Instruction for practicing

Consistent, correct practice according to the master’s instructions is essential in yoga, lest one lose health and spiritual connection.

Every teacher must follow the “Yoga in Daily Life” book precisely; no personal variations should be taught in class. Improper Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna is observed, with practitioners lying down or not following postures. This neglect dissipates spiritual energy and drives students away. Daily, systematic practice transforms life, bringing health and vitality, while lapses lead to visible decline. The body ages regardless of makeup, so one must practice exactly for a longer, healthier life. In class, 15 minutes of practice should be followed by only two minutes relaxation, not long rests. A complete session lasts one and a half hours: exercises, pranayama, and meditation. Attending satsang without daily practice is insufficient; spiritual senses grow dull. The hiatus of isolation brought family harmony and home practice, yet upon reunion, energy was lacking. The Kākabhaṭīśa letter-by-letter teaching reveals deep spiritual guidance. Avoid sin (pāpa) and ignorant jesting (pha), which bring suffering across millions of births. Discard negative deeds (ba) to unlock fortune; perform bhakti (bha) without fear. Remain in the Guru’s service (ma), remember the Divine (ya) for worldly and spiritual wealth. Seek God within (ra), and cultivate concentration (la) instead of wasting time in gossip. Without concentration, nothing is attained; only through focused practice can one meet the Divine. Thus, practice faithfully; what is to be done tomorrow, do today; what is today, do now.

Part 1: The Necessity of Consistent Practice in Yoga So we give adoration to our paramparās. And all other saints, we adore them with this one mantra: Oṁ Namaḥ Śrī Prabhudhipānārāya... Hamsabhadas Prabhuśaraṇa Parāyaṇam. Oṁ Śrī Prabhudīp Nārāyaṇam. Oṁ Namo Śrī Prabhudīp Nārāyaṇam. Hamsabhadas Prabhu Śaraṇaparāya Namaḥ. Hamsabhadas Prabhu Śaraṇaparāya Namaḥ. Oṁ Namo Śrī Prabhudīpanārāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śrī Prabhudīp Nārāyaṇam. Hamsabhādas Prabhusāraṇ Parāyaṇam. Oṁ Namaḥ Śrī Prabhudīp Nārāyaṇam... Haṃsabhādas Prabhusaraṇ Parāyaṇam... Oṁ Namaḥ Śrī Prabhudīpanāra... Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ, Bhagavān, Kī Jai. So, now we are all here together from different groups, and tomorrow is a very good day. You know already, you received the message, and now we should have it for all together. After 10:30 in the morning, we have to bring again those teachings about how to practice our yoga in daily life. And the day before yesterday, I was asking that from the whole world, people should... and I bring them... how they are practicing, and they are practicing themselves with the Barikatu Pranam. And I do hope that people from the office got the message. So, are you sure that you got some people? They sent a message. And if not, then please, from their sides, their schools, how they are practicing Baddhikaṭu Prāṇāyāma. So, is there anybody here who knows the message that you got written from them? A few messages have already come. Ok, so that has to be given this morning, ok? Thank you. And ask them all in this, that please help in making corrections. Also, in the practice of yoga in daily life, many of our people use different kinds of exercises, and these are their own, their own thing that they want to do. Every teacher should have that "Yoga in Daily Life" book in their hands, and they should make corrections according to that. Every teacher should have his or her book of yoga in daily life, and according to it, he or she should train his or her students. If you want to do something different, do it yourself only, but not in the class, and don’t teach them differently. If you want to teach something else, do it by yourself and not in the courses of yoga in your daily life. I see many people there in many countries, and that’s why the people have got lost. So please, also tomorrow, one of the teachers will tell us something, make connections, and which are not connections. Another is that our Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna. And you know how powerful our Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna is. Long ago, I was myself sitting there and giving the instructions. But now, many, many people were, and I had different programs and this. So, we gave one of the Kriyānusthānas to practitioners. I have been told to give instructions, and I thought these people are doing exactly what I was saying. Many people did not practice according to those postures. How were they sitting? Many were lying down in the class. Not in the lesson. Many open the door and windows, then close them again. So, in this class, some people gave the instructions that, "Please, Swāmījī, the programs are not properly done." And many people, they do, in their own instructions to their people and classes, this kind of technique. That is only for yourself, but by many people I see, they’re teaching in their yoga class. And then after some time, the people go away. So that is very wrong. I told many times, but they are not following. So that has to be made. You practice at home. Yourself. That should be. But sometimes people say, "Can