Body is important

A satsang on yoga, self-inquiry, and daily spiritual practice.

"Who are you? I am knocking on your door. I want to know, who are you?"

"Go within thyself and meditate and meditate... Can we meditate every day for at least five minutes?"

He uses the analogy of peeling an onion to question identity and shares a story about a disciple misguidedly helping a snail to illustrate the limits of action. The talk emphasizes morning rituals, reverence for parents and guru, and warns against the distractions of wine, women, and wealth.

Oṁ Devadhī Deva, Deveśvara Mahādeva kī, Ārādhi Bhagavān Śrīdīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī kī, Satguru Svāmī Madhvarānjī Bhagavān kī, Satya Sanātana Dharma kī, Jaya. Om Śānti, Śānti, Śānti. Om Namah Siri Prabhu. Om Namah Siri Prabhu Dīpanayanam. Am Sab Das Prabhu Sar Śaraṇ Parayanam. Am Seri Prabhu Dīpa. Aum. Sab Dās Prabhu Sar Parāyaṇam Śrī Prabhupāda, Śrī Prabhupāda,... Śrī Prabhupāda,... Śrī Prabhupāda. Oh Śrī Prabhu, dee hama sab dāsa Prabhu śaraṇa parāyaṇa. Hama sab dāsa Prabhu śaraṇa parāyaṇa. I was speaking about yoga in Hindi. Within yoga, there are many different techniques for the yogīs and the ṛṣis. Some people think we speak of the wrong yoga, but there is yoga and yoga. One word is yoga, but there is more to yoga. Therefore, Patañjali says, "Atha yoga anuśāsanam." Atha yoga. Why didn't he just say yoga? For example, in Patañjali's system, there is yama, niyama, āsana, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra, dhāraṇā, and samādhi. We are practicing yoga. It is not only the physical body, but it is said the body is nothing, yet without the body is also nothing. We think our body is just material. What more do you know about material? This material is that which comes together with the five elements. The space—do you know the space? Of course, we know the space. Are you in the space? Is the space within the self? Yes, eternal, within our body, self, yogī, eternal. And beyond that also is the space. In the space, the conscious, that consciousness that is within—is the conscious within us, or are we within the consciousness? Also not. The question arises. Jaḍ kī jaḍ jo hai—again I am coming to the Hindi words—the conscious cannot do anything, and neither can the space. Then, how do we come to exist here? So within these two, that is what is in the prāṇa of our environment, of the space in the earth. That consciousness is within, with us forever, but we don't know where. Space, light, which we call the fire, we call the jyotis, agni, vāyu. The agni cannot exist without the air and cannot exist without water. The Agni is in the water element, and therefore the water. In the water is a fire, and the fire is activated through the air. If there is no air, nothing will happen. That’s why it is said, Pavanaputra Hanumān, once when he was jumping towards Laṅkā, and suddenly someone came and couldn’t make any kind of air there. Hanumānjī was just lying there, couldn’t move at all. So he said, "Father, Pavanasuta Hanumān." And therefore, that was the sun of the air, sun of the fire. Similarly, with this, we come to the earth. Then, together, we are coming to this body. Then, when we are in our body, again we go in the other direction to know our self, how we are. Ākāśa, prakāśa, vāyu, water, and earth. This is how they say it: our body, humans, or any creatures. Then after that, what is the difference with different creations? Then it is said, what we call the Annamaya Kośa, Manomaya Kośa, Vijñānamaya Kośa, Ānandamaya Kośa. These all five Kośas are going. Back, Annamaya Kośa, Manomaya Kośa, Prāṇamaya. We enjoy through our body, and we come to our body, we live in our body, and we again go out of the body. Neither this body dies, nor the Ātmā dies, and neither do our elements die. Each and everything again merges into that which is our five elements. Earth in the earth, water in the water, air in the air, fire in the fire, and space in the space. How can we say that we died? Who died? Who dies? There is no one who dies, but we are separating, and we are separating from that part. How? For example, you jump into the ocean, or into the water. You are in the water, and you come out. It will be water in the water; you are out. So all the consciousness within this is playing with us and the observer. Who is observing us is the consciousness. That is what yogīs try to come to, to have the non-self. And who is the self? There is no self. As long as I am, who are you? Someone is knocking on your door, and someone comes. "Hello, who are you?" He said, "I am. Oh, my friend, come in." And the other person may be. What he said, "Who are you?" I am is my shoulder. It is your shoulder; you are not that. Aap kā pair hai, pet hai, śīr hai. Whatever you will touch, and you will say, "What is this? Is this my arm? What is that? Is that my head? What is that? My nose?" Then who are you? I am knocking on your door. I want to know, who are you? Then he said, "My voice. Who is speaking?" I am speaking the sound, but it is not you. So, where is there? How to get our self? After all these elements, you are not there. It’s my water, it’s my fire, it’s my air, it’s my space, everything. So, who are you in that? That is the question of a yogī. And they will achieve. They will come to know. Then it is that I am the one. I am the one. And who is one? You and me. It is you and me who also get it very hard. For example, we have an onion, and you say, "What is this onion?" We peel the onion, one layer. What is that? The onion’s layer. Second, the onion’s layers. One after the other, we will say it’s an onion. Finally, there is nothing inside. So where is the onion? And similarly, it is for us. Who are you? It’s just temporary, you are with the five elements, and the science of yoga, the God has given us so many. If you believe in God