The Navratri festival

A satsang for the first day of Navarātra, covering scripture, stories, and a call for service.

"In these nine days, all who are masculine and feminine—all these feminine beings—we shall worship them, respect them in many ways."

"They can put it on Swamiji TV... you can donate using this website... It will go from the European account of Swamiji TV, it will come to Śrī Viśvadīp Gurukul."

Swami Maheśvarānanda (Viśvagurujī) and Swami Avatārapurī lead the discourse, beginning with invocations and an introduction to the Durgā Saptaśatī text. They discuss the significance of the nine goddesses, the power of Śakti, and share stories including that of Śiva, Satī, and the origin of the goddess Śailaputrī. The talk concludes with an announcement about India's COVID-19 lockdown and an appeal for donations to support those in need, facilitated through the Swamiji TV website.

Om Namah Śrī Prabhu Dīpa Nārāyaṇam. Om Namah Śrī Prabhu Dīpa Nārāyaṇam. Amma saba dāsa prabhu śaraṇa pārāyaṇaṁ. Om namo śiri prabhu dīpa nārāyaṇaṁ. Śrī Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī, Devādhi Deva, Deveśa, Paramahaṁdeva kī, Ārādhya Bhagavān Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī kī, Satya Sanātana Dharma kī, Satguru Svāmī Madhvañjī Bhagavān kī, Mātṛ Devī Bhagavān kī, Jaya Om. First, I bow before the lotus feet of my beloved Gurudev, His Holiness Viśvaguru Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Paramahaṁsavāmī Maheśvarānanda Purījī, our entire Guru Paramparā, Holy Gurujī, Mahāprabhujī, Devapurījī, Allāhpurījī. As you all know, today is the first day of Navarātra. Navarātra are the holy nine days of Mādurga and her nine different forms. Today is also the first day in our Hindu calendar. In the Western calendar, the new year is on the first of January, but here it starts with Navarātrī. So today is the first day of the year 2077. On this first day, we usually have Kalaśa Sthāpanā. Kalaśa means a pot of copper or any metal; you put a coconut on top and perform its pūjā. Then we do the sthāpanā of the Devī on the first day. Sthāpanā means you invite her to your home. You call the Devī, Durgā, to your home to reside there for nine days so you may worship her. Each day is dedicated to a different Devī. This is a book, a small book. It is very light—only five kilos. Today is the first day of the Durgā Saptaśatī, so the first Devī for today is Cāmuṇḍā Devī. Her mantra is: "Yasya prabhāvaṁ mūlatāṁ bhagavanto nata brahma haraśca nahi vantu mālaṁ ca sa caṇḍikā sa caṇḍikā khali jagat pari pālanāya nāśāya cāṣur śubhānāṁ mati karotuṁ." And the bīja mantra would be: "Oṁ eṁ hrīṁ klīṁ caṇḍāyai vicahe." For each of the nine days, there are different Devīs, and every Devī has a different bīja mantra, a different mantra. In total, if you recite just the ślokas for the whole book, it takes approximately two and a half hours. Each chapter with translation takes a bit longer. That is a brief introduction; Swāmījī will continue. Thank you very much. I didn’t show the pages, so I will put the whole book on the book. Yes, that’s it. This is the Durgā Saptaśatī book with pictures and English, Sanskrit, and Hindi translations. How heavy is this book? The book is approximately 5 kilos or more. It has a beautiful silver box to carry it. One of Swamiji’s great disciples, Dr. Sandeep Joshi from Jaipur, did the English translation and the pictures for the book, and he presented it to Swamiji last year in Jaipur. This is the first Devī, Cāmuṇḍī Devī. That is Lord Śiva, Mādurga. This is Cāmuṇḍā Devī, the Devī for the first day, for today. This is just so you may have darśan. You have the darśan of the divine mothers. These divine mothers have nine-day ceremonies. During these nine days, we should worship the mothers. It does not matter if it is your mother, your daughter, your husband’s daughters, or anyone. In these nine days, all who are masculine and feminine—all these feminine beings—we shall worship them, respect them in many ways. She is the Greatest one. There is a lot of knowledge inside, and protection for us physically, mentally, spiritually, and also for our development, our body, our health, our organs, and many things. But in these nine days, it does not matter who it is—an old woman or a little girl—we have to worship them and treat them respectfully. That is Indian science, Indian knowledge. This book, more than five or six kilos, is very... There is only a glimpse inside, only the pictures, but only a glimpse inside, only mantra. It is to give to all of us how to accept, and how to tell them what this is, how it is doing, what it is affecting on us, our family, our neighbors, our countries, and all humans. What it is mostly about is that all the time, everywhere, there have been what we call devas and rākṣasas. Devas and rākṣasas represent both sides. There are devas as well as devīs. Sometimes, when the devas cannot [succeed], then the śakti has to come. Śakti is one of the great powers. Śakti means strength. You have