I do twice a week, on a day?" I have time, and can I do this? It is not that much. You cannot say that two times the sun should come out. I have time enough. So the sun sets and again goes in the other direction. So the trainings of yoga in daily life, all the techniques, physical, mental, spiritual, etc. And many people do not practice. And then they say, "Well, I did not practice, but can I do the practice here with the group?" And that is not right. They are lost. And we can see very nicely the body of the persons if they practice every day or not. And after one year, after we come to the seminar, you think, "Oh God, I did not practice for 12 months," and 12 months is not a little. So if we practice constantly, systematically, according to the instructions of the Master, and do so the whole year, then your life will be different. And many will be very healthy, very good, and the body will look nice. But many became very neglected. So, I don’t want to ask you to raise your hand if you practice every day of the whole year. And I will say to others who do not practice. So I don’t want to tell you something that will make you unhappy. But everyone sees you. You see yourself. When you go into the bathroom under the water, you say, "Oh, God." And when you go to the mirror, quickly you make some makeup. So, these are the very things I’m not talking about, only here in this seminar in Croatia. Not Croatian, sorry. The Czech Republic in Strilky. So, but I’m asking from this center in Strilky for the whole world, those who are yoga practitioners in their life, they are doing these particular techniques. Yeah. So, I would like very much that you come home like a yogī. But you are not. But you are not. Some, yes. Some, yes. Not more, but some. So, I’m telling you this because you give the time and you come here for everything, and yet, even here, you don’t practice. So, from every country, some yoga teachers should come. And we should tell them, give them instructions physically and mentally. That’s very important. So the Kriyā Śakti program, Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna, it is not simple. So, better you practice the first two years completely, your whole practice of yoga and daily life book, physical exercises, and then you sit down and then you will say, "Yes, I’m doing." So tomorrow I will be sitting there. And those who will move up and down, this is the last class for you in yoga, this Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna. So I will be there tomorrow, OK? Only, I hope I will not sleep because you are making it so silent, and so it has to be practiced. And it is given in writing in the yoga class to the person who is giving the instruction. But they are not giving the instruction accordingly. And so, in every different country, everyone is doing according to what they think to do. So I ask you again, please practice according to the yoga. And I ask you again to practice yoga according to the instructions in your daily life. You see, there are many, many yogas and yoga centers. They are changing; they go to one yoga class, to another class. And, of course, nobody should tell them; they can go anytime. But they don’t know what it means. They are only thinking for my body. I want to make my body beautiful and nice. But this beautiful body, day by day, is not getting good. It’s going down and down, older and older and... older. But this beautiful body does not get better. On the contrary, it gets worse. Older, older... older. It does not matter how much makeup you put on your body, from head to toe. Even if you colored certain parts of your body. But you will not become young again. Forget it. Therefore, practice that exactly. That will be a long life for some years. When you do a lot of bodybuilding, and running, and swimming, it will not be what you want. Therefore, such practice of those yogīs, and many people are there, and they are making competitions. Talking about that, making talking about that, but it will not be. So, please, practice, and not only that, I want to come to Anuṣṭhāna. And we will take next time Anuṣṭhāna one-day training instruction. So one day it will be only whole practice, how you are sitting with this dead. And then the teacher should give that one ticket. One will be there; two, three, four all go out. Then, it will be great, very great. And the rest, others who practice according to yoga and their life, they should practice exactly. So this will be one week or two weeks you are there. So, what is the difference between other schools and yoga, and their life schools? And there, what is the difference in our classes, in our seminar, and what is with others? And so we are, since you came to me, those who are sitting here. You were searching first for your good health and spirituality. So, if you have been practicing yoga and life with us for 20 years, then your body should be really healthy. But why? Many people we are healing, that they are not healthy. Because we did not practice according to the yoga and daily life step by step. Pranayama, exactly how to do it. How many kinds of prāṇāyāms are we doing in this class? What kind of prāṇāyāms are we doing in which class? And one, this, there are three months we have to practice one kind of prānāyāma. And then you can practice