Animals are like our brothers and sisters

A spiritual address on yoga, health, and ethical living.

"By practicing yoga, we will move toward health."

"Come to the vegan way. With veganism, that is the only way now."

A spiritual teacher speaks at an ashram inauguration, linking modern health crises like cancer to the consumption of meat and dairy. He advocates for veganism and yoga as essential paths to physical health and compassion, citing the growth of veganism among youth and sharing personal travel anecdotes. He emphasizes protecting animals and future generations, despite feeling unwell himself.

Dear sisters, brothers, all beautiful ashrams, Mahāprabhujīs, everyone has worked for this ashram. This ashram is truly very good. Umbapurī and our Annapūrṇā have done a great deal of work; I think she has established two or three āśrams. Usama Jīvan did it, and you did it. That is the proof. Here we have made an ashram, and it is for all people. Now is the time. We speak of Satyuga, Tretāyuga, Dvāparayuga, and Kaliyuga. Kali Yuga signifies that a difficult period is approaching. For people, a very terrible thing will come because they do not think of the many animals. In the past, some may have eaten meat occasionally, but now everyone desires only meat. Meat, alcohol, and other such things—people take them, believing it is very good for them. We see in Austria that many people take a lot of drugs. There are vast quantities of drugs, and they cannot progress. Parents lack the strength to prevent their children from such things. Meat, alcohol, and these three drugs render people inert, like animals, perhaps. Yet now, many young people are renouncing meat, alcohol, and drugs. In Austria, in Vienna and elsewhere, they wish to eat nothing from animals: no meat, no milk, nothing—they are vegan. These young people in Vienna; I have heard of the many places with vegan restaurants. In other countries too, like America, this is increasing now, especially after the corona period. For animals are like our brothers; they give us milk and do many things for us. But consider how they are tortured now. Through practicing yoga many times, in many centers, many yogīs came to this understanding. People, the vegans—our Agni Amarpuṇa brought this ashram, and in this city, it will be of great benefit that they can come to this yoga. And yoga means not only this but to feel yourself. Let us say, for example, you have your dog here. Would you try to kill your dog now and eat it? Or you have a cat—would you kill and eat them? Here in this country, people take care of the dog, the cat, and other pets. They think, "Yes, my cat, my dog," but no one thinks: from where does it come? How is meat produced? Now, you see in your country too, in the Austrian area, you do not see cows anywhere. I travel from one country to another, and while there are very nice farms and information, there are no cows, no animals. Perhaps some are rare, and they are killed daily; once a year they kill these animals. Where are the cows? How are they bringing these cows, and what are they doing to them? Because we do not know, children do not know. They do not know where the cow and the flesh come from, and they do not realize something is very wrong now in all countries, in the whole world. So, by practicing yoga, we will move toward health. I came from nearly 50 years ago. At that time, there were not so many diseases like cancer. Cancer existed, but not to this extent. Now, how many people in this city have cancer? Young people. Why is this? It is all because of the meat and the animals they consume. They do not provide fresh, good, grace-filled food, but it introduces many problems. What are they giving? And that enters the milk, and through the milk, it comes to us. This comes from the animals. If you think that your children should be healthy, then do not give them such things. After the third generation, they will become free from cancers. Yoga is practiced throughout the world, and many others are doing it, but not like this. They said alcohol and... we do not talk about that, but like this, good yogīs give real yoga exercises and teach how to think, how to prepare food, and how to be myself for my health. Young people may think, "We are okay," but when these diseases come, then you know—grandmother, mother, father, all the cancers, the sisters—you know how hard, how much suffering we endure. We have lots of things to use, many fruits and all. Whatever we have is very good. So my thinking is always to save our people, our children, from cancers, because this comes from chemicals inside, and that is very bad. Now it is within us. In Europe, it is acceptable; they can milk the cow and give it. But in other countries, in Australia and elsewhere, they do not give the cow, your cow or anyone's. They will not take the milk. They take the milk, and what they are doing we do not know, and then they give the milk. If someone brings fresh milk, they do not allow it. They said, "No, we want to have the milk for washing our bathroom." So you can bathe cows, but not drink. So people came to believe we would take milk for washing and cleaning, and so on. After one year in Australia, people came to know they were taking this milk for washing, but it was actually fresh milk they were using. So now what they do is this: they put something in that milk so that if you drink it, you will have tyrosine. No, it cannot be eaten. In this way, please do everything for our people, for our children. Give to all. Come to the vegan way. With veganism, that is the only way now. There is no more. We may want to have milk and such, but consider milk—how they have given it and how they are doing it. Bees, honeybees, and these many things. So, young people have worked very, very nicely. I was on an airplane about ten days ago, coming from Australia, from Croatia to Vienna. There was a young girl sitting there, perhaps 25 years old. My disciple was sitting with her; I was on the other side. They brought her something from Darubaland, in case she wanted to eat. This girl was from France. She said, "I am vegan. I am vegan, and I cannot eat anything." They said, "No, no, these are all vegan things." She said, "That is okay." She checked carefully and confirmed it was vegan. She said again, very nicely, that all were vegan. On the airplane, all were vegan. So I told this girl, "You are great." I asked about her parents, and she said, "I was born this way. Before that, my parents were also vegan. I cannot do anything otherwise." In that way, so many people. Then someone with me asked, "Do you practice yoga?" She said, "No, I don't practice yoga, but I am vegan, I do everything." So in this area, you know, it is very good. But where are the cows here now? Slowly, slowly, they are disappearing everywhere. So please help our animals. Be healthy, be good, practice yoga and meditation. This ashram you have made is a prayer to God, so that all people who come here to our center will be healthy, happy, and have a long life. This ashram is beautiful. I have seen it now. Through this tree here, in this city, I have passed by many times. But now I came, and it was very beautiful—many cities, many things. I had not come here for about ten years, or ten, yes, ten years or something. Eight years. Eight years. No, but I was not there now, that means ten, ten. Yes, yes, so this is very nice, and thank you very much. I was coming from Czech, Czechoslovakian. Early in the morning, I had a program, some work. I was doing some work, then held yoga practice and gave lectures, and after that, I left. I stayed somewhere in the city at two places. Then I was driving from Czech to Vienna, Austria—sorry, Austria—and it took about two to three hours. I have my friends, my disciples here; they are all old now, very old, but they were so devoted. One of them, I was with them for two hours. They kept me, all the people, and it was very nice. I was in the church, and there was... I had yoga practice at that time, but it was a very long time ago, yes. So I was there, and then I had this vaccination infection for two days. I was very... I could not speak anything, and I could not get up to go to the bathroom. There were two or three people with me, taking care. So I was very tired, and still I cannot speak properly. But I came here because today they have this ashram. I was there also, so with them I was drawing power, very strong, to speak with them. So I had to; now I am very tired, I will go. One day I will come when we are healthy and everything, then I will give you more lectures, okay? But now, I was thinking, so this is the way. So thank you very much. This is your āśram. Is your house your city? Please use it, or lose it. Also, to come and practice āsanas is very nice, not only hard like this, very, very, really. Like a person who is about 80 years old, and that should practice yoga. It is like sitting on the chair, and we... Practice like this, Sarabhītāsana, and then like this we all will become healthy, and we will be again younger. So this is yoga. In their life, it is for you.
