The Nature and Power of Prayer

Prayer is a universal practice that begins simply and extends into profound dimensions. It can be as brief as a call for help. A foundational mantra is a prayer for all: "Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ" – let all be happy. "Sarve santu nirāmayāḥ" – let all be healthy. Prayer works subtly, transforming life gradually rather than granting immediate, material wishes. It is crucial to pray not only in difficulty but also in gratitude. Prayer is distinct from hope; it is real. It seeks guidance to stay on a right path, which is essentially that which is not wrong. We pray for health, peace, and the well-being of all, recognizing that societal health supports individual wellness.

"Prayer is subtle. You will not notice. But day by day your life will transform."

"Prayer is actually real."

A simple daily practice begins upon waking. Acknowledge, "I am human." Then, upon standing, honor the Earth: "Mother, can I step on your back?" Finally, recognize the sanctity of water, which carries life and divine presence. These conscious acts connect us to our humanity and the elements.

Food and physical practice support this life. A diet centered on fresh vegetables, seeds, and simple foods can transform health. The physical practice includes mindful movement and specific techniques like Aśvinī Mudrā, which engages the nervous system. Conscious breathing practices channel energy from the navel through the body's centers.

"The prayer truly works."

"Let all behold the divinity... let there not be even a small part of unhappiness in anybody’s life."

Part 1: The Nature and Power of Prayer Dear Svāmījī, let us say praṇām. Praṇām, Viśvagurujī, Paramahaṃsa Maheśvarānandajī, and praṇām, dear Jñāneśvara Purījī. Hari Om to all yoga friends and guests who have come today, and Hari Om to all who are sitting before the webcast and listening to us. This webcast comes from the beautiful city of Salzburg in Austria. It is a very special occasion. With a garland, we would very gladly welcome you. Please, we are so happy when you say that. Thank you. Welcome, Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Ganeśa Purījī, we also want to welcome you with a garland. Ganeśa Purījī is not often seen in Europe, so perhaps not all of you know him. He is not so visible to us here because most of the time he resides in the āśrama in Jaipur, India. He studies a great deal of Sanskrit and knows much about mantras. Viśvagurujī asked if you would give us some time to speak about prayer. Please, Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara. Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara is from Kriśṇa, as you all know. He has been there for many, many years, and now he is Indian; he has an Indian passport and a large āśrama, and he speaks about Sanskrit at universities. He came just for one week. After two or three days or so, he will return to India. His father passed away, so he came from India to here—from Croatia to Austria. We needed a visa again, so he obtained the visa here. Now he has come to see all of us. I said we want to see this city, and our Premānandjī’s sister is here. You know Premānandjī; he has been many, many years in Europe and India. So, Mahārājjī. Peace, peace, peace. They are always laughing, always happy whenever I can meet them at seminars. They are very, very happy. I am also very happy to be here with you today. Of course, I spent many years with Premānandjī in the Jaipur Āśrama. Then, when Svāmījī, Viśvagurujī, and Premānandjī decided that I could stay alone, Premānandjī moved to Jādaṇ. Now he takes care of the Jādaṇ Āśrama, which is quite large. So, the topic for today is prayer. Prayer can begin very simply and can extend into very complex dimensions and lengths. It can be, as we begin, "Oh God, help me." Even shorter: "Help me." Just "Help." "Please help me!" And then we can continue. This mantra which I have chanted is also a prayer, but it is a prayer for all. That is what I like about India, this universality. "Vasudhaiva Kuṭumbakam" is a saying in India that declares the whole world is one family. This mantra is from the Upaniṣads and is part of the Vedas, the oldest scriptures in the world. I’m sorry, I don’t speak German very well. I can understand it, but my speaking is not good. I hope you understand me. So: "Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ" – let all be happy. "Sarve santu nirāmayāḥ" – let all be healthy. This is the mantra we need in these times of Corona. For Corona is a kind of disease that is also mentioned in the Purāṇas. It also came up earlier in these various versions. And especially, it is Caṇḍādevī who came specifically to remove the illness. Today we have