Food is God

A satsang discourse on the sacred nature of food and eating.

"In India, we very much eat with our hands. This way, you can truly taste."

"Food is God. We say: food is God. We are taking the food; we are not just eating it."

The lecturer addresses the community, elevating the act of eating into a spiritual practice. He advocates for mindful eating with the hands, thorough chewing, and silent reverence for food as divine nourishment. He shares a story about Mahaprabhuji convincing a meat-eater to change his diet through logic and recounts a devotee's miraculous rescue, illustrating the power of the Guru. The talk concludes with Sanskrit prayers to Annapurna, the goddess of food.

Good evening once more. How are you? Are you relaxed and happy? Have you eaten well? Was it tasty? That is why you are happy. Yes, everything is good. For example, when we eat, it is not merely to fill the stomach. The nourishment should reach every part of our body, and the experience should please our eyes as well. We should feel, "Oh, today the food was very good." In India, we very much eat with our hands. This way, you can truly taste. When we eat with a spoon, we take and taste, we know if the food is good. But for others, it is not a spoon; it is five fingers. Perhaps tomorrow you can try this experience. Of course, before eating, we must wash our hands—twice. First, we wash our hands, then we take the food to eat. And when we finish eating, we wash our hands again, and also our lips, and those with a mustache, always. Thank you. It is very tasteful. If you want to eat, use your fingers. When we touch something with our hands, it is like a mother giving her child milk from her breast. Both sides are happy. The mother is very happy, she is giving something very good, and so is the child. More energy flows from the mother's side and the child's side. Similarly, you have your fingers, your foot, and then it comes to our mouth. Our fingers touch our lips. So there are our fingers, our food, and our lips. The tongue is waiting for others too, but that tongue does not feel good. It's okay; someone is giving something else. If it is liquid, we can take it in our bowl, and there we mostly drink. For other things, of course, we use a spoon. There are different kinds of liquids inside, and we call it food. Food is God. We say: food is God. We are taking the food; we are not just eating it. We are receiving it, and it goes into our whole body. Do not eat quickly. Many of you know, also in your countries, long ago here in Europe too, they had very good vegetable food, and it is said we should chew it at least twenty-five times. Then you will know the true taste of the food. Otherwise, we just get it into the stomach. Well, why not? It goes into the stomach, and the stomach will do its work. But when we see the food coming, in the stomach there are many 'people' inside, all ready to receive it. They are all liquid. Where should we go? Solids go one side, chilies go another. All the taste we have is going. When someone brings food from somewhere, our stomach is already preparing everything. We come here from the coffee terrace, and these people from this coffee territory, they are preparing. They are preparing, and they are more. So food is not only what we see, but it also smells. The taste is already in your stomach. Coffee is there still, or ice cream, or good food, or milk—many things. So the stomach is already making all the space ready. When it is coming, then you know... in these countries, Europeans, you were all about selling. Before food comes to our table, it is coming, we say something. Yes or not? But now many people don't. They just come and talk in hygiene, "How are you?" "Anna" means food, "devatā" means god. "Anna" is the seeds. The seeds that we have, whatever we are making—bread, which kind of fries you have, chapatis—and there is something, what is it called? Here is something like that... torte, torte. What is it called? Yes, and then one more... and pizza. From far away, the smell comes, and how nice and good it is. Of course, people who are meat eaters, then they smell that. And when it comes to meat, near it, well, I feel like I am vomiting. So this is a different taste for everybody. So it is said, someone told once, one said to Holy Gurujī. He was in Rajasthan, India, and there is Udaipur, a very nice city, and there are also very big rivers and halls, and they have very good food there also. So, Holy Gurujīs, they had many disciples, and these were—they are still—some kings' families, and they were Holy Gurujīs' disciples. So, one of them, he was always eating meat. So, Holy Gurujī