Mantra for harmony

A spiritual discourse exploring the multifaceted nature and power of mantra.

"Man is the mind, and tra is also called the desire. And that can be negative or positive. And this mantra can make good and bad."

"Every bhajan is full of wisdom. That is a mantra... it is very, very important that we have positive respect, love, and harmony. That is the best mantra."

Swami Ji leads a satsang, explaining that mantra originates from the mind and can be any powerful speech, from a wife's worrying words to sacred chants. He discusses fear, cultural differences between India and Europe, and shares anecdotes, including one from the 1970s about cultural exchange. The talk weaves through themes of spirituality, the role of the Guru, and concludes with the recitation of sacred mantras.

We are thinking and speaking about mantra. But mantra comes from "man," and man is our mind. All humans have fear in different ways. Fear is one of the biggest powers, and we cannot get rid of it. From birth, from childhood, we have fear from our friends, neighbors, and animals. Furthermore, from learning: some have no fear of going to school; they are happy. But they have the fear of learning—whether they will pass or not. Or fear towards mother or father, or sister or brothers. Furthermore, there comes the fear for our work and profession. It means that day by day, this fear is coming into our body, making a permanent residence. Fear from illness, illness from fears. Some people even commit suicide. So the fear is so strong that one can even give his own life. Or the business person: you have a very good business, a lot of money coming. But now, from this money, you have fear. Nowadays it’s like this: someone has the money, but suddenly someone creates in you the fear. One makes a telephone call, tells only two or three words, and it’s finished. Someone calls again: "That someone will come to you." Nothing more. Now, in this modern world, we have many good friends. They call one word, very little, not too much. They say only a small word, not too much. Called māyā. Yes. And "mā" means limited, and "yā" means fear. The whole night will be restless. And you know that more than me, because many of you are in Salzburg; they are rich people. They were, for a long, long time, selling the salt. Yes. Anyhow, sorry, it was a joke. So the fear, the fear from your wife, really, really, nowadays is a big fear. So the men get the phobia, yes, angst, from the women. And more and more in the world, this phobia is getting more and more. But the man is more powerful, and many, many women have the fear, a lot. Yes, the man is afraid. He has angst, the fear. You know what? If I get one child and my wife goes away, the three of us—I have to feed myself, my wife, and the child. So, you know how the man is. So, from these, many men are not happy now to get a child. Another way also, that women have fear: if my husband will leave us and go away. This is a very good story, and that happens now, slowly, slowly becoming. It was in 1976 or 1977. In 1976 or 1977, a few Westerners went with me to India. You know what I’m talking about? Mantra. When your wife tells something that is so strong, mantra, the whole night the husband cannot sleep. Mantra. Or the opposite. So there were a few boys and a few ladies or women, girls. And it is natural. When there are a few women coming together and one man... Slowly, slowly, the women are talking with the women. And men are coming and talking differently. No one is talking negatively. But women have a way to talk, and men have a way to talk. So we were in a big city called Jodhpur, and there were bhaktas of Gurujī, and they invited us for lunch. So we were about 15. And then the neighbors, people, and friends came, so there were nearly 40 people. And there was only one household woman. But the Indian women have a miracle. Men don’t know how they are doing. And when more people come as guests, then the wife will say, "Now you go to another room and talk there, don’t disturb me." And for fifty people, fresh, good food, she is preparing within one and a half hours. Not only ṛṣi-piṣi, not only khichḍī. She will have good chapatis, good soup, good halwā, two vegetables, etc. That is the power of women, because they have this quality. We have also in Europe quality, of course. There is nothing to say. Good, not only many, all. But they have another quality. When they know that people come here, a few friends, on my birthday, then they are cooking for three days, four days. And then they have the freezer, so this is that. This is the difference. The Indian women or the European women, they are cooking very good and very much and everything, but they cannot cook all this in one and a half hour. This is the difference. And you know, when I am talking about women, they rather speak slowly, so that all don’t hear. Well, let’s come further. Mantra. And I have not forgotten what I want to talk about. Mantra has many definitions. If someone made something wrong or this, and they will say, the police comes in your house. The mantra, this is a mantra. And that mantra is going throughout the whole body, and the hair is standing on end. Which mantra do you want, please, everybody, today? Good mantra, yes? Yes, you got all very good mantras. And bad mantras you don’t want. That someone will call you, "I am coming there." Well, you see, there are different kinds of talk. One is a philosophy, something about this and that