The Essence of Mantra and Right Living

A spiritual discourse on mantra, daily practice, and ethical living.

"mantra: 'man' is the mind, and 'tra' is fulfilled."

"Only he who knows Kṛṣṇa knows the Bhagavad-gītā... only Mother knows who is the child’s father."

The lecturer delivers a wide-ranging satsang, exploring the meaning of mantra as that which fulfills the mind. He emphasizes reverence for parents and the Earth, advises on simple, mindful living, and cautions against family separation, using teachings from holy books and personal anecdotes. The talk connects morning rituals, right speech, and consumption habits to creating a lasting spiritual impression.

We chant mantras. What do these mantras mean? They are good words—good words for God, for our parents, for our brothers and sisters. We worship various good names for all of nature: the waters, rivers, lakes, and the grass. It is very important to do this. To remember means to respect, or to offer our humility. That is the name of God, and through it, we come to know. For example, there are many holy books. You know there are many holy books. Good. Truth. He says, yes, truth. That is it. That is how it is. So, what I said, what I was talking about, is that in many cultures, in many religions, in many schools of thought, they have written very nice books, scriptures, holy books, and so on. In those books, only good things are always written. We are the ones who read the books. In Christianity, they place books in every hotel drawer. Many also place the Bhagavad Gītā. Some religions in some countries distribute them, some do not. Where there are more followers of Islam, they have their holy book, the Qur’ān, or we have different ones. You know that many of our thousands upon thousands of bhaktas, disciples, and yogīs have their own book with them in their room. Many times, when I am traveling or at my ashram, whoever is there brings Mahāprabhujī’s holy book near my window or my table. In any book we open, on every page, something is written. Perhaps you read that book through completely once and then say, "Finished." Yes, then there are many, many other books. But those books we can read and read; there is no end. When you read one śloka of the Bhagavad Gītā, you can read it every day. Every time you will gain more knowledge, different insights, and so on. And it means good things. Even though there are also hard words—there is also talk about death, killing, etc.—within that, it is what it is. It was like that. And then something is written; that page will tell you what will free you from that. So, every morning when you get up, or anywhere you see them, or when you go to your office—maybe in a hospital—or when you see someone, a friend... Generally, all are our friends. In some countries, and some countries say it differently. So here, "good morning." What do you say in Austrian, Czech? Dobrý den, Dobrý ráno... But far on the other side, what do they say? I went to our ashram in Hamburg and stayed with some of my disciples. She is now old and has died, unfortunately from cancer, I think. I was climbing three floors to stay there, and going down is also three floors. I went down and said, "Good morning." I said, "Good morning," and they said, "Tak." So he said "tak," and I said "tik." Tick-tock, a clock. So he said "tick," and I said "tock." Tick-tock, tick. And if we see in my language, then we say, "How are you?" Everything is good. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. So, how are you? Others say, "OK, I’m tick-tick." And now many are saying something different. About 10, 15, 20, 50 years ago in America, when you go there and when you come here... When a guest, a client, comes to our shop, and this client and guest says, "Good morning." There is also "good morning." Good morning, good morning. And someone said a little differently: "How are you? Very good. Thank you." Please do not emulate what I am telling you. I went to buy something in America, in big shops or small shops, and I said, "Good morning," really. And if we say, "Thank you," after we go, no word, really. Who was in America? Hand up, please. One, and two, and three, and four, and five. So you did not listen to that. Now there are new words to say something. And it is said, if you ask, thank you. So many things have changed in many different countries, and people like this. So we are everywhere, but let’s say that Europe is very humble and very nice. Sometimes we are passing by; otherwise, even when we are walking through the park or you are going to your office, and you don’t know who is who, they will say, "Good morning," everywhere: Hungarian, Czech, Slovak. So still we have our spiritualities in our hands. So sometimes it’s a little country, but it is in our hands. That is very important. So what we say more upon getting up, or we call the mantra... And mantra is there; it is nothing else than what I am telling now. But the word "mantra"—holy Gurujī many times told in his satsaṅg the definition of the word mantra: "man" is the mind, "trā" means happy, fulfilled, like when you eat. Good, then we say, "I am full." Very good. So mantra: my mind is perfect, complete, everything. Mantra and "tra" also means coming thirsty, and when you get water, somebody gives you water to drink, then we say, "I am full, I am trapped, fulfilled." So mantra: "man" is the mind, and "tra" is fulfilled. Then we can say many mantras and this and all, but is that two words? Mantra: thought and sweet. And as Gurujī said, short and sweet, little and completely full. So, in the morning when we get up, whatever you