a disease that attacks only humans. Animals not so much, or almost none, and it has kept us in lockdown for the past two years. So: "Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ, sarve santu nirāmayāḥ" – let all be healthy. "Sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu" – let all behold the divinity, the fertility; let all be fruitful. "Mā kaścid duḥkha bhāgbhavet" – let there not be even a small part of unhappiness in anybody’s life. It’s very difficult for us. We pray for peace, but if we have a noisy neighbor, it becomes very difficult. If there is a problem in the neighborhood, it is also difficult. If it’s a problem in the city, it is difficult. It is very easy to pray for peace on the other side of the world. In Austria, it is very easy to pray for peace in India or Afghanistan. But it is very difficult to pray for peace close to us. So from this little prayer, this "help" that I just mentioned, it goes that far. There are so many Christian prayers that you know. Then there are so many prayers that we recite. And then, of course, there are great prayers with 700 mantras in one, which are very famous, or simply renewing the name of God, the thousand names of God, and so on. Prayer is universal because we always come to one point when we need somebody, we need some help. We pray to the other person, we pray to society, we pray to God, we pray to someone. And it works. The deeper you pray, the more it works. But it doesn’t work in the way we hope, you know, that suddenly the light will come, Jesus or anyone will appear and then say, "Yes, my child, everything is fine." Suddenly you have one million dollars or euros in your bank account and everything is beautiful. The Mercedes in front of your house, you have a beautiful house. No, unfortunately, I’m so sorry. It doesn’t work that way. The prayer is subtle. You will not notice. But day by day your life will transform. And then one month, two months, one year later you will realize, "Oh my God, I actually have a good life. I actually feel good." That is why I always request you all: do not pray only when you are unhappy. Also pray and tell people that you are happy. "Oh God, I really feel good today, thank you for that. I hope that this will continue, and I want to share this." In our prayer, "Om Jaya Gurudeva Nirañjana," even at the very beginning we proclaim the glory of the Guru, the formless, the spotless. I like, for example, the morning prayer that we recite, Śiva Āratī. In the Śiva Āratī, the entire prayer describes Śiva, simply presenting and explaining what He is like, how God appears, and so forth. In one sentence we say, "Oh please give us the true knowledge, give us the truth so that we can realize you." The topic of prayer is vast, and the main point for you all is simply to remember that it works. The prayer truly works. We have encountered so many, I have spoken with so many people who had so many problems, and they did the prayer, and basically it works. But still, it works both in a short and a long time, even if it is not so visible. So don’t give up, don’t give up on a prayer; it is slightly different from hope. Because it is said that hope is like the staff from the cradle to the grave. No, prayer is not like hope. Prayer is actually real. There are so many beautiful Christian prayers that you know, which people recite. There are so many beautiful Muslim prayers, and there are so many prayers that we know. Many mantras that we chant are prayers. Even the very famous Gāyatrī Mantra: "Dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt." This last part I like very much. "Dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt." Oh God, give us the proper intellect, give us the common sense. This is what we are missing today, the common sense. With this common sense, then we can do anything. It is said that God never works against us directly. Our bad karmas never manifest directly. They manifest indirectly. In India it is said: first the mind, first our intellect goes in the wrong direction. We start to choose wrong company. We decide to say, "Yes, okay, drinking is not so good, but today it’s a special occasion. Let me just drink one small glass, or one glass, or two glasses," and then very quickly we will return to the habits. So first our mind goes in the wrong direction, then we begin to see different people, and they give us wrong advice again and again because we can no longer distinguish. Therefore we pray: "Please God, keep me on the right path, keep me there." This is what our prayers are for. Please protect us, please keep us on the right path. What is the right path? It is for us to choose. There is not a single right path, but there are many wrong paths. And