Mantra and Guru

The human path requires a clear spiritual practice and a single, true guru. All beings share this human life, yet many have lost the heart's connection through worldly confusion. The morning routine is essential: awaken before sunrise in Brahmamuhurta, wash with water, and bring light into your space with a lamp and pure sound. This practice purifies the day. Your spiritual guru is one, just as a child has one mother and father. Do not change gurus or jump between paths, as this creates confusion. The guru gives the seed of knowledge directly to the soul. Attend other gatherings for learning, but your primary allegiance remains to your one guru. The wealth from a guru is inner knowledge, which cannot be stolen. Surrender body, mind, and this inner wealth in service.

"From the morning when we wake up until the evening when we go to sleep... there is something within our body, in our brain, in our inner thoughts."

"Do not change your gurus. If you change, you will not achieve anything. The guru is one."

Oṁ śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ. Oṁ Śo’haṁ Saguṇa Brahma, Śrīdīp Paripūrṇa Nārāyaṇa Namaḥ. Oṁ Śoham Saguṇ Brahma Śrīdīp Paripūraṇ Nārāyaṇ Nāma. Alak Purī Jī Mahādev Kī Jai, Devādhi Dev Deveśvar Mahādev Kī Jai. Satguru Svāmī Madhvanājī Bhagavān Kī Jai. Ārādhi Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī Kī Jai. Satsaṅg Nāthaṁ Dharma Kī Jai. Good evening, my dear all. Sisters, brothers, to all Yoga in Daily Life across the whole world. There are many different kinds of yoga, many good teachers or gurus, beautiful āśrams, and also the many religions where people do great things, whether they meditate or pray. And to those who cannot yet find their path, wondering which religion to follow or wanting none at all—to all who are doing and to all who are not—you are all my sisters and mothers among all humans. I offer praṇām to you all. It is said that when we receive this human birth, whether we are born as sisters or brothers, all is one. What does "one" mean? Human. Not countries, colors, or languages. We are human. And we know there are many other creatures on this earth that God has created. Everything begins from Śiva, Bhagavān Śiva. From Him comes Viṣṇu, and also Brahmā; He is Śiva. We should understand according to our own culture and religion, but we know what a human is. I adore all humans with full-hearted hands, especially nowadays. In this time, many people are returning to their gods or religion. Many come to our yoga centers, drawn to yoga, and they ask, "Please give us something. What should we do as a human?" In every religion, there was once a very pure and good essence. But now, in these times, humans have gone after money, learned so many things, and become confused. Of course, we are learning and practicing; many sciences are great, but we have lost the connection from our heart. Therefore, it is said: from the morning when we wake up until the evening when we go to sleep, and from deep sleep at night until we wake early in the morning, there is something within our body, in our brain, in our inner thoughts. We are trying to do something good. Sometimes people have problems, they cannot sleep, or they have bad dreams. But animals also dream—horses, cows, buffaloes, lions, tigers, dogs, and different birds. At night, they sleep but make sounds. This is all part of it: light and dark, sun and moon. We are all there. I tell you this whether you like it or not. If you accept it, it is yours; if you do not, it is also yours. As humans, it is said we should wake up early in the morning, before sunrise. The whole night, one has duties and then goes to sleep. This is the difference. Early morning is called Brahmamuhūrta. This is the time when we cannot yet see the sun, but we see the light. It is said that one of the best nectars is in that time. So we get up, and it is best to wash our body. Not because you are dirty, but because while sleeping, many silent processes occur in the body. We must awaken all that is within. Water is pure and good; we should wash our body thoroughly. When we come out, many people wash every day in a river or a pond. Unfortunately, now there are too many chemicals, so we are afraid of some waters. But water is the seed. Jal, jaha, jagadīśa. Jal means water. Where there is water, there is life. In other countries, they say, "Voda a život"—water is life. In every language, they speak of it as life. First is the oxygen breath, then water, then our practice. Before sunrise, people begin their prayers. At that time, we should light a dīpak because the sun has not yet risen. We bring this light into our room, our house, our altars. This light is God; that light is the Light. Many people ring a bell, awakening everyone in the house or temple. We awaken a sound in our ears. When we hear this kind of sound, it is very positive, pure, spiritual, clean, full of happiness and joy. This is awakening. Many people perform pūjā and offer a fragrance, like agarbattī. But often, we do not know what is inside the stick. Of course, everyone intends good, but there are different kinds of fragrances. Some like a smell, others do not. In a yoga class with 100, 500, or 1000 people, many do not like heavy smells. They are good people; they do not