The Divine Union of Śiva and Śakti

A spiritual discourse on the divine principles of Śiva and Śakti during Navarātri.

"This technology is very great. We are very thankful to all scientists and people who are doing such work. I am able to talk to everyone in the world."

"In our scriptures, books, and Vedas, the ṛṣis of that time traveled through the whole space. In that time, those ṛṣis went through their meditation, through the techniques of the yogīs."

Swami Madhavanandji, connecting with a global audience via technology, expounds on the cosmic origins of Śiva and Śakti. He narrates how the five elements emerged from endless space, leading to the first principle, Śiva, and his dynamic energy, Śakti. The discourse includes the story of how the sage Nārada prompted Pārvatī to ask Śiva about his garland of skulls, leading to the tale of Satī's self-immolation, the creation of the 52 Śakti Pīṭhas, and a subsequent story where a parrot overhears a secret Śiva intended only for Pārvatī. He emphasizes that these divine, interdependent energies exist within all beings and creation.

Hari Om! All dear brothers and sisters, all yoga practitioners and masters, I am so happy that through this technology we are together in this program. It does not matter where we are. During this Navarātri, messages are coming from Fiji, near New Zealand, in the middle of the ocean. Devotees there, their children are always asking, "When will Swāmījī begin satsaṅg programs?" This technology is very great. We are very thankful to all scientists and people who are doing such work. I am able to talk to everyone in the world, even those in Fiji. I have students whose children still ask, "When will Swamiji come?" I am very grateful to the leaders who found such technology, because of which we can communicate. It is everywhere there are humans. Everywhere there is technology, and now the whole world has become just in one hand. Once, a person said to his son going to school, "Don’t worry if you don’t know; all is in your hand," meaning in our telephone. We are there everywhere, and not only on Earth. Humans, the scientists, have been to many other planets. In our scriptures, books, and Vedas, the ṛṣis of that time traveled through the whole space. In that time, those ṛṣis went through their meditation, through the techniques of the yogīs, and still they are. The difference is this: they give to their disciples, and the masters of the yogīs know what to do and how to do, because otherwise it will be used in the wrong way. In this time, they can do everything for everyone, all together. Therefore, in some way, it is very good for us. Now, we are sitting here. I am in the Czech Republic, and all are listening in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji—everywhere. This is very good, though some use it for things not good. We cannot compare with those ṛṣis. In this technology, we can destroy many things, but those great saints and ṛṣis, what we saw of God, they will not defect anything. My dear, every evening at this time, for nearly five months, people have been coming close to me in our ashram for Mahāprabhujī’s deep satsaṅg. Thousands upon thousands of people go through it. Over so many years, millions have gone through. This center here has been made by our dear Sādhvī or Swamī, who is Pārvatī. What is the name of Pārvatī? Parvatī is, we know, a part of Śiva. "Parvat" also means high mountains; it means the highest. Bhagavān Śiva is the first one. Śiva himself has manifested through all five elements. It is said that Śiva is all five elements. Everything that we are managing comes not immediately, but from the difference. We cannot just say the child has come from the mother’s womb; the mother knows, the father knows. It is about how the prāṇa, energies, etc., come together. In the same way, of course, the first is space. And what is space? We don’t know. We are not in space, or we are in space, but where is space? We can’t touch it. But God is anant. Anant means endless. It is the endless. We cannot touch or see it. Within that, there is also space, energy, wind. It is not that we think wind is only here on Earth. Go further and further, and you will see you can’t imagine how strong the wind is there in the whole space and air. But that cannot move there, and therefore the fire. It is the fire, the heat, moving the air. Each other there is what we call water, but not like we have here; it is different prāṇas, so that we can see even the prāṇa. But that prāṇa is also invisible. Then something comes together, and that we call our Earth, or many stars. It is not only like this Earth. Everything is there from this space. Everything is that which we call this Earth. But Earth is also just like tiny things. It’s an old universe. Therefore, it is said—from that which I always came to tell—I talk about many things. The first is space, and in this space there are three principles. From there comes Śiva. So from our meditations and our ṛṣis, they all came up from this. And so comes Śiva. Śiva has many names, thousands. Śiva has already created or come into his bodies, so they became two: Śiva and Śakti. Śiva