Non-violence is the highest principle

The coronavirus pandemic reveals the fragility of life and the critical importance of prevention. The virus attacks the lungs, severely reducing healthy tissue and causing patients to suffocate from lack of oxygen. There is no causal treatment or vaccine, making hygienic precautions and distancing essential. The most severe cases require intensive care and artificial ventilation. The situation has overwhelmed hospitals globally, forcing adaptations in care and postponing other medical procedures. Prevention through mindful behavior is the best defense against this severe and unpredictable disease.

"Many people say that it’s something like the flu. But the difference is that for flu, we have a treatment."

"I saw the lungs of a patient who suffered from coronavirus. And he had just a 2 to 1 cm area of healthy lung tissue."

Part 1: A Doctor's Perspective on the Pandemic You are a very great doctor, and especially in your subject, in which hospitals you are, what is your role? For about ten minutes, can you give knowledge about this coronavirus? How is it? How will the lungs be, how will the throat be, and how one dies suffering? And nobody, parents will not be able to go to you, somewhere to the grave. Dr. Věra is a great expert, and Svāmījī asks that she speak for about ten minutes on the topic: how is it with the coronavirus, how is it really? Dangerous, harmful—I would like to have a short lecture. In America, in Brazil, in some European countries, and in Australia, the growth of the dead was so fast that the dead bodies were wrapped only in some plastic wrap and were buried together. Even the parents were not allowed to say goodbye to their dead children. I am an intensive care unit leader. I am a neuro-intensivist. It is a different specialty. The intensivist takes care of serious... maybe I will speak Czech, yes? It’s up to you. I am the head doctor of the intensive care unit. So I am the head doctor of the intensive care unit, and I take care of patients who are in a deep sleep and on ventilators. I work in Liberec Hospital, and our unit was not accepting COVID patients. We were a backup unit, and we were preparing the system for how to take care of COVID patients in our region. I must say that we took good precautions, and we were especially taking care not to mix the clean way and the dirty way. We were accepting patients who were in serious need, either because of neurological problems or neurological surgical problems, and we were not sure whether they were or were not COVID patients as well. In such a situation, we treat these patients as if they were positive for COVID tests, unless we get another result from the tests. We have a capacity of 18 beds. The situation was demanding, especially for us intensivists, because when we are treating these breathing paths, all the aerosol comes on us. So we had to take some precautions, and we had all those helping facilities. In the beginning, the situation was not easy. And you can see from all over the world, even if it’s a rich hospital, no hospital can be ready to take in about 80 patients in severe conditions. I am a member of the American Intensive Care Medicine and European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. An Italian ventilation school has a good reputation in Europe. At the beginning of the epidemic, they sent us about 12 or 15 points that we should not repeat the same mistakes as they did in Italy. And we spread it all over the hospitals for intensivists in other parts of the Czech Republic and also to the rest of Europe. I think that if the virus is very catchy, it’s not so lethal. But at present, there is no treatment. Many people say that it’s something like the flu. But the difference is that for flu, we have a treatment. That’s the difference. We do not have a vaccination, and neither do we have the pills. So the patients were treated, but not by causal therapy. There are many theories. How did it happen? I am not a virologist nor a microbiologist. But I think that it is very important to accept these distancing and hygienic precautions. Viśvagurujī said that in Brasilia, in the USA, and in India as well, the numbers of infected people are increasing. And I have the opportunity to work together with a specialist on artificial lung ventilation from Brasilia, São Paulo. He is a leader of all artificial lung ventilation, and in Brazil they made a special hospital specialized in this artificial ventilation, and he is the leader there. And we had the opportunity to have some information from him, and he said that the situation about these patients is really hard. So we will see what the future brings. We don’t even know now what’s happening. In the difficult situation, we postponed all planned operations. So we will see how it will be with the economics, but I think that the hygienic system is important. The first point is from Italy. What was there? It is important to know how to use it correctly. Already spread it. So it means to be very mindful about what I am doing, and the Indian principle of clean hand and dirty hand is helpful for that. It’s important also when we are dressing up or dressing out from these systems. From my side, I think it was also positive to learn how to behave properly. And I like the idea of the founder of the Seznam system, who said that we should live in a way that we would not buy things that we do not need. I think that everything has its