see, feel, or use, bring some happiness, joy, peace, etc. And first, what you should see when we wake up is your face. You see your father or your mother. And your parents and your little child look and see, "My child, how he is." It is beautiful. If you have in your sleeping room, and there is not your father’s or mother’s photo, or toys of your mother or father, but you have animal toys, then you first have the impression of the animal. Very good, no problem. Dobře, bez problémů. No, but you see first the pictures of those animals. And children are happy. But when your children have grown, will they not eat meat? And many things are because many people, children and many people, don’t know who and how they kill the animals, and which you cannot eat like that. They give in such a way that comes from self, then you just cut something and fry, or I don’t know, I never see. In my life, I didn’t see, except once I saw it, but I didn’t see any frying, frying, cutting animals in the kitchen, neither on my table. But that child, looking at the toys they love so much—they have so many toys in your room, in your house, due to love of our children. And why not? We should love our children, but you give them so many toys, and the toys children look at and love very much. But when they grow, how could they not tell, "Why do you give me meat?" So there is not good. So what do we see? But in there, we have to understand and see that I am, I am, I love all animals, every one. And first, God is my mother and my father. And it is said, "Mātṛ Devo Bhava, Mātṛ Devo Bhava." Mother is the God, the first God. But mother has to be the mother. You should... how are you giving, get a flow, fry them, grow them up? How is mother then giving? One side is toy, and the other side is to kill some rabbit. Is not that, and also father, mother is a god. Matka je Bohem. Matka je Bůh. And father, "Mātṛ Devo Bhava, Pitṛ Devo Bhava." Father is Pitṛ. A otec to je Pitra. And he is God, Pitṛ Devo Bhava. And he is also God. He is also God. And so, you know that you are going for the ceremonies that, mostly, they are giving. Worshipping after their death, the father, because he is again that seed. The seed is very important. So Mātṛ Deva, Mātṛ Deva Bhava, Pitṛ Deva Bhava—they are both God for us, and then they look to the earth. Earth means where we sleep, and on the floor, our floor, there also we say, "Mother Earth, may I step on you?" Because I was born on earth, I sleep on the earth, I step on the earth, and again I will go into the earth. So you are mother; our whole globe is our mother and our father. In that way, you should have those feelings. So it doesn’t matter if your husband or your wife begins to make a little bit of drama. But still, sooner or later, this is your heart. We all love these children; we are enough. But the seed and the earth are one. Maybe animals can go separate, but parents, mother, and of course they have to be humble and good. Otherwise, they are crowing, alcohol, drugs, meeting, fitting. That is not a human quality. When they fight, when there is alcohol, some drugs, and so on, these are not human properties. When you separate mother from father, children from parents, it is as if you were tearing children to pieces. Trying to separate, this life may be, you think, good and happy. But, my dear, it is not good. It will be like you put one bird in a cage. Very nice. You give nice seed, you give water, and say, "Hello, pipi, tididi, tididi, tididi." But that bird, God gave the wings and a free, lifelong prison. It will be like a sin, and how big. And similarly, those parents who will separate like this, you will be in one, and you will be like that for how many lives and lives. So this is how I want to tell you how we should think and feel. And it is said we are human. So we should know what it is. Or you are separate. No, you are not done with it. Then the child will also be... you get a child suddenly, why not? The man is happy. No children, hurry up. But the female, she will get a child, maybe. I don’t know how it’s coming. The husband was not there. But the mother has something, so God gave her stomach a beautiful child. But then the father will ask—not father, sorry, the mother—the child will say, "Mother, where is my father? Who is my father?" And she doesn’t know who my mother is. And it is said, only he who knows Kṛṣṇa knows the Bhagavad-gītā. All people can sing and give and talk about Bhagavad-gītā. It’s all written here, Bhagavad-gītā, Bhagavad-gītā. And we are giving many, many stories. But it is it. Only Kṛṣṇa knows that. And this has been written after Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa. It’s not that Kṛṣṇa spoke this. But it is said by Vyāsa, and there is all, of course, as everybody said, after they said, and day after they said, what Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa was telling, talking, lecturing. So, Kṛṣṇa, Janesā, Gītā, who knows Kṛṣṇa? Who is Kṛṣṇa? Then he knows what the Gītā is. Now, what Kṛṣṇa and, no, there was never that time, the Yesodha. Not your yes or no, the Rādhā. Rādhā is not so long. But Krishna is not here, and she is not anybody. So we can do what we want. Otherwise, Kṛṣṇa, you can see, sitting near the cows, are at home and many things, but now we can do anything. You know, when I will die, after I don’t know what you will talk, what will you tell, what will you write, what will you make pictures? I don’t know. So, do you know the Kṛṣṇa? So Krishna said in the Bhagavad Gītā—of course I respect, I adore, and I am sorry if someone thinks that I am not wrong, wrong, and