or you don’t believe in God, but it is you are God, you are God. Which one? That Ātmā within you and within that. The difference between God and us is that we have so many negative thoughts. We have negative kinds of eating, many, many things. We are not completely pure. We said we gave the child very clean, very pure, but day by day, dust comes on it. Therefore, it is said, even animals and other creatures, they are morning and evening, they are singing, they are looking, they are talking, they are awakening. There is a consciousness, but not that much of what we have. So it is said, 8.4 million creatures. From there, all they have one thing. There is no good and no bad. They are just living because they have to go through. But only one, we are human. We have within us the goodness and we have the badness. Humans have this, so, pāpa and puṇya. Pāpa and puṇya are only for humans, not for other beings. And what is puṇya? We don’t know. Sometimes you think you are doing puṇya, but the other side is different. What happens is that one master and disciple. So, disciple, the master is walking on the path in monsoon time. It was green, and it rained a little bit, and it was very nice, and there were many creatures. So the master said to the disciple, "My child, we call you child." We call every child, "He is not your father," but you will say, "Your father said, ’My child.’" Yes, good things. We are making nice. If we say my daughter, my son, my mother, we don’t say my wife. Only one wife are you. But otherwise, all are my brothers, sisters, mothers, etc. This is, it was Indian culture, but now I, sorry, I cannot say 100%. Yes. Now I can say it. So anyhow, Master said, "You should help everyone, anybody, anyone. If they need help, if you can do good, please do, day or night." Well, disciple is listening, "Yes, Gurujī, yes, Gurujī," and Gurujī said, "Help, help everyone," "Yes, Gurujī." And it was a little evening, afternoon, before sunset. The Master is walking about 10 meters, and the disciples see a little snail. Slowly, slowly, it walks on the way. The disciples said, "Guru, he was thinking." Gurudev said, "Help them." And this animal was walking so slowly, slowly. So the disciple took him and put him in the field. And coming out, meanwhile, Gurujī said, "Where are you? What are you doing?" He said, "Nothing, Gurudev, only what you said." What? Gurudev, on the path you have not seen, but I saw a small, tiny, beautiful creature. The snail, and any cycle, any moped, any car, any person can step on it and it will die. So I took him and put him in the grass, far away. And the Master said, "What are you doing? This is a horrible thing." Guruji, you said, "Help everyone," and you said to me? Guruji said, "Yes, it was not good." Why, Guruji? He said, "Do you know this creature? Maybe he was going to the other side; he wanted to go. And you took it and put it back again the wrong day, no? So again, he has to go the double path, and then again go to it." He said, "Yes, Gurujī, that I did not know." And I don’t know which direction he wants to go. So when you don’t know that you are helping someone in which way, better you should remain one side, help mentally, help with the feelings, prayer with that, that will be with the mind power. You have more than the body, and it doesn’t matter the Gurujī was young and the disciple was old. Doesn’t matter if the disciple was young, the master was old, but the master will say, "Do you know when you will go? Gurujī, I don’t want that you will go, but I think I am also young." He said, "No, you don’t know. You don’t know where the end of your life is. That’s it." Therefore, go within thyself and meditate and meditate. Japata pasu, pakṣī, pyāre. To pasu, pakṣī, they also everyday meditating. Can we meditate every day for at least five minutes? At least ten minutes? But you said, "I have no time. I am so busy. I am so busy. I have no time." Master said, "You have enough time, but you don’t want to do it." Yes, but I have no time. I give you time. I give you time. How long do you sleep? Well, I sleep eight hours. Oh, eight hours. Who is a happy person in this world now? Nine or eight hours? Okay, little child will sleep, but we will sleep ten hours. Five hours, two hours, eight hours, but I give you ten hours for sleeping. Sleep. Okay. And now how much? You have 16 hours still. Yes? 14. 14 hours again, still you have. Very good. Now, how long do you work in your office? Yes? 8 hours. Very good. And now, how much remains? 2 and 4? Six hours. Wow. Six hours. Anyhow, go for shopping. Buy something good. Half an hour, one hour, very good. Then what are you doing? How long are you cooking? Yes, nicely. And you eat with the whole family. How long? All in all, then you see your television for half an hour or one hour. Two hours are still left. You are wasting your time, my child. So, in the morning, when you get up, when we open our eyes, first, we say, "I am human." If you say that you are human, then you will do nothing wrong to any creatures or to humans because you are human. Just one thought: I am human. After that, we should say adoration to our mother and father. Don’t worry, even if your mother is not good or your father is not good, but without these two humans, you will not come on the earth. You will not be there. It’s... The nature of our mother and father is not their problems, but for you, it brought you on the earth. Not only God, but how much work is done. Pranam, salutation to your parents, even if they are not here anymore. You have to come to the end of this life, at all. Then after, you will come to your guru, your friends. This is only within one minute. Oh, everything, I don’t give you so long time. Then, we in India, when we step up from the bed to the... First, we said, "Mother Earth, Mother, I step on you. Mother, please forgive me." That is a