How to purify ourselves

The foundation of practice is purification and awareness. One must know the proper place for things and act with appropriateness. Common sense is not always taught, so we must learn. We sit and chant without knowing the meaning. Please listen and respect others; be aware of how your actions affect those around you. Good and bad are both within us. We cannot remove darkness by asking it to leave; we must light a candle. Similarly, we must awaken the inner light of knowledge to dispel ignorance. This is our sādhanā. Purification of the body is essential for practice. Fasting is a key method; by not eating for a day, the body digests everything and many diseases are cleansed. This is done for health, though often in the name of spirituality. The first purification concerns nourishment and water. Drink clean water, perhaps boiled and settled. Be mindful of what you eat, avoiding excess. The air we breathe is polluted. Prāṇāyāma is for cleansing the nadis, the energy channels, of this dust. Practice nāḍī śodhana: inhale left, exhale right; inhale right, exhale left. Do this carefully, as incorrect practice can cause harm. Proceed slowly and with concentration.

"Good is within us, and bad is also within us."

"We cannot take off the darkness. But if we light a candle, automatically the darkness goes away."

When you prepare a meal, you place the fire on the stove and the pot upon it. You would not put your cloth or the cooking pot on the door. One must know the proper place for things. If you ask a barber to trim your hair neatly near the ears, and he replies, "I will cut your ears too, so it looks even," that is not correct. We must know what to do. You may be intelligent and expert in many things, yet not know what is appropriate. A husband may ask his wife to sleep on one side, and she may refuse, take her shawl, and go to another room. Often, the wife is seen as powerful, and the man is not. Then she might say, "Please, you sleep in the kitchen." So, in the kitchen he may sleep. There are many such situations. It is okay. Please wait. Today, a little child had her birthday and taught me a Czech word: "Pochke, pochke... pochke." Many people might think it is an Indian tradition to place Gurujī there and the disciples here. At least you should think. Please, you have the right to make corrections today. I am sorry to say, a European who was with us in India was invited to eat. We sat on the floor on a large carpet, each with a plate. We make praṇām to our food, reciting "Anāpūrṇe, sadāpūrṇe." This means we respect the food. But one person, a young man about 30 years old, did not know this. It is not his mistake; mistakes come from one's parents or culture. What did he do? He had two shoes. He placed his thālī (eating plate) on top of both shoes, stood with his legs apart, and ate from there. People were laughing, but no one said anything to avoid hurting him. An Indian lady came, took the thālī up, and removed the shoes. He asked, "Why are you taking my plate away?" She replied, "Not your plate, but your shoes. Please take your shoes out and clean that place. Know that my eating plate is holy, and shoes are different." If there is no space, and many people are eating everywhere, would you take your plate and sit on the toilet or the cooker? This is common sense. But if parents did not teach it, or we are not ready, then we are not. We sit and chant "AUM, AUM," but do not know what AUM is. AUM means "Come, I am coming." Then someone says it is not AUM; it is a cat. "Cat," he says, "AUM, AUM... AUM." So we do not know the language of the cat, what AUM is, or what you are. Please, I know you are more intelligent than I am, or perhaps a little intelligent. You and I are comfortable in our suits. If you go into a church and sit on a chair, but then take your chair and place it elsewhere during a ceremony, what will the priest or others say? It means your mind is elsewhere. Please listen and respect others. If you sit here and there, other people cannot see. You sit like this, my friend. That is not right. There is one girl sitting there, and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten people are blocked by that one lady, one girl. I do not know who that is. Please. Thank you very much. Yes, I am sorry. It is good that I cannot point to anyone and say, "Oh, you are good, well, sit down." I give my mask, but you understand me because I am only one. Please. And that is more wrong. She is wrong sitting there. Yes, please. You can come and sit in front of me, no problem. You can sit beside me, no problem. Thank you very much. Now they are great, good persons. The second mistake is if you are sitting and are hidden, move a little left or right. If you are looking like this all the time, tomorrow you will see Swāmījī with a sore