Clear your mind

An evening satsang on inner transformation, guru devotion, and clearing past resentments.

"As Gandhijī said, to make a change in the world, first we have to change ourselves."

"You should never doubt a guru or his decisions. If the guru says you should do something, we should do it."

A speaker at Jalan Ashram addresses the global and local gathering, emphasizing that personal change must precede any desire to change the world. He stresses the necessity of trusting the guru's guidance, illustrating this with a parable about a disciple testing his guru with a bird. The speaker also shares experiences from a recent pilgrimage with Gurudev to Varanasi and concludes with an extended allegory about a married couple whose 50-year resentment is resolved by finally communicating a simple misunderstanding over breakfast.

Akhaṇḍamaṇḍalākaraṃ, Vyāptaṃ Yena Carācaraṃ, Tatpadaṃ Darśitaṃ Yena, Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ. Good evening, dear brothers and sisters all across the world, and to those who are sitting here with us in Jalan Ashram in the presence of our beloved Gurudev, Viśvagurujī. First of all, I would like to offer praṇām to our Guru Paramparā: Śailāgapurījī, Devapurījī, Mahāprabhujī, Holy Gurujī, and Gurudev. As Gandhijī said, to make a change in the world, first we have to change ourselves. So if we want to see a change or make any different types of changes in the world, first we have to look within ourselves. We have to see within us how we are: how much anger, how much hatred, how much love, how much devotion. How many good qualities, how many bad qualities do we have within us? First, we have to look within and change those things. How to change those things is by sitting and listening to a guru, meditating, praying to God, and asking for forgiveness. The guru is the person who forgives everyone, who brings us from one shore to another shore, and who makes us one with God, with the Supreme Self. So if we want to change others—before we always say, "This person did this to us," or we are always blaming others—first we have to change ourselves. It is hard, I know, because we all like to blame and criticize other things first; we don't look at how bad we are within ourselves. If we change ourselves, if we are pure, then we can discuss or criticize other people. But before blaming others for their actions, first we have to fix the bad things within us. And you should never doubt a guru or his decisions. If the guru says you should do something, we should do it. There is one story which I remember, which Gurudev narrated a few years back. There was a guru and a few disciples. The disciples were always trying to get ahead, or were trying to think that they are better or they are smarter, and that Gurujī is old and he doesn't think so. They thought, "We are better than him." So the story was, they thought, "Okay, let's test our Guru. Does he really know what he says, or does he really know what he tells the preachers?" What they did was they caught a bird. I'm not sure if it's exactly whatever I remember, but I will say how I remember it. They caught a bird in their hands, and they put the bird behind them, and they went to Gurujī. They wanted to test him if he really knows what he says. So they asked Gurujī, "Where is the bird?" Then Gurujī says, "It's with you." Then they said, "Okay, but which hand, left or right?" "Right." Then they said, "Okay, this is very simple." So he thought in his head, "I will press it. If Gurujī says it's alive, then I will press it and kill it. Then he will be wrong." Or if he says it's dead, then I will show him, 'Look, it's alive.'" In any way, he wanted to make his Guru wrong, the disciple. So then he asked Gurujī, "Is it dead or alive?" Gurujī says, "This is in your hands." So the karma, what we do, is in our hands. It depends on us. How we do it? If the disciple wanted, he could press it and kill it, or he could let it free. So you should always trust your guru and go with his decisions. And no matter how harsh or hard it is to believe, you should always listen to it and do it, because he always has the good will for us, and he always knows what is good for us and what is not. Maybe we would like to doubt the decisions or think, "Why did he say this? It's not logical at all." Some things are not logical, but we should not look for the logic. We should just follow and go ahead and do what he says if we want the betterment of ourselves. As Miśra Gurujī says, "Guru kṛpā he kevalaṃ śiṣya kalyāṇamaṅgalam." So when the Guru's kṛpā is on us, we should not worry about anything. The guru is the person who shows us, who leads us, who forgives us, who has all the knowledge to give us. As our beloved Gurudev has been traveling for the past 52 years all across the world and spreading the message of Sanātana Hindu Dharma, about yoga and Indian philosophy, and spreading his message all across the world, this is a very great thing. We are very blessed