two or three exercises, or practice the prānāyāma, different. So, I am always looking to you, and now we have to practice. You will be healthy, you will be happy, and you will be so converted yourself within thyself. You will convert yourself. So this is what is in every yoga class around the world, yoga and life classes. Many teachers I see, I feel, I know, and they are doing long; they put them to relax. I know our, or my, yoga teachers. They are good, but they let people relax during the courses. You practice one exercise, and then you are relaxing for five minutes. Then again, they are doing second programs, one exercise, and Gurujī says, "Swāmījī, relax." This relaxation means that you were sitting, let’s say, standing like this, and then you relax. It means not to lie down and relax again. So, we should have one quarter practice, and then two minutes of relaxation. Two minutes. We should practice for 15 minutes and then rest for 2 minutes. Then, the second part again, practice, and then two minutes of relaxation. And then again, the second part. Continue and rest for two minutes. Then, third, practice prānāyāma. And then, the third time, prānāyāma. And whichever pranayama you are practicing, you should practice it really, really with proper technique and concentration. And not too long, again, relax. And so, after that, the other quarter, and that is a little meditation. This is one and a half hours, where you have very little time in this time. So, minimum, one and a half hours of practice. Many people lost their spirituality. They lost their feelings. They lost their senses. They became exercise lost. They stopped practicing. They only come for satsaṅg. Chodiya iba na satsaṅgī, time to time od chasu, that is not enough. Part 2: The Kākabhaṭīśa: A Letter-by-Letter Spiritual Teaching All my dears, once again I ask all yoga teachers—those of you who have been teaching for so many years—please come forward, and we will share with the people the kind of practices we continue to offer. We have so many yoga teachers, so many yoga schools; I do not even know where some of them are. Yet certain teachers did not receive proper instructions and now act according to their own feelings. They look at a book, but often they do not understand what it means or what to do. So you must practice, and the instructor must know exactly; otherwise, that person should not teach. Sometimes the teacher should stand up and walk silently, not close the eyes and not meditate. The mistake lies with the teacher. Therefore, though only two days remain, you will go on and teach all your students how to teach. Or in your school, tell your masters: we must again practice yoga and life together. There are so many people, thousands upon thousands. I am sure that within a few months, the problems we faced while practicing at home will be resolved. Many yoga practitioners were so sad because they could not come to the ashram and practice. Thanks to God, we now have technology. In all our school āśramas, the teacher taught the people by telephone. And many, many were looking forward so much to coming here—and how happy you are. I have been here nearly seven or eight months. Many of us could not meet our friends, our Yogīs, because we were all relaxed in meditation at home. That was also very good: harmony returned to the family. The first week or two were difficult, but then husband, wife, and children became so relaxed at home. They began to practice their mantras, their exercises, praāṇāyāms, readings. Talking with the children, husband and wife nicely took care of the house and family. So that was something good, yet still we were waiting and longing to be together. Like yesterday, we were singing bhajans. Do you remember? What was Satguru’s bhajan? Somebody who can sing it now, please sing. Last year, when we sang, everyone sang with strength, loudly. And now this year, you are completely adept in it. Yes, you became dull. Do you know what ‘dull’ means? When we sang “Kumbha Melā, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ, Bhagavān, Kī Jaya, Śrī Satguru Devā Kī Jaya,” it was not so full of energy. That is not good. After so long, I have been speaking to you about so many things, and still you did not wake up. So wake up and show me how tired you are. Okay? Now, another bhajan. Which one? A very nice bhajan. There is one bhajan by Śrī Maṅgalālajī. He says, “It doesn’t matter what happened, follow the words of the Gurudev.” And here he gives advice on what to do, how we can carry out the instructions that Guru Dev gives. He describes our body as a field. What must we do to clean this field? We must take out the roots, uproot our anger and greed. They spread everywhere. Siddhip Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān, Kī Jai. You can put it in there. Yes. Śrī Śrī Devī Svarāmā, Devā Kī Jaya, Śrī Satva Guru Devā Kī Jaya, Nīpā. Good. So therefore, you should become—how to say—exploding. And now you are so happy, and you see what Mahāprabhujī has done, Devpurījī… You know how black clouds were coming. Very good, what you are doing. Good. Now, let us continue what we were discussing. Kākabhaṭīśa. No, no, this is—what we have is bad enough. So, Kākabhaṭīśa: each and every letter has its meaning, and anyone can use that one letter as they like. But