neck and shoulder. If one person does not move, you move to the other side. Oh God! Once, someone was making a video. Holī Gurujī was in Khattu, in Vienna, with about 40 or 50 people. They were meditating, and after Holi, Gurujī was talking. People were sitting in the back, and some always want to go to the front. During a prayer, everyone wanted to see Mahāprabhujī, and Holī Gurujī was right. But this person, it is in the video—if you do not believe, I can show you one day—was a female. All were sitting like this, and she was saying, "Om Jaya Guru Devānī Rañjanādī Nānāhī," and others. When people were going this way, she was going that way. After satsaṅg, H. Gurdjie said, "I think this person is mentally not well." Many are there at night sometimes; then people behind are talking like this, and one is like that. The front people get dizzy, and the back side also. I am sorry that my lecture was very good; otherwise, I brought something great. But that is what I am telling you; it is more than that. You know, you are great. You are a student, a professor, a doctor, a farmer, a vegetable worker—everything. You are great. But many times, this generation is not in that way. So we have to, many of our people, please: those who are a little smaller should come to the front, those who are taller should go to the other side. Otherwise, I will sit here and they will sit there, and they will automatically go outside. What should I tell you again? Mahāprabhujī said, "Don’t torture these, My bhaktas, Maheśvarānand, sit down." So I am behind Mahāprabhujī, and Mahāprabhujī does not know how I am moving. All right? Good. Om Namah Siri Prabhu Deepanarayanam. Om Namah Siri Prabhu Deepanarayanam. Ham sabdhās prabhu saraṇa parāyaṇam. Om namo siri prabhu dhīpa nāra. Who is moving now? Today is beautiful, nice, cool, warm, with good sunshine and good shade under the trees and our... It is in the shelter of our Guru Paramparā, Mahāprabhujī’s. We all should understand our inner feelings, both good and bad. Good is within us, and bad is also within us. One foot steps up, then the second one from down will give up. That is very balanced, but we should not go to pull the negative from outside. What does that mean? It is like this: now there is darkness, and we cannot take off the darkness. We can say, "Darkness, please, I bow down with folded hands. Darkness, please go away." But this darkness will not go. But if we light a candle, automatically the darkness goes away. Similarly, we shall awaken the light within us, and the darkness will go. What is the darkness and light in our body? Ignorance is the darkness, and the light is that which has knowledge inside. Only knowledge is the light. We drive a car, and the sun is setting, so we automatically put our lights on. This light shows our path no matter how dark it is, and we can remove the darkness in this way. Both are in us. When we switch off the light, darkness is immediately there. Or we put the light on, and immediately light comes. But when the sun rises and we leave the car lights on, we will not see. Someone may say, "Please, your light is on." In that way, we do not know, meaning we are in darkness. But when we are in our sādhanā, it is good; there is sunrise, and see how beautiful the sky is. In that way, what we did, what we do, and what we will do is our sādhanā, our Kriyā sādhanā. Even those who have been doing this Kriyā for 20, 25, or 30 years, automatically more light—meaning knowledge—comes, again further and further. But some people, if one day they lose it, forget it, or cannot do it, the next day they do not feel good; they will do the sādhanā first. In that same way, we spoke yesterday and the day before about our prāṇāyāma. For prāṇāyāma and our yoga techniques, the kriyās, etc., we need to purify the body. There are many days in a month to purify our bodies of that kind of darkness. But people will not believe. Those who would like to do it sometimes will not do it. Therefore, it is said that one day, what do we call the day of not eating? Fasting. Why should we fast? Because by not eating for one day, we digest everything. Automatically, our body will do everything good, and many diseases go away with fasting. So, how do we get clean? This cleans our inner body. Many people fast at least three times a week, mostly ladies. You cannot imagine how good the balance and power is for women. They even fast for their husbands. In Europe, not so much. But Indians, even in Europe, observe one day a year for 24 hours. The wife does not drink water or eat anything for her husband. On that day, her husband does not fast, but he knows, and therefore he will also eat some fruit or something, chai, that’s it. Why do they do this? They do it for spirituality. But it is said, Mahāprabhujī said, Gurujī said, the festival of