to be in his presence at this time. We should feel very lucky that he is now with us here in Jhadan, and we have the opportunity and the time to spend with him. I am also very lucky that I had the blessing of him now to go with him to Varanasi and meet many sādhus and go with him everywhere. We were at the Gaṅgā Āratī, as you have seen maybe on Facebook or on webcast, so I would like to share a little bit about that trip. First, we started our journey. Gurudev sent me and Svāmī Rājendapurījī a few days before the trip to go and organize a little bit and see how things are going there. So we went first to Varanasi, and we were going with Pārthakjī all around to see Svāmijī's accommodation. We went immediately the night when we arrived. Viśvanāthjī called us, and I arrived, and I didn't even go to the ashram where I was staying. We just changed cars, and we went immediately to have darśan of Kāśī Viśvanāthjī in the night before the śayana āratī, which is at 10:30 in the night. So we were blessed to have the darśan, and then from there we went to the āśram. Then we had some work in Prayāgrāj the next day, so we went to Prayāgrāj and did the work. We also met Ravindra Purījī in the akhāḍā a little bit and discussed the programs which were coming up. And after that, we went to have darśan of the Trivenī Saṅgam. And when Viśvagurujī arrived after two days with everyone, then we had a tight schedule. We went first to Kalbhera Mandir and Viśvanāthjī, and after two days, we had a continuous program at Śṛṅgeri Maṭh organized by Śaṅkara Bhāratījī, who was the disciple of the Śaṅkarācārya of Śṛṅgeri. As you know, Ādiguru Śaṅkarācārya made four different maṭhas all across India: north, south, west, and east. So we have Bhāratī Tīrthajī in South Śṛṅgeri Maṭh, we have Niścalānandajī Mahārāj in Purī, we have Svārūpānandajī in Dvārakā, and we have in Kāñcīpura we have Avimukteśvarānandajī (or I forgot the name). They are the main four in India. There are many self-made Śaṅkarācāryas, but mainly they are four by Ādiguru Śaṅkarācāryajī's pīṭha. So this one was organized in Varanasi by the Śṛṅgeri Maṭha, which is in the south. So he had a beautiful program, and at last, the program was, after all the speeches of all the saints, the program was ended by Sundaryā Lahari, which was a beautiful part with 10,000 children of local schools there. Sundaryā Lahari is a divine offering to God by Śaṅkarācāryajī. He created Sundaryā Lahari to praise or to pray to Lord Śiva, and it was chanted for half an hour by all the students, where we all took part. And after that, Viśvagurujī then arrived back here, and now he is with us. And we are all blessed to be with him, and we pray to Mahāprabhujī to bless us all and bless us to spend more time with Viśvagurujī and to forgive us all for our old sins, and keep us all happy and healthy in these times. And what is that? When the sun goes, the day is still for us for all night, and the sun will come. What will you say about this? My day is for the night, and my day is for the sunrise. After five days, you should give me an answer, or maybe ten days. Ten days is very good, day and night. Day and... Who said that? Then, say, so, say... And night and day, night and day, night and day. Okay, I gave you already what you should have done, yes? So, for us, it's the next point, which I will tell you next time. Every day is a new day. The past is gone. And when the past is gone, then don't cry for that. So in India, among all yogīs and others, we know that I have learned, but it is behind. In other countries, many times, people were talking, and in the past, there was so much crying, or good, or what is good. And in India, we are Sanātana dharma's gurus, etc. We know that has happened, but it is gone. And we know we cannot do more than anything. It's gone. But at this point, from the past, even one minute, and what is that? Very short one? When one point is only very quick or anything, what do you think about that? What do you think? Tell something. In my hand, it is one, something like one pot, and from the hand, it falls down, broken, broken. Now, in this situation, how will you think? Or we have milk, milk, and suddenly, what happens? It falls down. How will you say? We will see different things. But still, that past is gone. All we can do in the present is think now, and hold that properly. Gone is gone, broken is broken, but still we have it in our brain. The husband throws this at his wife, and then after, "I'm sorry, my darling, I'm sorry." And she will say, "Okay, but it is in the brain." One day it will come back. Will you? That's very difficult. There were, in the school, young children in the school. And there are boys and girls. They are coming to their school. They go back in the morning. We come back in one year, two years, three years, et cetera, et cetera. And in that class where they are going, one side is sitting one boy, and beside there is one girl. Very nice. They are very happy; they are