Interview with Vishwaguruji

A live interview with His Holiness Vishwaguru Mahāmaṇḍaleśwar Paramahaṁsa Maheśvarānand Gurujī, founder of the "Yoga in Daily Life" system.

"It doesn’t matter if one is in a little village or a big city. It depends on the parents. When parents are full of love, harmony, and good education, and are very spiritual, they will always tell you what God is."

"Yoga is not only the physical body; it is more than that... Yoga is within human consciousness, in the human heart, in human humbleness, in a humble way of looking at everything."

The host, a disciple, introduces the guru's lineage before asking about his spiritual journey from childhood. Gurujī describes his upbringing, perpetual childlike purity, and his view of yoga. He discusses the ongoing construction of the O-Māśram monument, his first travels to Europe, and the essential guru-disciple relationship, emphasizing oneness and equal love for all.

I am truly blessed and honored to have this wonderful live discussion with our beloved Gurudev, His Holiness Vishwaguru Mahāmaṇḍaleśwar Paramahaṁsa Maheśvarānand Gurujī Mahārāj. As you may know, Vishwagurujī has been traveling across the world for the past 52 years. He is the founder and author of the system "Yoga in Daily Life." Vishwagurujī has thousands of Yoga centers and millions of disciples worldwide. Our guru-paramparā begins with Śrī Alāpurījī Mahārāj. You may have heard of him. The river Alaknandā, which flows from the Himalayas as part of the Gaṅgā, is named after the Guru Paramparā of Śrī Alāpurījī Mahārāj. He was the greatest yogī and sage of his time. His disciple was Haradya Bhagavān Śrī Devapurījī Mahārāj. Śrī Devpurījī Mahārāj was very well-known during the British era, and his main āśram was in Sīkar, a district in Rajasthan, India. He performed many miracles in his life and revived many people. We are from this great paramparā. After Śrī Devapurījī Mahārāj, his successor was Parādē Bhagavān Śrī Narendra Mahāprabhujī, whose āśram was in Bādīkhāṭū, Nāgos. In our yoga paramparā, we have the Bādīkhāṭū Praṇām, a set of exercises we do regularly in daily life, named after Bhagavān Śrī Nareṅdra Mahāprabhujī's ashram in Bādīkhāṭū. He was a very great yogī, ṛṣi, and guru. He had many disciples, but his successor was my Dada Guruji, Hindu Dharm Samrāṭ Paramahaṁsa Svāmī Madhavānand Sarasvatī, also well-known in Europe as Holy Gurujī. Holy Gurujī's main ashram was in Nadol, Nepal, which is also in the Pali district of Rajasthan. Holy Gurujī's disciple is our beloved Gurudev, His Holiness Vishwaguru Mahāmaṇḍaleśwar Maheśwar Ālam Gurujī, who has graciously given me this chance for a live session today. So today, Vishwagurujī, we will ask you about your journey. You are from a village in Gupavas here in Rajasthan's Pali district. You have experienced so much and received the blessings of another Gurujī. We would like to know a little about your background and your spiritual journey from a normal person to becoming a Viśuddha and such a great yogī worldwide. Well, it doesn’t matter if one is in a little village or a big city. It depends on the parents. When parents are full of love, harmony, and good education, and are very spiritual, they will always tell you what God is, what the Master’s will is, and many things. After that village, I came to my master. I went to my mother’s village, and there my master provided me with schooling and so on, continuously. Likewise, I was always with holy saints from my childhood, and it was great. I didn’t like to make jokes somewhere, or fight, or things like that. I was always on the side of purity. My master gave me immense knowledge—not by sitting and saying, "I want to teach you like this," but generally, how to behave with myself, with my Gurujī. So it continued, and I came to other countries, many countries and places. But always, this was yoga. Yoga is not only the physical body; it is more than that. Yoga cannot be for one person only, nor is it only for the ancients. Yoga is within human consciousness, in the human heart, in human humbleness, in a humble way of looking at everything. That is going to yoga, not only making postures or something. So, my master was teaching. I was moving throughout the world many times, and of course, I come to India from time to time, where there are many ashrams, and I believe the form is awesome. So, thank you. It is very nice to see. Regarding the current youth in the 20th century, what do you think is the difference? Well, I was always very loved by my parents. I went to school, but I did not want to go that much. My feelings were always towards God and towards humbleness, and many times about forests, trees, and animals. So I was always in relation with the whole world. Therefore, from childhood until now, I feel myself like I’m a child. Even at this time, I’m not some old person or this or that. I am very much like a little child because I am always feeling childlike—meaning I am a child of God, I am the child of my master. My parents have passed away now, but still I am the child of my parents. This makes me very humble and pure. Another very important thing for me is that if I make any mistakes, I place it on my parents or I give it to my master. As a master, he says, "Yes, okay, I will talk, but be nice and humble." This is all that we are. Like a child—and childhood means not that you lack knowledge, but that you are very pure and clear. It is God, and always to respect all. That has enabled me to come very far, and though I am far, I am always with them in this life. This is very important. Many friends, many teachers, many professors, many doctors, and many farmers, many things—that made me something like a beautiful tree which has beautiful