positive and negative side. And I must admit that the hygiene level in hospitals is not as high as it should be, probably keeping these. And now we got into some improvement. So when we can take the lesson from it, so maybe we will be glad that we experienced this. Of course, as doctors, we do not wish patients to have these severe conditions. But I saw the lungs of a patient who suffered from coronavirus. And he had just a 2 to 1 cm area of healthy lung tissue. So it’s not always easy, and when there is a patient that comes into this severe condition, and when you imagine that there is no way how to treat him causally, so it’s really difficult. So prevention is the best, and we will see how it develops worldwide and in our country as well. It’s also an economic problem, and the important role is for epidemiologists. We, as an intensive care unit, take just the most severe cases. So we may wish that everything is all right again, that we take our lesson from it, and we go through it. Thank you very much. Thank you. Now please raise your hands. And still, you are about number one. Nobody raised their hands up, but even here they have pulled out. We can do something about seven meters distance. You can sit without a mask for half. It is not a joke. And we don’t know who. They will attack you. Or you will attack them. Just now, there were about seven government ministers. All seven, they got. So they are all in the crown. They are positive. Two are still hanging, and the pain is very terrible. And as Dr. Vera said, in her chamber, they don’t let anybody come in. Parents, mothers, children, anything. This is so, so terrible. And so, please, at least you should give that your children also will do. This is your life, or you die. You died for the problem, but you will kill others also. Until we know that, oh, see, so and so, we are more of now. The government of Czech, they are very humble, and they know that we have such a big āśram here, and they said, "OK, till 150 or 130, you can have." And if, like this clean, clear sky, we have space, very big, they were very humble, these people, and gave us 150 to 160 people more. But please, at least wherever you are sitting, one and a half to two feet distance. Otherwise, you are all, samādhi will be here. Somewhere you are sitting, but this samādhi is not easy. And the corona will not give you samādhi. That will be more torturing, torturing, torturing. Lungs, throat, nose. I don’t know which organs will be affected and be very painful, Dr. Vera. I think she said, or somebody said, the cats are also in this. So the worst was that the patients could not take a breath in. They are suffocating. You can imagine that when you cannot breathe, it is more terrible than some pain. They had no oxygen in their organism. Where there is not enough oxygen in the body, then they fall into an unconscious state. And the virus attacks the transfer of oxygen in the body. We have two blood gases in the organism. It’s oxygen and carbon dioxide. Thank you. You have your mic. I have mine. Oh, thank you. And the virus disturbed these transferring functions. So the worst cases did not have enough oxygen in the organism, and they were suffocating. And the first organ that was infected most was the lungs, and later also other parts of the body. And how are they suffering? Dying? I haven’t seen the dying patient at our ward, and they got pills, and they were put on this Artificial Lung Ventilation System. Extracorporeal oxygenation, or this. And now, how long do you think it will stay? I don’t know. Nevím. If there is some educational reason for that, then we improve. And if one is sitting in one place, and he’s already in this corona, and one person is sitting here and the other is... how far will it not be affected? The scientists that were trying to find out the right distance say that it’s a meter and a half or two meters. And also, in our intensive care unit, the beds for the patients are at a two-meter distance. Because the most dangerous thing is when someone has this virus in the body, but without any signs. Because there are various types of tests for antigens and antibodies. But the test is actually valid only for the day of testing. So we cannot be sure whether we have this virus or not, and we can infect someone. You know that it is not a joke. It is our life and death. And neighbors, husband and wife, children, how we have to clean in our room, how we spray something, and clean from the mouth, water also. We ask Mahāprabhujī, please protect us. And you are all protected. Otherwise, you will always say, "Speak!" Now, who will go and say, who will give the breath? So please, we are very clean here, but anything can happen at any time. In the air, also, a lot of these things can happen. It’s dust, something. She will not say. She is very under, like a knife. So I was dreaming in the night I should have this, so I took it. I have a big one, but still, I said you should have. Okay, no problem, I will do it. Because if I go, no problem. But I don’t want to let you go. It’s very, very important. Number one. I’m sure Dr. Vera will say what I tell you. If this is a truth or not, but we will not make this kind of lecture. If they said it’s not good, it is not; we are happy. But on the other side, they said, all scientists are saying people, may one be affected. Also not good. So, thank you, and keep your mosque, please. There is one girl sitting without a nose. My doctor made my