say anything, but they stop coming to practice. If asked why, they say, "It's okay, I didn't have time," but not that the smell was unpleasant. Some people use a lot of smoke or alcohols and like the smell, but others do not; some get headaches. We should know what pure thing to use. When you go to a church or other places, Muslims also do this. In nature, there is gum from trees. Likewise, many things awaken us from sleep. Morning pūjā means the whole day your path will be pure and clean. So, water—we get up, we open our eyes. I always say, "I am a human, Mother Earth, may I step on you?" And water—voda je život—and good prāṇa, breath, and then movement. We can call it exercises, or going to the kitchen, working, etc. Even animals do this very well. Birds sing; all animals wake up and move their ears. We should be more than that. Now, what is your mantra? You must have a Guru Mantra. Let me explain about the mantra. For example, you have one child. This child has one mother. The child is from the mother, and the mother knows this is my child. It is true we can say others are good; we can say to other girls, "You are like my mother," or "You are a good child." But the mother is the mother; the child is that mother's. There are different kinds of mantra. The first mantra is the mother. She feels the mother's look on her face, gives milk—she does everything. Of course, someone may help the mother give birth, but it is the one. From our body comes a human—how nice! Animals too. So, "Mātṛdevo bhava." First, God is the mother. "Pitṛdevo bhavaḥ," the father. We can tell everybody, "Yes, my child," but it is the father of this child, the mother of this child. Then there is God, and all our friends. After that comes the second guru, the third guru. The first is mother, then father, then friends, all children, and so on. The third guru is the teacher. Whatever they teach us, that is our teacher. You write the teacher; we say guru. This is your teacher, your guru. After that comes the guru who performs ceremonies. When a child is born, they perform a ceremony. After one week, at the first sunrise from the new moon, these are all ceremonies. Then, after that, comes the spiritual guru. You might say, "My teacher from first class, second class, primary school, middle school, high school, college, university." We have so many teachers, and we should respect them. From the teacher's mouth, the voice comes and goes into our ears; it will remain our whole life. What your master taught you, what he or she wrote on the blackboard, the letters, the pictures—from primary school to university, and further to becoming a doctor, professor, or scientist. This is what they put into our ears and eyes. From their voice, what enters our ears later comes from our own mouth. That is our gurus. Then there is the spiritual guru. The spiritual guru is also only one. Do not change your gurus. If you change, you will not achieve anything. The guru is one. Perhaps your guru does not go about giving lectures or reading books. In the guru's heart, there is a seed. In the father's body is the father's seed, which comes to our navel. That is what we said: Viṣṇu; the seed given by Śiva inside. But the Guru gives to our soul, to our Ātmā. In the Ātmā, that is the Guru. When you receive a mantra from someone, a real Guru—otherwise there are many—it is said that if someone tells you, "I will give you Guru Mantra, you should come to me, be my disciple, I will teach you," then this guru is not good. The best guru is one who will wait. He will tell the person exactly what you need. If you already have another guru, it means you are already born. You cannot put your child back into the mother's body again. So, wherever you are, you received that mantra from your guru, your spiritual guru. They said, "I am spiritual." In this life, it is what it is. We should not ask for another new guru. Yes, you can say you are a child; you can say it otherwise, as my mother, or like my father if adopted. It is okay, but the quality, the nature, everything is from that father and that mother. So we tell everyone: please, do you know what a guru means? Do you have another guru? Then continue on that path. There are two things: your guru gave you only the mantra and nothing else. Okay, it is very good. But you can go to other gurus' satsaṅg. That is very, very good. From other gurus, you can gain knowledge, but your first guru is the one you received. So we can go there, but do not go to this guru and that guru, this lecture and that. Some people say, "Yes, it doesn't matter if you have a guru, but I am the best. I give you these techniques," making many lectures or jokes. Then you are lost. Knowledge is knowledge. That is Vidyā. Do you know Vidyā? Vidyā is Sarasvatī. Sarasvatī means knowledge; whatever you are learning is Sarasvatī. Brahmā gave this knowledge as Sarasvatī. Wherever you are—with your guru, in class, at university—always, there was a prayer before you came to class, yoga class, or school. They all come into the hall and pray together. That knowledge, that teaching, is Sarasvatī. Unfortunately, this knowledge was lost because parents, teachers, and governments left it out. Another thing I am telling you: in the morning, wake up and follow this routine until