Instructions for practicing and teaching yoga

Integrate spiritual practice into daily life. Maintain your practice at home in the early morning or evening. While walking or driving, refrain from excessive talk to focus on your sādhanā. Carry the peaceful atmosphere of the ashram within you. Be harmonious with your family, sharing your practice gently. Engage with the earth by touching soil in a garden to connect with pure energy. Practice āsanas and prāṇāyāma, such as Kapālabhāti, for health, moving beyond mere reliance on medicine. Yoga is a holistic practice for body and life. Proper learning requires attending classes with a teacher, progressing step by step through different levels. The highest gathering is Satsaṅg, where all come together in truth.

"Yoga is not a religion, it is not spirituality, but health, our body’s health."

"Satsaṅg means sat, sat means the truth, saṅg, saṅg means together."

We have only one day more, and you have had very nice programs. Some of you are going to the other group, and the other group has to come. But what you were doing in this seminar—when you go home, I think you should make some practice of this anuṣṭhāna, though not the whole day. Of course, if you still have holidays and time, you can do it at home. Otherwise, practice in the early morning or evening, dividing it into three different times. Also, when you meditate or are walking somewhere—if you are walking with someone, of course, or driving in the car—it is better that you should not be talking. You can think more about your sādhanā. Many times I see from many people: when someone is driving with you in your car, they are looking at others sitting beside them and looking, yes, how this and like that. That is not good. You can speak something, but not, "Yes, and how is this? And yeah, that was very good, no?" This is not good. Many accidents happen like this, where people are talking too much. Mahāprabhujī āśrama—we are coming here twice, maybe otherwise only once. We have opportunities here for this anuṣṭhāna. I was going twice around you in the group of Anuṣṭhāna. Once I came inside and spoke with him a little bit. It was good. All was very good. Others I saw just from a different distance. That room hall is beautiful, and there is a very spiritual atmosphere in all of our big halls. It is also very good in the whole of our āśrama. It is very spiritual and very peaceful. So we should take into our heart, into our brain, into our thoughts and feelings, good things, peaceful things. And when we come home, of course, you have to be very good to your families. You can speak about what you were doing, how you were practicing. Of course, sometimes in families they are different. Some don’t want to practice these things, and someone is doing nothing, and one is going, practicing. So this is a family. It is good if whole families can be like this: very spiritual, relaxed, practicing. Well, friends, they are enjoying; they think they are enjoying different things. Yes, you can go for football, swimming, etc. That’s very good if we can do it. And many are going to the mountains. Be careful. But we did yoga exercises very comfortably, peacefully, though we were sometimes a little bit tired because we were sitting for a long time. Also, our other group of our seminarians here, they were enjoying very much as well. They were working, doing something, work for vegetables, the farm. And a few times I told, over many years, how to get the pure energy, and that is from such a place where there are no chemicals or anything. So we should touch our Earth as Mother Earth. So, with the work a little bit in your farm or in your little garden at home—nearby you have a little garden—but touch the finger so that it is. Of course, many people think, "Oh, my beautiful nails and these colors," and so on. So then don’t take it like this from the earth with fingers, but just lick it like this. Touch only. It is a life gone. It was a lecture, so it is so that I hope that day before yesterday I told you that we should feel and touch this earth, and today also. And tomorrow, before going, also say, "Grandmother, our Earth Mother." Or, we shall always touch our hands and feet to our Earth. That is the same thing which I told you long ago, that everything is good at home also. Now, many, many people have done very good things, and many have asked; they made vegetables in their own house. So they are not flowers or other, but they make very nice, all vegetables so that we can have a nice, fresh, good, our home. And from this greenery inside, there is also a good atmosphere, good energy. So many people, I have seen in India also now, and some other countries I have seen, very, very nice near the windows. They made some steps, a place with wood, and they made step by step some vegetables. In big cities, maybe a little bit is not good air. But here in Europe, it is very good everywhere, very nice. In very big cities, it may be little, but we can clean it. Steel is much better than chemicals. So this is how we shall try to bring our body to be very healthy, very good, and then we have harmony in the house with our families, with our body, and with others. So, those who were practicing in this seminar did very well. And they had many exercises, exercises with the forest and in the garden. So this city, this country, all of this is very healthy in these countries. Yeah, in Slovakia or Czech, I think there is still some coal, very much coal. And in that part of that, where I was, when I came, they were all calling me again certain times a year for yoga. That kind of yoga which we are doing is yoga in their life. So it was for the workers who were working there in the coal mill. When I first came to Czechoslovakia, to those places where there was a lot of mining and coal mines, and where they wanted people to get a little bit of health. So Havířov, Ostrava, and all these other places. We had their program also, and they were coming for one week or some ten days and going far and making prāṇāyāmas and yoga, many, many things. And they were feeling very relaxed, these people, and the prāṇāyāma, what they were learning, it was very, very good. That’s why very, very many people liked it, and thousands of people were learning yoga at that time. And now also, people are doing it. So first is our life, our life, and in this our life is our self, our self. What is that? What we call our soul, and that is our God within ourselves. So we should do prāṇāyāma more every day. Many people have problems in the body. We are getting medicine, but this medicine is many kinds of medicine that we are suppressing in the body. When one day or two days we don’t get tablets, again it comes out. So that means it is suppressed. But if we go through āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, and this prāṇāyāma is very important, and you know that all very well: neti, dhauti, basti, nauli, trataka, these five points. But also, we should know when and how we should do it. There is also Śaṅkha Prakṣālana. Śaṅkha Prakṣālana is four times. All these different seasons, and if not that, then three times. If not, then at least twice. And if not, then at least once a year. And if not this, then go every day or every week into the forest or a big park, and there, walk and do the prāṇāyāma. There are different kinds of prāṇāyāmas, and that’s what we do. What is that? Kapālabhāti. Yes. And where more? And Brahmārī, and this way. So what is that? You said, "Me first time again"? Kapāl. What is a kapāl? What is a kapāl? Yes, this is the whole of our head, the skull. This is the skull, and from here, all that we are taking from our inhale, exhale, this is what we are exhaling. So that’s why we are doing exhalation, more exhalation. After that, do like this: equal breathing. Inhale and exhale. After that, we take in more oxygen. And exhale quickly out. This is one of the best. We were going to the Himalayas. There were more than 300 people with us, and many people had a little breathing problem. And so, I told them; I also was feeling that it should be, yes, oxygen comes good. So yoga is not a religion, it is not spirituality, but health, our body’s health. Now, there are many, many yoga centers everywhere, but only very certain yoga schools are doing all the techniques properly. And now it is like this, in this nearly two years, it will nearly be two years. These are all corona problems, and what happens? Everywhere in our world, they closed everything: temples, churches, yoga centers, and playing. Many things were blocked. Then what happens? The yoga teacher ate in their home, and a few of the students, they should teach with telephone in their house. So there are two things. One is very good: that one, your yoga teacher, was giving exercises, what he was doing in the ashrams, but now doing them at home, at a distance. So, they are doing exercise exactly what their teacher is doing. But some people, they do not do it properly, and that is not good. Because this is only temporary. Never think that you will sit in your house comfortably and give others also comfortably, and that’s all. That is not yoga. We have to practice, like, let’s say, in school, in college, in universities. We have to come to the university, college, or a school. Otherwise, you know, the university will be empty, Hari Om. So, the same thing is that if you or we, what we are doing, our spiritualities, our mantras, everything has to be done together. So it is very important now, according to your centers and your ashrams where you are teaching, that we should come back and the teachers should come back. And all students and teachers, that’s called the classes, the class. So this year, it’s in this class, and there are the teachers. But next year, they go to the high steps. Then there should be another teacher there. But some people, they are taking the students like in a test. We can be happy with them, with them, but in the class you have to go further with other teachers. So, we have to go step by step. Now, the primary school and university professor. So, in primary school, the teacher is also very good, nothing to say. But if you keep your child or student there all the time, then you will only be like a primary. So we see the professor. What is a professor, and what is the teacher? Both are good, good people, but between them is a gap, and this gap is there. Then your student will not be like that. And that’s why I tell you these many things. In India, it’s also not good. For the yoga, the primary, they are together, and others all together. They said, "Anybody come, come on." That’s called isi-bisi, mish-mash. So in India it’s praṇām, but when I came here it was also not good. But in Czechoslovakia, we created very good programs, from primary school to university. So we always had this class and this class. It took time, so in one class there are twenty people. On the fourth class, there were only five people. Now, what do the students say? Okay, you come also in. No. Which is best? Slowly, what comes? The qualities are there. So people are coming, and then they go away, or they come again. So it was, and we also gave the name of the yoga, I know, our yoga. It was in Czechoslovakia, that was Yoga in Daily Life, that yoga, Yoga in Daily Life. So, yoga in daily life. They stay by; this is that. So, yoga, we should all be practicing yoga daily. Daily means every day. Life, life. For our life, every day. This was not a religion. Not politics, not spiritualities, but the whole health, oneness. And in that oneness is altogether religion; all meditations, everything is in one, but my whole, my life, myself. So that time was communist, and they were always doing what and how to do, and they were so happy that they had yoga in their daily life, and so Maheśvara Nanda had yoga in his daily life. Now, many of them have died because they are old people, but many of them are still alive. And who was young like me? Some left already, but still they are here. So, in this way, what I said, the professor cannot go to the primary school to teach. And if the primary school teacher goes to the professor, of course, he will come, "Please, can you bring me coffee?" So, therefore, it is the student-teacher. The teacher must tell, "Please, now, not with my class, you have to go to the other class." That is very important. Or, if you are teaching something, then this class, and then don’t go with this, but go with the other class. So similarly, we also have this very much in our countries: in Hungary, in Croatia, in Slovenia, in Yugoslavia, everywhere, in India, and in Austria also. But in Austria, it is a little bit, I don’t talk about it. So that is good because it is good. But, of course, they all come when I am here for satsaṅg. And then it all can be from the primary or from the university. Satsaṅg means sat, sat means the truth, saṅg, saṅg means together, sat-saṅg, and satkā-saṅkaru, what means sat-saṅg? It means being with good people. That’s called Satsaṅga. Sat is good, truth, everything good. Sat, truth. Sat, Saṅgha. Saṅgha means together. We are sitting, now we are sitting all together, this is a Saṅgha. The Sangha means the good. So Sat Sangha, and there anybody can be. And even can sing bhajans, good things. And in your countries here, you have different languages, but you also have very nice bhajans, songs, very good. So this is different, but schooling is different. A little child, three days old, and a grandfather of eighty or ninety years. It’s good, they love each other. But this little child cannot walk. The old one can, maybe. But we will take him in our hands, child. But the difference is very much. Satsaṅg, satsaṅg. So, why do we come to the saṅgha? It means we all come together, and that is the highest supreme university for us, Satsaṅg.
