Explanation of Sri SatGuru Chalisa

The true Guru embodies supreme humility and constant remembrance of God. A genuine Guru is simple, accessible, and serves all without drama, unlike those who remain distant. The greatest quality is to feel one with all hearts, not to seek prominence. The Guru's life is a seamless thread of devotion, connecting all devotees like beads on a mala. Negative thoughts or backbiting break this unifying thread, scattering the community. True service means selflessly helping others, even those who may harm you, as it is one's nature to save. Spiritual practice requires total surrender, offering everything to the divine.

"Even when he was sleeping, he kept a mālā with him, his fingers resting upon it."

"The nature of this Scorpio is to stick, and my feelings and my life are to save someone."

Devadhī Dev, Devīśvar, Mahādev, Satguru Swāmījī, Mahājanājī, Bhagavān, Alakpurījī, Mahādev, Satya, Sanātana, Dharma, Oṁ Śānti, Oṁ Śānti, Oṁ Śānti. We were speaking about the Satguru Chalisa this evening, were we not? I was reflecting on how it was in Gurujī’s time. Holy Gurujī composed so many bhajans. While giving a lecture, he could spontaneously create a bhajan, and from bhajans he could weave stories, and from those stories he could draw out lessons on concentration and meditation. I have seen many Mahātmas and Swāmīs, who were very good of course, but none like Holy Gurujī. Holy Gurujī mostly sang or composed bhajans in the name of Mahāprabhujī. Even when he was sleeping, he kept a mālā with him, his fingers resting upon it. He would always place his mālā pouch on his head. After half an hour or an hour, he would wake up and again take up the mālā of Mahāprabhujī. That is the greatest thing one can do. Many people do this, so that one is constantly one with God’s name. And who is your God? There is one God who is supreme, the highest. He said God Himself is that also, as the God. Gurujī was always, and Gurujī was very simple. Unlike some gurus or some ātmās who become hidden and do not approach normal people—when normal people come, they do not even look at you and just go away—people stand far away looking, hoping he will glance their way. That is a drama. But Gurujī, if somebody was looking, would immediately stay there. Even with many people present, he would go everywhere. Mahāprabhujī was even more simple than Gurujī. When people came, cooking and eating, Mahāprabhujī was mostly serving the food. Of course, everybody would say, "No, Gurujī, please sit down, please sit down." After people finished eating, if there was someone who came a little late and felt very ashamed, Gurujī would say, "Mahāprabhujī, Mahāprabhujī takes food and he goes. There is one person sitting in a corner without eating." That Mahāprabhujī is Sarvatra. Sarvatra means everywhere. He knows what is going on in everyone’s heart. That is what we call the humbleness of God. You saw that in the Mahābhārata, where Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa gave to others. They were praying for milk and butter. If it is like this, somebody will say, "No, no, I will take it, I will take it." He will give to all. Because God does not become, "No, I am, you go away." But others are different. Similarly, in every way, let’s say I tell you—because you people know more, I don’t know how it was, but it’s written, and you also have not seen that person—but we see how Jesus was simple. Even at the last times, he was washing the feet of his devotees. Many would not wash the feet of Jesus. Many would think, "We will do only this, not like that." So there’s a difference between Jesus and his disciples. One who is as humble, as kind, as one feels in the heart of all—that one is the greatest. Not the one who wants to sit in the front and goes to sit there. They know, Gurudev knows who and where. Because there is a heart-to-heart connection. We don’t want drama. You know, I have one of Mahāprabhujī’s cloths, his kurta. Mahāprabhujī himself would take needle and thread and mend it. He did not want a new one. If there was a big hole, why should I throw it away? I have many such things in the Vienna ashram. Similarly, our Gurujī, and of course he was a very strict Gurujī also—Mahāprabhujī was also strict on righteousness. So in that way, what we yesterday... We asked about the Satguru Chalisa, and so I translated this, and that was the poem. After comes the Sadguru Chalisa. Oṁ Namaḥ Sīrī Guru Devājī Sabhā Kā Sarjana Har Vyāpakāyantarāvarame Parabrahma Kratar Devānaka Paramdeva Ho Śivru Barambhar Tumhārī Kṛpā Ke Binā Hove Nai Bhavapar Ṛṣi Munī Savasanta Jana Jappe Tumhārā Jāpa. Ātmā Gyān Ghāṭ Payākar Nirbhay Ho Gayā Āp Satguru Chalīsā Jo Paḍhe Uraguru Dhyāna Lagāī Janam Maran Bhava Dukh Mite Kāl Kabū Nahī Khāī Satguru Chalīsā Kān