Our body is a miracle

An evening satsang on the five sheaths (kośas) and holistic well-being.

"Our entire being becomes very pure—our body, our energy, our mind, our knowledge, and our peace and harmony."

"We must understand all five kośas. The first is just our physical body. We must keep this body very clean."

A spiritual teacher addresses a gathering at an ashram, introducing the concept of the five sheaths that constitute human existence. He begins with the Annamaya Kośa (the physical sheath), emphasizing the importance of pure nourishment, a sattvic diet, and maintaining bodily purity for a long and healthy life. The talk connects physical purity to managing emotions like anger, which harm the body, and invites attendees to meditate and absorb the divine energy of the place.

Good evening and welcome, everyone, to this beautiful, divine atmosphere and to this beautiful place, surrounded by beautiful trees of different kinds, all existing in harmony. Here, there are also different kinds of animals and birds. In this ashram, which we have had for many years, thousands of devotees have come. Even our holy Gurujī, Swāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān, is present here on this earth. Many other sannyāsīs from different parts of the world have also come, are coming, and are here now. This earth here is very divine. We are very happy, feeling harmonious, peaceful, and divine. There are many things we can speak about. Whoever comes into this area, even if some arrive without good feelings or with different thoughts, finds their mind cleansed. If not completely while here, then by the time they return home to their countries, they will be completely changed. In this way, our entire being becomes very pure—our body, our energy, our mind, our knowledge, and our peace and harmony. We call these the five elements or principles of the body. We call them kośas. There is one kośa in the Jewish language, but that is a different kośa. This kośa is like a chamber. So there are five chambers, five sheaths. They are divided, yet they are one. They are separate, yet together. The first chamber is the Annamaya Kośa. "Anna" means nourishment, like our food. We eat our bread, we drink water. This body is given to us temporarily. As the great ṛṣis have said, there are 8.4 million life forms, and from these, one is human. There are many, many beings—our earth is living. Countless creatures are under our feet, in the water, and in the space. These five elements are living entities. That is why we say even the water is living, the air is living, and this earth is living. We must understand all of this. If we remain pure and good, this body, our life, will remain as fresh as when we were newly born. If we could remain good and pure, our body would stay as pure as at birth. There is a great soul, a sādhu, Saint Kabīr. He said that our body is like a cloth given to us temporarily by God. We must return it as clean as we received it. That is the right way. Much is said on this. Our body has layers. We must understand the water, the air, and the nourishment. For example, if people put alcohol into an engine... In the old railway engines, there was only water. With the heat from coal, they made the water hot, and with this steam, the engine would move. There are also cars. Some run on oil, others are the same kind of car. If you put kerosene in a petrol engine, it will not go. Similarly, the engine of our body requires pure water. This is what our body needs: air, water, and nourishment like a mother's milk or cow's milk. This milk is not water; it is nourishment. Then we have fruits and juices. Fruit juice is a liquid, but it is not water; it is nourishment. When we utilize this... Take grape juice, for instance; it is a nice sweet meant for us. But when we make it into alcohol, it is not for the body. As a medicine, it is okay, but not for this engine of the body. Those who avoid such things will have a far longer life. Thus, we must understand all five kośas. The first is just our physical body. We must keep this body very clean. We have one problem: our tongue in our mouth tastes sweet, bitter, hot... but once the substance goes down, there is no more taste. We have ice cream, but in our vocal cords, there is no more taste. There is a sensation of hot or cold, like from chilies, but after they go down, the taste is gone. There is a difference between our problems and our good feelings. Our body is a miracle; if we do not treat it well, it is not good. After this comes prāṇa. Prāṇa is great. So the sheaths are: Annamaya Kośa, Prāṇamaya Kośa, Manomaya Kośa, Vijñānamaya Kośa, and Ānandamaya Kośa. Annamaya Kośa: "Anna" is the food, all that we eat. For humans, that nourishment should be sāttvic. Other animals know this instinctively. We must bring ourselves to purification. Tomorrow we will speak again. Try to understand your body. In our body, we also hold onto anger. Jealousy—jālan means heat—and that heat is what we call anger, hate, and so on. This destroys the body. Once you are angry, you can check in your body. Ask any scientist or doctor: "How many good cells in the body died?" There are many things like this. In our Yoga in Daily Life, Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī, Devpurījī, and Holī Gurujī give us this energy here in this āśram. So come, meditate, be peaceful, walk, etc. Now is the time for prayer.