is that everything, and Śakti is then coming together. What means "come together"? All is space, all elements, everything coming, the whole divine five things. And so Śiva just came and meditated. We know that it is long, long years, times. That time was nothing like this. So Śiva sat there. He came and meditated for ages and ages. It’s not like we see Śiva as he is depicted—with nice cloth, and Pārvatī with a good dress. This is after we men are thinking. They created Śiva, and what they call then in the caves, on the rocks, etc., they come and sit on that. So it is said that through these Śiva’s movements, that was what we call the āsanas, how he moved into the bodies. This is what we call the yoga that is created by Śiva. It is written about yoga, and there are about 85 postures. These are the main yoga postures. After that, of course, we are doing day by day more postures and movements—many, many things. We all humans, now on these days, are very high, very far. So it was a movement, was it? And get inside that energy and keep that Śiva, or itself Śiva, movements; otherwise it will become like a stone. So it is said, what will happen? What is coming? Then comes the Śakti, like we call a woman, let’s say. This is the female and the male, and these are in that power, in everything, everywhere. Even this plant has both energies inside. This male and female that it has, it’s holding as a mother, and the power inside also, what we call the seed. So everything, everything that is on our earth is divided into two principles. And so it comes together from itself. And so, the Śiva. We are all, in our body, we have the Śiva. And we have the Śakti in our body too. We cannot say, "I am only the man." You are, but inside the Śakti is sitting. Then the ṛṣis came further. So they said, "What? I am coming? How will I come?" etc. So it is the power; the energy in the male inside is the female’s, and the female’s into the male. But in that way, then, both powers slowly, slowly, little by little, disappear. That power comes together, but it will go. And so we are here, living how many years? Also the animals, not only the humans. And so, how is that power we are holding or not? If they keep the power, the female’s power, if you keep it, then the Śiva-prāṇa, energy, will become very strong. Very, very strong. That’s why some ṛṣis, or other yogīs, etc., say they don’t want to marry. They give this energy within themselves. But she is with us, and now it means not that physical body. That is after, but that’s why the sādhanā and yogic techniques are how they take the energy up. Others, all animals, or the humans, or the trees, water, fire—all have the power inside. That inner side power is that Śakti. But if the Śakti will not keep the principle that she will be there only because it’s Śiva, hold it, then it will be with you; otherwise that will also be gone. That is what we call Śiva-Śakti, and we are talking some worldly world. So we can say this is a woman and this is a man. But male and female, they are separate? No, they are not separate. Because more power in the female is more power in the male. And in the male, more power is in the female. That’s why they are coming together. It has to come. But in that time, it means in our life, we slowly, slowly are deleting. And then again, gone. But energy will come together. And therefore, it is Śiva. In the very beginning, first was Śiva, which is what we call the Śakti. Śakti means power. Their name is also, they call the Śakti. But, my dear, not only the female, but the men also. You know, many men are doing bodybuilding. It’s a lot of hard work, strong working. What is that? Their energy. Everyone will say, "Oh, he is very strong." So when we call him strong, he is a man, but with him, the man, it is the Śakti. And when the Śakti, for example, that you are ill a little bit, something, and you are sleeping only. You have a fever or something, and we are sleeping. We can’t get up. Why? Śakti. The Śakti has gone. The Śakti is down. Śakti didn’t want, etc. Then what did we see? We give good medicine. That time was Ayurveda, and this power is in each other. We cannot get the power. We are getting power from the Śakti, and Śakti is getting it from the men. But there is something, how they are separating. And so we give good food, milk. When you are tired and you do not know if you have no food or something good, take the milk of the mother—cows, sheep, buffaloes, etc. These mothers give us, and so that Śiva, it is he who is holding. And holding again is a Śakti, and therefore it was coming, Pārvatī. Yes, but Pārvatī is not the second. Śiva was more, further, more, more. So Pārvatī at the Himālaya and Śiva in beautiful rock caves—there is a miracle of the Śiva ages and ages. Pārvatī, don’t know how long it is. So one day, Śiva and Pārvatī sitting in the Himālaya, they stayed there. Sometimes Śiva alone himself went for a walking. How far? Kilometers and comes again, sometimes together walking. So one day, Śiva was at a far distance, and Nārada Ṛṣi comes. You will see Nārada in our Rāmāyaṇa. Nārada cannot stay long. He cannot stay only a few