very good. Both of them help them with this, and he helps them with this, etc. It's very nice. There's nothing, anything. And it was going slowly, and then slowly, and like this. They were about the age of 20 at the time, and then they became like friends, and they thought they would marry. Then they were coming to their house, and they were about 25 years already, and every morning she made breakfast. The boy came on this side, and that boy, or the man, he took the bread, and hard, hard, he cut it, and best fine this side. So hard, hard, he took, and very soft, nice bread and butter. Every day, that lady, that girl, or the lady, whatever, you can come. Again, that boy comes, and he cuts for him the bread, and he took the heart, this one, and finds with the bread, and so on. See, he doesn't think anything, but she thinks that, "I will one day have, I will have the one day in early, otherwise this man will go away, he will do certain man I got, and then what happened?" They marry, that is care, very nice. Parents were good, both from girls and boys, from their parents they came. They have marriage and married, and after few days, that lady who is married now, she doesn't want to be happy with that man. They come to the kitchen for breakfast, then she's looking this side, he's looking good, but she's going this side, was cooking everywhere, everything. He was helping her, making the breads and everything, but she was to the 50 years, 50 years till that she was looking only like this, and he was, he don't know what, what she say. They don't touch each other, but in the marriage 50 years, and this is what we call that, what? Is the day, what is that golden day? Well, the husband said to his wife, "Darling, we go to somewhere in a very good, beautiful park, and there's a very nice hotel and fruits and everything, very good, so we will go there." She said, "Okay," and then. And that man said from the kitchen, "Please, today is my golden day, my wife and me. Please make a very nice breakfast on the table, please." And they are eating like this. He said, "Darling, what do you... why are you unhappy all the time?" He said, "I'm not unhappy, but you don't give me anything." I said, "What? He made the bread." What do you think? She said, "Because your whole life you are eating the good, hard bread." Nice. And others, not. You are eating always. He said, "What, darling?" I said, "Yes." Oh, look. This is for you, and this is for me. Now I will have this bread. And he said, "You know, my darling, my whole life I was bringing you this bread, and it was very nice, and this. And I got only heart, heart." Then he said, "Please, like." Then she was happy, and he was happy. Then what happened? He said, "Today we are marrying." Now we are passing again, so just this bread, let it, let it, let it, let it, let it, let it... Let it, let it,... let it... Let it, let it, let it, ... let... it, let it, let it, let it, let it... Let it, let it, let ... it, let... It let it let... it let... it. But he said, "No, no, yes, okay, look, this and that taken." And he thinks, "My God, whole heart, mind, all the ways, always, I don't want to eat fast, the fast, that's it." So in that case, they said, "Today is our golden day, and it is our marriage," and we all went happily and came to be happy. So one thing, and the people, many people of that age, of that time, when marriage is the marriage, they don't want to go away. Husband and wife will be all the time. They will not go away and marry the other one. No, I was married, and I married this. But then they said, "Why did you not tell me this?" He said, "I don't tell you. You are a man, you know what you will do." Similarly, like this, let's be that day in one week or something. Find out something that you have in your mind, and that from our mind we have to clear out. Otherwise, lifelong suffering, and then gone. Clear up, clear up, that is. And that is all that is for our life: how to make our life, and how it is. So, like this, both braids, this and that in hand, put it like this, and everything becomes clear. So, whenever you have problems in your life, we have to go to that person and say, "I'm sorry." But I'm sorry for what? Mostly that in Christians, when there is a Christian day, then they, what is it, Christmas. And on that day, at Christmas, they come with their friends, or husband, wife, or something, and problems. They come there, and please forgive me. Though it is that, but don't remain always, always in the heart. And happiness will always be good. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpa Nārāyaṇam. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpa Nārāyaṇam. Ayanam Haṃsabhadah Prabhu Śaraṇapara. Ayanam Haṃsabhadah Prabhu Śaraṇapara. Om Namaḥ Śrī Pradīpa Nārāyaṇam. ... Śrī Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Devadhī Deva, Deva Puruṣa Mahādeva Mādhavānandajī Bhagavān Alak Purījī Mahādeva Satya Sanātandā, Mātāpitā Gurudevakī, Oṃ Śānti, Śānti, Śānti.