and everything. The science, medicines, etc., and the satsaṅg is something. It goes through from the brain to the toes and from the toes to the brain. In relaxation and in good things. And in that, if you cannot laugh, it has no color in it. So it is like this, we have very good cooking, but besides, again we have something, and that we call the chutney, which is very sharp. And the women are preparing it for one year. And when the good friends come, so many chapatis, puris, halwas, dals, rice, parathas, etc., many things. And that in three hours, please, not overnight. And then, extra, they bring something, and that’s called a chutney. After all, we go and touch our chapati to the chutney. And very hot, very tasteful. They like it. So you know, that’s someone who is talking something negative but with sweet words. So there is a person among many people, and few are they, and good and like, but inside is like a spy. And so people said, "Yeah, you see, this is a spy." So don’t ask at home, "Have you chutney?" Then the household lady will say, "No, we don’t have chutney, we have all sweet." Now, you still don’t understand what I want to tell you. I am giving the glory to the women. Yes, yes. You will understand what? We have one here, an Indian lady. Her husband knows, "How is my wife?" Yes. Well, so few boys and men were talking about something, and I’m also sitting there. I am giving some lectures, and Gurujī is there, our holy Gurujī. And when I am sitting there, then holy Gurujī closes the eyes and he makes mantras. And he tells me, "You should talk." You can’t imagine. My thighs are… What can I talk in front of my Master? But Gurujī was… Then I knew that it is Gurujī’s… his closing eyes and making mala, but in his whole power, everything, from physical body till the spiritual, everything is power coming in my body. So, I don’t want to talk very much, but when Gurujī gives me power, He’s almost closing His eyes and making mantra. And then Gurujī said, "Now stop talking, I’m hungry." Well, these two, three girls from Europe, they were coming with us, me, and they all went in the kitchen. They wanted to see how she was making chapatis and this and that. And they started talking. So, the Indian lady said to the other one, "Are you married?" She said, "No." "How old are you?" "I’m 35 years old." And still you didn’t marry me, and they are talking. She said, "Why didn’t your parents ask you to do something in marriage?" She said, "No, it’s not like that. I had a boyfriend." Many come, and then I don’t like, or he doesn’t like, so we didn’t marry. And the Indian lady had the little finger. Oh God! You are not married and live with one boy? And not only with one? Oh God! And he said, "There’s no problem." Indian said, "No." We will have one, and we will marry, and my parents will help with everything, on both sides, and we are very happy. So there was a very peaceful, harmonious family. But since that time, those girls from Europe learned something from other girls, and so they gave some Mantra Dīkṣā to the European ladies and to the Indian. "You should have a mantra." She said, "What?" "You must try, which is better for you or for this." She said, "Don’t talk like this in my house." But the mantra was so powerful, so even if you don’t practice... but this girl was talking, "I think I should also live like this." And now problems are happening in India, 35%. Because she was 35, that girl was European. And now, but she and the Indian, the European girl, she learned from the Indian lady. Yes, we should have a really good, what we call, a couple. And in Europe, you can’t imagine that very, very much they are like what we were thinking in India. So the Europeans have turned in that way. And Indians are now making jokes about Europeans. But what spoils the Indian culture is the Indian television. Completely, completely. That’s completely. So that’s called Kali Yuga. So, Kali Yuga will turn in this way. So, I have three Indians here. So one is with us, here is our sister, here in front of me. And two boys, gentlemen, are behind. One is the captain of the army. He can go so quickly through the streets of Salzburg with an airplane. Yes, he can go like this. Careful! So, anyhow, now he will, he will, he learned today, in the street. He saw the street, he was in the street, he saw the people in the hotel, in the ashram, in the other part where they were, in Italy and many. They have learned how many people have discipline, very disciplined. Yes, and my India, that’s called my India, you see. So, India is like everyday flowers are opening. Yes, and in the night it closes. Which kind is that? Lotus. So, my dear, culture is moving. And spirituality, you have very good spirituality in your country, but you have lost it. You go to church, you are looking at this, but mostly you are not. And if you go to the Indians, in India, you people go, you would like to go to their temple and see. But there is still spirituality. I am telling you this mantra. The Indians think that Westerners have no spirituality and religion. But now they will see how religious they are, how much spirituality they have in their heart. And in India, we have also very much. But there are three occasions: birth, marriage, and death. Between is nothing. That’s it. So spirituality has come through yoga, through the whole world. And there are many, many good yogīs out there. They came, they are teaching. So this is one kind of mantra. So, how can your friend or your wife give you one mantra? How many days can you not sleep? Or when you say something to your wife once, she cannot sleep for weeks and weeks. So similarly, there is a mantra which gives somebody good words. Someone gives you good information that your son or your daughter or your wife or your husband, etc. So there is one very nice poem. So it is the great saint, he is called Tulsīdās. And he was writing the Rāmāyaṇa. So the Rāmāyaṇa was written 150,000 years ago or more. And that is from one great saint called Vālmīki. And Vālmīki was before God Rāma. And he wrote everything, the story of God Rāma, before his birth. Every day, what will happen? And so he wrote in Sanskrit. This is called the Rāmāyaṇa, Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, and it’s in Sanskrit. We lost much about the Sanskrit language, so many people cannot understand. Therefore, Tulsīdās said, "I will write in the normal, the public language." So he said, "It is from Vālmīki, but I try to make it so that we will understand." But Tulsīdharājī was a great poet too, and very great. So, about, let’s say, 1.82 meters, because others say he was very, very big. Ok. You see, when we have a very good dinner, then we must have a chutney. So, from time to time, I give the chutney to Rādhā. So that we all awake. Tulsīdās has given two beautiful poems. And it is said: "Āv nahīṁ, ādar nahīṁ, nayanana meṁ nahīṁ, Tulasī us ghar na jāye, cāhe kañcana varṣe meṁ." Translation, you know this, yes? Of course you know. The two brothers are sitting there anyhow. So, āv nahī̃, ādar nahī̃. There is no respect and no welcoming. And there is no beauty or happiness in our eyes. O Tulsīdās, don’t go in that house. Even if the diamonds are falling down in your house. We don’t want this, but then he gives, at the same time, the second point. That respect, welcome, and very beautiful light and welcoming in the eyes. O Tulsīdās, you should go in that house. Even their stones are falling. So, diamonds falling, but don’t go there. And so, words they may, but in there, welcoming, respect, and happiness in face and eyes, that is yours. Even if the stones are falling, we should go and wish them. So the mantra, everything, every poem, and every person who comes, it is said that it is very, very important that we have positive respect, love, and harmony. That is the best mantra. So every bhajan is full of wisdom. That is a mantra. And if you want to know more mantras, then it is said, the sense: "Guru Brahmā, Guru Viṣṇu, Guru Deva Maheśvara, Guru Sākṣāt Parabrahma, Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ." Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and all the saints, if they are coming, what mantra or respect or what Gurudev can give the Gurudev, the Guru. Therefore, it is said, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Gurudev also have a Guru. So, like, for example, Jesus. Jesus had a master, a guru. Yes, and still Jesus did not say that I am a guru. And he didn’t say that I can do all, no. Always and always and always, Jesus was calling and calling the Father. This mantra, you know, everybody. So the money, mukta money. Yesterday I talked about Muktamani, no? Yes. So what is Mukta? Liberated. Mukta means free of everything. Very clear, very good. The whole heart is peaceful. That’s called Mukta. So the Mukta is that one which is liberated. And all of us would like to become a Mukta, a liberator. But the real Master will not give you the Mokṣa till the end of life. When we will get that, "I am liberated one," and tomorrow what you do some wrong, then what is happening? So first, it has to have a Guru’s grace, Guru. And who have no Guru, and you are just talking yourself, many, many lectures and this and that, but still it is called dry. But where you have the gurus, you are like fluttering over the ocean. So therefore, it is Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Maheśa, all and all and all, they had a Guru. And we have now also everyone, and we have different kinds of Guru. And in Western countries, without gurus, you can’t get any work. So, for example, you have a car and you can drive, and you are driving. And you made an accident. They will say, "Where is your certificate?" I don’t have, I don’t want. Okay, then come with us. Electric worker? In Europe, India, we can have anybody. But here you cannot touch. So, this is mukta, and then money. Money means not rupees, no euros. She thinks that I am money, money, money. This we will do tomorrow, because many people are going now. Bow. You see, when I am talking to the Holy Gurujī, then the Holy Gurujī will tell me, "Finished." So this is mantra. "Man" is the mind, and "tra" is also called the desire. And that can be negative or positive. And this mantra can make good and bad. So there are some people who will give you bad, not good mantras. Therefore, we should all tell every morning when you get up, and you say to your wife, "Good morning, darling." And she will also say, "My dear, I love you." And then he will say, "Don’t talk too much, make breakfast." Then he says, "Don’t talk too much, make breakfast." Namaśivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ. Oṁ. Har Har. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Har Har. Namaśivāya. Oṁ Namaśivāya. Oṁ... Namasivāya Om... Namasivāya Om Namasivāya Dev Puruṣa Bhagavān, Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān, Satya Sanātana, Oṁ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ.
