We should prepare for Gurupurnima

A satsang discourse on purity, the pandemic, and spiritual connection.

"Why does it attack only humans? And why are humans affected so much?"

"Yoga, meditations, concentrations, harmony, peace, love, understanding, etc., are our way of life."

Swami Maheshwarananda (Swamiji) addresses an international gathering at his ashram, reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic after a seven-month absence. He shares observations that practitioners of yoga and pure (sattvic) lifestyles were less affected, framing the virus as a prompt for humanity to respect all life and return to a harmonious existence. He discusses the upcoming Guru Purnima celebration, the importance of a true guru's blessing, and concludes with a practice of drawing prana from trees.

Om Alakpurījī Mahādev Kī Jai, Devādhī Dev Deveśvar Mahādev Kī Jai, Haradī Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī Kī Jai, Hindu Dharm Samrāṭ Satguru Svāmī Madhavānjī Bhagavān Kī, Satya Sanātan Dharma Kī, Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ... Dear sisters and brothers, dear yoga practitioners from all our different countries, I thank all the organizers. We are here in the beautiful place of our Ashram, Mahāprabhudīp Satsaṅg Ashram. What can be more beautiful than this? The sky, the clouds, the big beautiful trees, the peace, the beautiful birds. What can be more than this in heaven? We don't even have such things in the sky. We are brothers and sisters from different parts of different countries, but those countries exist only according to human thoughts. Otherwise, we are all on one whole earth, and we are the children of this earth. I am very happy to see you after seven months. It went very quickly. It was the middle of December, and then I was in India and other countries—New Zealand, Fiji, etc. No one knew then what could happen, what is happening now. This corona appeared, such a disease spreading across the whole world within one week. Wherever humans were, there appeared such a disease. We don't know why it's only the humans. All the animals and the whole forest, nothing is affected. The animals and forests are not attacked by this. Why only humans? We keep thinking about why and how. Over the last three months, much has been investigated. I asked many, many people around the whole world, in many countries—those who were practicing yoga. It doesn't matter which kind of prāṇāyāma or āsanas they are practicing, or if they do yoga in their daily life or in other yoga centers. In the whole world, there are many millions of different kinds of yogīs in yoga centers, and many masters or gurus. That's why it is said that this Sanātana Dharma is that of many, many masters and gurus, and these Gurus are always emerging anew. We know that there are two kinds of God. One is that which comes once but continues to take care of humans. That kind of new, what we call the first Gurus, or God. That's why it is said Sanātana Dharma is a living religion. Therefore, they all were practicing according to their knowledge, and that's why there are many, many paths. There is one sun and so many sun rays around the whole globe, in different places and countrysides. But this ray of the sun comes back to the sun, from the earth back to the sun. So we are the humans in this world, and we should respect everything very much: the humans, the birds, the animals, the forest, the water, the fish, etc. We should greatly appreciate and respect birds, nature, trees, animals, fish. They are all like our children, because we know that every animal or any tree is living, and they feel pain. Not only that, when you kill animals, you think you are killing them and they do not have fear or are not suffering. Animals do things to animals, but we humans should know better. So it is said in this research, over these three months, many, many yogīs, their gurus, their disciples who are practicing different kinds of yogas—not only āsanas, but prāṇāyāmas, meditations, kriyās, and many other things—have been asked. They do not eat any meat, they do not eat eggs, they do not kill any animals. In these three months, two things have been observed. Why does it attack only humans? And why are humans affected so much? And then it is like this: why are those who are 100% vegetarian or like the vegans not affected? Veganism began only a few years ago, but yogīs have been here for many, many years, and therefore they were not affected. If they came together with many people, for a few days they had little problems like coughing, etc., and then it was finished through prāṇāyāma, through Āyurveda, and through our plants. So this is, we can tell, the truth that yoga, meditations, concentrations, harmony, peace, love, understanding, etc., are our way of life, my dear. We should, if we don't know this, but now if we know, we should begin now to get a clear human body. Of course, we will also die one day. Our body is not immortal. Therefore, everyone is mortal. But within our body, what we have, that soul of the humans, was the last border from the 8.4 million different creatures; the last one was the human. And so now it is either we go to what we call heaven or anything higher on this plane, or we will go and fall down again. So it is like a wheel, constantly rolling and rolling. When will we be able to get out of that wheel? That is our challenge, that suddenly that wheel will burst and we are gone out. It's not so easy. So that soul, that prāṇa, what is in a human's body, we shall know. If you understand what God is, and you are praying to that God, and God loves everyone—not only the