God, etc., is only what we are telling, but we are doing it for our health, and that is why we give up eating for one day. On that day, what you should not drink, what you should not eat, what to eat—they are so healthy. And, of course, the husband should also do it. What does the husband do with that? Whether he fasts or not, he lets his wife fast. There are many men who fast on Monday. Why did I say "in my opinion"? Because people eat the whole weekend—Friday, Saturday, Sunday—they drink water to cleanse. Monday is Śiva day, and on this day we should not eat. So for three days we eat many, double. Then one day we are not eating, so everything is digested. This is for our health, but they said no, it is for God. Then the next day is also for the sun, the moon, and Saturday. This day is what we call the sunny day, Saturday. And that is a black day. So there is also, in Jyotiṣa, you said—I do not know very much about that—because these two days are very hard. One is called Śani, and the others are Rāhu and Ketu. Well, whether they are or are not, it is for our health. Many people, for example, tell and make something for your wife or husband: give up one fruit, so that you will not eat this fruit anytime for my good health, for my husband, or for his wife. So her husband gives up one fruit. They give up watermelon. Watermelon is the symbol of Saturday, that’s it. There are many things going through our Jyotiṣa. That means the husband will be very humble, kind, and good for you. And the husband will be very happy that my wife is so good. She will cook nicely and so on. Now, if the wife does not want to cook, the husband cannot, so we go to a restaurant. That does not put any kind of energy inside. We have these seven days, and through them we should follow some principle, like fasting. In Christianity also, there is something once a day, etc. In Islam, they have one month where they fast. They see the moon. It is very strict; they will not take water in the mouth. In Pali, near Jardin Ashram, there was one Muslim lady who observed this festival very strictly. She was about ninety-eight years old, and then she got a little ill. They took her to the hospital, and she said, "Do not put liquid in my mouth, not even an injection." That is her principle. The doctor said they would not do it. There are many people who say, "Spirituality is like that." You have this and this, yes, it is. Do you know these seven days? And what day will you do or not? You remember only one: Saturday and Sunday are holidays. We go eating and so on. In this way, the purification we spoke of is for the body: how to purify. The best is fasting; our body itself will purify everything. Those who do this well will never have diseases like cancer. Fever or flu can happen, otherwise not. So it does not matter, but if you do not do it, we say it is spiritual. In the name of God, we do it, and so they are more healthy. The first purification is our nourishment. But on that day, we should drink more water. Many people begin fasting but drink about one liter of milk—one glass more, often at lunchtime, afternoon, evening—then you have one liter of water, milk, or more than that. Then it is more than you eat normally. Many people say, "We should not put salt inside, that’s all." With fasting, there is no salt, so okay, we can do it. That is nothing. You can do it yourself, of course. If you have diabetes, then you should fast by eating something, or if you have some disease and need to eat and drink at a certain time, we cannot keep this. Try very, very much. Everything will be purified in our body without any medicine if we fast. So every fourth day we should fast. Look, what is that? All Ayurveda and all Vedas, it’s finished. People above 45 or 50 years should fast, and where you can fast, fasting and programs, then you can eat good, all good. We should not eat potatoes and such things. This is our prāṇāyāma; I am talking about prāṇāyāma. So purify, purify your food. Look at what you should eat and what you should not eat. Second, drink more water. In the morning, drink water. Many people in India boil water and then drink it because of bacteria. That will be anywhere. Now you have bacteria here, not, but you have poison inside. How much are they taking in the water? What are they putting in the water? Chlorine. That is also poison. But if you have this from our good, we are not, you will say we do not have disease and such. Yes, not, but that is also hard. Therefore, you should first bring and boil a little water—five liters—and then leave it standing the whole night. Then, for the upper part, you will take the water. That water is best and very good. Water is good, and if we have not... Nowadays, there are so many different kinds of bacteria, and this... Water is... we do not know what happens