Sune Hṛddi Siddhi Sukh Pāī This was a poem. Yesterday, I explained it to you word by word. That’s why I did not repeat it again. So, Caupāsī, 40. And further, what is in the poem? "Oṁ namo gurudeva dayāla bhakta janakeho pratipāla." This is a glory. It is the Gurudeva said about Satguru, like the Hanumān Chālīsā. So when we go word by word, we are making a glory of Hanumānjī. Oṁ Namo Guru Dev Dayāla. Oṁ Namo Guru Dev Dayāla. Oṁ, we know Namo. Do you know what Namo is? Many times I have told you, but you have forgotten, you see. Thousands of one fruit fall down, it doesn’t matter. So Pārvatī, she’s telling everybody, "Always I know." But then the other one, because he said, then the other one said like this. But mostly, no one, of course, it’s not your language. How many years I’ve been here, but I cannot speak the Czech language. I should play with the children, then I will go better. Oṁ Namo Namo means I surrender. I surrender to Thee. And what does surrender mean? That is very important to know. All the time, when the kings were there and the queens and even their children, and other farmers who were working, they always said to the king and to them, "Pour down and surrender in every case." Even they will say, "I can give my head for you." So surrender means everything. We are all different now, but in humbleness, kindness, peacefulness, etc., is surrendering. We give you something, you give me one fruit. We give you a coffee or give you tea, or give you some cup, or open your door, open your window. I will wash your dress. That is surrender, that I give you everything. Surrender, and finally, what they said: I have surrendered to you everything, but one thing still I think I couldn’t. O Lord, I surrender to you. What means like this? They can slaughter your head, but they will not do. They will not do. But what does devotion mean, and what is surrender? So, the word which I said, "namo," means surrendering. So there are different names for this and that. So, "Oṁ NAMO" also means blessing, getting blessing. So we say, "Namo Nārāyaṇa," and they say, "Give us blessings." This is a very humble word. To whom? Gurudev. Gurujī said to Satgurudev. After coming, Dayal—I have given a name to someone, a very nice name, this Dayal, Dayalpuri. The girl’s name, many, so many of them, Dayal, also Dayal, Daya, merciful. That is merciful. Now you know what is "Namo"? Surrender, Gurudev. But we know the Gurudev. Dev means God. We can tell the teacher, guru, but spiritually, when we say guru, then we say we have to give the deva. That’s called God. And guru only, we can say it in German, we say the Lehrer, teacher, etc. So, that guru, whatever he is giving you duty, or your guru who is teaching us, guru, everything. But Deva, he will not get inside Deva. But we can’t be said that Dayal, so Dayal means merciful. Again, it is said, "Whatever happens, I surrender. You are Dayal." Then Gurujī will say it when we are very humble. That means you are very dayāl, dayālu. So, there are words very, very good to go in. And for what? Oṁ namo guru deva dayāla. Now, after what is Namo—surrender, Guru is Guru, Deva is God. Dayal, merciful. Who? Gurudev. Guru, God. God is very humble to us. Therefore, he said, "Bhakta Janakī ho pratipāla o Gurudev, Bhakta Gurudev, God or a God whom you accept, Bhakta Janakī, Bhakta, Bhakta." You know, we call Bhakta, and we call other, our people, our friend, people very kind, etc., Bhakta and Jano. So, Bhakta, the devotee, and Jano, more, not only one. So we are all sitting together as one. In that time we are all in one, and one in all. For example, we have this mālā. There is only one thread and many seeds. So Gurudev puts all in one: humbleness, kindness, and Gurudev feels he is mercy, that thread. And when you go, if one of us feels that the guru is not good, or this and that, you are breaking the thread. And what happens? All seeds go away. They will fall down one here and there. So, when one person makes a negative thought, negative feelings, and then it is said, backbiting. So, backbiting is when they are talking negativity behind us. We know that there is, for example, a white plate, and if there is one little black spot, everybody will look only at the black spot. Or, for example, we are eating on the dining table, on the dining plate, and everybody is eating. And what happens? Something is stuck here for your food, or you have a beard and somewhere something is hanging, but I don’t see. But you see, and not only you, you also, then someone says, "Moment, please, sir, you can clean it up." Nothing happens. It’s okay. He will say, "Thank you." But everyone’s eyes are there. But nobody will look like that when there is nothing on it. That is it, everyone. Their eyes will go there, to a little spot. And a