Nurturing the Future: From Childlike Devotion to the Guru's Key

A spiritual discourse on nurturing future generations and the guru-disciple relationship, followed by a student's reflection.

"You see how the children’s minds work? They notice everything. And they are our future."

"Nothing is under our control, and we are not able to do anything. But we are able to give some effort and just try to ask for help."

Viśwa Gurujī addresses a seminar, describing the spiritual training of children from a young age through simple gifts and yoga nidrā. He outlines a path from childlike devotion to karma yoga, Sarvahitāsana, and advanced teachings, cautioning that the ultimate "key" to spiritual treasure must be guarded by the guru. He uses anecdotes, including an empty treasure chest and a mother-in-law training a daughter-in-law, to illustrate the careful guru-disciple dynamic. Śrī Mahāmaṇḍaleśwar Swāmī Vivek Purījī then speaks, expressing gratitude for the satsang and describing the seminar as an opportunity to purify the mind and close the distance between the disciple and the guru's transforming grace.

Beyond the technical challenges, there is the heart of our practice. In our anuṣṭhāna seminars—we have four—let me begin from the foundation, with our juniors. They are around twelve months old. They are constantly in a state of sleep, of Yoga Nidrā. And as they emerge from that Yoga Nidrā, they receive prasāda. We have a beautiful, new generation of children. You cannot imagine how sweet and disciplined they are. They have their program; they are all present during my lecture, yet they remain very calm and peaceful. They have beautiful, big trees to play under. Sometimes, they ask for a little something. They say, "Swāmījī, ice cream." You see, yesterday we had our dear Sevapurī and Śāntī. They have the Tilak restaurant, a beautiful place. They are both very humble and kind. Whenever I call, they bring… not alcohol at all… but coffee, ice cream, pizza. All our yoga teachers here love the children very much. Some children ask at home, "When will we come again to satsaṅg? When will Swāmījī come?" But yesterday, one little child, about three or four years old, said, "Why doesn’t Swāmījī give us chocolate?" The mother replied, "But Swāmījī gives one every day." The child said, "But last year, Swāmījī was giving chocolate three times." You see how the children’s minds work? They notice everything. And they are our future. For them, I must provide more of these yogic techniques. That means I must raise them. Always, there is this side chocolate, that side ice cream. They are growing, but not with sugar chocolate. It is something different. This generation will remember this their whole life. When these children grow up, they will have a yoga teacher. Of course, many will study. They will become doctors, or this or that, etc. But they will have their yoga, their yoga school, their daily yoga practice. And they will remember you and me all their lives. You know, children remain very balanced; they know everything from about eight months or even before. The second point is that they absorb more than anything else. That is a powerful thing. They take in more energy, more spirituality, more practice. And that is called Karma Yoga. Karma yoga, sukha-śālam. When we perform karma yoga, that is the highest, the greatest. Seva, selfless service, is one of the best and most tangible forms. It doesn’t matter how highly educated or uneducated one is. Of course, it is like this. Now, on one side, there are the karma yogīs, and on the other, the highly educated. See where they draw their strength all day? From the karma yogīs. Because others go on saying, "I am this, I am that." That is only temporary. Then, it is finished. But the karma yogī, karma yoga kośalam—that yoga is best, and that will endure. God is looking after the children, and then you. After that, they come to… They have already learned yoga. With the chocolate, yes. For how many years? Many are sitting here because of the chocolate, and they are already yoga teachers. So, first, they come to practice yoga in daily life. They are very systematic, and they start from childhood because of their parents, with sisters and brothers helping, and we were doing karma yoga. And now we begin to practice—this is also karma. This is karma yoga: you are learning and practicing yoga. The first is Sarvahitāsana. You know how great Sarvahitāsana is. Now, many people, many schools, have taken our techniques. Very good, why not? But they don’t say "Sarva Yoga." Sarva Hita Āsana. You should write, "I learn, I practice sarva hita āsana." Don’t say anything else. I practice Sarva Hita Āsana. Which technique, which philosophy of yoga? We talk of other yoga, this yoga, that yoga, but it is Sarva Hita Āsana. So, I give you a stamp today, okay? You will have a stamp. I have already given a stamp. Look in your kismat. What is kismat? In Sarvahitāsana, what do you have there? Kismat. Who has the kismat? It is given by the highest one. It doesn’t matter what we are doing—whether we are teachers, doctors, drivers, swimmers, anything. The best of the best that you are doing is still given by the Supreme, by God. We should know that. So, begin to listen and learn. Our Sarvahitāsana begins and continues through our Kṛyā Anuṣṭhāna and Kṛyā Yoga. And within that, what our Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī gives, also from Devpurījī, is that you will learn the real techniques that people are learning now but could not quite grasp exactly: Yoga Nidrā. This was written by Mahāprabhujī at a time when I was not yet born. That book existed, and that holy Gurujī was