with our water. When I came to Europe, they were bringing me water. In Czechoslovakia also, they were bringing me bottles of water—some blue bottle, some different color water, some maybe color without color. When I was eating, they gave me a nice water bottle, and then in the satsaṅg also, while giving the lecture, they gave me a glass bottle of water and a glass, and sometimes they took a photo. Then I came to India and saw people’s slides: "I am you," and I was there, talking there, like this. One picture came: there is a bottle in glass, and I am talking. Some man said from the back, "Swamiji, you cannot give even a lecture without drinking alcohol." I said, "No." He said, "Do not say that to me. The bottle is here, the glass is here, you are talking, and you too are drinking this water. You see, Swamiji, you went from India to Europe, but you have learned alcohol." Here we used to say the time will come that we will have bottles of water now anywhere. The whole world, we need a bottle of water; that’s a big problem. Now they say water is okay, but you will need oxygen. And already this has come, so we have to take this because bad air will go in the mouth. So we are already there. What will be furthermore? Therefore, we shall keep ourselves always filled with water. Leave it standing, and then you will see what is down there. We humans have polluted all water and everything. So in prāṇāyāma, first purification of our water and our nourished food. And from this wood, try to make lace. Give up too much butter, potatoes, and such things. We should not take that much. Too much bread is not good. Before, there was no bread because there was no wheat; this came from America. There were different kinds of corns, and they are very healthy. But these two or three kinds came from other countries. You know, we have a lot of problems and diseases, etc., etc. And what will come again? Long ago, it was in one magazine. They said that in India, or America, in a certain part of America, they made wheat and corn smaller because it will be smaller. Otherwise, it was big, the wheat. So they made it smaller, smaller, about half a meter. In that part, people became the fifth generation. They went down. Now you have seen there are a lot of crops here; it’s only a little like this. Because of your machine, you can cut it quickly. I do not know what they did, that all seeds are the same size. Wait some years. We have already seen that some children are born with one leg or one hand missing. So we shall try, please try what we can do and how to eat. One day, if you cannot get eating, no problem. If you know the restaurant is organic, then do not even go to the restaurant anywhere. Keep your children healthy and happy. After that, what we are inhaling and exhaling: there is a lot of pollution, and that we are doing for our prāṇāyāma. We know that inhale and exhale bring in a lot of dust. I have one glass board table, very nice and nicely cleaned. Nicely, nicely, windows are closed, doors are closed, there’s no fan, no air, and you come from morning, you clean very nicely. In the evening when you come home, you can go with your finger there and write to your wife, "I am going there." So there is no dust; we have no dust. How did it come? Similarly, from this air, in or out, the dust is there, and dust does not want to come to us. But when we inhale, the dust goes through our nostrils. Only through this can we even say we have dust in our ears, really. Therefore, prāṇāyāma, what we are doing, is for taking out all dust. They said it goes through our body, our lungs, etc. That’s why we do prāṇāyāma, more to exhale. And, of course, we should be in a good place. Now you have been here for one week. Then you will come home. How will you feel it? This is a retreat. They call it a retreat, no? So it is treated, but it retreats again. So prāṇāyāma, and then we should do prāṇāyāma very carefully. Where we should do prāṇāyāma, otherwise do not do it, because then it goes into the lungs and remains there. In many countries, including India, in New Delhi, Old Delhi, you go from here half a kilometer to bring vegetables in about one hour, one and a half hours. Very hot, sweating. When you come home and see your shirt collar, it’s black. Then, in the morning, when you clean your nostrils, dark matter comes out, really. So only in one or two hours. What about 24 hours? You are living there. Not only there, but in many countries. Some countries, they said, oh, Croatia is very nice, clean, and good because they do not have many humans there. How much? 90, 90 thousand? No, no, Austria. What is the population? 