that we are taking it as a holy book. So, but the reality, what is that? So, Holy Gurujī said one day, "Kṛṣṇa jāne so Gītā," but who knows Kṛṣṇa? That is the right of that Gītā. And Mātā jāneśo Pitā, only Mother knows who is the child’s son. Mother. That’s it. So Kṛṣṇa jāneśo Gītā and Mātā jāneśo Pitā. And so, otherwise, this one lifelong, it will come, someone good. And this, but there is your guru, your master, who gives you more than love, your mother and father. Kabīr Dās. We had no, we don’t know where was mother and father. Kabīr Dās, we don’t know who were his parents, who was his father and mother. So there are many who were like that. And many were the same. But what we are talking about, so it is said that in the morning, what you will see, that will come first, the face. So therefore it is said, when you wake up, we open our eyes as God, Mother, Father. And Mother Earth, Water Father, so first we take the water. And we touch water, how nice we clean our mouth, so that water is very great. So in the same way, it doesn’t matter in which religion you are and which book you will read. Read those good books. There are many good, great books. There is also from the Muslims. Different kinds of Muslims, Christians, different Christians, different in that book, yes, why not? The main thing is that we are talking about the spiritual Bhagavān. So, you have got from here, what kind of impression did you have? And what kind of face you will take, and what you will give further to your families or the friends, so this is very important. And that is impression, and that impression remains all the time. In Yugoslavia, there was... They are fighting like a war, and everybody was telling something: Slovenia, Croatia, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovenia, there and there, and everyone. If I’m not wrong, it was divided into seven countries. And that time was Yugoslavia. And everybody said, "Tom is here, now it is not Yugoslavia, it is Yogaslavia." So yoga, yoga... everywhere there is a lot of yoga, but it doesn’t matter, it’s good. So in that time, in the feelings, people were fighting, and then it is peaceful. We see many peace. So they said, "We will forget you, but we will not forgive you." So that is two things. I give you, how to say, forgiveness, but I will not forget. So peaceful, good things, everything happens here. What kind of face will you take from this one seminar? And I’m sure you have learned a lot, and you take a lot with you. Now, the second is that in the whole world, in this century, still it is not finished. And somehow, some say it’s good, some say it’s not good. Of course, because many people are dying, and this and that. But somehow people are depressed. So this kind of depression that we have is more dangerous than the corona. True? So this kind of suppression that we have: I lose my job, I am now moneyless, I could not save my money. Why? Alcohol, alcohol, drinking. Coffee, drink so much. Okay, why not? You can drink the coffee. Why not make a cup of coffee in your house? You have a nice, good restaurant, your kitchen. You have hot water. Coca-Cola, black coffee, a little sugar, and water. In the coffee store, in the coffee territory, it is little. And with five euros, six people can drink coffee in your house. And how clean the cup is, we don’t know how it has been cleaned. And how many people, what we call, give the kiss? On this glass, how many kisses that? Oh my God! Is that true or not? Because vibration, vibration is going there, and of course, all people are very good, all men or women, they would drink coffee, okay, very good, but how is vibration there? So, some people said, "I can make you something." That is not the second one that can kiss me. Another one said, "We will become very rich." What is that? How many years has this come? It is said, "Use and throw." Yeah, use and throw. Oh my God, so many cups, money, so many. Then the second one said, "Now it’s not good." So I said, "The use, but then where to throw?" Where should I throw? On this earth. And we see how the earth has destroyed so many through this pollution, all of them. And in the ocean, how much plastic and paper and... So he said, "Swāmījī, one quarter more." So, in your own house, good water, good things, clean things, so why don’t you drink your coffee there like this? And let’s go in your home, even it will not use one euro. So what happened now? The corona came and use and throw. Use and throw. But where to throw? That we don’t know. How can you save your money? Really? One asked me a question in America and in Australia. One Indian couple came, or one man came to Australia or America. Then he worked some work and invited his wife. Wife was working, husband was working, and they got a child. So in five years, they built a house, a nice house, and meanwhile they sent the child to school, and they bought a nice car and a beautiful garage. And the neighbor has one room, not a house, only a room. It is about 70 square meters, and they have about 200 to 300 square meters. Garden, everything. But they have others; they don’t have anyway. So they ask me, Swamiji, how are those Indians? They came, they worked, they got it, they got a house, they got a car, and we have nothing. All the time, we have money. And the Indians said, "We don’t go to the restaurant, we cook ourselves. We don’t throw anything away, and we work and we come back to our house. We don’t go to the hotel, we are not going drinking, this and that." And we got a loan, so we are paying the loan, and we have now a good house and car and everything. We