teaching me. That technique, Yogī Janakī, yoga nidrā—you know this bhajan? I still have not finished it completely because there are two or three words that are a little caught between the teeth. A little something from the grass, and always that golden tongue is there. I have to extract it. Gurujī did not write it like that. When they translate it, it becomes zero. Many of you know much better. "Yogī Janakī, Yoga Nidrā." Yes, so we are learning, and you are all receiving the best of the best knowledge of yoga, the means to your Cosmic Consciousness. And then the next step: what was first? Children, then Karma Yoga, then Sarvahitāsana. After Sarvahitāsana, we come further, and there comes the teaching. In teaching, Gurujī immediately gives this technique: Yoga Nidrā. And then comes practicing. Now, after that… For example, today in this seminar, our sister who is teaching yogīs was practicing. What is her name? Rāmā Devī. Prem Śakti? No, no, she’s still not there. You are Ramana. Yes. We have to concentrate, listen to where I am. And after that, now we are giving instruction on how to teach further. So, you are still learning. You will learn for life. I am learning. I am really learning very much. My Gurujī said to me, "Learning, learning." He said, "Don’t stop." And what is that? There is one bhajan, I think from Sūradāsa or another saint. He compares it to a big, beautiful river flowing. But when the monsoon is gone, the river is dry. There may be other things, but it has no inside. It is not about quantity, but quality. That is what we have from the deep, what we call the well. We dig and dig—100 meters. Some have really 100 or 200 meters, and some drill even deeper, but there is no water. There is oil, but we need water. We drill wells: five meters, ten meters, thirty meters. In Jadan, we have nearly a hundred meters. Inside, you see the water is only about two and a half meters deep. But you can draw that water with a machine. Water comes—very fresh, very clean, very good. Like we have here also. Yesterday, I tried to check and drink it. It’s such good water. But in other countries, they say, "No, we have to count the chemicals inside, and this and that." Because we have made the water impure, full of chemicals. But the point is this: it is like you are constantly receiving your knowledge, all your learning, yoga in daily life. It means you must teach further. If you do not teach, then slowly, slowly your water will dry up. This is the source from which the Guru has taught you, from the deep well of his being, through his kuṇḍalinī or any other techniques, and is giving to you. One engineer may learn everything, but another cannot know how to make vegetables grow. Another learns very well but doesn’t know which spices to add, how to prepare a vegetable, whatever vegetable you like. Then he says, "Don’t worry, let’s go to the hospital or the restaurant, and we will eat." But you have no knowledge. Another will say, "Oh, the honey. How to get the honey?" Don’t go near the honey bee. Otherwise, they will come and say, "Oh, my friend, come on." Another says, "No, I want to ride my horse also." But you were a railway engine driver. You cannot ride a horse. So many in this world, in this era, have lost knowledge. They specialize only on one side. And when one side suffers, you know what happened now? During this corona, everything was blocked. The police, the government said, "Don’t go out of your room. Stay in the room." Now, they don’t know how to cook, so they just put chapati flour in water. There is no fire, so they only drink the water. How many people suffered and became more or less depressed? They know so much knowledge. They studied very much, but it is only dry. Therefore, we have to learn from the roots to the branches. Even in these times, people lost their jobs. They have nothing. They don’t know what to do. But people went into the forest and brought back so many vegetables, so many herbs. Yes, why not? So, learn everything. Anytime you can do anything. Therefore, practice, practice, practice. That will lead you further, and your knowledge will become bigger and bigger. Just as the more water you draw from a well, the more clean and good water will come. If water is poured inside and does not come out, it will stagnate, and animals will fall in, and so on. So, you should teach yoga in daily life to everyone. Teach them. Of course, as you go further, we have our ashram, we have a system, and we have our fellowship where we do everything. In every country, there are one or two who take care, and all yoga teachers are teaching. They should continuously pass it on to others. Let the new generation come up. This is very important. This is how we begin what we call yoga teaching. We are teaching yogīs to make yoga, and you become a yogī. Then, you teach further. And then the final stage is for practices like Kriyānuṣṭhā, Kuṇḍalinī science, Vyāda Kuṇḍalinī. That key has to be opened. I was in America, in a big ashram where about 300 people could attend a lecture. It’s very large. In my mind, it is said the ashram is beautiful and very big. One day, one of our practitioners who takes care of the ashram found something: a locked treasure chest. He telephoned me here: "Swāmījī, big treasure." I said, "Very good, but who knows who will have it?" He said, "No, we don’t have a key, and we can’t break it open." I said, "Okay, go and find someone who can open it." They looked, but there was no person with that key. They said only two or three persons could do it. They called them. They showed what was written on it—it was from the Second World War, with Americans and airplanes; they could fit