there is something of great significance in it, and that is why it is called the Satguru Chalīsā. And this is called the Kākabhaṭī Sī. Yesterday we were at the letter pa. “Kī koṭi kamāyī, janam janam tū mahā duk pāyī”—this is pāp, pā; and when you put the two sides together, first pā and pā, it becomes pāpa. Pāp means sin. So do not, please, continue the pāp, the sin. Every day we should do good things; otherwise, sin accumulates more and more. Papa, pāpakī khotī kamāyī. And therefore it is said: what you take from others, that is not yours. And when we take from others, then janam janam—birth after birth—mahā duk pāyī, in every birth you will have great troubles, dukkha. You know what dukkha is? Troubles. So that was up to yesterday. Now the second letter: pa and then pha. These are two: pa, pha. Pha: “Pha phā pholā phire agyānī.” That means one who has no knowledge. Those who do not know what is right are unnecessarily creating differences. (The child is crying, no? And our children? Someone should go.) So, pha phā pholā phire agyānī—that one goes around making jokes, without any knowledge, doing wrong things. That is what is called being in ignorance. And many of us are in ignorance. When in this human life we forget this, then in lakh—lakh means thousands and thousands of lives, in this chaurāsī—do you know what chaurāsī is? Chaurāsī is 8.4 million. And there we will suffer. We will suffer. If we are alive and just run here and there and do nothing, then again we will suffer there. Pha phā pholā phire agyānī, Lakh chaurāsī bhukte khānī. So in this life after life we will be suffering. Then next: Bure means many negative things. So when you are doing these negative things, you should give them up. If you discard all these negative things, then your luck will open. When you get something somewhere, when you find something, that is your luck—good luck, isn’t it? So, how will it come? It is my great luck. We did something good, and that is why we got that luck. Bābā, bure karma ko tyāg, but first, give up negative things. Jin se khule tumhāre bhāg—then due to this your fortune will open, and you will receive everything. Bh: Bhakti karte kabhī mat ḍarnā. And so when you are doing bhakti—right now we are all sitting here, singing holy bhajans, with good friends, good talk, good things—this is what it means to be in bhakti. So do not be afraid when we do things like this. Bābā, bhakti satguru kī karnā, bhakti kartī kabhī mat ḍarnā. When you practice bhakti, never be afraid. You go to prayer, you go to the temple, you go to satsaṅg, you go to cry at the church, you go to the mosque—everywhere. That is a good thing, and you should not be afraid, because we are there. M: Many of you have a name starting with M. Hands up: 1, 2, 3… twenty Ms. Mādhavānand kā kehnā so, Holy Gurujī is also with Mādhavānandjī. M is Maheśvarānanda and M is Mādhavānand. Oh, I think it was—today or some year—that I am with Gurujī. Māmā, Mādhavānanda kā kehnā, Holy Gurujī said, ‘Guru āgyā meṃ nit hi rehnā.’ Always you should be in service of Guru Dev. No problems will come. Mamma Mādhavānand kā kehnā, Guru āgyā meṃ nit hi rehnā—every day be in sevā. So we are all in sevā, aren’t we? I am in the sevā, you are in the sevā, all in Gurujī’s work. Does somebody have a name like “Y”? Oh, my God. One, two, three… eleven. My God, also a very nice name. Y: “Yād karu raghurāī, yād karu raghurāī… yād karu raghurāī guru deva,” then what will happen? Anna dhana lakṣmī. Anna means good food—so we always get our food, we are not hungry. Dhan means property, lakṣmī means prosperity. Dhan lakṣmī mile jag māhī—this you will get in this world. If you remember, “Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata,” always remember God, and you will get everything, all good things. R: Whose name starts with R? One R, two R, three, four, etc. One more. And my yoga name also—can you take it inside? So R, R means R. Rā: “Rām rām apne ghaṭ khojo.” This is said: Do not run anywhere. Search for God within thyself. So, it was: Pha phā pholā phire agyānī, lakh chaurāsī bhukte khānī bābā; Bure karma ko tyāg, jin se khulī tumhārā bhāg bābā; Bhakti satguru kī karnā, bhakti kartī kabhī mat ḍarnā mamma; Mādhavānand kā kehnā, guru āgyā meṃ nit hī rehnā; Yā yā yād karu raghurāī, ann dhan lakṣmī mile jag māhī; Rā rā rām apne ghaṭ khojo, janam maran ko meṭo bojo, Sadgurudeva kī jai. So this is number 30. We will talk about it tomorrow. Is anyone’s name with L? One, two, three… eight. Luck. It means lucky. Yes, one more. You are lucky. L is happiness. L or La, both are for you. Why waste time in words without getting married? Gurujī said, “The L letter said, ‘Lagan, lagan means concentration. … Lagan binā nahī pāvo.’ Without concentration, you will get nothing.” Why are you gossiping? In gossiping, do you get your life? So, what we have to do tomorrow, do it today. And what we have to do today, do it just now. Lā lā lagan binā na pāvo, vātoṃ meṃ kyuṃ samay gamāvo—then you lose your whole life. Therefore, give up all these negative things. Jab ho ve prabhu se bheṭī—then you will meet God. So either you keep busy with other things in life, or you practice meditation; then you will see God. Then next we will say S, Ṣ, Ś, HA—this tomorrow. Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān kī jai.