nice person like you, he will say, "Sorry, Swāmījī, please." Nothing happened. Everybody said, "Thank you, thank you." Even I will say thank you, and others will say it. It is always hanging on his beard, but he cannot see. You see, now we have our mirror. And so we are going and looking into the mirror. So that is a very different thing, how to come. There was one very big company, and many people, about 200 people. The boss of the company on Christmas day. So nowadays we are all making some days before Christmas and giving everybody something for Christmas. So they invited him to dinner. And on that day, the company boss, or head, sent a letter: "Everyone, please come with your partner," and partner means husband and wife, not just any neighbor as a partner. So that letter came. And he was very happy, and he gave it to his wife. And his wife was so happy, "Oh, I will see the boss, and I will see so many people." The children said, "We will go, too, so please, please, because they are the people, and they, and the..." Everybody, they have that table number, name on a dining, and they were serving food and like this. So that was her husband, and on the other side was his wife, then was his friend, then his wife beside him, and like this. And they were eating, and that lady who was asking for children and so on, she’s going to be eating, and beside her was one person. Something happened. So she was kept aside all the time. And that man is a very humble best friend. It can be her father or her brother, but now he feels very unpleasant. Anyhow, he came, they all went home, finished, and then the children came. "Mother, how was the good eating?" "What house did you enjoy?" she said. "Yes, but what?" You know, my neighbor, when he’s eating with me, always takes from my plate. And because his eyes are like that, he wanted to eat here, but his head goes there, so he could not eat. So, like this, it can sometimes happen. But one husband could have said that, "I cannot come to my friend." And I would like to speak something with him and her. You could have come this side. So, sometimes people have not personally, but someone is making it like that. Therefore, the person knows that his eyes are like this, and he didn’t have his glasses. So, this is sometimes, and after, people always think, "Oh God, I was talking negative, but why? What was it?" Just one spot like that, so this is very important that one should know how and where. Bhakta Janoke Ho Pratipala, so it is said: Oṁ Namo Gurudev Dayala. Dayala means merciful. Bhakta Janoke means all bhaktas. Bhakta Janoke means all bhaktas have Pratipala. Pratipala means protecting us. They protect us, they give us. They are humble to them. Everything. This is what Sadguru Chalisa, Holy Gurujī, is doing. Each word. It is full of wisdom, spiritual or whatever it is. So, Holy Gurujī said that when you speak something, and whatever, then it should be very clean, and you know anything that you stop there. Like, like there is a thread, a beautiful, nice thread, and that is from some very... now we have plastic. And we make this our mala bead. So we are putting the pearls, the pearls in the thread like this. So you are putting one after the other, and it’s just going very peacefully, very nicely, slightly. That is humble, kind, peaceful, relaxed, pure. That is our person, like that. Very smooth. Then we are all together. We all become one. When we have this, throw it. And when it is, it is also. There is one beautiful poem from another saint, someone, and that one, he said that the seed is broken and the seeds fall down. How will you come again? So, that is one poem. Very nice from one person. There are two, and both are from him. So the word is very important. Bhakta Janaka is Pratipāla. We should be a protector for our friends. We protect them. We give them everything. And if something negative, anything, we will clean it. Or even we will not tell him that there is some spot or some dust. And he will be your friend beside you, and he will do it just like that, or take it off, and even we did not know. That is our best friend, and not that look, "You were there, and you are dirty, you did not dress this way," or something like this. That is the negative people; they distract people. But how long will it go? That spot may be on it. It will go in the washing machine. For him, it’s okay. But the other one will be negative in you. That’s very important. We can make nice words or like anything. That’s important. So many are going quickly in the front, and others, they said, okay. Many people, they slowly go back. And others come back. That means, when you are very hungry, there we have a tradition, and here maybe also, so when this man, they are sitting together on the table, on the desk, so