the śakti; it means you have that power in you. If you have it, you will say this, then it means you will be successful. This is your śakti. Everything will be successful for our spirituality, as well as [against] negatives, rākṣasas, etc. But of course, it’s not only that. Someone will say now, "I don’t like that person or that lady," and I will say, "Śakti, please, they are not." It is not easy. Devī knows. Devī knows who is who. That is it. And Śiva said... What is Śiva? We will say, what is Śiva? Śiva is there, and there is also Brahmā, there is also Viṣṇu. In this book, there are so many great things. Today is called Navarātrī. Navarātrī means nine nights. Each day, one Śakti is acting. Similarly, next, like this, there are the nine days, and then she is worshipped. She is giving all peace and harmony to everyone, and she destroys, kills, or purifies—whatever we can say—she will destroy all negative things. In that, we, of course, have gods: Śiva, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, gurus, etc. We are worshipping them also, and they are also giving to us. This is, if you understand about this, then it’s okay. If you don’t understand, then... We will know still that our devīs, our śaktis, and our guru kṛpā—all it means all bhaktas and śaktis, śaktis and bhakti, bhaktas they have within them. But we should know that we are human, and you know we have a human body. But who knows what is inside? Sometimes they come, they appear so. Avatārapurījī, you can sit down. Therefore, that Avatārapurījī will tell this. So it is that we don’t know. We are coming like a human body, but inside is a rākṣasa. You will see that one rākṣasa comes like a bull. And then she said, "Śakti, she’s taking," chipped off the head of this. So there are many, many things. Many people, they can’t, they can’t try to come. They are afraid because Śakti is very strong. We can fight with men, man to man or woman to man. But only Śakti to Śakti, that is completely other. And Śakti means not only women, okay? Hey ladies, don’t say now we are high, oh we are like this. It’s not that. Even in the men is the Śakti. That’s it. So men, and men can wear accessories? That’s it. So we have to study this. And study not only scriptures, learning, and this, but then where are the purities? When the purity is not there, on certain days this and that, then you are lost. Today is the new year in India according to the Sanātana Dharma. It is long, long ago. And now again, it was, we call... Now we have 2077 years we are worshipping this day. That was the time of which king? Vikramāditya. Vikramāditya. Vikramāditya was there, where we went to Kumbh Melā. Where? Where there is also what you call... We that Mahā Śiva, Mahā Kāla Śiva, Mahā Śiva Kāla Ujjain, Mahā Kāla Ujjain, Mahā Kāla. And there was that. It is said by a scientist and everything, the middle part of the universe or this earth, from the above to the Sūrya, exactly there, where we have our Śiva, we have our event, and we made us. And if not, we will go one day. We go alone. Kumbh Melā has too many people. We go one day. I will bring you there, and we will sit there, and there are so many. Even Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa’s school is there; he was studying there. Yes, who? Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa, and that Kṛṣṇa’s school is still there. Just now, a few months ago, I was there again for Mahākāla Śiva Darśan, and then I went to Mahākāla, Mahākāla Kālabhairava. And you know Kālabhairava? Kālabhairava is here in this book. And Kāla Bhairava is there, and he is Bhairava. Kāla Bhairava is a god; he is a god of the gods, god of the Śakti, god of the Śiva. But that other one is what we call the God, and that God is what we call, in my God’s policeman, my here or there. So they were two, two gods. One was black, meaning the body was a little more black, and the other was a little white. So this is the black Kāla Bhairava and white Bhairava. They are both, so always they are guarding all the temples, everything, the area. And people are very afraid. I wanted to put a Kālabhairava in front of the Jaipur ashram, and all the neighbors were saying, "Please, Swamiji, don’t put it here." Yes. There is a power. So Kālabhairava is acknowledged as a king. He is the king. Once a year, they bring a very beautiful festival, and they called Bhairava, they are going. Even the Indian government and about a hundred guards are going without shoes and many beautiful things. This is all, all jewelry of the king. The stories vary because the king was getting lost. So Vyāsa said, "Don’t worry." And so he became the winner, that king, so he gave all his jewelry to him. Still, his jewelry is there. No one can come there. One day they are giving a full festival. It’s a beautiful festival. I was there three times, I think, or four times. They are very... The Paṇḍit Brahmins, they are very good and they were very nice to me. Always, they bring me completely direct to the temple, and some of