The Practice and Significance of Brahmari Prānāyāma

A guided yoga session teaching the practice and benefits of Brahmari Prānāyāma.

"Within prāṇāyāma, we have the technique of Brahmari prānāyāma."

"Concentrate not only on what you hear from the ears, but also on which part of your head the vibration is going."

The lecturer leads a global audience through specific techniques for Brahmari, or humming bee breath. He details finger placements for the ears and temples, emphasizes sitting straight in postures like Vajrāsana, and instructs practitioners to focus on the internal sound and vibration originating from the navel. The teaching includes practical advice, the importance of balanced practice, and relates the practice to energy channels (Ida, Piṅgalā, Vajranāḍī), concluding with personal anecdotes about his Gurujī.

Satya Sanātana Dharma kī Alagpurī Jī Mahādev kī Jai. Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān kī Jai. Devādidev Deveśvar Mahādev kī Jai. Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān kī Jai. Holī Gurujī kī Jai. Good evening, my dear sisters and brothers, to all Yoga in Daily Life teachers and students around the whole world. Dobrý večer, všichni moji milí sestry a bratři, vy, kdo cvičíte jógu v denním životě na celém světě. I respect and offer Om Namo Nārāyaṇa to all others, yoga teachers, yoga schools, and yoga ashrams. We are all human. It does not matter which country, religion, or no religion; we are all one as humans. Všichni jsme v jednotě jako lidé. I give you all the blessings of my Gurujī. Dávám vám všechny požehnání svého Gurujī. Let us proceed further with our yoga practice. Postupme dál v našem cvičení yogī. What we are doing through yoga in our daily life is very good, given by God, and makes us very happy. That practice is prāṇāyāma. Within prāṇāyāma, we have the technique of Brahmari prānāyāma. A v rámci pránájámických technik se věnujeme technice Brahmari pránájámy. I have given you two techniques, and it is still the Brahma-Rī prāṇāyāma. First, we put our index fingers in our ears. Let me remind you of the two techniques: the lips are always closed, only the teeth are involved. In one, the teeth are closed together; in the second, the teeth are relaxed and open. The lips are always closed. We will practice once more so you understand better. We close our lips and hold our teeth a little bit inside, without releasing. We put the index fingers from both hands inside the ears, but do not press too strongly. If you have long nails, you should make the index finger a little bit less prominent. This is very important. With very long nails, even if cleaned well, there can be something behind them that could cause infections in the ears. So, primarily, lips closed and teeth joined. Do this three times and concentrate deeply on the sound. Concentrate not only on what you hear from the ears, but also on which part of your head the vibration is going. Mostly, the vibration travels within the head. Many people in the world experience different kinds of vibrations or sounds in the head, which only they can hear. Je to takový ten tinnitus, kdy slyšíte nějaké zvonění v uších, ale jenom vy to slyšíte, nikdo jiný. We shall observe from which direction this sound is going. After practicing three times, listen and notice how comfortable the sound now feels in the head. There are many medical techniques, operations, and things for such conditions, but Brahmrī Prāṇāyāma is very easy, very good, and truly relaxing. You can share these techniques with all your friends, anyone, from Yoga in Daily Life via Swamiji Television. Practice like this three times. Please, wherever you are in the world, including here in Europe and the Czech Republic, listen, do it with me, and try to hear the vibration and which part it is affecting more. It goes through the whole head, very finely, through different parts of the brain. So, three times, all my dears around the world: put your fingers in your ears. Your shoulders should be in one line. Do this only three times with your teeth closed. One more thing: we should sit straight, in Vajrā Āsana. There is Vajrā Nāḍī. From the navel, you will hear, feel, and listen to the vibration. Therefore, we should sit straight. Ida and Piṅgalā penetrate through the whole spine. A proto je zapotřebí, abyste u toho seděli vzpřímeně a vnímali, jak se proplétá Ida a Piṅgalā podél páteře. Who does not have the book Yoga v dnešním člověku and Skryté síly v člověku, čakry a kundalíní? I am not making business, but these two Yoga in Daily Life books are very, very good. Every yoga student or teacher should have them. Of course, there are many yogīs with very nice and good books as well. Good yogīs and yoga centers work very hard and do very good work. We should learn from such yogīs and teachers, not from those who have trained for only a month or a year; that means nothing. From kindergarten