Celebrating the Divine Presence: Bhajans, Dance, and the Satguru’s Grace

Celebrating the Divine Presence: Bhajans, Dance, and the Satguru’s Grace.

A bhajan declares every blossom and soul is happy where the Satguru comes. The glory of that Master is beyond description. The Satguru can turn a worm into a bee for those with the prize. Body, mind, and soul are offered to the Guru. The Guru showers nectar of knowledge and wisdom, like heavy clouds that satisfy completely. The Guru is the philosopher’s stone, changing iron to gold with the words So’ham. Through endless lives, suffering is experienced, but the Guru liberates and completes the destiny. The Guru protects from death and saves the soul to infinity. Everything becomes bliss, and there is no return to the circle of birth and death. A dance is performed, worshipping Lord Gaṇeśa, remover of obstacles. The dance worships Lord Śiva in the Liṅgam, the light of millions of suns, liberating from birth and death. The divine Mother, supreme power, is worshipped; her compassion fulfills devotees’ wishes. The dance of Mīrā, who drinks poison with a smile, calls on the mountain-lifting Lord. This spiritual dance is a science, a part of the Vedas, destroying negativity. It is taught to all who feel it in the heart.

“Every bud of my body is filled with happiness.”

“My Guru Dev is that Paras which changes a piece of iron into gold with the words of So’ham.”