humans, but the whole creation on this earth—then it was like this. There were other people who were not practicing yoga but were living a sāttvic life. Sattvic means very pure. They did not eat any fish, alcohol, meat, etc. Of course, we also live to eat something, and therefore we have what is called the corn, the wheat, the other different kinds of seeds, and fruits, the ripe fruits, etc. That was enough for humans. But especially after the First World War and Second World War, people turned in a different way. It is said that they saw that some soldiers were eating meat and others not, and so, slowly, someone said "the high society," and they said high society means eat the meat, drink the alcohol, drugs, etc. That is not human nature. A high society is humble, kind, helpful, and good-doing for all. That is the highest one. We respect everyone. We are not telling anyone anything negative. Do what you want, please, but my dear, according to the yogīs who worked very hard to know, and we know what is happening—and therefore we are also human, they are also human; they are good humans, we are also good humans—but what is inside our soul is very important, and that will go to the other side, this side or that side. So on this day, we are very happy to be here. I like you very much, my friends. I was about seven months abroad. You know that I'm 52 years old, and I'm in Europe. I have nearly five generations of my disciples here in Czechoslovakia. When I came to Slovakia, elderly people became my disciples. Their sons or sisters, daughters, they became disciples, and then they had disciples, and then the other disciples—nearly five generations—they learned that kind of yogic science, the yogic knowledge to learn in our body we turn our best path for our future. I have been around the world many times, where I have my friends and my yoga teachers and my disciples around the whole world, in many countries. I came here looking forward to seeing you again very quickly. But in this corona, we don't know what happened. Suddenly, we were all paralyzed. We are paralyzed; we are closed in our house. Wherever we are, we should stay there. In Brazil, I have my disciples there too, and they were also affected very much. The virus is in the air, so they also had it. So in many, many places, the whole world, the humans, the birds, and everything remained there. My dear, my dear, still it is not the end. That's why all our governments and all good people are saying, "Please, please keep your distance." That's only in the distance. This corona, which is coming after one and a half meters, disappears. And if a little closer, it's attacking our body. Within, we don't know how many times it's multiplying. They go with the breath into the lungs, and in the lungs there's a lot of pain, and in the lungs, the whole part, and other organs. If you are very healthy and a yogī, it will go out again. Otherwise, it doesn't matter how strong you are; it will make your body completely break down. So, my dear, we pray, we pray that, please God, whatever we do, indeed, please forgive us. And please clear up this again, so we can live with help, human to human. We feel them, we touch them, we are hand in hand. Body to body sitting, we are sitting nearby the table to eat, we go swimming, everything. We want to again live as a human to human. Maybe this disease has brought us separation. And it is separated. The whole family is separated. The neighbors are separated. So how many things happened, my dear? So here we are in Strilky, here in our yoga center. We have many friends here, many want to come, but we are limited to take the humans here, and after will come others. Now I want to tell you that we are very blessed here on this tree. Our medal, and about morning. Eleven o'clock, our holy master, Bhagavān Madhvanānjī Bhagavān—I was mostly in Guru Pūrṇimā here in Europe, and Gurujī told me to come sometime to Guru Pūrṇimā also in Rajasthan or in India. I said, "Gurujī, you are there, you are taking care of all bhaktas, and I am doing here." But Gurujī, one day, I was looking here—these trees were not here so much, little they were all—and I was looking to my room, I was sitting alone here, people went for lunch, and suddenly appeared Holy Gurujī's vision and said to my name, "Mahesh, this will be the last Guru Pūrṇimā. So I would like that you should come there to this Guru Pūrṇimā." And immediately I said, "Yes." And I went quickly, and, of course, I said, "Gurujī," and everything. And really, after this Guru Purnima there, Guruji had a very nice Guru Purnima, and that next Guru Purnima, Guruji was not there. And so in 2003 Gurujī went to Brahmaloka. Since then, out of respect for our holy Gurujī, I am always there. This year is also the same thing in India. So people would come, but the government doesn't want to let any people come together. And here also, but I said, "This year, then I will be with you." And so I am here. Day after tomorrow is Guru Pūrṇimā. Guru Pūrṇimā means this full moon, and this full moon is known as the day of the Guru. That's why it is called Guru Pūrṇimā. And all the bhaktas around the whole world, from all Gurus, their disciples are worshipping. This is very, very important for our spiritual development. Our technology is very good, and I am talking here and people are listening in Fiji. In China, we also have three centers. Our Matajī, Dayā Māta, is going to China, and she has many, many disciples. Some people practice with Matajī one, two months, and then they go away, and they say, "They said yoga," and their life is my center. China has no what they call