jīvā, our soul, then it will destroy you. So, where is that? This negative, your devils, they are your indriyas. There are ten indriyas. These five are the karmas that go the negative way, and then four or five, they are the knowledge way. Illness appears in our body mostly because we did not control our habits: in eating, in drinking, too much eating, many different things. Which, O King, you lost it yourself. That is why you will suffer, and who will suffer? Your country. So this is, your kingdom will fall apart into many pieces. No one will help you, and many of these will die in your kingdom. And what is this? These are the cells in our body which will attack our whole body, many organs. You will then have no more power. O Ātmā, O Jīva, then you will see that many things are lost, and you are alone, and you have to go alone. But your citizens, they will follow you, in positive or negative. Do not think that this is only one life. We have many, many lives until we go to the Brahmaloka. This is how we humans do not understand nowadays what is happening with us. So the first thing to take care of is called the principle. Patañjali said, "Atha yoga anuśāsanam." "Atha yoga anuśāsanam" means "anuśāsanam" means the discipline, and the discipline is the yoga, or you will be master of yoga through discipline. Atha yoga, atha yoga. So this is our principle we have to keep; then your yoga will be successful. Atha yoga anuśāsanam. Anuśāsanam means the discipline. Now, in our body, it is said. Gurujī’s, our Mahāprabhujī’s disciple Śivānandajī—when we are talking about Śivānanda, not only the Rishikesh Śivānanda, there are thousands of Swāmī Śivānandas. So there are many, many hundreds of Sivanandas now also. From here, one person’s... Why do you have so many names in your Austria? The women, how are they called? Many have the same names, don’t they? Yes, or the German, you know? Franz. So there are many Franzes. There are two villages, and they have the same name. But the same name is called the bigger village, and the other, the little village. At that time, the kings were still ruling, also like in Austria. You know how much Austria was controlling many countries. They now say, thanks to God, this Austrian, all kings have gone. Yes, it is. Every kingdom, everywhere. So after the Second World War, then all kings’ karma was finished. So, anyhow, we go in different ways. So, good karma. Aṣṭāṅga Yoga Anuśāsana. Anuśāsana. Anuśāsana here for me, what it means is the sleeping on time and sleeping well. If we sleep too much, then we call it lazy, and that is not good energy. Little sleeping is also not good. So our body has this; Patañjali said, Anuśāsan. When to get up, when to go, when to wash, when to clean. So do not blame anyone. Only you can blame thyself, your principle. The second thing is, we have a limitation. Sooner or later, life is gone. Here is one on the table, one thread, and this thread is going. Slowly, slowly, moving, moving... It’s gone out, slowly, slowly, and so we all will go. How many great, strong people were here, like musicians? Mozart, now, if they like Mozart or not, but there is a lot of commercial make. And we like chocolate, but the name of the Mozart. So there are good persons still living, and negative also. So, this is in the body, both health and the ill. Therefore, our knowledge, our knowledge, is that all jīvās do not do this and this. Annamaya kośa, prāṇamaya kośa, manomaya kośa, and then vijñānamaya kośa, vijñāna, the sun knowledge. So now, why should you blame anyone? Even do not blame your wife, or do not blame your husband. It is not their mistake. It is your mistake. So, if you said, "I have no mistake," then the wise person will say, "But still, it’s your mistake. I have not done." But she said, "Yes, you have. What do you mean?" If you are not here, this will not happen. So it’s your mistake also, you were here. So we are all here. So we are guilty, and we are not guilty. This is what we, in this part of the yoga, and it is called mantra, is coming in this part, what I am talking. But yesterday I began, and I told you: so mantra. Mantra is everything. When we put a seed in the earth, it sprouts. Then comes up, and beautiful flowers, and coming fruit, seeds, etc. So this is the process which is coming and going. But sometimes your aim, what is your decision, you have not realized. So we are going wrong again. So in yoga we said, do not blame anyone, and we will be ill, we will be ill, because that time is gone. Now you see all leaves are falling, and to whom should we blame? It will come again new. So we as humans, we are the king of our kingdom. I bought this bhajan; afternoon I will sing perhaps, and tomorrow from these bhajans, so I will mantra. So, man is the mind, and all this, what we did, the mistakes or good, is in the mind. The first step is our physical body, the annamaya kośa. But that cannot go further. It needs some support, and that’s called prāṇa, prāṇamaya kośa. Annamaya kośa is nourishment. Now, which kind of food are you taking? That one will lead us in that direction. So, how you will drink and eat, that will be in your mind. But between the body