8.9 million. And in that, what is paid? How many Indians are there in that area? Fifteen more, so that is this. Therefore, you are lucky. I would say that from time to time we should come here every weekend. Now, please, thank you. Or we go to the Adriatic coast. There is air in these windmills. That’s also very good. And that is very good. Then it’s very sweet and very nice. Hakaka. So, Hakaka is mostly where Germans are coming. On the Adriatic coast, yes. So, Nāgābābā. They are making pollution in the rivers, and they also make pollution there inside. You know, so many creams, so much cream on this, and in the sun, burning, and then after, you can see there is a layer, a beautiful layer. It is very good. We can go to very nice Vienna, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary. Europe is very nice everywhere, a very good place. But you do not need to reserve here. Just come, that’s all. If there is no break in eating, we have tilak. Of course, we will say that for yoga people, we will be a little down, discomfort. If you do not have room, bring your sleeping bag. If it is winter, very nice, take it, and then sleep here, really. Persons are so coming fresh, and it is warm, really, because we have a very nice time. You have a little bit, one more, like a nest. And you are inhaling and exhaling good, really, really, really. So hold by 12 hours, years, 12 years, and we are here, happy. So, of course, it’s not only you; all your families were different. Everywhere is good, but this is, we have, because many will drink alcohol and there, and this and that. Here will be fresh. You do not need the water; we are fresh. It’s winter, snow, yeah. Take the snow, ice, ice-cream. Yes, you can make a little chili powder on it. You have a nice one; all should put sugar on it. All, greetings. So, prāṇāyāma. Come for one weekend only, doing pranayama, some pranasanas, then one, two, three, and four times a day. Pranayama, but not too long at once. If you do it all the time, no. It will come out. It expels the oxygen that came, good or bad, there. So, try to come to prāṇāyāma. We will speak about what is called, first, what do we call? Nāḍī śodhana. Nadi means our nerves, let’s say through the nostrils; all nerves will be. So this is nāḍī śodhana. Śodhana means purifying, cleaning. We clean our dress, and then comes pranayama, not anulom, no, no, only bedana. This bedan means making a hole. So, what kind of hole? We inhale through the left nostril, close the left nostril, and exhale through the right nostril. Close the right nostril, and inhale through the left. Exhale through the right, inhale through the left, and right. Twenty-five times, then wait for about half a minute or two minutes. Then from right to left, right to left. After that, that’s called anuloma viloma. So, inhale with the left, exhale right. Inhale right, exhale left. Ten times, or fifteen times, or twenty times. It’s very long, then rest. Then inhale from the right, exhale left, inhale left, exhale right. Similarly, how you did from the left, 10 times or 15 times or 20 times, it is your choice, and the same from this left side also, right side also. When you do this for a whole day or two days, then we do it with both nostrils. That is what we are doing, like normal inhalation and exhalation. So, from the nābhi, inhale, exhale, exactly the same. How long you get breath in, how long you should go out, with both nostrils. Not only that one. You should do it, what is śodhana, the purification, and that. You cannot do it so quickly; that is not good. After five days, three days, then do kapālabhāti. Otherwise, you will have problems in your brain. It is very good, but be careful. Then we can have this; this is that. Your ear will be otherwise disturbed. Yes, your nostril problem can be. Therefore, pranayama, exactly concentrated, then we can do; otherwise, do not do, please. After that pranayama, then you do kumbhak. Again, begin kumbhak with the left nostril only: inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale ten times, then inhale and block the nostrils. Then again, exhale. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale. Then exhale, and then close the nostril. After, again inhale and exhale. This is our prāṇāyāma. It is very beautiful, very good, but it can also harm either something in the lungs or in the eyes, no, the ears, yes. Something in the nostril side goes into the ear, or then the finger and our eyes. Because our prāṇa goes through the nostrils also towards the eyes. So many times we hear that air comes from the eyes, so this we will do further. Prāṇāyāma is very great and the best. Then you will say, "Now I am becoming a yogī." But not every day this and that, the other day this and that. You may do only half an hour for all these natural programs. Slowly, one inhalation, exhalation, then this, then this, slowly, slowly, slowly. You will be so healthy. Do you understand? Do you have questions? Very good. It means no one understood. Okay?