four airplanes inside. Anyway, it’s very nice. We have a very nice ashram now. One person asked for five thousand dollars. Others asked for eight thousand. I don’t know what the three of them saw. One man came and said, "Yes, I can open it, but I need money for that. Will you give the key back?" He said, "Yes, I will return the key." That person opened it. It was completely empty. There was not even an ant inside. Only one key was inside, with something written on it, a name or letter. I think they put the key back in and left it locked, or I have to ask about that. So, that is the master. Only that grace, which is the master of the master of the master, the Sadguru, is great. That can open our treasure. But do not let your treasure be open all the time. Otherwise, everything becomes empty. So, open it only from time to time. I have not taught you these techniques yet. Even my Mahāmaṇḍaleśvaras are there. Yes, yes, yes. Every Mahāmaṇḍaleśwar, but the keys are with me all the time. You don’t know to whom this key will go. Anyone among you could receive it. But if you take it, then your treasure will be empty. You know why? Because once I know yoga, I know Kriyā, I know sleeping yoga nidrā, I don’t need Swāmījī, I don’t need a guru. I am there. Yes, it’s empty. And now, what is on your empty plate? You were licking it, and then there was nothing there. Empty. There is a poem. I will tell you tomorrow, I think. "Empty in the empty, in the empty, empty. How are you?" It’s a good poem. In that way, you begin to teach. We were teaching our teacher, and our teacher began to teach—that means now he became the teacher. But still, not so far. When you think, "I can teach you this, and I can teach you that…" I have been teaching in Europe for 52 years. I try to teach a lot, and people learn from me and then go away. They lost their knowledge, or someone said, "Okay, Swamiji told me I will teach like this." Swamiji brought a helicopter. Yes, and he told you the helicopter is like this and that. I go to sleep, and you want to lift the helicopter. Don’t try this. You should teach only that far. Don’t go a step beyond. If I give something… there are many sitting here thinking, "Yes, Swamiji said, ‘I will teach.’" No. You can talk about something, but that key is not there, and you are causing harm. It will not work, and it may be that some guru will not give this key. Better that he keeps it away than gives it to that kind of disciple. I will not give the key. Better I will throw it in the ocean. That’s it. So, step by step, don’t become like that. This is the fifth step. Now we have reached a point where you are doing yoga anuṣṭhāna. Sometimes we need the teacher, so I am giving this teacher. Please sit there because he has that knowledge, but I did not give the key. He is with me all the time. There is also… Now, you don’t have that here anymore. But in many other countries, like in India also, when a child is married and his wife comes… but she has one, his grandmother’s wife. And she tells her, "This is my house. Here are the neighbors, here are my families, your families. How do those people behave? And this, your sister of your father’s brother, or husband, what is her behavior? How is your behavior?" Maybe others will tell you something, but you don’t tell any negative things. Even if your brother, or husband, daughter-in-law, your brother… she will tell you, "You are from a poor family, you have nothing, and what are you taking from my house?" Don’t tell this to my dear daughter, because one day she will go away, and then she will also be like that. So, they are teaching the mother-in-law. And then she exhibits great behavior. She has all the keys in her hand. This key is hanging here in her sari. When she walks, so many… and she walks like this. "Yes, I am the boss of the boss in the house. Girls, you don’t know anything. Don’t destroy my house." One day, this wife of my mother-in-law says, "Come here," and she’s twisting, "Sit down, my daughter, my boss. You are now… everything is yours, my dear. Now, this is your house. I trained you very well." And I know that you were so strong and honest, so this is your case. And she said, "No, Mother." He said, "No. Now, what I need, you will do like this." It is a guru who gets such a disciple, and they automatically receive that key, the kind of key that is in their case. So, this is what you all are. You also have a guru. You were a child. You were karma yogīs. You are learning yoga. Every step you take. And now you are in that final stage, and in the final, we have to wait. Yes, the mother-in-law… she said the dress, what you call the ironing, and then she comes near the mother-in-law. And she sees how she is doing her laundry, and she says purposely, "You don’t know. Come, do it like this." But she burns her knee, the finger of her daughter-in-law. Yes. It takes a long time, and she doesn’t go to her home, and her mother and father come. Then this mother-in-law, she is so great, she is great, and they said, "How is my daughter?" She said, "Gold of the gold, oh, my daughter is very good, but my daughter said…" That you burned my nose, yes, that she will remember me her whole life. So, my dear, the relationship between master and disciple is great, but not easy. And you all will become great. You will be great yogīs. You will teach everything. And, of course, I have to give the guru to gurus. Everyone will be, but there is one lineage: Alak Purījī, Deo Purījī, then Mahāprabhujī, Holī Gurujī, and now we don’t know. I don’t know; I am still not there. I am trying. I make mistakes. Holy Gurujī did so many things. So, my dear, you are great now. You are