them were with me permanently. You were with me, yes. And so, Kāla, very statue, and mouth is open. Little, yeah, our lips, like you can see your, like, teeth like this open, so... And if you go there, you should worship him with alcohol, that’s all—no flowers, nothing, no sweet, alcohol. There is a line of people, long, long lines. A Paṇḍit is sitting there, and they bring one bottle, a special bottle, a special best quality, not like something with half petrol inside, yes. That bottle is about one quarter. They give this to the paṇḍit. He takes his bottle off, and there is one plate. There is a plate like this, not like that. And this is still too high, a very flat plate. They put that alcohol inside. They are all looking, and the Paṇḍit is sitting there, and he will give it. He will give one mantra and say, "God," and he brings only his lips here, and within two seconds, maybe one second, it’s gone. A quarter of that, they give it to the devotees who come. Now they said, and I said. I had said, but where is this going? It is a stone, a little stone like this. But the whole day, we don’t know how many tons of alcohol are going. The British were digging down in some way. There was no weight to anything. No smell of this. There was no pipe anywhere. They cut everything and see, and this, where it is gone, nobody knows till today. And that one is still, he is getting this. That is life. Stones like that. So that is a Kālabhairava and Whitebhairava. They are the guards of the Gurudev, not a god—Gurudevs. Gurudev’s guards are there, guards, and they are all the time. So this is a... we should go then. Instead, there are four or five days, there are so many miracles in this city, and they are all our bhaktas. Don’t worry, oh, we will get nice, good chapatis and everything every day. We say, "Today at my house," and there is that. Many times when you dig, the Śiva comes out, Śiva. Because Śiva, only one day, only one day, Śiva, who has the third eye—we all call Śiva’s third eye—it is not open here, it is only completely like this. But on that day, there was a long story. So then Śiva came, and there were rākṣasas, or we call them, what do you call them? Asuras. Not Asuras. Any motorbike. Aghorī. No, no, no. Motorbike. Yama. Yama, yes. So, that Yama, he came to... Because there is a story of one bhakta, and that bhakta is very much in Bhaktivedanta. You know the big story, if I said Avatāra Purī Bhīṣma Svāmījī, don’t let me speak. So one ṛṣi, and the ṛṣi had no children for many years and years. Then Śiva and Pārvatī came. One day the Ṛṣi said, "I don’t need anything, I need a child." So Śiva said, "No, this not." Pārvatī said, "Yes, give him." And Śiva said, "It’s not like that." She said, "Doesn’t matter, I want to have you now." And so Pārvatī... So that ṛṣi... So Śiva said, and in the hand of Pārvatī came the child. The ṛṣi was so happy, so happy, and they gave the name Nandeśvara. Yes, that was his Nandeśvara. My Nandeśvara, my Nandeśvara. The ṛṣi was very old, but so, my Nandeśvara, namadam, nandī merā. Like after Nārada said, after seven years he came, said after seven years or some, child is very good, but—said what means but—he will die. He was so sad, more than sad. And now, what to do? Nārada said, "Only say Namaḥ Śivāya, Namaḥ Śivāya, and do everyone praṇām, praṇām, praṇām." So in India, when we call "Praṇām Gurudev" or "Namaste," then what we call is "Cirañjīvī." Cirañjīvī means "live long." He comes to make praṇām, then they said, "Live long, bless you," and so many. And he said that blessing will keep him, but still it is said that he will be killed. But I tell you, on that day, this day, tell your child, "Nandī, go and hold the Śiva Liṅga, and only there, Namaḥ Śivāya, Namaḥ Śivāya." Now, the young Yama doesn’t come; many, many people he sends, many rākṣasas, but no one came to the Śiva Liṅga. Nobody can come near, and if he will attack there, they are lost. So then finally the Yama Rāja, there is a, there is a, Dharma Rāja, and so Dharma Rāja said, "Please protect him." And Yama Rāja said, "No, it’s my work, my job. Who can, who can do my duty? I have killed them. Life, even not killing, but they have to go. Life, not any long." But he said, "My child will be Amar and endless." So he was coming. In this book, you will see that coming like a bull. So, not a bull, but what do we call the buffalo? And on the buffalo came Yama. He is born to kill that. And then Śiva came, and there was a little bit of fighting. Śiva said, "This child cannot be killed. I give him immortality." And he said, "No, it is my time." He said, "My chance." Then Śivajī, on that day only once, he opened his third eye from his, and that eye was so strong, fire. So, Yama was finished, his chariot was finished, everything, fire, everything burnt. But he left, and the Śivaliṅga was there, and Śivajī gone. So, still you can sometimes, when they are digging, fielding, building the buildings, then sometimes you find that that time is there, that’s it. And that’s