The Inner States: Jagrat, Svapna, Suṣupti, and Beyond

A spiritual discourse on the states of consciousness and the importance of sleep.

"First, we are Jāgrat. Jagrat means awake... This is whatever we see now: we were cooking, we are eating, we are drinking, we are shopping—anything we are doing. This is from outside to inside."

"What this sleep means is that we are 100% aware about our Self, and so it is very comfortable, relaxed, and peaceful. That is your life."

Swami Madhvānandaji addresses the community, explaining the three common states of waking (Jagrat), dreaming (Svapna), and deep sleep (Suṣupta). He emphasizes the divine quality of sleep as a time to be with the inner Self (Ātmā) and introduces the higher state of Yoga Nidrā, described as a conscious sleep where yogis are awake to the Supreme. The talk concludes with a transition to the Sandhyā prayer, marking the junction of day and night.

Swami Madhvānandajī Bhagavānakī, Satya Sanātan Dharmakī, Sabṛiśrī Muni Mahātmāokī, Jai Jai. It is a beautiful day once more, with a very pleasant atmosphere. Your thoughts and your work are good. If you recall what we discussed yesterday, similarly today we would like to understand what we should do within ourselves. Whatever we do with our open eyes, looking far at all other creatures—and of course, at humans—we are doing Seva. Seva means we are helping. And helping, it is said, is better than doing nothing. When we wake up early in the morning, as I said, first we arise from the bed where we slept. As we open our eyes, we are again in the outer world. In sleeping, we were within ourselves. At that time, our inner self is with all of us. Our whole being is with us, filled with very, very divine feelings. And then comes what we call a dream, and the sleeping—this Nidrā. We are not going to do nothing, but we are aware of our inner self. That is, we can say, if we understand and we are aware, then our sādhanā is very important, very beautiful, and powerful. It is what we call our sleeping. And if we can perceive this, then our sādhana becomes very strong, very fulfilled, and we arrive at knowing how to sleep. So that at night, when we sleep, we become for our Self. Our Self means our Ātmā. This is a very important thing. Do not think we are only sleeping. God has given this and determined how long we should sleep, and that is very important. First, we are Jāgrat. Jagrat means awake. Now we are all here sitting, learning, looking, feeling, etc. We can see everything, and we are learning different visions. Everything we are doing is for others, so this is Jagrat. From sunrise to sunset, we are Jagrat, and for that, God has given the light. What is it for humans? I am telling you, and some animals also, many birds, they all are sleeping. Why? They are going to their inner self. Even the birds and animals are also dreaming. Sometimes, even the birds are bawling, speaking. So the Jagrat is our activities for the outer world, and we are using all our energy and everything. This is whatever we see now: we were cooking, we are eating, we are drinking, we are shopping—anything we are doing. This is from outside to inside. Then, what we call Suṣupta, deep sleep. What this sleep means is that we are 100% aware about our Self, and so it is very comfortable, relaxed, and peaceful. That is your life. That is for us. And after that is called Svapna. That is a dream. This dream also means that there are certain things which are in ourselves, and there come good and bad dreams. One is very full of fear. So there are many of these things. Between them, it is again one activity, and that is all the time; it is called being alert. In a dream, we are going, but we are very alert. We need something. So when something happens, we give up everything and we are again aware in our body, and that is then awakening. It means we become again alert about the outside. This is very beautiful and very good to understand for ourselves. So our inner self, our inner self, our God—all of our each and every instrument in the body, everything is coming in comfortable and good inside. Therefore, sleeping is very important. Then, of course, there is another higher level, and that is called the higher level of sleeping: Yoga Nidrā, which Mahāprabhujī has written about beautifully because Mahāprabhujī knew what that sleeping means. This is really the real Yoga Nidrā, which is in that Gurujī has written: Yogī Janakī, yoga nidrā. Yogī Janakī, yoga nidrā. Then those who are practicing yoga, they are the Yogīs. And the Yogīs are also sleeping; it is not that they are only awakened. But it is said that the Yogīs, in the dark night, they are jāgṛt ho jā—at that time they are awakened then. It is another sleep, and in that is the consciousness towards the Supreme, the highest, the Cosmic. Mahāprabhujī has written about this and given us more, which we will continue tomorrow. Now it is the time for prayer. Please, Sandhyā—you know what is Sandhyā? Sandhyā means connection. What does this connection mean? It is between day and night. The sun is going down and night comes. So this is together, night and day; that is very important.