minutes. Then he has to go home. So Bhagavān Śiva, somewhere Pārvatī is sitting on the rock, very nicely, very good air. And Nārada comes. Nārada comes and Mother Pārvatī, "Mātā Pārvatī, praṇām, praṇām, Mother, praṇām." And Pārvatī said, "Nārada, very nice that you come. I am very happy. And what do you want? What can I do for you?" He said, "No, no, Mother, you are the Divine Mother. I knew nothing, I just came to have your praṇām and get your blessing, Mother." And he said, "Where is Bhagavān Śiva?" She said, "Śiva went for a walk." "I see, Mother, can you tell me? That Śiva has a big mālā, but in the mālā is from the skull of all humans. Humans, so there inside the head. Why is it? Why does Śiva take it in his neck?" She said, "I don’t know." "Then you must tell Śiva. Mother Parvati, you don’t know what can happen. But mother, I don’t know. Tell Śiva. He will give the answer. Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ... Namaḥ Śivāya, Har Har Bholi, Namaḥ Śivāya." And Nārada goes, "Har Har Viṣṇu Bhagavān." After a few times, half an hour or something, Bhagavān Śiva from the Himalayas is coming. He has in his neck the snakes, this and that. And Nārada said, "Why is the snake round? What poison is there? But I don’t know, Mother Pārvatī, don’t tell me, please. But I would also know why Bhagavān Śiva has this." All Śiva comes, Pārvatī says, "My Lord, I am your waiting. You were very long somewhere." He said, "I was walking very nice in the Himalayas, very nice air, etc." But Pārvatī said, "Bhagavān Śiva, why have you in your neck a mālā from the skull of the head of the human?" Śiva said, "This is okay, don’t worry, it’s okay. Why do you want?" "No, but I want to know." Bhagavān Śiva said, "I think Nārada was here." She said, "Yes, my Lord." "Nārada was there. Oh Parvati, Nārada is coming many times and making many things. It’s okay, don’t worry." "No, no, what I want to know is, how many heads? And you don’t take it out. You are protecting it very much, and it doesn’t let you go because the nāga, the snake, he will not let any come near. But tell me," she said. "I will tell you sometimes." She said, "Please, why don’t you tell me some things? We are both together, one." "I think, Parvati, you will be a little bit sad, or you will be not so happy. Let’s talk about something different. We can have some milk or something, eating or something, fruits." She said, "Bhagavān Śiva, why are you turning this side and that side and that side?" He said, "This is not for you. I know my God, but I want to know because I am yours." He said, "Well, this is only four because there are two powers. One is that who is going like Śakti and Śiva in oneness, and others, they are just getting away and gone. Not only separating, but they are falling into the narakas. So I am holding." "What are you holding?" Śiva said, "Pārvatī, if I tell you, then what will you say?" "I will say females are there." So Bhagavān Śiva said, "Pārvatī, all śaktis of Śiva from ages to ages, there was the Śakti, and Śakti died. But I got, I know that my Śakti died. And not that she died because something was wrong. They made a mistake. I told Śakti and Śakti’s father, and there was Mary’s some yajña, but her father, he did not give the invitation for that yajña. So Śiva said, 'No, okay, no problem.' But the Śakti came to know. Śakti said, 'Why did my Śiva, my Lord, not give the invitation?' Well, if he did not answer, that doesn’t matter. She said, 'No. No, why did my father not give the invitation to my Bhagavān Śiva?' And like this, so she went. She went there to tell her father, 'Why did you not give Śiva the invitation?' Bhagavān Śiva said, 'Pārvatī, don’t go into certain things. It is something. Does it matter?' She said, 'No, it is an immolation to you, my Lord.' And so Pārvatī went there, and, you know, further I don’t want to talk so long. And she was very angry, and her father, mother, and all, they didn’t want that. That’s it. They want to bring Śiva here, and she sat near the Yajña Śālā, and she said, 'If you will not give the invitation to Śiva... I will die here. I will burn in this fire,' and she fell into this yajña. She died, burnt." So many bhaktas of Śiva, they were with the Śakti, and they came back all very sad. And they said, "What happened?" That Śakti died. Śiva woke up, and all rocks, the Himalaya was trembling. Well, what we call this moment in the ocean. Śiva was very angry, and he was sad. Śiva, Dejavān, he was very angry at that time. But then Śiva took only his tilak or triśūla, and he took the Śakti on his shoulder, and he snogged Nandi all behind, and he goes to the universe somewhere. Ages and ages without Śiva, what will happen? And so many ṛṣis, and Viṣṇu and Brahmā, they were praying. They are all praying, but Śiva, don’t know where Śiva-Śakti is, not anymore. Brahmā said, "I will have difficulty to again create like this, you know? If that is gone, then we are all gone. Then everywhere will be no dark. Everything lost, all creatures finished." So they say to Bhagavān Viṣṇu, "Please do something." And then Bhagavān Viṣṇu, triśūla, cakra, and that Sudarśana cakra, and Viṣṇu sent the