The mind's flow determines spiritual progress.
A guru sent a disciple to purchase oil with one paisa. The merchant filled the vessel yet oil remained. The merchant doubted the disciple's sanity. Upon return, the guru questioned the small amount. The disciple claimed oil was also inside the pot. The guru explained the disciple had reversed what was given, turning the remainder aside. This illustrates vṛtti, the mind's direction. Entering a meditation hall, vṛtti should rest on the guru's presence and inner practice. Instead, minds often whirl like a river vortex that traps even elephants. Thoughts get caught in judgments, hunger, anger, or distractions. A pure water drop held in the palm can be drunk and lost in bodily impurities. If dropped into the ocean, it merges into vastness. Seekers come to the ashram to merge into the divine ocean. Yet wandering vṛtti causes the drop to be consumed by worldly things. Constant remembrance of the guru is essential. Without it, one strays from the path. Only steady practice allows sitting on the guru's seat without fear.

Actually, Gurudeva is just a form of Lord Śiva, and in another way, Gurudeva is another form of Bhagavān Bṛhaspati Deva and Bhagavān Viṣṇu. So in another way we call:
