How to think of black magic

A satsang discourse debunking fear-based beliefs around black magic and ghosts through storytelling.

"People are very much frightened. They speak of ghosts and such things, and many claim they can take away the black magic which is supposedly on you."

"If we believe in God, then believe in God. God will give everything. God will never do anything negative for us."

Swami Ji narrates two cautionary tales to illustrate how fear and superstition are exploited. The first story tells of a village magician who manipulates a grieving widow, and the second describes a 'ghost' that turns out to be a moonlit chimney. He emphasizes that true spiritual practice, such as having a Guru Mantra and faith, offers protection, concluding that it is one's own fear, not external forces, that causes suffering.

Welcome, everyone who has come today. This morning, we had many beautiful thoughts to talk about, and also today. In this world, and in every country, there are so many black magicians. People are very much frightened. They speak of ghosts and such things, and many claim they can take away the black magic which is supposedly on you. In the Satguru Chalīsā, our Holy Gurujī said: Jantar Mantra, Jādu Ṭonā, Guru Bhakt Ke Kusne Hona—Jantar Mantra. So, these are the jantar and mantra through which people send negative ideas and negative thoughts. Jantar, mantra, jādu, ṭonā—it means some kind of magic. Many people in the world become very, very involved in this negative magic, etc. If we believe in God, then believe in God. God will give everything. God will never do anything negative for us. But some people, who are gaining some kind of power to get money and influence, it gives you more and more fear. There are many black magicians who say, "Don't go there, don't do this, don't keep this in your house." There are two beautiful stories. The First Story: The Magician and the Widow There was a little village with some black magicians. All the village people were afraid. Whenever they had problems, they would go to that person. He would come and say, "Oh, that is very terrible, but I will do this and I will do that." He would claim, "Look, that is going away," and like this, he would take money and leave. There was the mayor of the village—in those times they were called kings. He had a beautiful house, properties, and all was very nice. That king had only one son. The son went to England to study. When he began to learn there, he found there is no such thing as this blackmailing. He met a good master, a guru, who showed him these things are just nothing. The guru said, "If you don't believe, I can take out that power. If you are very strong, open the windows. All magic goes out. We can leave it." So, the prince learned everything very well. All the windows were open. There was no magic, only good things and good air. In that village, the king died. There was a man in the village who performed ceremonies. Just as you go to the graveyard to give flowers and believe, and cry—"Oh, grandmother, oh babička, my baby"—and cry for many years, even though she is already reborn and has become a girl and married, still we all go there. Now, this magician said to the wife of the king, who was crying and crying, "My husband died! My husband died!" He said, "Yes, now more and more you must cry. You must love your husband, and your husband had very nice qualities. You know, your husband is very sad because he has a beautiful bed for sleeping, made of very nice wood, comfortable, and here people are lying on the ground, freezing. The good people, who have good quality, will close the windows so everyone is comfortable." This magician told the wife, "Please, what to do? You give his belongings to me, and I will send them to heaven for him." She said, "Please take all—the water jar, the light, carpet, many pillows, everything. Also the electric blanket, everything, give it out." This lady said, "Yes, please." He asked, "When should I give it there? Tomorrow?" He said, "Negative energy can come again, day or night. Just let it out now." And she said, "Yeah, my husband is so happy now. Oh, my darling. Oh, my darling. Dobronoc." Then the magician asked, "What do you feel?" She replied, "Oh, my king, my husband, I am so happy." He then said, "My husband was giving everyone donations. And now all negative energy is here. You have to give all, whatever money, give it to the king, because he will be the king and the richest one there." So, this woman gave all money, everything. Well, the next day he came again. "You had some very beautiful silver items—a tobacco water pump. He always smoked with this water pump. The others say, 'He's a king, he should do good.'" And this magician took everything from her. Then, one week after, again the magician came. "God, I know there is something wrong. Oh, you have a beautiful cow, and she gave birth to a very nice baby. That milk of that cow, only pure cow milk, he used to drink. He doesn't take any milk