Sri Guru Atma

A spiritual discourse on oneness, the inner self, and a sacred prayer.

"It brings me great joy to see you all. It has been a long time—nearly seven months. Yet, from time to time, we have been with Swāmījī through television."

"Śrī Guru Ātmā Paramātmā Ho Mātma Puruṣottama Sakal Jagake Antara Jāmī Cāracar Kī Ātmā. This is such a beautiful prayer from our Gurujī’s, Mahāprabhujī’s disciple, Śrī Varṇānjī."

The lecturer addresses a gathering after a long separation, expressing joy at the physical reunion while affirming a constant spiritual connection. He delves into a profound prayer, explaining its meaning to illustrate that the Guru's essence is the supreme soul (Paramātmā) present within all creation and within each individual. He uses metaphors of the sun, the limitless blue sky, and the horizon to describe this indwelling oneness, urging purification of the body and mind to realize this truth, which is experienced beyond past and future in the present moment.

It brings me great joy to see you all. It has been a long time—nearly seven months. Yet, from time to time, we have been with Swāmījī through television. That is a very good machine we have. It does not matter from where I speak; it reaches throughout the whole globe. So we were always mentally together, and our satsaṅg, bhajans, sādhanā, practicing, yoga, etc., we were together. That is very, very important. I am so happy to see you physically. That is not attachment, but oneness, to be together. I could feel it, and definitely you can also feel it sometimes—when you didn't have this energy, to get that feeling of oneness with Swāmījī. Swāmījī also feels for everyone as a oneness, like the sun. The sun is far in the sky, but it is for all. And we, too, are all receiving this light, this warmth. So, through this modern technology, we are all in oneness. And that is very much who we are; we are in that connection to our Ātmā, our soul. It is like in one of our prayers: Śrī Guru Ātmā Paramātmā Ho Mātma Puruṣottama Sakal Jagake Antara Jāmī Cāracar Kī Ātmā. This is such a beautiful prayer from our Gurujī’s, Mahāprabhujī’s disciple, Śrī Varṇānjī. We have this book—four books together. Holy Gurujī said it is better to bring it all at once, not one by one. So it is very good. Śrī Guru Ātmā. So our Gurudev, Śrī Guru. "Guru" holds many, many meanings: divine, blessings, Śrī. "Śrī" is very great happiness, joy, blessings, mercy, and properties or wealth—everything. That form is Śrī Guru. If you understand your Guru is like that, then that is called valid. Not valid? The money... how do you call it? Many things. So, it is already Śrī Guru. That is not merely like money, but it is more than that. Then it goes into our body, into our heart, and that is called Śrī Guru Ātmā. So let us see what the Ātmā of the Gurudev is. That Gurudev Ātmā is Paramātmā. So, first Śrī Guru, then Śrī Guru Ātmā—there is Ātmā in that Gurudev. Śrī Guru Ātmā, Paramātmā. "Param" means the highest, the supreme. Śrī Guru Ātmā, Paramātmā, Ho Mahātmā. That is why it is again called Ija Mahātmā. So "Mahātmā" is the holy, the great, everything. So, Śrī Guru Ātmā Paramātmā, O Mahātmā, Puruṣottama. And that is in the human body, in this body, in you, within you it is dwelling—in your body, in each and every cell of your body, in every part. Sometimes it is like this. Then you say, "Yes, now I understand the Guru Kṛpā." Śrī Gurū Ātmā Paramātmā Ho Mātma Puruṣottama Sakala Jagake Yantrayāmī Cāracarkīya. And that is, in this world, it is within all. That Śhrī Guru Ātmā, Paramātmā, Om Ātmā, Puruṣhottama, Śhrī Guru Ātmā. In this one line of our prayer, it is unbelievable how this mind—everyone knows this—but how he brought it all together. Sakal jag ke yantra jāmī: He is the Lord of all. Sakal jag ke yantra jāmī. Chara chara kī ātmā. Chara charī: the movable and the immovable. In that, the Guru is inside. Then you can understand. Otherwise, sometimes we have happiness, and we don't have unhappiness. Sometimes dualism, this and that. Then it is different. Nabharūpa vyāpū nabharūpa. "Nabharūpa" means the sky, the blue sky. How far it is, we do not know, but it is very clean, beautiful. We can sit under a tree or anywhere and look up. It is very pure, clean, without dust, without clouds, without anything. A kind of in-between. So, if you can see it—it must not reflect from the sun—you see the beautiful blue sky. And in this blue sky, you are only you, and you will in that become one, merging into oneness. So nābhārūpa vyāpo nābhārūpa. "Nabharūpa" means the whole endless sky, and nabharūpa vyāpo satyāyāpo. And in that you are; it is a truth. There is a truth you will see. If you want to see what is the truth, then see the blue, clear sky. Blue. And there is a satya inside, so that is yoga. Not only that, we will do this and that. Of course, this is very, very important for moving our body, everything, all five elements in our body. We have to purify them. And for purification, there are many things: prāṇāyāma. Yes, there are many, many things, and we should know that. So, if you look, where is the middle of the sky? We do not know. And so it means you are there, in that where you are looking. It is there—our Lord. There is our friend. There is all our peace, harmony, love, understanding, everything. So it is there. Where will you go to get it? Neither here nor there, neither above nor below, neither behind nor in front, no one left, neither right nor on the right. I am there in that one. Then you will see now, my heart is expanding. I, I am, I become that one. So this prayer that we have is very, very beautiful. And so it is that every second our time is going out. Every second, it will not stop because