until completing university, it is not a matter of one month or one year. Students know it is a step-by-step process. Similarly, yoga, a yoga teacher, yogī, or guru gives us this science and these techniques, and we should remain there and practice, practice, practice. Again, sit straight in Vajrāsana. Some people make other postures, but the spine must be straight. Elderly people or those who cannot sit on the floor can sit on a chair. Place a little pillow at the back of the chair so the spine is straight. If the posture is not correct, it will not be effective. You see, sometimes surgeons in hospitals perform big operations under narcosis; the person sleeps happily with no pain, and the doctors work nicely. In yoga, this has also been practiced for many, many years. I respect anyone who has learned something and is giving it forward, any techniques or science. But finally, it is God who will say to us, "Now you come back to us." This Vajrāsana, Vajranāḍī, is very, very powerful. Like a big tree that grows upward while its roots provide balance, so too is the Vajranāḍī. We will come back to Vajranāḍī in more detail so we understand it very well, but we have to learn. Many people now sit at a desk working on a computer, and many bend their backs. Some sit comfortably, but they must learn to bring the paper nearer and not hunch over. You can write like this. Slouching is very, very bad now. In Yoga in Daily Life and many other yogas, every half hour, take just one minute or less to stretch your hands like this, then straighten. That is very, very good. Then lean to the right side from the chair, reach for a pencil, and then the other side. You will be so relaxed. This is what we do in yoga in daily life. Do the exercises properly, not haphazardly. Go slowly and with control, then come back straight. So, like this. Brahmari is here in the ear and in the head, but it connects very much to the Vajranāḍī, and Vajranāḍī is connected very much to the navel. Because that is a seed, and the seed spreads out—one part goes up and the other goes down into Mother Earth. That seed is like a child. The roots are in the earth, and one day we will go again to the earth. So sit in Vajrāsana, Siddhāsana, or any other posture like Padmāsana, the lotus pose. The main thing is to sit straight. When you sit at a table or chair, your legs can be down, but your spine should be straight. Then the navel will be in order. When something is not in order, it goes to the mother, and the mother's side is our navel. Now, please sit straight and well. Close your teeth. Keep your lips closed. The sound comes from the navel. Do this three times. Today, concentrate on the sound, the vibration. On which side is it going? How is it? If you give feedback, I will be happy to understand, or I will be very happy to learn a new sound as well. If you do not feel good or are in pain, you can send a message to Swamiji Television, and they will relay it. This pranayama is very much needed. It does not create emotion, because pranayama is a very powerful sound and will not let energy go in other directions. So, only three times. If you see me on Swamiji Television or just listen to the sound, close your lips, bite gently, only three times. You should know it goes from the navel. Inhale and exhale; it goes from the stomach, the nābhi, the navel. Exhale out, deep inhale, very good. Bring your index fingers out and place your hands on your knees. I cannot ask you now how the sound was because you are sitting very far, but I have heard from myself, and I send that sound to you all. A ten můj zvuk sem posílal vám všem. Pokud nemáte vyvážené oba ty prsty, tak ten zvuk vnímáte na obou stranách. Jinak, pojďme si to zkusit ještě jednou nebo dvakrát. Keep the fingers a little bit loose, and the other fingers are good, or all are exactly balanced. So, only two more times. This is for everyone, my dears. If you do not need āsanas, do not worry. You should practice asanas as much as you can, otherwise you know there are sarvahitā āsanas. But this is a balance of sound. It is like in an airplane flying very high; the balance must be proper. The pilot and the co-pilot maintain it. When the pilot goes to the bathroom, he tells the co-pilot, "Don't change anything." If there is a slight issue, you can adjust. The pilot goes relaxed, wets his hands, and returns to his seat, while the flight remains balanced. Similarly, we have to understand this balance to get what we want from Brahmrī Prāṇāyāma. So, two times, please. First, make a little difference. Then, concentrate on achieving the exact same balance. First exactly, and the third time perhaps with a little less balance to one ear. Sit straight, good. Concentrate on the navel. Then inhale. You have learned very well. You know exactly what it is. Then many, many things in our body become very clear, good, and balanced. Automatically, many