from anyone. So what can I do? You give it to me, I will send it to heaven, this cow." So the magician took the cow. Well, after two or three weeks, the son returned. There were no airplanes then, only boats. His mother was crying. He said, "Mother, don't worry." Then he said, "I want to go to my father's room to make praṇām." There was nothing there. "Where is my father? His bed?" His mother said, "Yes, my son, there is this man, and he is so kind. He took everything from this room and sent it to heaven so that your father has a nice setup." Well, he didn't want to make his mother sad. Then he said, "We will make some kind of ceremony. How much money do we have?" She said, "All is gone to your father. He is the richest in heaven. This money went to heaven. He has this. It is a very good paṇḍit, and so many mantra he has." The son said, "Okay." Then he asked, "There was a beautiful walking stick with silver and gold and diamonds. Where is that stick, mother?" Of course, it was gone. The mother explained, "When your father died, immediately the devils came in. But this pundit was so good, and he needed that stick because he had one of the best walking sticks." Then he said, "Mother, we had a beautiful cow, and you wrote me a letter that the cow is going to have a baby very soon. It is a beautiful cow." "Yes, yes, my son, yes." "That magic saint, because your father only drank this cow's milk, and with the little cow, this cow, all took the Paṇḍitjī. The cow also went to heaven." "Yes, my son." He said, "But one thing is good, mother, that he didn't take you also to heaven. I was waiting for you. Mother, don't worry." Now he arranged a ceremony and invited many people. There were some people who eat meat, so for them he made meat offerings. Why? Because, he claimed, your father said in heaven that sometimes he was eating meat, and he can't stay in heaven without eating it. So he called all the people who were eating meat. But he also said sometimes he had pure cow milk. "Okay, I will make a ceremony, Mother." Now he made beautiful offerings—good, sattvic, vegetarian food of all kinds. Everyone was very happy. But it is said these magicians eat only milk and good things. Yet the son said, "My father said they have to eat meat today." The other Paṇḍits said, "We don't eat meat." The prince said, "No, no, no. My father is waiting for the meat. You are always bringing everything there. But now, today, my father wants to drink alcohol and eat meat." The others were eating beautiful, all-vegan food. The prince said, "I will put you all in this house like a prison. Eat, eat, my father is hungry." They told him, "No, no one can bring meat there." Then the prince asked, "How did money go there? We didn't send money. His bed? No, no, you can't take it to heaven. And my cow? Of course, it cannot go to heaven. So who was it? Only this one magic man." Then he had the magician tied to a pillar. "Eat the meat for one week here. My father is all hungry." The magician said, "I cannot." The prince demanded, "How did you bring the cows and all property? It's in your room. Bring it back." And then he put the magician in a lifelong prison. So, people who give such negative words, they say it's magic and magic. It is a complete whitewash, and you become completely brainwashed. So, if anyone wants to say they will give you something good, but claim that in your house you have this and that—why? This is very important: every one of you has the Guru Mantra. Nobody can do anything. And if you don't have a Guru Mantra, you have no spiritual progress; still, no one can do anything to you. You are a human, and if you succumb, then you will suffer. From this fear, day by day, you will see your life will become very terrible. Only that fear will make your life worse and worse, day by day. So nobody should think like that. The Second Story: The Ghost in the Chimney Now, there is a second story. They said, "If you don't believe, we will show you. There is a ghost." But there is no ghost. Many people said, "There is." Many people left the village. They removed the house. It is really a case of blackmail. One day, a farmer gave a feast for his daughter's wedding. They kept the daughter in the house. The second house was like a hut. All people stayed in the home. The husband, who was just married, was given a nice room there alone. Some people from the village said, "František, in that house is a ghost." That's all. This is called blackmailing. Don't tell anything. Don't tell too much. As little as possible is more. This young man was just married, but it was the tradition that he could take his wife only when he went to his own village. At eleven o'clock at night, his brother-in-law went with him to show the room—a beautiful room, nice bed, everything, water. He said, "Okay, thank you." When he went in, he locked the door and all the windows. Though he was a very strong boy, about 28 or 30, he was afraid of sleeping. So he covered himself with the whole blanket and