there is no explanation for wrong paths. So the good part is essentially that which is not bad. So we all pray for health, we all pray for peace in the world, we all pray for our own and everyone’s well-being. As we desire our own well-being, we also desire the well-being of our family, and the well-being of all. Because if there is no problem around you, then your entire society will be well. And here we speak about societal health—physical health and mental health. We cultivate these through yoga, but these prayers are specifically for our society and for our social well-being. For the conclusion, I would just like to repeat this theme from the beginning: May all be free from illness, may all see auspiciousness, may no one suffer any pain. Om Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. Śrī Śrī Alakhpurījī, Mahādeva, kī jaya! Devādideva, Deveśvara, Mahādeva, kī jaya! Ārādya Bhagavān, Śrī Dīpa Nārāyaṇa, Mahāprabhujī, kī jaya! Hindu Dharma Samrāṭ Mādhavānandajī Bhagavān, kī jaya! Victory to Viśvaguru Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Parama Saṃ Mahāprabhujī Gurudev! Thank you. Brahmā, Śrī Dhyāna, Mūlaṃ Guru Mūrtiḥ, Ujā Mūlaṃ Guru Padam, Mantra Mūlaṃ Guru Vākyaṃ. Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. Good evening, beautiful day. The whole day I was thinking a lot, from Vienna all the way here. I was standing somewhere, then somewhere else. And now I am here. You are all my sisters, brothers, all children. And I have somewhat retreated with the German language because until now I have been in other countries and have not been able to speak everywhere. Speak in German, then few people understand. Our "Yoga in Daily Life," like Svāmījī’s television, is for entire countries: Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, etc. What I am speaking now, they are also hearing. Then they say, "Okay, we cannot understand." But of course, I would like to bring back my language, the German language. So, I will speak a little in English as well as in German. I am so happy. I have often thought, will I come, will I come. But then Corona. Satyuga, Śiva from the very beginning. Śiva, Śiva, that is where the Śivas began and arrived. There were no people here. It was just snow and so on. Satyuga, Dvāpara Yuga, the word of God Rāma. Then came the Tretā Yuga, Kṛṣṇa. And now the Kali Yuga is coming. I believe you all know what Kali Yuga is. And if you do not know, this is precisely the Kali Yuga. Kālī is completely dark. What do we see all over the world, how people die one after another or negative things in the world. Kali Yuga has just arrived, arrived strongly, Corona. And Corona once, twice, a third time, and now a fourth time is coming again. Why? This happens only with humans and not with animals or birds and so on. Why only humans? And how this illness returns. For example, we have a perfume, just a little, somewhere here on our face. And then someone comes and sits here, we do not know whose it is. All the perfume is here. And so the people have created something. One knows nothing, but people have often thought so, and it has come everywhere. It comes, it comes, because nothing belongs to the animals nor to nature, only to humans. And Kali Yuga, how people have lived and live. Many, many animals are beaten, beaten like this, it is so. Alcohol, alcohol is good. From the Satyugas, in the Satyugas he said, Śiva, what is needed from the ocean. And there was alcohol, but as something healthy, just a little. But now, we know how many people lie down in Austria, for example. Or let us say in this city where we are. How many people are struggling with alcohol and have problems, serious problems, with a woman or with a man or both, and so on. Alcohol is not meant for people to drink, and there are also various other kinds of drugs. And how many have started this from a young age. And people, like animals, and in my opinion, as many have said, also say that all life, animals, birds, all, all life has gone to God when we believe in God. And they said, what people do to us. God has said, they themselves will now become the people when problems arise. All animals, all else is nothing. And so, it is for the people, for the people who have, to receive everything. Everything that they have been, made to nature, animals, waters, etc., humans, humans are still there. When we practice Yoga in Daily Life, we know how many years I have been here in Australia, in Austria. And there I arrived in Vienna or here, and people asked, "Who are you, where do you come from, or what, are you a Buddhist or what?" I have said, "Yes, I am Buddhist, I am Hindu, I am everything." But what is Yoga? There was very little in Yoga, not much at all. And here in