said, "Now, don't eat meat." So he said, "Come to Mahāprabhujī, and Mahāprabhujī will give you knowledge." He said, "Well, I don't think that your Gurujī, Mahāprabhujī, is he like that?" Holy Guru said, "Come with me tomorrow, day after tomorrow, and you will see Mahāprabhujī." This is the truth. In the book of Līlā Amṛt, read again that story that I am telling you. So it was monsoon time—and now is the monsoon time—just two days before the beginning, already the monsoon. That man was sitting with one, two... what we call a bull, two bulls. Because there was no road for cars or anything, so he had this. He was sitting on his coach, and two bulls were carrying him. And what happens? Rain comes very quickly from a distance, and the water came very strong. It's like a little river. And now he was just going in, and strong water came. So he said, "If Mahāprabhujī is really God, then save me, please, because I'm sinking down, and my bulls are also." And what happens? It came up, and it came out. He said, "My God, Mahāprabhujī, I told," and he just came up and went. So the next day he said to Mahāprabhujī, our Gurujī, Sadgurujī, this king said, "I want to go to Mahāprabhujī and see." "Yes, please come." And when he came there—at that time there were no telephones, no messages to come—and he came with the Holy Gurujī. Then Mahāprabhujī was sitting there in the verandah, and Holy Gurujī and his royal families came before to praṇām, and Mahāprabhujī said, "Oh, yesterday you were in the river falling, but I was sitting there beside you, and you said about this." And you know, I was pulling out your... is it from? No, I don't need so. Mahāprabhujī said it was that time, and there it was. Then he fell down. I know what is a guru, who is the Mahāprabhujī. Read it in the books. And these families, they are still devotees of Mahāprabhujī. And now, whenever I go to Udaipur—it is called this city—and whenever I go, they are so happy that I am there. And everyone said, "No, eat for me," or "Eat this," or "Eat that," yeah? Not eat, eat. So, Mahāprabhujī gave the blessings. And he said, "Don't eat any more meat or alcohol, and you will be happy and all." And they are still very happy, very happy. So, some people listened to what happened, the miracle towards Mahāprabhujī. So from another place someone came, and there came the whole family. And they came to Mahāprabhujī, but their family, their husband, he didn't want anything. "I don't want any sādhus or swāmīs or anything." But his wife, his mother, and his children, they all were there. He didn't want to come to Mahāprabhujī. But all these families said, "No, no, we want to go." So, you see that women have more power to make the men go wherever they want, yes. And why the women? They always do good things. Yes. Well, they were sitting and this. And this man, he's walking here, sitting there, or standing. There's a tent there. Mahāprabhujī said, "You come and sit down here. Can I bring you a chair?" He said, "No, no, I'm okay." Again, Gurujī said, "Mahāprabhujī, come and sit." He said, "You see, I don't believe sādhus. My wife and my family came, that's why I'm coming." So, Mahāprabhujī said, "Then come and sit." Holy Gurujī said, "You eat meat?" "Yes." "You eat meat, you are human. Why not? Everybody is eating." "I see." "If you eat the meat, then eat only meat. You are eating ice cream, coffee, chai, this, that, chapatis, and meat." He said, "Of course, then you are not a human." "Why? Because you should not eat. God has given good food." He said, "Yes, but even all animals are eating." So Mahāprabhujī said, "Then it's like a dog, what?" He says, "Yes, dogs, dog eats meat, dog eats bread, eat this, eat this." What means "meat eat"? Mahāprabhujī said, "I know who eats the meat." He said, "I, no, no, that say." He said, "If you are a tiger or lion, then they eat only meat. They don't eat ice cream." He said, "Yes, that's true. So are you eating chapatis?" "Yes." "Then you are a dog." Then he said, "What is this going on? Oh, what kind of food is this? Is it a tick? What? Then what goes there?" So, like these humans, it should be human food. Meat is for animals. So like this, many things were happening. And before, he said to that, "How do you know that I went through the river? How do you?" Mahāprabhujī... next time I will tell you more, so like this. Great saints are sent, and I can say now, even all we are here, that we are worshiping Mahāprabhujī's holy gurujīs, and Devpurījī is great. Mahāprabhujī and Devapurījī have many, many things, and he was in many places, same person, same face, same. Everything, every word that he is speaking. And at the same time, born in