don’t drink alcohol. We don’t do drugs, anything. We are coming home. We are going to get the vegetables and bring our own vegetables like this. That is safe. So in the Corona situation, who were like this? I told many, many times, but nobody listened to me. I can tell you, those who are going now to Croatia, or Austria, or Slovenia, or Hungary, definitely two times they will drink the coffee on the way. And I think, I don’t know, but someone said, in a petrol pump, five euros. I don’t know, or maybe more. That’s how to save now. This is an outer world thing. Now, come to our body, and so, how are we taking care of that? Our body, with long life and healthy and good, and then, how are we going further? So, how will we go? How will we go? What should we do? So, I will tell you what. Practice yoga in daily life. Yoga in daily life is everything, one in all and all in one. I wish you all the best. So, when we marry our child, of course, the girl goes to the other house, and the boy remains there because this is his house. Now it’s changed somehow. So, it is your house will be where you are married, but here you are there. So, when they marry their daughter and send her to the other house, they give more wealth to the girl for that house. The boy had to work very hard for that, so that once she had a house. But now her house is in another house. So, what do the girls do for memory? Now it’s different. But they will put this henna, mehendi, very nice, and when she goes out, she turns to her door, and on the wall, she puts the henna. It means that my family, my father, my mother, they will always remember me when I come out, and in my house they will see me there, yes. So there are many; this is a tradition. But tradition means to control in good conditions, good things, but our respect is one. And wait, wait, don’t hurry to marriage. Don’t go anywhere. But now it’s Hari Om Dasat. So, you know what we call that? That is called... That is something which is... you get in your hand and... Like a popper. Popper. You know the popper? Yeah. So just... it breaks. So you will break, then you will live long. You will be sad, so we have to get from that father’s and mother’s time. Give that education if you want to go so long, long, many countries away, maybe. You get more money, but again, at home. Yes. So we are in that home where you feel spiritual, good, happiness, this, everything. So when those who are, they’re not married. And don’t go from one man to another man, or from one girl to another girl. And one child there and one child here, and that don’t know where it is. What is it said in Czech? "Gde domov můj?" Yes? Yes or no? Yes? Kde můj doma? Kde domov můj? So, my dear, our dharma is true. The first is your mother and father, the second is my country, and the third is my, how to say, just go walking, working, looking, something, that is all. And maybe we can say the third house is Gurujī’s, you know. But where is Gurujī’s house? He left the house. I went out of my house, and after that, I went maybe three times there, or four. Maximum, four times I was at the door. Or I stepped on the first part, what is it called, the veranda. Nowhere. And many, they go at home and run there and job and da-da-da-da-di. That is not right. And therefore, my home is here. Where my home is, your home is here. So you know how much I have love, respect, and attention for this country, that country. And so you are like that. So what I want to say, what you got from here with now, and that is more, please, if my husband is maybe a little bit not nice sometimes, or wife, still time it will come, but let your mother and child, children crying there, and other one is lost, even if you would let, when you lose it, and that child. Je někde sám, nebo je jenom s maminkou? Pak to ztrácíte. This life is okay, maybe—maybe I don’t say good—but next life it will be running like one deer here and another deer is there. They are running here and there, and the hunter will kill it. Again, we end there. So, what will happen next life? Now we have everything good, happy. Therefore, for tomorrow we have to prepare today. Many want, "I want to have a child." And we wish that they will have a child, but that girl’s father first says, "The father and mother, who are they, and will they have a long life?" And then see that you get a child, otherwise. Otherwise, you are torturing everything, and this will come to you, both of you. So, better listen and try to come together again. And you know, when you have children, then you have more love for children. So the father is very happy, and the wife is also happy. Now we are the second generation, and it will come to your third generation, and they will be very happy if all of us are together like this. According to my yoga and my spiritual lineage, my disciples are my generations. So in this country, I have five generations of children here, and they are very happy, very good. Because when I came there, there was a grandmother, and the grandmother was walking with a stick. And her daughter, also grandmother. And then, who? Second, third child, or second child. But there are three, slowly, slowly, five generations. I want to live longer, so I cut my hair. And I said, "Become more dark." He said, "No, because you will be like Sūrya, the sun. So you will be white, nice." So it is said, don’t color your hair. Otherwise, it means you are going back and back. To get white is not easy. The white, this is very long, from birth till now. So, how long were we working hard? Then our white hair comes, then we are retired. Now you say, "I’m great."