this place, I have come for a long, long time. And we have brought yoga and many people practice yoga, but eat meat and so on. And they are also healthy, nothing. They are no longer healthy. But here sit several of my sisters, my brothers. Many have been many years, I do not know, 30 years or more. But we have practiced always very positively. Nothing negative. Well lived. And so well lived that Corona did not attack. I was in India. And in India, I said, I cannot say. Because in India, too, people have come to consume a lot of meat and alcohol, just as has happened in Europe. And Europe has now become more positive, with more vegetables and everything, or less alcohol and meat. There is much that is not, but very, very much. And as it came from my thoughts as well, as I said, because of that. And because of the program, I did it from Canada. And in Canada, I bought a lecture and I thought that we should do it like this. And so they made the name Vegan. And we know how that is. Part 2: A Simple Practice for Daily Life A person was sitting here with me recently. He said, two or three weeks ago, he observed that when a cow has a calf, if it is male, they beat it. Then they take only the milk from the cow, nothing else. And so many people here, I believe in this city as well, are on these paths. Many people come here, and all over the world. In the beginning, I said a lot here: be positive, eat only good vegetables, no meat, no alcohol. Many have come, and many have returned. But most of the time, it is like this. I said in India, and so many people have died there, here as well, and everywhere else. But I said, "Yoga in Daily Life"—I have people all over the world where our Yoga Centers are: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, Afghanistan, many, many places. I asked all of them if people came to them with their Corona illness and how many of them died. Nowhere. But older people who were in the hospital, where there are many Corona patients, they may have died. Or doctors—doctors have not died either; they have practiced yoga. Everywhere in the world, and thus "Yoga in Daily Life." I have thought deeply. I have constantly said, how is it here? I have said, as far as Yoga in Daily Life is concerned, everything is here in your city. That is one thing, very good. Secondly, tomorrow we will have the program again, and it is a very, very beautiful yoga practice now. Speaking is very significant. Swāmījī has done it very well just now. Pūjā, too. Pūjā is very important. What is Pūjā? Prārthanā. Like the Prārthanā? And I would like to say that very briefly. Everyone, please, you should practice now. We will then hear and see whether I am one or what, how that is. Early in the morning, we rise from the bed and open our eyes. And just say one word. And see how it will be by evening time. And that is just one word: "I am human." What? That’s all. "I am a human being. I am human." And when we see that I am a human being, and when we are human, we see what we can do and what we cannot. Look at this: "I am a human. I am not animals. I am not killing the animals. I am the man, the human being, the human." Number two: we sit up on our bed and then go to the bathroom or somewhere. We come to stand up. Then one more word: "Mother, can I step on your back?" Two mothers: one is our own mother, but the Earth—Mother Earth. "I step on you, oh holy Mother Earth." So this means, what we do with the Earth, how and what we do, and what we have done now—so much, it releases so many chemicals into it. And why do we take so much? Do we have enough to eat? At least we would have thought positive and good, and with the vegetables or so. Mother, my mother. Number three: what we see, no matter how far, we come to the water. In the morning, when a draught or a finger or a hand of water, we take it very early in the morning. All the energy, the nervous system, throughout the entire body comes through water. Shall we do it tomorrow, yes? How wonderful it is when we come, as we sleep and so on, and water comes, we are immediately fully present, as if we have just awakened. Buddha, we say, the water is life. Buddha, see what, and "Jal jahā jagadīśa." Jal is the water, and "jagadīśa." Where there is water, there is God. And God Himself is God. So these four, three points that I have given. First and foremost: I am human. Dhan, Sitz, End, Saun, Mutha, Oda, Erdeng. Tridhe Mudha, Khanik, standing up with my feet, up, Antudia. Kod Vyate, Bodha, water. When these four points are present, the awakening comes into the body, and these are the lives, the people, our body, the five points, the missing elements of the body. Do it, show it, how it becomes good. We will continue with that tomorrow. And