copyright. And if somebody has copyright, they said, "End." Nowadays, very few people are respecting copyright. Or you have to give a lot of money, that you can do something that your copyright, you should not do. Or you have to pay a lot of money to protect this copyright. Very rich people, like what they call Coca-Cola. So, Coca-Cola has their copyright, and if someone will do something, of course, then they will take money. And you know, many people, ourselves in Czechoslovakia, in Czech, we are here, and many, they are, how to call, yoga in their life, they took its copyright and do. Why not let them practice? A good thing is a good thing. We should give all people good things. But when the guru kṛpā, then you have to come to the copyright. And what is the copyright, for example? The Czech Republic's postcard. No, not postcard, the... No, no, you have telephoned. How I forget it? My, no, no, my, my, my passport, passport, okay. So still we have, thanks to God, that our passport is good. The, the, here, check passport. Nobody should take this. And if one takes this, it will be, the government will make a problem. So we have our passport, meaning we are the passport of the Czech, or the Slovak, or the Austrian, or this. And so every master has that kind of blessing from a long, long time. So, Alagpurījī, till here, that means that our spiritual passport, that guru should be. Some said, "I am a guru, and I don't want any disciples. I am the guru already." That is not good. That will not come out good. But today, when it is a guru, like, for example, on Christmas, we are worshipping whom? The admiring, the respecting, or from whom? The Jījās. And on that day you say, "No, no, Jījā, now I am the Jījā." It cannot be. Jija is a Jija. Okay, you can be next day, but not now. That is how one should respect everyone, and therefore, Guru Pūrṇimā. Guru, Guru Brahma, Guru Viṣṇu, Guru Devo Maheśvara, Guru Sākṣāt, Parabrahma Tasmai, Śrī Guruve Namaha. In that way, we will worship day after tomorrow, but we are already beginning to worship that, preparing everything. In India it is said that from the Guru Pūrṇimā, for two months, all sannyāsīs, all yogīs should stay in one place. It is as if you have a given belt, and this belt indicates that you are a citizen of a certain republic, and you cannot be a citizen of another republic, only the one to which you have been given a belt. It is also the same on the spiritual path. If you want to get Guru Kṛpā, you need a blessing, which is from a true master. In our case, the blessing comes from Alak Purījī. That is why we should know that in this case it is very important to keep the purity, the copyright. Only then will it work. If they catch you with the wrong belt, you will have big problems. And likewise, if you look for the blessing and the Guru is hiding in the wrong place, it will be the same. That's it. So all are preparing, the whole world, where there are bhaktas who are worshipping their master, and that is very, very important for all, and for us also. We will talk more about how to do, how to worship. The worshipping is very, very important and very nice. Some people have 24 hours of chanting. It is very beautiful chanting, and their master is there. It is very nice, everything. We will also do something good. You are very lucky to be here today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow. We will have Guru Pūrṇimā's worship. It will begin in the morning, and because there are many people, and people come only here and then go away, and like this, so we will have a nice program. I am very, very happy that you all came. I know that some of you had a little difficulty because the road traffic was different. Everyone is trying to take the opportunity. So the road people, the governments, they want to work and repair the road. When there is complete wind, very cold and snow, that will not be easy. So, this was a little difficult to come for some people. I am sorry for you, but you are here. I worship you, our Gurudev, and we will see how it will be very soon, okay? So that's what now you can see, Sūrya Nārāyaṇa. Yes, that is the sun. The sun is also, like we call, a God. Everything, everything is God. For example, water. You said, "Water is life." So, if there is no water, you die. We die. No water for us is a God. It doesn't matter if you say it's a God or not, but without that, we die. There are different kinds of liquids: some juice, some water, some alcohol, and some vodka. So vodka and this can kill us, but juice and water cannot. But a little bit of drinking doesn't matter, but a little is also not good. Because this kind of alcohol is for the lungs, for the liver, and for the brain. And this corona is attacking very quickly such people who are doing this. But of course, it is your decision. If we don't have these trees, where is the oxygen? These trees are so nice, and they are like our father, mother. If we throw a stone at a tree, the tree will not throw the stone back, but it will throw the fruits out. When you wake up and come here, if you have the tree somewhere, just touch it with your hand, gently, and you can go. The whole day, that prāṇa will go through your hands. So look, in this one week you are here, touch every day, morning, evening, whenever you go by this tree, any tree, touch it. Not all the hour, hour just touch it. That's like electricity. When the electricity, we need not to hold very strong, just we will touch us and we are gone. So prāṇa is prāṇa. And in the forest, in the trees, in this vegetation, there is immense and immense prāṇa, energy. We will see more, and all the best.