mother and father. Look, this will make your inner self very strong, very divine. Then you know the elements. You opened your eyes to the light. You opened the breath in again. The air. Now you step on the ground floor, and now we go to the water. Did you ever think, the first time when you went to the bathroom and washed your hands, how did you feel that water? How did you feel that on your, on the face? Or take the sip of the water in the mouth, you can’t imagine. There is nothing much more beautiful and good than this water. Similarly, yoga, out of all this, tries to take this. Otherwise, it is said the body is not... Everything, but everything, is nothing without the body. Let us do our body, and we come to the yogic path. Do not think that I will live a long life or that I will die soon. Why? God has given, and your master is going with you all the time, whether he’s here or not. There’s only one guru. Their guru is not here anymore, but he’s still your guru. Like your real mother, she is not anymore here, but still, for you, the mother is within you. Is your mother or your father? Don’t say that my mother has died and I have no mother, no, no... You can adore everyone as like a mother, but still, your mother is living in each and every atom of your cell, and your father. That is a yogic research within ourselves. So, my dear, in the morning when you get up, do these few words and say some mantras. Then look to the picture of your parents, or your guru, or your friend, your wife, your husband, or good friends, everything. Then, after you look to the animals, many people are sleeping with animals. Yes. Sleeping on the chest, the car, animal. And her husband is going to the other room. Oh, my God. Yes. The dog is eating there. Yes. Okay, they are good. They are also creatures. There is nothing wrong. But still, the human understands the human to know. So after this, I will speak next time. Wish you all the best. And tomorrow is the National Day of India. So tomorrow morning, about 8 o’clock, we will come to our college and our school podium. There will be a beautiful function tomorrow. Then after, we will have some prasāda. Then we will go to the khaṭ, etc. Wish you all the best. And so, in the evening also, before sleeping, do something. You know, the Christians are also, when they get up, when eating, and when sleeping. Muslims are also doing, Jews are also doing. But Hindus don’t do that. That’s why they are lost in Hinduism. Yes, they are sleeping with a bottle of alcohol now. Yes or no? That’s why, so that’s why all the Hindus are lusting. Otherwise, they will drink milk, you know. In India, people go, but they drink evening milk with sugar. So, in Vienna, Austria, there was a hotel. And there were coming tourist Indians, and they were about forty people, and when they came back from some evening walking, and this also at the dinner, then everyone went to their room to sleep. So they get an alarm or reception said, "Please, one glass hot water." Second, after next come, "Tea, please, one glass hot milk." Other room, "Tea, please, hot and some in." They ask also, "What do you want?" So they said, "Milk." So the fifth one, when he was ringing, he said, "Hello." He said, "Yes, hot milk coming." All Indians were drinking that. Yes, because it’s very nice. The milk will give you a very nice, relaxed, and sleeping feeling. But they forgot the milk and they brought in some yellow water, and that yellow water gave the consciousness, it’s going to some other lokas. Anyhow, I hope that, but it is not so much. The Indians are left who don’t drink. Yes, it is very, very. But I would say that about 56 percent, they don’t drink. My workers here, 300 workers work here, and I thought, and I stopped everything. I checked everything. I don’t know from... Where the alcohol comes in their little cabin, about 200 bottles drank from, how it is coming I don’t know, who’s bringing it, and so they said, "My workers cannot do work without alcohol." Everything. You see, my dear, I was born in India, and I am in India. And you know, India is great, still great. India is the earth, not the humans. Go, I will sit and talk to you. He is coming, I am talking to you. The flower is going to come, isn’t it? Otherwise, I would have gone and eaten my own bread. I would have gone and eaten my own bread. So, you don’t know something. Indians know it very well, but many Indians also don’t know. When I was little, about the age of eight years, ten years, twelve years, I was with the Gurujī, and sometimes in the little villages there was written, "Now we have what we call this, we have this, your..." Somebody is giving you the telephone, then it’s a WW. What is that? Web page, web page, WWW. And in India, long ago, you have made now WW, but India, no, before, when the British came, what was that? All Indians, Hindus, they wrote sometime on the wall for good things for the Hindus. And there they wrote three things: W, W, W. Careful. Careful. Dīvār pe likhte the. W, W, W. Sāvdhān. Do you know what is a W, W now? And what was that W, W? They said, "Sāvdhān." Alert. W, W, W. Okay. Wine, woman, and wealth—alcohol, wine, woman, and wealth, money. Be careful with this thing, then your home will be very happy and very good. And now, even they don’t know. They don’t need to write this thing now. Everything is in a bottle on the... Anyway, and this is everything. No, he lost anyhow, my dear. But there are many, many millions, millions and millions of Indians who don’t drink alcohol, who don’t eat meat. Certain people, either they are too much studied, educated, highly educated, or lower class, they are with alcohol and meat. Or the other one, middle people, they are very happy and very good. So be middle, okay? We should be middle. This side and this side, so that’s it. Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya.