evening. Also, when we go to sleep, we should say one mantra, one prayer. When I came to Europe about fifty-one or fifty-two years ago, in the beginning, most people said prayers before eating and when going to sleep. Why is it now lost? Not for all, but for many. All spiritual people, from the church or everywhere, they pray. Those who pray like this are balancing spirituality within the human being, and for animals too. There are always many things to make prayers. We will look at a prayer I tell you every day, which you can learn. You all know this prayer but may not know its meaning. So I will show you: Gurudeva, Devī, Devatā, Sabhā, Guru Mūrti Dhārī, Swāmī, Guru Mūrti Dhārī kehrayā, Veda Purāṇa kehrayā, Veda Purāṇa, Guru Maimā Bhārī, Hari Om, Jaya Jaya... Gurudev, yagya aur dāna, havan, tap, bhaubhati kī na, Swami bhaubhati kī na, bina guru gyānan hove, bina Prabhu gyānan. Hari Om, Jai Jai... Gurudev, mohā māyā sansār baḍā hai, bhav sāgar baṛī, Swami, bhav sāgar baṛī. Satsaṅg jaja chālākar, satsaṅg jaja chālākar, guru pālame tyāre. Hari Om, jaya jaya... Gurudev. I have translated this, and it continues. Na Na Pant Chali Kali Yugme, Roop Visar Jave, Swami Roop Visar Jave, sabhako guru samajavat, sabhako prabhuji. Hari Om, Jaya Jaya... Gurudev. Nanapant chale, Kali Yuga me roop vichar jave. So, Nana-pant: nana means "this and that"; pant is the path. You go one time this way, another time that way. Nāna-paṇṭha-cāli: they are walking on that path, this and that. In this Kali-yuga, people are jumping here and there. Rūpa-bhiccharjāvi: what you have made, you created something. When you go here and there, you have broken everything. Some go to a guru, some go to a caste. But Gurudev will give again the real knowledge. That is it. So Gurudev teaches everything. There are two kinds of teaching. One is all that we teach from school to university. All scientists are very great; there is nothing wrong. Second, it is said: "Sabko guru samjāye, ātmā batālawe." So Gurudev will show us the ātmā. That is jīvātmā, ātmā, paramātmā. Gurudev gives us knowledge only about the ātmā. Hari Om, Jaya Jaya... Gurudev. So, Nānāpant—different paths in this Kali Yuga. Vichārajāve: that is why people are confused. But sabko gurusamjāve: Gurudev will give everyone knowledge about that ātmā. Hari Om, Jai Jai, Jai Gurudev—victory, victory, victory of Gurudev. Tan, man, dhana, arpaṇ kar. Tan means body. With our body, we should work, practice, and also do the seva of Gurudev. Man: in your mind, not only outside. With a pure mind, we should do what Gurudev teaches. Dhan: properties, but not only gold and money. What we have learned is our treasure. It is said: if you have money or gold in your hand, someone can take it and run away; it is lost. But what Gurudev has given in the brain, no one can take out. It will always be within us. So that is the dhan from Gurudev, not money. Arpan karu: I surrender to you. Gurudev sevapau: I am doing the seva of Gurudev. It means the knowledge, the practice he gives me; I should practice further. Heart, Jod, Ardh, Karun: folded hands. My hands are joined. Ardh, I am asking you, please. When you ask anyone for directions or help, you ask. So hat jod arj kuru: with hands joined, I ask you. At my Gurudev's feet, at God's feet, I bow my head down. We all say, "Yes, Hari Om." In many countries here, it is different. But in India and other countries, even on aeroplanes, when people enter, they stand and bow. When a flight attendant welcomes you, she also bows. Tan man dan yar pan kar, guru sevā pāvu, hat joḍ arj karu, charno me śiṣ nvau. We say, "Sir." So "Sir" and "Sir" are both. Hari Om, Jaya Jaya... Guru Dev, then: Śrī Dev Purīṣa Paripūraṇa Ānanda. Śrī Dev Purījī, our Bhagavān Dev Purījī. Paripūrṇa is complete, heavy, all; he is all in all. Ānanda darśave: he shows us ānanda, bliss. Śrī Dev Puruṣa Paripūrṇa Ānanda Darśave. Svāmī Ānanda Darśave Śrī Svāmī Dīpa Tana Mana Se. Śrī Svāmī Dīpa Tana Mana Se Guru Āratī Gāve. So Mahāprabhujī said, "Svāmī Dīpa, Mahāprabhujī, from his body and mind, I pray to O Guru Dev." This first part, Āratī, is what we sing in the morning, evening, or any time. Jaya Jaya... J Veda Purāṇa Guru Mahī Madharī. Hari Om Jaya Jaya... bahu bhati ki na, Swami, bahu bhati ki na. Bina guru gyanan hove, bina Prabhu gyanan. Prabhu means God. Guru Palame Tari Hari Om Jaya Jaya... Gurudev. Na Na Pant Chale, Kali Yuga Me Roop Bishar Jave, Swami Roop Bishar Jave, Sab Ko Guru Samjave, Sab Ko Guru Samjave, Ātmā Batalave. Hari Om Jaya Jaya... Gurudev, tan, man, dhan arpaṇ kar. Guru sevā pāvu, Swāmī, Guru sevā pāvu. Hāth joṛ yācñā karu, hāth joṛ yācñā karu, caraṇam śir nivāu. Hari om, jaya jaya, jaya Gurudev. Śrī Dev Purīṣa Paripūrṇa Ānanda Darśave. Svāmī Ānanda Darśave Śrī Svāmī Dīpa Tana Manase. Śrī Svāmī Dīpa Dayālu Tana Manase Guru Āratī Gāve. Hari Om Jaya Jaya... Gurudev. Oṁ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ... Alakpuri Jī Mahādev Kī Devadhī Dev Deveśwar Mahādev Kī. Haradhe Bhagavān Śrī Deep Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhū Jī Kī. Satguru Swāmī Madhavān Jī Bhagavān Kī. Satyasanātan Dharma Kī. Oṁ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Viśvakuru Mahāmaṇḍelā Īśwar Paramahaṃśī Swāmī Maheśwarānanda Jīguru Devakī Jai. And tomorrow we will continue.