why, if you go there, you should bring the bhasma, we call from the Śivas, that Kālabhairava and Kālaśiva. There we always give, so South Indians and everybody, here and here and here... They are all giving the pūjā, pūjārīs. And that’s why it is also said in Australia, the Australian Aborigines, they have the same accent, same, and that’s why even the scientists said that in this Australian, they have their genes equal to the Indians. So, there are many things people don’t know; they think it is only a joke. Now, when they are saying "joke," now they will know what this is: now, the cholera virus. That has come for those who think and kill those animals, and that is coming back, you don’t know. It is in the air, it is in the air. We don’t, we cannot see. We can touch, but it is there. So we said, "Namo Śivāya." Namo Śivāya, Om Namaḥ Śivāya. Om Namaḥ Śivāya, Om Namaḥ Śivāya. Om Namaḥ Śivāya, Om Namaḥ Śivāya. Om Namaḥ Śivāya, Om Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ hara hara bole, namaḥ śivāya. Oṁ hara hara bole, namaḥ śivāya. Oṁ namaḥ śivāya, Oṁ namaḥ śivāya. Oṁ namaḥ śivāya, Oṁ namaḥ śivāya. Oṁ hara hara bole, namaḥ śivāya. So Śiva and Śakti, they have to become one. We have the more feeling in the man is a woman, and many women, their feelings of the male, and that are to end together. But still, sometimes the female, she tried to try to take off the Śiva, but Śiva only for a few times, minutes, then Śiva looks only with one eye. The Śakti becomes cool like Gaṅgā Jal. Namo Śiva Om, Nama Śiva, Hara Hara Gaṅgā, Nama Śiva Om, Hara Hara Gaṅgā, Nama Śiva. These are the ages and ages, these are going. But Sanātana Dharma, the Indians, the Ṛṣis, is a living life. Others have many gods and finished. That God is one, and there will be no other God. But Sanātana, we have still. Every guru, maybe one guru and only one or two disciples, it doesn’t matter. But that is there. And so, now, for nine days, purify every day. You should wash yourself, maybe morning, lunchtime, evening. You also, and women also, keep themselves very pure with the dress and their talking and everything. For nine days, give the flowers. But now it’s... Snow, so here we have this now, the flowers in India. But there is in Europe, and there is no flowers. Who said no flowers? When there are no flowers and Śakti said, "I need the flowers," then Śiva gets up and he makes like dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dum, snow falling, snow falling, snow. All snow falling from where? From the hair of Śiva. Dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dum, but there is a joy that’s very serious and that can be very, very strict. So we humans, it doesn’t matter from where it began, the Śiva and Śakti, that time they are still here. They are still here, so give the good words, good look, and everything to both sides, because with both hands we make like this, and with one hand, that’s it. So we don’t want this, but we do "Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Har Har Bholē, Namaḥ Śivāya, Dev Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī." So, Avatārapurījī, please. So, as you know, I was saying before that there are nine devīs. So, the first devī’s kathā is Śailā Putrī, which is the name of the devī. The kathā means a story about her. It’s a short story which I’ll narrate. Most probably you have already heard the story by Swamijī, or you have watched it in the Śiva Purāṇa or the serial or something. The story goes like this: Once upon a time, Dakṣa, there was a very big king many years back. Dakṣa had organized a very big yajña where he invited all the lords and goddesses, but he didn’t invite Lord Śiva. But as Satī, who is the daughter of Dakṣa, was Śivajī’s wife, she asked Śivajī if they would go there to the ceremony, to the yajña of King Dakṣa. But Śiva said, "Look, for some reasons it’s not good for me to go there, because Dakṣa did not invite him." He only invited all the other gods and goddesses, but he didn’t invite Śiva. So Śiva said, "Look, I won’t go. But if you want to go, you’re most welcome to go." Then Satī was saying, "No, I won’t go without you." And she, you know, ladies sometimes force men. So she managed to force Śivajī to come with her to the ceremony. So Śivajī and Satī, both of them went to the yajña of Dakṣa, where Lord Viṣṇu, Lord Brahmā, all the gods and goddesses were there. When Śivajī entered there, Satī was very happy that Śivajī came. She took him to her father Dakṣa and said, "Look, Śivajī is here with me," and this and that. But Dakṣa was not so happy. He was abusing him, and he said, "Why did you come? I didn’t invite you," and there was something going on between Śivajī and Dakṣa. So Dakṣa didn’t invite him. Dakṣa was a little bit mad, "Why did you come? I didn’t invite you. You came without invitation," and this and that. So Satī then got a little bit upset and a little bit sad that, "I should have listened to my husband, Lord Śiva, before when he said, 'I won’t go because of these