A commentary and translation of the Ātāśrī Satguru Chalīsā, a devotional hymn.

"You are the creator for everyone. You are present outside and inside. You are the Supreme Divine incarnate."

"Those who will read the Satguru Chalīsā... shall concentrate, meditate, and chant His name. Janam maraṇa bhava dukha mithi... You will be free from the fear of birth and death."

A speaker provides a line-by-line English translation and explanation of the Satguru Chalīsā's introductory poem and first verses. Our subject is the Ātāśrī Satguru Chalīsā. First comes the introductory poem, and then the main text of the Satguru Chalīsā. The Introductory Poem Oṁ Namo Śrī Guru Deva Jī Sabkha Sarjanhāra Vyāpaka Antara Bāharame Para Brahma Kartāra. I was translating this already, but I will say it again. We worship and pray to Thee, O Gurudev—Satguru Devjī, Devpurījī. Sabka sarjanhāra: You are the creator for everyone. Vyāpaka antara bāharame: You are present outside and inside. Para Brahma kartāra: You are the Supreme Divine incarnate. You are the Lord God of the gods. Therefore, again and again, I bow to Thee and repeat Thy mantra, Your name. Without Your mercy, nahīṁ bhava pāra—no one can cross the ocean of worldly existence. The ṛṣis, the munis, and the sādhus of Śāntajana, jabhe tumhāra jāb, they all are meditating on You. Ātmā, ātmā, dhyāna: the knowledge in our heart has been given to our heart. Nirvaya hogaya ap: and You are in our heart, within us. This is very great. Ātmā jñāna ghaṭa pāyā kar, nirvaya ho gayā ap. Therefore, with ātmā jñāna in the heart, within us, we have nirvaya—we have no problems, we don't have any fear. And then we have no fear and no problems. Gurudev, You have given us this. On the Satguru Chalīsā The Sadguru Chalīsā—those who will read this Sadguru Chalīsā. Sadguru Chalīsā is the name of the Gurudev's holy words, what He has written. These are the holy words that Gurudev has written, like the Hanumānjī Chalīsā, and this is the Satguru Chalīsā. Those who will read the Satguru Chalīsā, Urguru Dhyāna Lagai—they shall concentrate, meditate, and chant His name. Who will read this Satguru Chalīsā? They will meditate with concentration. Janam maraṇa bhava dukha mithi. Janam: birth. Maraṇa: death. Bhava: there is no more fear of returning (to the cycle of rebirth). It liberates you from the fear of returning. So janam and maraṇa are gone. Dukha mit jāy: no more problems will be there. You will be free from the fear of birth and death. Kāla kabu na āy: Kāla, Yama, will not come near. Yama cannot approach you. No one will come when you die and go. No negativity will come. When you die, nothing negative will prevent you from walking (on your path). Those who will listen to the Sadguru Chalīsā with their ears will attain ṛddhi, siddhi, sukha—prosperities, spiritual perfections, happiness, and glories. And whatever you wish, you will get it. That's very nice. Whatever we want, if we read the Sadguru Chalīsā, it will come for you all. All will be good. Janam safal ho jāy: in this life, our life will be perfect. Suffering will end; it will be forever good. These are the four points—one, two, three, four, and five. This is what we call the introductory poem. Then comes the Chopāī. The Chopāī The Chopāī consists of about 24 verses. Oṁ Namo Gurudev Dayālā. Oṁ Namo Gurudev Dayāla. O Gurudev, I bow down to Thee. You are the merciful. Bhakt Janakī ho pratipāla: You are the protector of all devotees. Par upakāra karo avatāra: and therefore, for the supreme benefit of all, You incarnate. For that, O Gurudev, You are incarnating. Dubata jagame haṁsa ubhāra: those who are drowning in the world (the ocean of existence) are lifted up like swans. They will not sink to the bottom but will rise above it. Terā darśana kare badabhāgī: O Gurudev, great are they who receive Your darśana (divine sight). Jinki lagana hari se lagī: that person will have their concentration fixed on God. Such a person will turn more towards God, concentrating more on Him. Mana vañcita kārejī sarī: so what you wish, it will become successful. Whatever you wish for, you will have success in it. Life will be good. Oṁ Namo Gurudev Dayāla, Bhakt Janakī Ho Pratipāla, Parupakāra Dharo Avatāra, Dubata Jagame Haṁsa Ubhāra. Terā Darśana Kare Badabhāgī. So, O Gurudev, those who will have a darśana of You, Gurudev, they will be the most fortunate, and they will all the time have concentration and feeling for God. Nāma jahāja terā sukhadāī: therefore, the boat of Your name will carry us across the ocean very comfortably. Dhare jīva pāra ho jāyī: any creature who boards the boat of Sadgurudeva, they all will reach the farther shore. Para Brahmā Guru ke avināśī: that Supreme Divine, Bhagavān Parabrahma, the Guru is avināśī (indestructible). Gurudev is avināśī. Avināśī means He does not die; He is immortal. And He is the Gurudev. Śubha means pure, clear. In our mind, we should not have negative thinking. Don't think somebody will do this or that. (Otherwise) it is like having milk and adding a few drops of lemon to it—everything is spoiled (curdled). Śuddha means pure. Śavarūpa: that form, our body, sādhanā (spiritual practice), sukha, rāśi—all and all will be happy. Guru Śivaṁ data koī nahīṁ: there is no giver (of grace) other than the Guru, who is Śiva. There is no one like Gurudev. Rājā, Bahatsa, Asghar: even kings and emperors bow and pray to Gurudeva. Guru Sanamukha, jaba jīva ho āve: when any creature comes before the Gurudeva—any creature, also humans—koṭi kalpa ke pāpa nasāve: the sins of millions of cosmic ages are destroyed. Everything from thousands upon thousands of births, everything is purified before Him. Jisaka, jisapara guru kṛpā hoī: on whom the Gurudev's kṛpā, blessing, will be. And this is the Guru-deva's blessing. Those who receive Guru-deva's blessing no longer need anything else; they have everything. Prabhu Śaraṇa Parāyaṇaṁ Haṁsāvadāsa Prabhu Śaraṇa Parāyaṇaṁ Oṁ Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī.