now I would like to give you some practice. Exactly. The prayers were said by Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara. I have also said them. And then we will perhaps practice. Exercises. Practicing yoga. I want to show you two. All people, our sisters, brothers, and we have many, we have many ill, many, many ill bodies. Have you not seen me as I am now today? About a year and a half ago, I was here, or maybe two years. Be strong, be very slow, and that is everything. And now, everything away. But how? Food, that is food and practice. First is food. Maybe that is tomorrow, or I can also say today: salad. Salad, salad, various kinds of vegetables, potatoes, and one more thing, that should not be put in salad. You can prepare vegetables in various ways, and use different kinds of vegetables, along with oils like olive oil, sesame oil, just a little, one or two drops. Then different types of seeds. I have the seeds, I will say and share them tomorrow. For example, water, water, water bowl, water bowl, water, watermelon. So there are many, many seeds of the fruits. They are very, very... very good. And the boys take the poison and spread it all over London, everywhere. So these take two great paths, and one must grasp all of this, entering into it. Is there yogurt, for example? Was the wool and black paper. The paper is very, very good. It clears everything out of the stomach very well, very easily in the morning. This is just water, water, right? So, eat your fill, and then you can eat; we are having chapati, but you may have one bread, one or two breads, that’s all. And very fine little, if you want butter. If you observe, in two months, you will see that your life is different. I have someone, our sister, she is in Czechoslovakia, and I have her there, and in three weeks, I believe it was three weeks, she has become so well. She says, "Swāmījī, Son," she was like this, she could not walk and so on. And this is just salad, very good salad. Tomorrow we will bring, or maybe tomorrow we will do, as it is. Please, this is our life, to be lived. Otherwise, the body, that, that, my God. I also had very... I always had my feet, how do you say, swollen, very, very much. It was the same on airplanes. But now, not at all. The doctor said, I have nothing at all, no, any disease now. Except for my sugar. I will try to do something about the sugar. This is very, very, very good, this vegetable salad. Tomorrow I will demonstrate properly again. Number two: Practice yoga in daily life. Yoga. And that means, what is the program? Yoga? Yoga in daily life. Yoga in daily life.... When we are a little healthy and can get up and so on, it is different. Who cannot do that? Then, we have an exercise. You will see. Merdika, please sit for one minute wherever you are sitting, with your feet and head aligned, straight. Or there is a chair, sitting on the chair. Who cannot sit properly? Hands straight, thumbs inside, strong, hands underneath. What you have determined, you have heard and felt. But I will say how, where, and what is happening now. So, our nerves extend here, reaching all the way to our feet, shoulders, and up to this point. And come to the belly. It is here. But the entire nervous system, everywhere, that connects here to the scars. So, once more. One, then, one, slowly. And everyone here knows, all know about our daily yoga life. So, continue, other side, slowly. Not like that, as we have done. It is like this in the vegetables. So, very good. One, and then, if it should be five to fourteen or twenty, and then, adiom, sit down. You can sit in a chair, you can stand, you can sit both upright and like this. But how do you feel? Do you feel anything? And then, we know that everyone lives from my yoga receptivity for many years, we know. Then like this, fingers here, slowly, also 10 times or 15 times, and then you begin like this. We have done it, everyone has it, but now we do it consciously, go ahead, we do it consciously, slowly, stay here like this, and then like this. I practice here every day for two and a half hours. Then, we know, this is also ours. And sometimes you sit in the chair or something, it’s more comfortable that way. Or, as it is. Then we have everything, we know. Yes, and then we do that, but very slowly. For two years, I have made our Sarabhi cups, and many people have become healthy. Other side. Tomorrow there will also be very intense stretching. Other side. Other side. One may do it ten times or fifteen times or five times, but many have not done it for such a long time. You will see tomorrow, ah, Swāmījī, you mean, okay, there is much. Very good, maybe tomorrow we will come again. And then I need you, Andres, a truly very strong, good