eyes so I can’t see properly. All I can see is everyone’s nose, definitely. And therefore, please, you can sit under that tree and you can open everything, nobody. So, and please, look at your neighbor with you. And if that neighbor is sitting like this with a mask, but half mask, then you get up and go far distance, okay? This is really the question that has been asked by many countries, and they said, "Now the problem is coming for the schools." A všude se řeší, že začne... So many people say, "Should we send our children to school or not?" Say yes and say no, both. So we pray, we say prayer, we say prayer, and prayers will come again clean our everything. nebo ne. And it is a kind of experiment for me. But there are two things: negative and positive. But not about Corona and this. That our yoga and daily life around the whole world? In China, there are three yoga and daily life centers running. And people are very clean, so our sister who is sitting here, she is a very powerful girl, and she is very pure. I’m sure that she’s not eating any bugs or fish, nothing. Maybe before she came to me, but her karma was purified. And she will jump even into the fire. She will not be afraid. So I had three experiments. I have done three. First is myself, and I am now 52 years in Europe. Then Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, many, many Mexicos, etc., many countries. I gave many Abhiyoga bhaktas. Brought them out from the eggs, fish, meat, drugs, alcohol. You know how strong it is, how negative it is, alcohol in the lungs. And anyway, so many people, really, really, I have my disciples, they are very, very disciplined. There is one of my disciples, many, but someone, because someone I can say anything. You also, I can keep anything. So there is one, and she is known as one. Her name is Ekta, and it doesn’t matter what I will talk about; she knows Svāmījī is only making a joke. But she is a very, very good person, honest, and she speaks very truthfully. Also, her family, they are very... I don’t know now if her sons are eating, but at that time... now she is a grandmother, and she looks like you’re going to marry a new young girl now. I’m telling you, please, now you are old. Remain. Sit down. And when I’m here, then she’s supporting down. And when I go to India or somewhere else, I don’t want to tell further. So, my dear, I know that you are very clean, very pure, but it is said, others can hit us. That is that. Now, all my disciples do yoga in their life with mantras, etc. And some, they go away. Again, they go to negative things. And sometimes, they die and fall down. Many things. Anyhow, so I asked every one of my disciples throughout the world, "Have you been affected by this corona?" And there is only one person from whom I heard, from Prague. So then I asked people from the, what we call, there are two, there’s one restaurant. And that restaurant is called Vegan. Someone is coming sometimes to eat vegan. That is not counted. But from those days onward, how they spoke about animals and this and that, from that day they are not doing, not killing anything from the animals. And they said, even they were working in the restaurant, and some people can come only for one day for lunch. Or somewhere, only working there. Then at home, they are doing different. But those who are really honest and are doing this kind of food, they were not attacked at all. Part 2: The Power of Ahiṃsā and Gurubhakti These individuals possess such pure hearts. Their compassion extends fully to animals and humans, of course. They do not wish to take from the bees; they do not even want to eat honey. This is what is called ahiṃsā. Ahiṃsā paramo dharma. Ahiṃsā paramo dharma. Thus, ahiṃsā is the highest dharma. In this way, secondly, there are many other yoga centers. There are many, some of which are 200-year-old yoga centers in Western countries, 300 years old, and so on. Many good sādhus or gurus, whatever you may call them, are still following tapasyā very nicely. All of them still observe tapasyā very well, and especially because of this, they do not eat any animals and remain humble. They may run a restaurant or a shop. When they are eating and someone comes saying, "I have no money," there is no problem—they say, "Please, come and eat." You know the very famous Swami Sivanandaji of Rishikesh. He was from South India. Most of his disciples were from South India, and North Indians as well. One of his disciples, also a South Indian, surprised me. I was in Australia, in Perth, where there is an ashram. In that ashram, you can go and get food. They will not ask you for any payment. They have a big, beautiful restaurant and a beautiful park. Most people go there and sit by a flowing river. It is said, "You come, eat, don’t give money." Yes, but if you want to bring a group of ten or twenty, then of course they will ask for some money, as that is a commercial matter. They are all South Indian, and how nicely they cook! Not just bread and butter, no, no, no. There are many, many items on the menu. Eat as much as you like; they will prepare it for the people. When you go outside, there is a donation box at the door. If you give, you give; if not, it is fine. Then I went to a place in Singapore. I have been to Singapore many times. Right in the middle of Singapore, amidst beautiful stories and many companies, it is written, "Please come, eat, and go—no money." There is a light there, perhaps Swami Sivanandaji’s