She is writing a bhajan about the Gurudev who has come to my house — that every blossom is blossoming, every bud and every soul is happy. And Lālā Nānjī says in this bhajan, “Every bud of my body is filled with happiness.” Blessed is that place where Satguru Dev is coming. What can I tell you? The glory of that Master is beyond description. He can turn a worm into a bee — but only for those who have the prize for it. Lala Nanjī offers everything — body, mind, and soul: dhan, man, and vācan — to his Guru Dev, to Śrī Svāmī Mahāprabhujī. Lala Nanjī offers his body, his mind, his soul to his Guru, Mahāprabhujī. Oṁ Śrī Devīśvara Mahādeva Kī Jai, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī Kī Jai, Śrī Lālanandajī Mahārāja Kī Jai. And now one bhajan from our holy Gurūjī. Yes, one bhajan from holy Gurūjī. In this bhajan he describes how Śrī Mahāprabhujī was showering nectar upon him — the nectar of jñāna, of knowledge, of wisdom. And Holy Gurujī says, “Now I am so happy, because my Guru Dev, these waves have again united with the ocean. My Guru Dev came and brought clouds of wisdom. There was no empty space between; heavy clouds were showering and showering, and I was drinking and drinking until I was completely satisfied and full.” And Holy Gurujī says, “My Guru Dev is that Paras, that Parās which changes a piece of iron into gold with the words of So’ham.” Endless and endless lives I suffered in this world of saṃsāra. Many times I was the victim of the king of the dead, but Guru Deva liberated me and made my lekhā — my destiny — complete. And Holy Gurujī says: if we are devoted to our Gurudev, then He will even protect us from the dead. Endless and endless lives I was suffering, but my Guru Dev liberated me. O merciful beloved Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī, You saved my soul to infinity. And Holy Gurujī says, “Now everything is in ānanda, and I am not coming again into this circle of birth and death.” (Pause) If you have a microphone, someone, please also show the tower — yes, beautiful — and the whole clock, completely. People, you are camera operators; look how beautiful this is. Go back closer, come to that side as well. Praṇām Gurudev. Dear Guru sisters and brothers here and all over the world, today we are celebrating the life and birthday of our beloved Vishwagurujī, and on that occasion we have a very special program today. We will now have Bharata Nāṭyam dance by our dear Bhakti Devī. I think for all of you here she needs no introduction, because you have seen and enjoyed her beautiful dancing many, many times. But for all our friends who are watching through the webcast all over the world, let me say a few words to introduce her. We are sitting here in the yard of this beautiful castle, in our ashram in Strilky, Czech Republic — Mahāprabhudīp Ashram. Yes, truly, our Bhakti Devī has been Vishwagurujī’s disciple for many, many years. She has studied and learned Bharatanāṭyam dance. She has danced all over the world, and now she is dedicated to teaching Bharata Nāṭyam. She founded the Indian Dancing Academy in Vienna, where she is teaching new generations the wisdom and knowledge of Bharatanatyam dance. So we welcome and invite our Bhakti Devī to recite a Sanskrit śloka to worship Lord Gaṇeśa. The highest cosmic intelligence is symbolized by Lord Gaṇeśa. God Gaṇeśa has the head of an elephant. He is the son of Lord Śiva. He removes obstacles, He removes problems, and I bow before Him. After this śloka, we will see the Sanskrit mantra to worship Lord Śiva. Then we will see the Sanskrit prayer to Lord Śiva in the form of Śiva Liṅgam, the universal symbol of creation and the source of everything. The Līṅgāṣṭakam Stotram says: the light of millions of suns shines within the Śiva Liṅgam — the one worshipped by Brahmā, by Viṣṇu, and all Devas, the one that liberates from troubles, from birth and death, the one who destroyed the unjust Yagya, the unjust sacrifice of Prajāpati King Dakṣa. I worship the Śiva Liṅgam, I bow before the Śiva Liṅgam, which is anointed with holy oils, decorated with flower garlands, and with the snake, the cobra, the Ādiśeṣa. All of them are worshipping Him. I bow down before the Śiva Liṅgam, which removes all kinds of troubles, Daridra. I worship Him with flowers from the gardens of the gods. Whoever listens carefully to this mantra will gain purification of heart and endless joy. The lyrics of the following dance were written by Śrī Ādi Śaṅkarācārya. It is from the book Amba Pañcaratnam — the dance of Devī Śloka. Goddess Devī is the supreme power in the universe, symbolized by her mythical vāhana, the carrier, the lion. She is worshipped by Śiva Mahādeva and by his son Kārttikeya. Poets celebrate her endless compassion and mercy. Her portraits adorn the temples; her images protect the temples. Even the demon Hayagriva with the head of a horse is subdued. There are endless ways to gain the divine mercy of the Divine Mother. She fulfills the wishes of her devotees. In her other form, she destroys the demons, and she fills the whole universe with endless happiness. Her cosmic spouse is Lord Śiva Mahādeva, who drank the poison for the welfare of the planet, turning his throat blue. The whole of humankind is her own family; the entire humanity is her own family. I worship, I bow down before the Divine Mother. The following dance is inspired by Mīrā’s bhajan. Mīrā dances with her anklets on. “I am devoted and dedicated to the service of the Almighty. Rāṇā sent the goblet of poison, which Mīrā drank with a smile. People say Mīrā has lost her senses; her in‑laws say she will destroy the family. Mīrā calls on her mountain‑lifting eternal Lord to come to her quickly.” She asks the infinite Lord who raised up the mountain to come to her quickly. Thank you, Bhakti Devījī, for the beautiful dancing. I hope your soul was dancing with her. And together with Bhaktī Devījī, we offer this dance at the feet of our Gurudeva. No, this is for you. Good. Dobram. Paras. Pooch, Paras. Paras. Come, come. Yeah, Pooch. Okay, let’s give it to Bhakti Prasad. Bhakti, come. Give her this. Thank you. Tell her thank you. Thank you. Good. Poonam. Poonam… Prasad. Thank you. Jai Koī Vām. All my dear ones, today was our beautiful day. He was our great Devpurījī Bhagavān, and His glory spreads around the whole world and throughout the universe. We respect Him like Śiva Himself. Also, Alakhpurījī — also as Śiva, Brahmā, and Viṣṇu, Bhagavān, Dīp Nārāyaṇa, Viṣṇu, and Brahmā — is our Holy Gurujī, and all others. And we are all, myself included, in the line of our Gurudeva. So our day was great, and thank you also for giving me my birthday. And now we will have our prayers in daylight. So please, everyone get ready for prayer. Is there anybody among you who wants to learn this dance? It is not a joke. Even those who were forty, fifty, or sixty years old learned dance from our Bhakti Devī. Yes, many ages, but they learned everything very nicely. And so there is the instrument, the rhythms, and that rhythm with the feet, rhythm at the same time with the hands, movements and rhythm in the bodies, and then within that, the knowledge, the words, and there are special instruments. And that was the time when the goddesses were appearing. And it was in the Sanskrit language; it was great. This kind of dance is found only in South India, nowhere else in the world. It is very, very great. It is spirituality. And when it is spiritual, it also works against the devilish ones. It destroys all the devilish things, so it is a science. It is like one part of the Vedas — only one who has the feeling in the heart can learn it. And then it is no joke; it is as if you are, we are, somewhere in another part of the world. And so many — our Bhakti Devī has given many students. They are learning very much, and they are also dancing, so it is great. And we have the opportunity. So if you have five people or ten people in any country, or at a distance of about 100–200 km, I think Bhakti Devī can come for two days, and after two weeks she can come again. It is like we have yoga classes everywhere. In this way we can connect with yoga in daily life. And these dances are divine — for God, Śiva, Brahmā, Gaṇeśjī, Mīrābāī, etc. Sovī, Yek Bohu, Kekaneśovī, Kmihse, and so on. Siddha Pīṭha Paramparā, Siddha Pīṭha Paramparā… Siddha Pīṭha Paramparā.