practice. Then, you will see, yes, that is it. Okay, we need to sit like we do in our yoga seat. A new yoga session. That means the Aśvinī Mudrā is very, very, very good for everyone. And it is very good for women. So, Aśvinī means horse. All yoga exercises, 90 are from animals, birds, or from animals. So, horse. Have you seen a horse or not? Have you seen a horse just once, or have you seen a little more there? When a horse, we say horse and we have lists, the Aśvinī, Aśvinī is horse. When a horse, he gives thumbs, how do you say that, the earths can. So, when you exhale, then you will see how many times the horse, horse, anus. And so something always opens up. Did you see, somebody? Yes. And for those who have not seen, I will show you now. Okay? So. But not to hold. Only slowly like this. Once, twice, thrice. Garland of horses. But the entire nervous system and the whole body, and what the horses do, is very healthy. And so we have this, the horses, what we call the Aśvinī Mudrā. Aśvina is the horse. Then practice on summer mornings. Like this, for example, like this. It flows, draws you inward. Sit. We will do it ten times and then relax. Again, five times. So about ten minutes, four minutes. This will be very. So, please try it like this. Hello. Sit up straight or sit on the chair. Okay. So. And we will do sauna. Just looked at the horse. But we will have our chin down here. So. Aśvinī Mudrā. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Once again. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. And so we do it five times. Ten, ten. We will do it five times like this. So please, go ahead. Do you have time or not? How long are we allowed to live? Okay, good. So please. Twice five times. Our life will become youthful, healthy, peaceful, harmonious, and good. But of course, children cannot know and cannot do such things. Maybe practice something different or so. Thank you. This is the Aśvinī Mudrā. Aśvinī Mudrā. Would you like to have them? In the morning. Regarding something else, he must sit properly; otherwise, he can sit on the chair. And there is the navel. Our life, when we are born, like a car engine, was initially just a small part, and that was in the navel. Everything that has happened from the navel and whatever will happen also arises from the navel. And here we are. And here, we chant Oṃ. We have chanted Oṃ, Oṃ three times. But when we come to the proper practices, Kuṇḍalinī and all that, then there will be seven to eight stages. This is proper breathing. Then from the navel. It covers all the chakras from our book, up to the Sahasrāra Cakra. And from the Sahasrāra Cakra, it returns again through both nostrils. And return safely, come back to the dedication. This is the Kuṇḍalinī, Yogis, what we can do. So, once more. From the navel, deep inhalation. And in this, the one for fat, Aśvinī Mudrā. Here, it is truly, yes, a form of discipline. So, navel, navel, okay? Go on. Three times yourself. Three times. Many of you already know this, some perhaps do not, and this is one of the best of the best. And the index fingers, and it goes into the ears. So, human beings, men, you know, men, they are very, very close. Not ladies, they are very good. So, we need to go into our ears and bring our knees to the shoulders, exactly right, not in front, not like this, exactly like this, the chest, open your chest. So, I will tell you only once, inhale, I am doing it, you can double it, put that hand, then I can’t see you, I can’t. See, you can see, but I cannot see you. So, I will tell you only once: inhale. I am doing it; you can double it. Put that hand—then I can’t see you. I can’t see you. You can see, but I cannot see you. So, I will tell you only once. Inhale, I am doing it, you can double it, place that hand, then I cannot see you, I cannot see you, you can see but I cannot see you, so I will tell you only once: inhale, I am doing it, you can double it, place that hand, then I cannot see you, I cannot see. You, you can see but I cannot see you, so, I... And it comes from the Darśanī Mudrā, then Nābhi, and then the Sahasrāra Cakras, and the vibration where we will go, so there are ten different ones. Today I will give the first one, perhaps the second tomorrow, and then we will see, but you will be very happy, you are healthy, many, many things, and only five times, only five times. Then after one month, you can go three more. It goes like this. You should use your teeth, and then with your teeth, and then... with your teeth. Then, the ability, then let it open. Not the lips, but the teeth, like this, it will work, this is what we call Brahmṛi Prāṇāyāma. Brahmṛi is a wasp, it is a wasp that keeps going, yes, so now please five times, come on.