photo, I do not know. In their restaurant, one lunch costs about 200 dollars. Of course, in a small market, it might be about 50 dollars. Many people go there. They eat and leave. Some may put something in the donation box, and the food is so good. They are all humble people. Once, a very rich Indian man—you know, they are famous for their cars and possessions—was invited, "Let’s go and have lunch." Being very rich, he went to eat there and saw it written, "Please don’t give money; eat and go." That rich man brought a cheque, I don’t know for how many millions. In the evening, they received it and asked, "Sir, have you made a mistake?" He said, "No. Thank you, it is nothing for me. You can build another school or restaurant to help many people." So they practice ahiṃsā. There is no fish, nothing like that. There are many, many yogīs. There are some yogīs who also eat fish and eggs—that is not in our line—but many others do not. I was inquiring at different kinds of yoga centers, and many were completely vegetarian, and they were not affected by this corona. This is the effect of yoga in daily life. All our yoga in life, and how many centers, yoga practitioners, etc. Perhaps you can tell our school or our class where I am teaching. If you can demonstrate that you are not affected by this corona, then we can establish something very good in one or two years, proving that this is the power of yoga. In India, perhaps they eat more eggs and such things now than in Europe. So we can try to find out in our area how beneficial it truly is for those who eat purely vegetarian, so that the coronavirus does not infect them. But not all are in that pure line. Some practice yoga and also eat meat in their homes. Ale ne všichni jdou v té čisté linii, but 80% of them became vegetarian. 80% became vegetarians. In this way, many people have changed. But those who were sitting every evening and engaging in certain activities fell ill. However, we did not see deaths. You know, in Corona, to die is short and sweet, as Dr. Vera said. You cannot breathe. It is like diving into water and not being able to swim. That is also corona. So please, what she said was a great thing. We should be careful. Please be careful. You always come up here, and I give you blessings and so on. We honor all different gods from the whole world and those who maintain very holy programs always. This is wonderful and very good. When you leave from here, do not throw away your mask, drive, and drink Coca-Cola; that will not work. So, Ma, we did not offer our salutation to our Gurudev. We will speak further. But Ahiṃsā Paramo Dharma. Do you all know that? Who knows, hands up? My yoga in daily life. Some did not understand. So, ahiṃsā paramo dharma. We are looking for dharma. Ahiṃsā paramo dharma means we are striving for dharma. If you want to see dharma, if you are dharma, then practice ahiṃsā. I have a little bit of ahiṃsā, not very much. So, before I get permission from Mahāprabhujī, in my little ahiṃsā, I say to those in the hot sun: please come under the trees here and there. You can go further there, you can come more here, you can sit outside me and form a block against the corona from that side. And with our adoration to our Gurudev: He Paraṃpitā Parātmā. Say after me. He Paraṃpitā Parātmā. Ārādhya Gurudev. Paramparā Guru Paramparā, our Satguru Swami Madhavānanda Jī, Ārāḍe Bhagavān Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī, Devādideva Deveśvara Mahādeva Bhagavān Alagapurī Jī, Himālaya, all holy rivers, all great saints in the whole world, in the whole of Europe. Please, bless us. Not only animals, but humans are also suffering. In this situation, people have lost their jobs. Many had no money, and many had money but thought it would last their whole life. How many times do you go for coffee? Or for Coca-Cola? Or alcohol? Or anything? And food, and restaurants. We were spending our money as if it were falling from the sky. Suddenly, God locked all this. People are, we are, sooner or later, again—do not worry excessively—but very soon, day by day, we may still be without money. Therefore, exercise control. With this, a prayer to our Gurudeva, to you and me also. You and I, we are one. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhupāda Nārāyaṇa. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhupāda. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpanārāyaṇam. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpanārāyaṇam. Haṃsabhādas Prabhu Śaraṇaparāyaṇam. Haṃsabhādas Prabhu Śaraṇaparāyaṇam. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhudīpa. Ayaṅam Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhudeepa. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpanārāyaṇa. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpanārāyaṇa... Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpanārāyaṇa. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jaya. Now, please fold your hands, close your eyes, and think of your whole family. All family means your father, your uncle, everything—from the father’s side and the mother’s side, our children and our neighbors. Let us pray. Whatever we did, please forgive us and bless us. Yesterday we were on Pramavar Holīgurujī’s Kakabatīsī. It was last time, two hundred four. Now the second: Fafa, these two letters. Fula. Now, Fula has many meanings. Ful also means flowers. Fula means you have forgotten. Extra. Pula fire ajñānī. So, who has lost it? He has forgotten. He lost it. Pula fire, ajñānī, and therefore, without knowledge. In this context, they are known as ajñānī, meaning without knowledge. A jñānī is one with knowledge. A jñānī is not without knowledge. Lākh chaurāsī bhūkte khānī, and they will be lākh chaurāsī. Lākh means hundreds of thousands. Chaurasi, you know, Chaurasi? It is our 84 years. And that will go in and out: birth, death, and again coming into life, going, and again life. This Lakha Chaurasi means that we will suffer at all times. So it is the cycle of life in which we will constantly turn, we will die, and again we will perish. And in it, we will, like the ignorant, constantly suffer. Lak means one hundred thousand. Chaurasi means we are going and coming, going and coming. Bukte means suffering. Bukte khani. Khani means in this world you have to suffer. Papa phula phiri agyānī. Here, being human and having no knowledge, you will again go this way. So you go back to suffering. Bā bā, bure karam ko tyāg. Ba, ba, the letters ba and ba. Bure, bure means wrong. Bure means bad, not good. We are torturing everyone. Bure karam, what kind of karma are you doing? So you should clean this up. Do not do this, all negatives. Then it is said, "Baba, you should give up all now, whatever you have done. Forget it, and now do good karma." Then it is said, "Jinse kvule tumāra bhāg." If you give up all these negative things that I, or you, are doing—I do not say only you, I include myself also—if we give them up and embark on a good path... Think good, speak good, do everything good, then your luck will rise again. Immediately, good luck. And you know what good luck means? Many, many things. All is good in that form. That is it. Good luck. My God, if we do good in all four directions, then it brings our luck. Then it is said, "Bhavhā bhakti satguru kī karnā bhavhā." The letter "bhavhā," "bhavhā," "bhavhā." Again, tell your tongue and bring it to your lower tooth. Then you can say, "A pak můžete říct, a Bhābhā, bhakti, Satguru," then it goes higher. So that bhakti, if you are doing good, then the Satguru will elevate you. Otherwise, the name is bhakti, but it is not manifesting. I mean, not her, but I only said her name is Bhakti. I did not talk to her. I did not look inside that. Between me and her, I will not tell you. So, bābā, bhakti satguru kī karnā. Please have bhakti for Gurudeva. Do not look at the quality of the guru. But you should know yourself what a guru is. Yet we search for gurus like this and that. Then you are corona. What your mother is doing, she knows, but the child should only go towards the mother’s milk. Afterwards, you will look different. So, Bābā, bhakti, Satguru kī karnā, bhakti kartī kabhī mat ḍarnā. Therefore, when you have Bhakti, when you are practicing it, you should never be afraid. Do not be afraid, but fear exists because you lack Guru Bhakti. Then you say, or you will say, "Gurujī was not good," and "Gurujī was angry," and so on. Yes, then Gurujī said, "Yes, of course. Either you will stay or go. Bye-bye. Ahoj. Ano. Dobře." Little children are very nice. When I did something, it was a little child. "Svāmījī, počkej." I do not know what it means. "Svāmījī, počkej." Those children, you know, they are very... Anyhow, bhakti karte kabhī mat ḍharnā, so when you are doing bhakti, you should not be afraid. Mama, Madhavānandaka kena, Holy Gurujī said, I am telling you, aya jīkam vām, guruk āgyāme nithi rena, in the devotion of the Gurudev one should remain there. Gurū ājñā menit hīre na. Every day be in that knowledge, in respect. Jaya yad kuru rāgurāyi. Remember always God Rāma. Dhan, an dhan, Lakṣmī milī jag mahī. Then you will have enough for your eating, living, lecture, everything—your dress and properties. If you are going to, yāyā yad karo rāgurai, rāgurai je Bhagavān Rāma. Rāgurai je Bhagavān Rāma, Dhan, dhan, Lakṣmī, dhan for enough good eating. Dhan means all properties. And Lakṣmī, monies. My God. Mahāprabhujī, please look upon me, that all my disciples may be given, please, these three things. Undone Lakshmī. I pray to Mahāprabhujī and Devapurījī and Holy Gurujī. It does not matter who is who, or how they are. Now they are very good in this minute. So please grant this. That is my prayer for you to my gurus. That is it. And it is said, this letter R-R-R-R-R... Hanuman, in this world you should stay and protect all. And he said, "Yes, till I come." Anyhow, Rāma apne ghāṭ. So God is in my heart, he said. And there are always bad people. Many people said yes, and many people said, "Ah, like this." So they said to God Rāma, "Bhakta," people said, if you want to say that Bhagavān Rāma is in your heart, then show me. Where is Rāma and where is Lakṣmī? So Hanumanjī, he was like a monkey, but he was Hanuman. He tore open his chest, and in the heart within were Bhagavān Rāma and Sītā. Like this. Hanumanjī said, "See, everybody who wants to see, where is my Rāma?" And he closed it again. How many thousands of years ago was this? Ages: Satya Yuga and Dvāpar Yuga. So that all these problems will go away in the name of God Rāma. There will be no more birth, and there cannot be more death. You will be the best everywhere. So, it is the 30th. This evening we will go further. We have to come to Chaurasi. Chaurasi means eighty-four, and that is that we have to go round Chaurasi Lake, but Gurujī has brought this; we will do it. So, evening—how many days are we here? Three more. Three more? Oh, one, two, and three, very good.