his good friend, a new friend came, then he will take and give you in your mouth, "Please eat," and other world will give you. So what to do? They are friends, but there are some people, negative ones, and there is a very nice story. There are stories, and something is reality. So there was one girl and her parents, they... She made ceremonies for her daughter and the boyfriend. He comes from another village somewhere, and they invited them. Always, it is first the man, the boy goes there and takes her. Not that she goes there and takes him here. Then it will sit. This girl is not good. I’m sorry, boys, okay? Yes, that’s why many are sitting here, and they want to marry and see, but they don’t. They are only looking like that, but they don’t go close. Yes, that’s the respect. And so when you go to the church, maybe your first boy comes there, and then she goes. And then he comes and takes her to the puja, or whatever, yes or no? In the church, no? She will not go and stand there, and then a boy is coming. And the boy will not come then? If the boy will not come, then what will humiliate this girl? This is a human feeling. So after that, when they are there, from the girl’s side, they make a joke. And the joke has to be, so they made an evening, they had a wedding ceremony. And then the girls again go to their parents. And boys, they are there where they have stayed in some house. Still, they cannot take the girls away; they were remarried. Okay, you go, and the girls come home. But they will give him, how we call, all friends, we care for them very carefully, everything. Now in the morning, they invited them for breakfast, and they prepared very nice food. And their friends come, the girls, brothers, and a few people come there to serve. And they invite that boy who is married; they will bring him first some breakfast, very nicely. And they said, "Who is your best friend or family member? We invite them for the breakfast." But at that time, they had a person who took care of these young boys—how to sit, how to place the hands, how to eat, etc. So, an elderly man was with them. And he said, "The people will make a joke." And I know what they will do. A very nice person like Dharmarāja, you know, this Dharmarāja is always very... he is sitting with Dharmarāja, you know, that’s fine, that’s it. So the girl’s side brought bamboo sticks, only about one foot long. And everybody would come give them two bamboo sticks on their table. Dharamraj knew why they were doing something, and he said, "Already I will be beside you, and I will only make it like this, and when I make it, then they are making some joke, but it will be nice." So, the people were standing on the girls’ side. They said, "Please, who will come for eating there?" What is that? Good eating, like this, like this, like this. So, they were sitting there, and calling them to the table. But they said, "We have a tradition here in my girl’s house." Please, can you give your hand? Yes. And they tied one stick here, a bamboo stick. Tied in both hands, everybody? And then they give the food. Please eat. Now how will you eat? The elbows bite tight, and they make a joke. But they had grandparents with the Dharamrāj. He said this is what he said, because we have a tradition also. You have a tradition, and we expect very much that we have a stick tied here, and food will not come like this. But we know that is our tradition. Our tradition is different. We don’t eat ourselves; we give it to others. So, take eating to your brother, take eating to this brother. He gives him there, and he gives him quickly. They said, "You are the good guest." So there is the joke. In the joke, what kind of joke can you have? And you don’t say why, and this and that, we will go away. No, no. We are the guests, and we will do everything. Please bring more. But now, what are you drinking? Alcohol or what? This? No, we drink the nice juice or milk with the saffron, yes. And again, we give because our hand is like this, and come the neighbors or guests, please. So there are many things, but these are things to learn how to do. And therefore, this idea and that idea, and that even if someone is backbiting, we should not be angry; only we know. And next time we will see him, and what will happen then? So therefore, that "Oṁ Namo Gurudev Dayāla, Bhakt Janoke Ho Pratipāla." For our Bhakta, they all will give us confidence, peace, harmony, and knowledge. And this is what we are coming to the satsaṅg. Next word. Par upakāra dharo avatāra. Very nice. Par upakāra dharo avatāra. Par means this, the next. You are. You are, not me. Next, the word "upkār." This word is called "upkār." Upkār means: do good things. If there is some dust on your door, you will take it away. The house? Oh, thank you very, very