leaves, blossoms, fruits, purities, etc., or rather, animals and humans. So that is still; I am in the middle of purities, like a child. And that’s very good. I feel my being very, very relaxed and peaceful. I know that they will all take care of me. So it is not that I need to care for others, but I also want God to protect me. And I will protect all my friends, our disciples, my neighbors, etc. So, it’s very... Where is life to see? How do I see life? So it is not a childhood. How was my childhood? And then, how will our youth be? Of course, when I was little, we knew little about many things. That’s it. As we all know, Vishwagurujī has been building the amazing O-Māśram monument, a big project since 1995. Basically, the O-Mashram is a dream project—a monument in the shape of 'Om' where we also have our Dada Gurujī. Well, always my destination I want very... For example, like the horizon, I want to achieve that horizon, and as far as I go, the horizon will be that far. But I want to reach some way, so I thought of something which is still nowhere physically. In my meditation, my holy masters gave me this, and now I’m working very hard with many, many of my disciples. Friends are helping in the beautiful home ashram. It will be that kind of home ashram where there is nowhere else like it in the whole world, but I’m not proud of it. I’m happy with it—that I could give something to the world, and that they will know what it is. The Om Āśram is a very beautiful and very big āśram in Jodhan, India, Rajasthan, Pali district. All who come will achieve something spiritual, to know what I can achieve and what we can do, and we can have more like this. There is another one that will come, and that will be something also very big and different, but that’s good. Home is the best because home is the universe. Home is not a forum; home is nothing like that, but it is that God, our energy, our self, and our consciousness. So it is between that, and so we have to come. We are all self. In the home, and that home is an abhi in the navel, and that navel is that. How it comes from the cosmic self to God and into the earth—all three, akār, ukār, and makār, these are the three words or alphabets, and that is how it is brought into the home forums, and that is something more. So it is a beautiful and long, long, and good work subject. In all this, I see that you are all willing, coming in. You will enjoy, everybody, and when you enjoy, I’m happy. And I also want to make everyone always happy, so that’s great. Just two more questions. We want to know a little about your experience when you first went to Europe. How did it go? Was it a big difference or a significant cultural shock comparing Indian culture to how you went? Well, when you wake up somewhere, you go to some house or a hotel, and you have a room there. But when I wake up, I see differently. My toilet is different. Bathroom, toilet is different. What I have in my house or ashram, my bathrooms and all this, is different. When I go, I would like to cook. I have my kitchen, I can cook, and I’m happy. But when I go to see another’s kitchen, there is something different. So it is like if I go or you go from our village to another village. Similarly, India is such a big country with so many languages and many, many things. I think I will not be able to experience everything from India, all cities and this and that. Similarly, for me, when I went the first time to Mumbai, or to Gujarat or Calcutta, it was similar to when I came to Europe, to England, to London. There were slightly different buildings. But I was searching, not for this. I was searching for what I could realize and what I could give to others. That’s the one thing. So, of course, it was different from the atmosphere in my village in India. The first time I saw snow, and now I know that I have more snow in my country than in Europe. But it was something, so that is okay, very good. Friends were good. People were good. They all have different ways of eating, but here, so that is... Around the whole world, wherever I come, there is something different, but there are people everywhere, very good. Could you please tell us about the relationship between a guru and a disciple? What should be there? Guru and master, disciple is like father and mother—that’s it—the brother, the child, and father or mother and child. Like this, the master guru is the one you had first on this earth, your father and mother, and then on this earth, finally, your guru, that we became on it. So you have to take it as a child and not as something, what you call, someone is only helping you and working for you, and this and that. So it depends how it is growing, how it is. There are many things. I have been blessed to be in your presence since my childhood, and I’m very grateful to have such a master who loves you. I would like to thank you for this opportunity that you gave me. Finally, if you want to say your last message to the world... When Dabhata Purī is from his birth time and before that, and similarly where I give him everything, he grows, he studies—and all my disciples, I don’t make a difference. If I make a difference, then it’s duality. And when there is duality, then it’s duality. If you have one child, two children, or three children, parents see them equally. So, the master has all disciples as one, and that is very, very good. Everyone has a different nature; everyone has different feelings, the disciples. But the Master should have all the same feelings, taking in the heart the oneness and peace, and the love and harmony, and giving that kind of knowledge and that kind of education so they will go towards the Supreme, to the highest level. We are not only here for worldly things. Good.