sitting here for me. You are sitting here like golden balls. But be careful that nobody takes our golden ball from your hand. So, let our golden ball roll from generation to generation, and you make more and more disciples. We must now reach our young generation. They need it. And you know, many people in the world have become vegetarian during this corona, yes? They see that humans are really killing animals. They don’t want to slaughter anything. Yes, many, in many countries. So, my dear, it is great. But I don’t want to take away. But it is said that the daughter-in-law, she is doing all the work. Cleaning all the plants first, and then she takes her little food and eats. And then later, they say, "You ate too much." Only this much you will eat, of course. That is why I don’t marry anyone, okay, like girls. Or be nice. So, I have taken all, now a little is left for Vivek Purījī. So now he will talk. Okay, so Śrī Mahāmaṇḍaleśwar Swāmī Vivek Purījī of Croatia. Praṇām Gurudev. Hari Om. Śrī Mahāmaṇḍaleśwar Swāmī Vivek Purījī: Dear brothers and sisters, what is there to say after such a great lecture? Thanks to God that we have the webcast to hear Viśwa Gurujī’s lecture even if we are at home. But listening to the webcast and not being in this energy is missing something. I listened to Swamījī’s lectures over the last few weeks. I received a message that I would lead the Anuṣṭhāna. I must say that at first, I had a not-so-pleasant feeling because I know the condition I am in. After this lockdown, after the earthquake in Zagreb, and all that has happened in Zagreb, I felt a little that I am not in a condition to endure. But just coming here to Strelka, to be in this energy—the energy with Vishwagurujī, the energy of this beautiful ashram, and, of course, the energy of all of you—immediately everything changed. Really, I must say that everyone spoke about Corona, but I also learned a few months ago that every problem in other hands is also an opportunity. What I saw in this anuṣṭhāna, I have never seen people so disciplined and practicing so nicely as this time. Also, for all of you who are not here in Strelka, I must say that this energy here is truly divine energy. It is not only talk; it is really something you can feel. I listened to a few lectures of Viśwa Gurujī from Zagreb. One time, Swamiji spoke about kismat. I must say that at that time, I was not 100% in agreement with what Swamiji said. Because Swamiji said that what is in your kismat will be. Yes, but if you practice yoga, it will also be like this. But really, if you have a guru, if you have a paramparā, in that case it is something completely different. I know that Vishwagurujī will never say about himself something like this, but we know that everything written on our palm, they say, will be. But there is always a "but." If the Guru just a little, with his nail, changes this, our complete life will be changed. But for that, it is also very important to be a disciple. They say that pārasa is the stone which has the quality to change iron into gold. But if the paras is not changing the iron into gold, there are two possibilities: either the paras is not a real paras, or there is distance between the paras and the gold. We know in our case that the paras is a real paras. Only the distance between the iron and the paras may exist. It is some dirt, some mud, or some distance, some fear. A seminar like this, like what we have constantly—24 hours of satsaṅg—that is the great opportunity to clean all this dust and dirt between the iron and the paras, and to remove the fear. Because when you start with spirituality—not religion, spirituality—in spirituality, there is no more fear. From our book Chakra and Kuṇḍalinī, we see that fear is not a human quality. Also, when we read Vishwagurujī’s book Hidden Power in Human, we find something very nice about the Maṇipūra Chakra: that the Manipura Chakra is like we are in heaven. But we also know from another bhajan that a thousand miles above heaven sits Bhagavān Rām. A few days ago, Vishwa Gurujī talked nicely about heaven and hell: that it is here, and it also depends on our feelings and what is in our inner world. Where we will be, in heaven or in hell—we are in the same place, at the same time, mostly in the same situation, but somebody will be in hell and another in heaven. Sometimes it depends on the mind. Here in satsaṅg, we have the opportunity to give everything to our Gurū Dev and try to purify our mind, purify everything—but not with the thought "I am purified," because we know that I can’t do almost anything. When a few days ago Viśwagurujī asked me, "Is everything under control?" Nothing is under control. We think something is under control and that we are doing something. But nothing is under our control, and we are not able to do anything. But we are able to give some effort and just try to ask for help, that in this one, two… however long we will be here, we have the opportunity and blessing that all our dirt be purified, and that the iron comes in touch with the paras. Thank you, Vishwagurujī, especially in this time. But I think this corona is not something special. Throughout history, humankind has always had epidemics. But in the last few centuries, we’ve just forgotten this. There was always the same fear inside, and I think fear is the most dangerous thing. We must be careful, but not in fear. That is the great thing: that we have such seminars. Thank you for that, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān. Viśwa Gurujī: Very good, thank you, Vivek Purījī. Gold and iron. So we have to make the iron into gold. So we have to become gold, okay? Hari Om. Hari Om.