chakras will be balanced. Now, the second technique: again, our mouth should be relaxed, but lips closed. So one time the teeth are open slightly, but the lips are closed. You can do the first with proper balance. The second time, try to notice a little less professional sound on one side or the other. Observe the balancing. But do not bite your teeth. Lips closed. Both nostrils are open. Sit straight. Second time. Very good. We have to pull our awareness inside so we do not hear other sounds from the outside. A musíme mít ty uši tak dobře ucpané, abychom neslyšeli okolní zvuky. This is the primary prāṇāyāma. Čili toto je primary prāṇāyāma. Now, there is a third technique I want to give today. That is also very good. Now it involves two or three fingers. It depends; someone has thick fingers, someone has very nice, little fingers. Some, like children, have very nice little fingers. Here, you feel what they call the temple, and there are many nerves inside. This is very important and very, very good. Now, bite your teeth gently. Place these two or three fingers here and slowly bite your teeth. Yes, you will feel it there. These are the temples. Two fingers are enough. Then the thumbs have to go to the ears. So two fingers are enough, and we cover our ears with our fingers. These three or two fingers are on the temples. There also, you can close your teeth two times and open them two times, but lips should always be closed. Try, please, first. Now bite your teeth. Very good. Release your hands now. Notice how light your head feels, how relaxed you are with the nasal vibrations, and of course, in the whole brain. Then there is a fifth technique, which I wanted to tell you about tomorrow. There are also sub-techniques within this, which are the same techniques but we will continue further. It has an effect on all five elements: eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and skin. These are the five elements, the indriyāṇs, as we call them. We will continue with them. Similarly, yesterday I was speaking about prānāyāma and bhajans. Bhajans also have many differences, very vibrant sounds, and specific ways of singing. Now we can sing everything on our telephone and listen to any song or bhajan anytime. But all yogīs and good singers sing only at certain times when bhajans are meant to be sung: in the evening, before midnight, after midnight, about two hours before sunrise, and at sunrise. These are different melodies for singing our bhajans. All bhajans in our Gurujī's books, Mahāprabhujī's books, Lālā Nanjī's book, Brāhmaṇ Nanjī's book, all of our books, including Maṅgīlālji's book, exactly specify when and what kind of tune should be used. The old singers, gurus, sannyāsīs, or sādhus would say, "Please don't sing such bhajans in the daytime." After midnight, about one and a half hours past midnight, comes Satchisalaya, and that is called Saheliyān bhajan here. Sāhelīyaṁ Satyā. Here is Fakīrī too. The Fakiri was... "Saheliyan sute jā goye, Go Parvār. Saheliyan sute jā goye, Go Parvār. Oh, my Saheli." Saheli means our nerves, our body, and all our feelings. That nerve and all this is like a Sāhelī. Saheli means that all nerve systems and everything are feminine. This was for the awakening at sunrise. Therefore, it is said, "Sahelyā, suti jagoye, payo padhava. O Sahelyā, O my dears, wake up, now the sun will rise." So, all these bhajans of Holī Gurujīs in Mahāprabhujī, all our bhajans, specify when you should sing. But, of course, we here may not know, so they can sing anytime. In opera, singers know exactly what time and what is to be sung. Čili i to je věda. Celé naše tělo je Bůh. Je neuvěřitelné. O, můj mládí. Love your body. Care for your body. Never make your body angry, as many, many situations can happen. Then you have destroyed many, many cells in the body. Be healthy. Be good. This is Holy Gurujī's photo. I was very little there with Gurujī, and how nice Gurujī's voice was. Sometimes, very early in the morning, he would sing, and the sun would rise three hours later. Gurujī was in his room singing, and I was in another room. This was like a brahmari. When Gurujī started to sing, I got up. I was half sleeping and hearing Gurujī. It is said, "Sādho vai, O Sādhus, O my brother Sādhus, unbelievable." We are sitting on the chariot. I was sitting in my chariot, in which I have sat many times. A už sem v něm seděl mnohokrát. I cannot sing, you know. Guruji told me, "You sing." And I was just ashamed. I ran away because I cannot sing and speak in front of Gurujī. So many times Gurujī said, "Now I go to my room in Jardin or in Kato. You go for your mala. You sing the bhajans there." Then Gurujī was gone. Then I was singing, but Gurujī was hearing. After morning, Gurujī said to me, "You were singing very nice." "No, I did not sing, Gurujī." "I know." So sometimes, out of respect for the Guru, one has so much... I can't say anything.