reasons.' I should have listened. I shouldn’t have forced him to come with me." But then she was a little bit upset, so she got angry at her father, and she jumped into the Havankuṇḍ. Havankuṇḍ means the yajña place where you perform the yajña. So she went into that yajña place, and she left her body. That story, the continuation of that story, Viśvagurujī yesterday in the webcast was telling you. So then, after she left her body, in her next life she took birth in a king’s kingdom. The name of the king was Rājaśaila or something. So she took birth in his house, and she was named Śailaputrī. So Śailaputrī is our Devī for our first day. This was the story about her. As Viśvagurujī was just now mentioning before about the bhasma... Bhasma is usually applied on twelve different parts of your body in the morning, after the bath, after the shower, before the pūjā. You usually apply bhasma on your body: one on your forehead, then on your upper arm, on your elbow, on your lower arm, same on this side—so you have already three, three, six, seven—then you have one on the right hand, right left chest, right chest, stomach, lower stomach, and your throat. So these are the twelve places where you apply the ashes or the vibhūti, bhasma. That havan place where Satī left her body is in Haridwar, near Dakṣmaṅdir, where I was a few years back. I used to live in Haridwar, so it was just like a two-minute walking distance from my place. I visited, I had darśan every day of that place. It’s a holy place. That’s the story for the first story. Thank you. Hari Om. Om Śailaputrī Mahādeva Kī Jai. Devādideva Deveśvara Mahādeva Kī Jai. And where is Śakti? Śakti was born as Śailā Putrī. Yeah, but Śakti died, you know. Śakti died, and then her next birth was born at King Śaila’s house. So she was named Śailā Putrī. Good. Devādideva Deveśvara Mahādeva. Thank you. Tomorrow we will again, Avatārapurījī will give the second, yes, nine subjects. You have to speak, and he will also give early morning in our loudspeakers for everybody to listen, not Europeans, but here. And if you want to, we can put it also in the morning for the world. This will be us. Otherwise, next is good. Thank you. All the best, and have a good night. And those who are listeners, I wish you all the best, many blessings. And be strong. We have to be very strong because our government is very strict, and they all are for 21 days in the house only, don’t go out at all. And now there is something, who is going to tell something about they ask our people there somehow, so Agnī Devī will give the message. And it can go through the Swamiji’s film, "Hari Om." As you all know, because of this coronavirus outbreak, all countries of the world, all governments of the world are trying to protect their citizens and trying to stop the spreading of this disease by taking different measures. Also India has been, since yesterday or actually since midnight, in complete lockdown for 21 days. It means nobody is allowed to go out of the house. All private vehicles are banned from traveling. There is no movement. All citizens are invited to stay in their houses. Of course, this creates a blockage in the economy. People cannot work. And especially the labor class, which is working on daily wages, is endangered. They don’t have work, they don’t have payment. How will they buy the food? So the government is very much trying to also give some support in this way for all the people who are the endangered part of the society. They will provide the flour, they will provide dal, they will provide different ingredients to make food for the people in the area, especially in these rural areas which are affected. Today they also approached Viśva Gurujī for help in this way, that we as an ashram also donate something that will be distributed here in the area to the people who are most in need. So we would like to take this opportunity to invite all of you from all over the world to try to support. We can provide you our account number, and you can transfer a donation. We will, on behalf of Śrī Viśvadīp Gurukul Svāmī Maheśvarānanda Āśram Jāḍaṇ, give this donation to the local authorities, and they will use it to provide food to all the people that are in danger now in this time. So we invite all of you to support this project. Thank you. Carry on. They can put it on Swamiji TV. They should give it to Swamījī TV. Yes. So, Viśva Gurujī had one very good idea to make this donation process easier for everybody who is in different parts of the world, because everything is under lockdown. We have our Swāmījī TV, and we have the donation meter there, and we have the possibility to donate online on our Swamijī TV website. So you can donate using this website. There is a link, and you can donate, I think it’s via PayPal. So send your donations. It will go from the European account of Swamiji TV, it will come to Śrī Viśvadīp Gurukul Māheśvarānand Āśram, and then we will pass it further to the local authorities. Thank you. Thank you. God bless you.