and mind, there is a big, big, yeah, something like a river, a river or a mountain between. It is a big barrier. Barrier, thank you. So, a good translator can do both. That is the best. So, annamaya kośa and manomaya kośa, the physical food and everything, and mind, these are the two. But the other one is called prāṇa. And prāṇa is very strong, very, very strong. But still, you or we are putting something negative. And so, alcohol, the drugs, the meat, the eggs, fish. I was in this old house. Yes. And you know, my Gurujī said, I told Gurujī, "I can’t smell anything." I told him, so Gurujī said, "Yes, otherwise you will not go everywhere. And you should go; you have a duty to make good." Guruji was coming when he came to Europe, and we were sitting in an aeroplane, we said, "Guruji and me," and as the aeroplane took off, then a glory came, and bottles which were poison, you want to drink. All different kinds of alcohol, and as they opened, and Gurujī took his shawl and he said, "Tell them, don’t open alcohol." I said, "Gurujī, I can’t stop this. Only you can do something. Anyone who takes one drop will fall down." So all alcohol was poisoned, and then came meat. Gurujī said, "I was so high up in the airplane, I thought I would see some God." But that is in Naraka. So I said, "Gurujī, I can’t smell." He said, "That’s why Mahāprabhujī sent you." Yes, it is true, you know. So this kind of smell is for the illness. So I was in this house, and we were three or four people there, and they just opened something, fish for the people who were there. And Umā Purī said, "Swāmījī, let’s go. I can’t stand here, the whole fish... I do not know how fish is." So I don’t know what is smelling. I smell only one. And that is about a very strong, what do you call it? Kampā. That burns my nose, that’s all. So that is not good for the jīvā, the soul. For the humans, but people now, they say he is mentally. But let’s come to the jīvas again. So the energy, the power between body and mind, that energy is the energy of the alcohol. And that makes so much energy, it can spoil everything. So we should have pure, hard energy. Now, the mind. The mind is the mighty one. Mind can destroy everything, and mind can make everything good. The mind can go very speedily anywhere. For example, I will tell you something, and you will be there within no time. So I will say Jupiter. Before translation, there is the Jupiter. Your mind is already there, and so quick is the mind. Now, the mind can save us, and the mind can kill us. So there are two things. So it is said, before you speak something... You tell something, and these are three things. You attack negatively immediately, or you talk, or you will destroy everything. The mind. So it is said that before you speak, wait, your waging your word wages in your heart. This word, what I give, dotting, writing, sending letters, anything for you, it is nothing because anger will come there. But further, it can be very big. For example, they press only a button from, I don’t know, from how many kilometers, and... One bomb, then this whole Europe can be destroyed. That is the power. That is the power. And so, take care of what is in your heart first. Should I or should I not? And at that time, take the viveka. No. It will be more and more exploding inside. But it will say no, and the best thing at that time is to drink cold water. And if still you can’t, then drink onion water. Cold water, yes. And if not this, then two, three... Knoblauch, what is it? Yeah, make powder. Bring it near the nose, and then put it in the mouth. All this negativity will go away. That is very important, but it is not easy, what I tell. It is very easy for me to tell this, what I am talking about. I can also say sometimes, and I know that I should not talk. But this is, so this is the physical body, then the energy body. And energy is that one, like alcohol and drugs and this and that. And between this body and the jīvā, the mind is that energy which should be controlled through prāṇāyāma, mantra, meditation, etc. So that’s why it is said that when you come home, at least for one or five minutes, just meditate. Only think thyself, peace, peace. And that’s why the ṛṣis made this principle. Morning, make mantra. This mantra means also prayer. Lunchtime also prayer, and evening also we said prayer. At that time, these three times in our body, it’s coming; sāttvic vibration is coming in our body. We know that in your office and somewhere, all are not so good, and so we are this and that. So we have negative energy inside, and therefore we should sing something, pray something, chant your mantra, or meditate. This is for every day. And if your wife doesn’t want you to be meditating, because then you will be very calm, she goes to the bathroom to wash her hands peacefully, just for a few minutes. Touch with water. Water is the greatest thing. When you touch the water, see how great the energy in this water is. When we wake up in the morning and we touch our hands with the water, I say, "Oh." The water has a big power, a very big power, like earth, or fire, or the air, the water. These are all elements, and they are very