Sudarśana cakra into the space, and 52 pieces of the śakti were cut in the Śiva. And that 52 Śaktis, part of the body with the Sudarśana cakra, fell on the earth in the Himalayas in many, many places. And there is the Śakti is all that we are doing, like Navarātri, etc. So there are 52 places in the holy places of the Śakti. And when we make anywhere a temple or something like Śaktis, we are worshipping that. With the very power, one should never, never, never do something wrong with that. And Śakti is that after what happens in the world down, and that she is protecting everything, and all negatives she is destroying, the Śakti. But the śakti is that, it has to be that śakti, and when the śakti is going somewhere else, then it becomes a powder. Then again, Bhagavān Śiva comes. And then the long stories, so there is the Gaṅgā. And Parvati, and that both are great powers on the earth now, still. So Śiva said, "Parvati, don’t ask me this." She said, "No, I want it." Śiva will not say from his mouth. Someone would have said, but Śiva did not say. Because Śiva did not want to think, even if that. He would not have. He did not say, "If, like this, something is happening, I will have one pearl more in my mālā, Pārvatī." She said, "No and no. I will not be in the mala. I am, and you." So, it’s not that your body. It’s your energy, your power, Mother. Not physical. Here is not physical, no you and me. And so Bhagavān Śiva said, "Parvati, what I want to tell you is not so easy. Therefore, I will see where I can tell you." "Why not? You can tell me now." She said, "Śakti, you are telling too quickly, women." Bhagavān Śiva said, "I will find a place where there are no living creatures, where there will be only snow and glaciers." And so Śiva came to one cave. And that cave is a very powerful spiritual place, and many people, when the snow is gone, go for the darśan of that holy person. Our holy place is very great. What a name! So Śiva and Pārvatī are going. There was a very big lake, and on that lake, Śiva told his snakes, "You can be here." Was very nice taal, it means land where one can eat grass. So Nandi said, Śiva said, "Nandi, here you should graze." So he put a snake there, Nandi there, everything. And Śiva and Parvati came to that cave, beautiful, very cold in the winter, all with the, what you call, snow. And Śiva was moving and looking, "Is there anyone here?" Then Śiva said, "It was this time after sunset." Bhagavān Śiva said to Pārvatī, "Pārvatī, I will tell you the whole story. I will go now into my samādhi. And I will tell you, but you should always say yes. How many miles? Yes, yes, yes. If you sleep, you are sleeping, then your knowledge or your wish will not be. So don’t sleep." So she said, "How?" He said, "I will speak and you will say, 'Yes, yes, yes,' like this." About midnight, Pārvatījī became tired and she leaned on Śiva. There is nothing saying yes. There was one parrot that was there, very cold, and he was there. And he learned, he saw Pārvatī and Śiva. And he knows this is giving this knowledge. So Pārvatī slept, and the parrot said, "Aha, aha..." and Śiva was talking further. Early morning, sun rising time. One time, Bhagavān Śiva woke up from his meditation and this knowledge, and then he said, "Pārvatī, you are sleeping." She said, "No. You said, 'I was hearing.'" She said, "My lord, I slept." "No." Then the parrot said, and he went flying away. What happens? So that he flies, and Śiva got up without shoes, without anything, on his threshold, and ran behind to kill that parrot here, there, here. The parrot was so tired. It was winter time, so about four o’clock or something like that, and there was one lady, and she was so tired because her husband, the ṛṣi, who made the Vedas. She said, "Oh!" She opened her mouth, and the parrot flew into the mouth and stomach of that woman. And Śiva is cunning, like he was angry or not angry, tired. And he said, "Where is that?" "It’s in my stomach." And he wanted to send a triśūla, and the ṛṣi comes. "Please, please, please. Hey Śiva Bhagavān, hey Śiva Bhagavān. Don’t do this." Śiva said, "OK." Śiva went, and Pārvatī could not tell what Śiva said. So that was the Vedavyāsī. So Vedavyāsī, who was near Badrināth and Alakāpurījī, gave. There he was writing the Vedas for more than 5,000 years—500,000. That’s it. So Pārvatī lost it. And Śiva came back. "I told you, my darling, 'Do not hurry,' but you did not follow me. So, is that mala? It is in the mala of Śiva. 108, and in one is that Śiva itself." So that’s how it is. Well, I don’t know what I’m telling. I’m only telling what books say, many great ṛṣis, great saints, they are giving these stories, and it is the truth. Otherwise, that will be gone. So therefore, that power, the śakti, now in the śakti it means, doesn’t matter if you are a woman or a man, both are in one. So what this śakti have in pieces, but Pārvatī, now she is lost. But still she is with Śiva. Therefore, our prāṇa, the energy of our body, is that śakti, and prāṇa inside is our body. We are living, and from this movement of these yoga exercises, what we call the postures, therefore, come and know, so it is said.