different places, and when he went, he also went at that time. So, these miracle things are great, people. We are not. So, if we should eat well, then eat peacefully and well. Dogs, and tigers, and all others, they don't chew. They just take it in the mouth. And you? You cannot chew adequately. We are chewing food. So many, what we are looking at, but many, maybe more people are having now the meat eaters, but devas, gods, they don't eat. That you should know. So food, food is God. Ānāpūrṇī, ānāpūrṇī, sadāpūrṇī, saṅkarā, pāna-bhādābhī. You know this? You are making? Here, when I came many times, that time many people first made some prayers and then ate. In the name of Jesus or something, and now hardly people sit down and, sitting there, then say something. So that's very important: how to pray for... So food is the mother's. The mother is giving food. The Parā and Pūrṇam, they can sing. Every time they are sitting before eating, first they are praying. And the Pūrṇāy, Śraddhā Pūrṇāy, Śaṅkara Prāṇa Balabhe, Vairāgya Siddhārthī Vikṣaṃ Dehi Chhapar Chhāparvatī Devī Siddha Devo Maheśvara Arbhagavadeva Bhaktasya Satīśo Pūanṭhāyaṃ Kāṃ Karoti Kalyāṇam Ārogyaṃ Dhana Sampadā. Yes, and then we eat. This is what God has given, yeah. So this is very important. You should, you should do how it is. So food, Annapūrṇā, jídlo Annapūrṇe, Annapūrṇe. Pūrṇa means full, complete. And there is a very high temple in the Himalayas, it is nearby Nepal and a very big mountain, and there is the mother, Holy Mother Annapurna, and therefore that mountain is Annapurna. Mother Annapūrṇā, that mother, she is giving to everyone, all she is giving. And it is said, one day even God Śiva, he came to Annapūrṇā, and Śiva was asking for food from Annapūrṇā. There are great things there are. We forgot many things. Also, you had so many great things from spirituality, God, or whatever, spirituality, but many people forgot it. When we eat, we should not talk too much, and we should tell the children not to speak. Because the Andevtā Bhagavān, when your president comes here, we are all silent. He speaks. Maybe he says hello. That's all. And he is talking, and we are sitting. So, Bhagavān, the food which God has given, and Pūrṇam Mother, and we silently we should eat. But now is coming: eating is great things, and talking, and drinking, and that and this. This is other things. Many people have this company, and that company, and this company. And they want to take money from this and from this. And they are very rich persons, and some are not very rich, so they come for the dining, eating, and yes, come, we are in a hotel, and we will eat and talk. Let us first eat, and eating and coming, alcohol and drinking and eating. Everything is like this. Then they are already molded with alcohol. "Hey, my friend, how are you? My friend, I am here. Yeah, please, now. It is very late. We are here. You know, we have to make signatures. My friend, I make it, and next they say, 'My God, I signed already.'" Many things are there. Anyhow, so food is God. Yeah, it is something very, very important. I think we should know this. It's not a joke. Yes, many people keep making, eating this and that, and then they put the poison. It happens also, so we should know what is the food. And if we are pure, and somebody gives the poison, may God protect you. Yes, what do you think? Yes or no? So our yoga, or anything, medicine, and many things, but the real medicine is our nourishment. If you eat too much, then your body will not be good. Not good, but we are all eating and eating, and then it's not good in the body. Now, try to sit. That's why yoga exercises, sarvahitāsana, and eat good, but not too much, and chew nicely, good. The juice of the food mostly comes from the mouth, our teeth, and so on. The taste is coming from there. Hormones are coming from there. And if I've told you about something, then in the mouth is already liquid, isn't it? Or it's something like lemons, and the lemons have so much good inside. And we put inside lemon, and then a little something bitter. It comes a little to the mouth. And juice is coming out more from our body than from the lemon. So eat, don't talk too much. Eat some things, and yes, you can have more, and then after you can talk. But that is also when many things happen: we are talking and we are eating, and yes, then the poison inside, or if not poison, but some animals inside. And in the evening, there may not be so much light. So, our food is God's mother. This is our life, and this is very important. And all different kinds in the body, everything that is needed, it goes from our mouth. Otherwise, injection. That's it.