strong. I made one water tank, like this big, in Nippel Ashram, on the third floor, so that water can come for everyone. But the one who constructed the building had no knowledge about water tanks. So it was beautiful, very good, and so on. And we think water is nothing, but he filled the water. You know how much pressure is given from the water? And the wall became the beginning of the fall. And the tank also, so water is so strong, so strong. And air too. You have a very big truck here, which has about 40 big wheels, and one big truck. And on what is it rolling? Air. And when it explodes, it’s like some big bamboo. So the air is so strong, we can’t imagine. Our airplane is lifting up. Who is that? The air. And that’s why we call it an aeroplane. And in Germany, in the German language, there are many, many words from Sanskrit. I didn’t say that you should go now. Don’t take off. Now, you know that the German airline, the airline of the Germans, is called Lufthansa. And what is their emblem on the aeroplane? That’s called the Haṁsa. So Luft is the air, and that is also what we call the air. And Haṁsa, is that the swan or any bird? So it’s called Luft Haṁsa. And then, what does that mean? Another meaning of this? Luft Hansa, it means disappears in the air. You can’t see it anywhere. So it is gone, that air. So, Lufthansa. So Gurujī said, oh, this is a good name. So, anyhow, all five elements are very important in our body and have to be taken properly, in exact balance. That’s why in yoga we have what we call prāṇāyāma. And that is called prāṇa. Prana is life, life is water, water is air, so is that. So, mind. The mind is not only in humans, animals too. Yes, and animals, big animals, if you did something wrong, they will not let you out. So they are all, among other animals, animals, humans, fighting, fighting, fighting. So that if you fight, if we are fighting, then we are more animals, not humans. So mantra: man, the mind. Mind is the mighty, and tra means expanding. Yes, mantra, but also it means that the mind is like water, thirsty. So man and tra, these are two. Our mind, so mind is not the soul, but mind. That’s why mantra, and "tra" means relax. So that when we chant the mantra, then there should be positive words, positive mantras. When we sing bhajan, that is also a try. "Try" means, "Help me, liberate me." And so when we sing, we don’t need translation. Everyone has the same resonance. Or the flute, or any instrument. Everyone here is equal and beautiful. So that is called mantra. Now we can do some mantra. So, should we have a Czech mantra or a Slovakian one? Croatia? Yugoslavia? Or German? Or Austrian? Or Indian? Which mantra would you like to sing? Indian? No, we can sing the Yugoslavian. This today is good. Is there anybody Yugoslavian, Croatian? One, two, three. My God, the common Soviet mushrooms. One more. Yeah, come here, please. You all come. Slovenian, Croatian, any part of Yugoslavia, come here please. Yes, this is called the sound, the resonance. And what this resonance feels to the body. So come here. Thumb, thumb... thuddy, quickly, quickly. So now, though you will not understand, you will feel the resonance. No, but this was not that, but that song, this is that. Can you translate it? You translate. Yes. You translate it. About the song, it is thanks to some person who gives a lot of sunshine. And all the time we think about you, Swamijī. Me too. We think about you. Thank you. Other one, what was the translation? Oh yeah, yeah. It was about the name of the song is "Day of Love," and it means that we never know when this day will come, but we should never lose hope, and this is the day which takes... Everything from you, and it gives you everything. And we never know when this happy day will come, but we should never give up hope on this day that gives us everything we want. Okay, thank you. Very good. There are many beautiful songs from every country, you know. Very nice, very nice. Is there any song of Salzburg? Salzburg is kind of a song? Ah, yes. The whole world knows. Only the name of that person. At least remember the chocolate. Now you see Mozart, you see. See Salzburg? Salzburg is completely today in mantra. Okay? So, let’s chant the mantra. Oṁ Tryambakaṁ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṁ Puṣṭi Vardhanam, Urvārukam Iva Bandhanān Mṛtyor Mukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt. Oṁ Tryambakaṁ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṁ Puṣṭi Vardhanam, Urvārukam Iva Bandhanān Mṛtyor Mukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt. Which mantra more? Gāyatrī Mantra. Now, one moment. Now we have to think between three. Mantra, body, energy, and mind. So how can we, through this energy which is in between, balance the body and the mind? So this is the body. Through our power, our energy, our thoughts, we can balance harmony, goodness, relaxation, everything in our body, from our energy. And that also, we balance our mind so that the mind can balance our body, and the body can balance our mind. And between is the energy, so we are on the energy and balancing in between. So, Gāyatrīpā, okay? Gāyatrī Mantra. Begin.