this is given time, and time no one can stop. And so, in that, whatever we want to do, do it. Today, whatever you have to work, do it. But this today will not be yesterday, and it will not be tomorrow. Therefore, in yoga, in Sanātana Dharma, in this way, we do not talk too much about the past, because the past is gone. So when you cry for the past—anything that happened with you—it is not for crying. Nothing will happen, and if it happens, it will happen more negative, negative... Or tomorrow. Who has seen tomorrow? We cannot see tomorrow. We are always there, present now, today. So neither yesterday nor tomorrow. It is just now. And there we can enjoy our being in oneness with that. It is there. The body will not give us that constantly. Our thoughts will not give constantly everything. But that Ātmā, Paramātmā, Puruṣottama, Sakal Jag ke Antaryāmī—so we are. Sakal Jag means the whole world; we are one in that whole world. That is something we come to. I was often thinking very much about you. And it does not matter where I was; it is like even a little child from the animals or humans. That mother or father is always aware: "How is my child? How is it?" Birds also, dogs also, rabbits also, all life, every day, are there. And so it is that Gurudev and bhaktas are always in that one, and there is expanding happiness. We will... because the object is, it will not remain like that. But what we have that is eternal is within our ātmā, in this paramātmā, and in our self. So it is not that you will get it together today—I mean, not that you will get to say that tomorrow. But it is coming. It is coming. And that coming you will not get. It is like a horizon. We can run with a fast car, or helicopter, or airplane, or rocket. Let's go. The horizon will always be far. So if you think that you want to go into the horizon, there will not be, because that is in you. It is in our eyes; it is here. So that horizon said, "My dear, why don't you look in your eyes?" And when we don't have... In our eyes, open our eyes, then you don't have a reason at all. You close your eyes, there is not any more. But when we have, in the closed eyes, in the darkness, that is more highly other. It is very close but also very far. So I am, I am here, and that's it. So, pray and practice your mantras, Gurudev’s, and our yoga practice to keep our body movable and healthy, with good feelings. But sooner or later, how long? How long will you get this? So it will, and it is in that we are. In this level of our consciousness, yoga and life, you have all come in such a way that you know you are doing exercises and prāṇāyāms, and good food, vegetarianism, purities. But still, that will not remain with us, and we will not be in that. But that is our ātmā—that very tiny spark from the fire, just like this. And so quickly we go out of this body, like when we see in the night a star falling, we say, "Look, the star, the star is down." Where, where? Until it is gone. And so when our soul, ātmā, will go out of our body, it will so quickly go there. And where? Where? To you, your, that one who is yours: your father, your mother, your husband, your wife, your children, your friends, your Gurudev, impurities, and all others. So negativity will fall down, clean, clean... We have so many karmas. We did so much impurity, not only physically, but in feelings, in speaking, in talking, positive or negative, and all in these prāṇas. And that we have to purify, and it takes time. People want to purify. Someone sent garbage to our house. Now we are cleaning it out, but still we are remembering the garbage in my house. That person was like this. For many, many years, they will still remember. And we have to purify all five elements: the Annamaya Kośa, the Prāṇamaya Kośa, the Vijñānamaya Kośa, the Manomaya Kośa, and the Ānandamaya Kośa. All these Kośas mean it is your house or your balloon inside which you are. So, from one after another balloon, we have to come out. And then you will say, "Oh Gurudev, I am now clean from all negative things." And now I am pure. And what is pure there? Nowhere. You are what we call the sky—blue, clean, and clear. You are, we are. I experienced this. I am not repeating what someone told me. I feel it. I understood once. I see sometimes. That is. So it was very nice. It was long. Though I said it is not nothing, but it is material, so nearly seven months. And now we are again, but I was always with you. And now I’m here. We will practice. We will come. We will have a satsaṅg. And one thing is very good: that after a long time—about 17 or 18 years—I will be in Europe for Guru Pūrṇimā. Yes, and this Guru Pūrṇimā, we will try to do. I hope that it will be finished so that any people can go anywhere. We will do it in the space, but we will do it like this: you will come more, and you go, and another comes. In that case, otherwise, we will sit like this. And what we are doing—āsanas, prāṇāyāma—is good for our health, but clean your heart. We shall clean our whole heart, our lungs, and down to our navel. That is the point there. So I’m so happy to see you again physically. We saw the picture, we saw the telephone, everything. But it does not matter how it is; still we are living, and we want to see physically. And so, you know, you came from a far distance. Why? You want to see my body, and I want to see your body. You feel love for me, I feel love for you. What is love? The kṛpā, the happiness, the joy. When there is something good, we come close, and if a wild tiger comes, we don't go close. We try to run. So we are in happiness and with us. So thank you, thank you very much. All from other parts of the world, all our different cities. Thank you and bless you.