much. Please, thank you, thank you. Or, you need something? You are in the whole house, and you, you are very... you feel very, very painful in the body. Who can come there to bring me medicine or something? So... Immediately, we come and help them. That’s called upakāra. That you did good for others, and what you did good for others is great and great for you. Upakāra dhāro, do that. Avatāra. For that, you are an incarnation. You are also an incarnation, a God incarnation. So, who is good thinking? He follows everything. And keep always good and good outside even. So, parupakāra karo avatāra, that is coming here on this world. "Dubat jagme hans ubāra." So who is that one? "Dubat" means who cannot swim and sinks in the water. Jagme in this world, Hans ubara, there was a Hans, you know the Hans, Hansa in the water, you know? He will take us, and he will go and bring us out. And so this Avatāra brings this, who is going down in the water second, so that sent. That person, that incarnation, who is doing good and good and good, that person means you are the good one, you are, and what we do is darśana. A good person is a good darśana. And those who have no good darśan, they are like dust. You can say it is a toilet. So, Tera darśan kare badbhāgī. Therefore, there is a person whom we can see like that good one, and who is doing that is a bird. Bagi bird means a great, and bagi means good luck. We are the good lucky; that good luck from that person helped us, otherwise we will die. Jenki Lagan Harris, and this person who is like that Jenki, he is Lagan, always looking for good things. If there is everything okay, not only suffering, or someone is suffering, and he said in Hungary long ago. We went for a walk. I like to walk, always in about one and a half to two hours. We were walking, and I was walking quickly. All was, and then we were drinking coffee somewhere. And we come. On the road, there was something like a hole, and one person fell down. And we thought he was dying. And there was a little village, so there was one house. Four or five people were sitting there. And we said, "Look, look, please, can we ask for an ambulance or this?" Then one man fell down in. He said, "Every day, he’s falling inside." His work is only this: going in the shop, and he drinks and drinks, and he falls sometimes, and some people take him out. There are also such people like that, but still we took him out, and we said, "Please, we shall help." So, a good person also will always make the good things. And others will go again and again, you know the story. One disciple and one bhakta went to drink water, and there was a very nice, drinkable lake. So Gurujī and the disciples were sitting there, and a scorpion fell down in the water. So what did Gurujī do? Gurujī put water under his palm and broke him out. While pulling him out, the scorpion stung him. You know it’s a poison, and again he falls in the water. Again, Gurujī took him with the next hand, again saved him out. Again he falls down. Again, Gurujī takes him with both hands, and the disciples said, "Gurujī, this creature is not good. Please don’t, he is always sticking to you. Let him die." Gurujī said, "The nature of this Scorpio is to stick, and my feelings and my life are to save someone. Someone kills, and someone saves." Therefore, he said, "I will take the shoes and kick him." Hurry up, he said, "No, no..." So, this is the seva. Seva is the seva. Seva is the seva, so that one has concentration and is always turned to God. Gurujī said, "Your names are thousands of names, Sukhadāyī." Your good names are always good for others. jaháč means the boat, and in the boat is inside, and that person who is taking with the boat, he is humble and kind for you, and through that, that life, that jīva, that person or animal, anything, you can come out. That’s it. So this is seva satsaṅg, and if someone backbites, let them, always let them. Otherwise, it will be war; it will become war. And if you are peaceful, then it will not be like this. So this was Gurujī’s. Sadguru Chalisa, and after we will... today we are going... today is Friday, oh God, and evening you are not anymore here? Some are after lunch, who is going? Hands up. Wish you a very good journey. And next, there is also this Sadguru Chalisa, which is so good. This Sadguru Chalisa is so amazing. We will continue in it. It is beautiful, even the King and the Mahārāṣṭra, they are looking for Gurudev, where can Gurudev be. Next time, all the best. So, this one dohā, and one chopāī, and further. This is called the dohā poem, and this is some kind of others. I don’t know English. Deep Nayan Bhagwan Ki Om Namah Siri Prabhu Deepanarayan. Om Namah Siri Prabhu Deepanarayan. Hama sabdhāsa prabhu śaraṇa parāyaṇaṁ. Om namo siri prabhu dhī.