kept looking sometimes. Even when the wind moved the leaves of the tree outside, he would think, "Oh God." What happened about 2:30 at night? The moon rose. There was a little window, and there was a chimney—a white heater chimney. Before he left, his brother-in-law had said, "If you need more blankets, you can take them from here." It was a very big, white chimney. When the moon was reflecting on the chimney, he thought, "A ghost is standing!" He closed his eyes and screamed, "Screaming, help, help, ghost, ghost!" All the people who were near, all the village people came. He cried, "Please help, I'm killing, he's killing me!" But nobody dared to come in; they were all outside. "Oh God!" So one man came—the magician, who always had these stupid ideas about magic. "Peaceful. The ghost is very cruel, very strong. He can kill the whole village within no time. He can kill us. But I will do the mantra, I will let him go." And he made the mantras. "Nothing is my God. Ghost is a very great..." and all people were not cold. Then he said, "Bring the Gaṅgā water." So they threw Gaṅgā water through the window. Nothing happened. They asked, "Is something happening?" He said, "Yes, this ghost is so terrible. He is urinating here, very terrible." Then someone, like someone such as Saroj, brought some agarbattis and made smoke. Nothing happened. "This ghost is one of the most terrible. You have to purify your house, burn everything." Nothing was happening. Then one person came at four o'clock. For two and a half hours they were all screaming. So, one person here—like our Vasant Purī—Vasant's wife said, "Get up, what is there? Tell them there is no ghost." So Vasant came. He said, "What are you doing the whole night? Disturbed people cannot sleep." They said, "Vasant, you always said, 'There is no ghost.' And see, now your grandfather is here, a ghost. Look, Vasant, go. Go." He said, "There is no ghost." But they said, "You can see, here he is." He said, "No problem. Open the door." But the young man was frozen on his bed. He could not get up, and everybody said that a ghost was sitting on him. So, Vasant opened the door. They were telling him, "Please open the door, open the window," but the young man said, "I cannot. The ghost is sitting on me, killing me." Vasant opened the door, and what happened? That young man threw his blanket away, ran to the window, and jumped out. Now everybody said, "Oh, my God, the poor boy just married tonight." Vasant said, "Look, here it is." Then they all went together. Nobody dared to go inside, so Paṇḍit Vasiṣṭha Vasant took a torchlight and walked in. "This is the chimney? Oh God, you threw the water there. So where is the ghost? No ghost." So it is only someone trying to give us such a kind of fear. Now, you see some people there, they are killing their children. Just now, somewhere I heard, because the ghost said, and that they are suffering—there is no ghost. So don't think that anyone can do magic on you. For them, it's just: you have your guru, or your priest, or your religion, whichever God you believe in, be there. Nothing can happen. That's why you have a cross in front of your throat or your Mālā. No ghosts are there. No ghosts. So you are a yogī. You have prāṇas, power; no one can come close to you, nothing, nothing, nothing. So this is very important: no ghost, no blackmailing. They are making fear, and from this fear one becomes very weak. Understand me? That's very important. Therefore, when you have mantra, you have bhajans, you have gurus, you have a satsaṅg, you have your village, you have your country, you have your parents, you have all friends—who can kill you through the magic? No, no. But killed is your fear. Our fear is killing us, and you can't, you don't know, they can't tell you what it is. There was one disciple, my disciple, and she was completely mental. Then she thought, "Everywhere is something killing me." And she died under the table without any dress, from fear. After some days we opened the door. From this, she died from fear. Many know. So many people are... in the beginning you think, oh, they did very good for me, very good, but now it's your chance. Now you will become trapped inside. Therefore, we can say we have our religion, we have a church, we have a mosque, we have a temple, we have our religion, our God, our holy books, all our bhajans. We are God's children, and God will not do like that. We must be happy and not be fearful. And those who are like this, fearful, will be experiencing very negative things. From their fear, they are killing themselves. That is so. These are the two stories which I told. That's it. This you can take back again, yeah? I read your whole book, whole book I read it. Take it back again. This is my, my magic. This is my magic. It's a crocodile, many things like this. Therefore, in many ways, humans are sometimes very weak people. Yes, in the night, don't go anywhere because there are some wild animals, that's all, but no ghost. That's it.
